Lochay Power Station Hydro Generator Refurbishment

In 2012, one of the generators started to exhibit some noise and vibration issues and SSE, the owners of the installation, called in the specialists from Sulzer’s Falkirk Service Center to dismantle the generator in question and investigate the cause. Sulzer engineers supported and completed this project from 2012 up until the end of 2015.

Love those polished EE Co spec and worksplates. A time when we actually made fine heavy electric machines. Worked with EE equipped electric and DEMU trains on the old Southern Region of BR. Most motors were EE 507/ 16F now I think of it. Some had insulation updated to "20J" for use under 455 EMUs. EE 546s power the 442s and remaining ED locos. Many motors like this were scrapped when the Midland/Great Eastern dumped their 310s and 312s, sadly. You did a good job with those loose fittings, Mr Sulzer.

Hydro Tasmania has many English Electric generators, turbines, valves & governors. Even to today many are still in service from the 30's. Excellent design, durable and serviceable. Waddamana, the original power station has now been replaced but 100 years of operation is quite possible with this quality. The tejp being used on the coils, is that teflon/PTFE or what is it?

It is a pity they couldn’t have brought some craftsmen and technicians in from Rugby who had built the things originally?

I don't remember it being more capacity after overhaul it was still noisy and vibrated even more than it did before not to mention all the bolts and material that had to be replaced post sulzer overhaul by local maintenance team so you make it sound like a good job but really it wasn't.
