I substitute teach in my town's two high schools. Substitute teachers are not allowed to give detentions to students. For major problems, I can call the office and get an administrator to come to the room. Otherwise, I leave a note for the regular classroom teacher and I explain any problem behaviors. It is up to them to handle the inappropriate behavior when they return. But, detentions -- nope!

I know sometimes Just the threat of a detention works and when I do assign a detention it may only be for 5 minutes. A not left for the teacher is sometimes helpful but for many students they need the immediate consequence.
@soklinly1 Great question. This is where it gets a little tricky. If you are familiar with the school you can see if they have a detention program and if so what you need to do to assign detention. If they don’t this is where it gets more tricky. At this point I would probably let it go since it would not be worth my time or effort. Luckily just my presence and the threat of detention works.
Writing their names on the board is a good idea…IF you know their names. If you are a traveling sub, you often have NO idea who these kids are, even after taking attendance. That’s the tough part. 😖😖
I agree with you 100 percent. Being a traveling sub has to be one of the hardest jobs. That is why I create a seating chart from the very beginning. Some kids still may pull a fast one on me but by and large it gets the job done.
We, the people, including substitute teachers, cannot just hand out a detention without due process, and also there is a hierarchy of levels which the student must offend before a detention is processed. We must 1st provide overt expectations, due process warning for any broken classroom rules, except for property or personal violence. Thus, before the detention may be issued the warning must be understood. Following the warning is the following hierarchy of the regular teacher's recommendations. Some work with a teacher in the next classroom and will provide an outlet for acting out students. If this fails, then the substitute teacher must actually write out a detention stating why the student is being sent to the detention officer, or administrator in charge of naughty students. Long-term substitute teacher's may have the privilege of calling the acting out students parent but this is usually not done by a daily classroom substitute teacher. The rule in California that prohibits a sub from subbing in any 1 class for more than 30 days keeps most subs from ever gaining this much power to call students homes and communicate to guardians info, sometimes confidential info regarding the minors offenses. Keeping all this in mind, my most recent research really makes sense. Get the students on task Immediately as they enter the classroom. Attendance will follow and most teacher's have great seating charts. Once the assignments are passed out, the substitute teachers job becomes a little easier. Thank God for classroom Chromebooks too. Most students will enter the class, sit down, be ready for the sub to explain the assignment, or refer them to check out their teacher's lesson plan on Google Classroom. Once they are all busy the sub may begin taking attendance. By the time attendance is done and students have heard the lesson plans or opened their Chromebooks up, there will be about 20 minutes left for classroom work time. Come prepared with an additional word puzzle to reward the students done early who may want something else to work on until the last 5 minutes of class. Sincerely, A district sub of 25+ yrs ....... I also work in California and I know exactly what you are talking about when you mention giving warnings, Buddy teachers, and documentation. I really like your process of having the students work as soon as they walk in the door and then using the rest of the time for attendance and monitoring. Those are great recommendations. Any student would be lucky to have you as a guest teacher.

Detention don't work in the hood. But you are partly correct. Lemme show you how it go: 1. Please stay seated 2. Keep hands & feet to yourself 3. Keep voices at a low/med volume All that other stuff you're talking about is NOT gonna work!
90% of time, teachers do not leave a seating chart. I do better with kids in 3rd grade to high school. Problem is when I accept a job, the system doesn't tell me what grade I am supposed to teach.
I think that is such a disservice to guest teachers. The least the teacher can do is have a seating chart and make sure the lesson they have is simple so you can spend your energy on the classroom behavior.
That's not a good system of support and fair treatment for substitute teachers. Usually if you work for the district, you will be informed of the name of the school, grade level, teacher's name, and duration of the assignment. That way the sub is able to download a few extra word puzzles, or reward work for students to do when finished with the regular teacher's recommended lesson plans. Perhaps if you wrote a letter to the HR dept in charge of wherever you are employed as a sub, then they may be able to improve their sub teacher assignment system.

How would you find them to come back for detention if the period after is not the break time?

How do you know their names in the attention getting part? The first three that you were on the board? Do they tell you?
