    My all-time Disney favorite growing up in the 60's - The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh! My sister and I memorized the song and sang it while we played. It is the perfect combination of action/adventure, atmospheric shivers and good triumphing over evil. Patrick McGoohan was the perfect Dr. Syn. R.I.P. Thank you, Walt!

    I can't even begin to describe my excitement to the three part series when, as a fifth grader in 1970, my elementary school did a Friday afternoon after school movie and over three such Friday's presented the three parts in sequence. I was instantly glued to the experience and the Vicar of Dimchurch became my very first literary-film hero! Even today fifty years later I get a ripple up my spine when I hear the opening music play.

    In 1976, I went out on Halloween as the Scarecrow. One of the best costumes I ever had, especially the mask. My Dad and I made a paper mache mask of my face and painted it, then Dad shellacked it, super glued it to a white hood my Mom made, along with the rest of the costume. The interview with Patrick McGoohan took place only a year or so before his untimely death. Many people are not aware that, although he SOUNDS English, he was, in fact, a native-born American actor, who spent much of his life abroad, returning to the land of his birth only a few years before he passed away. Sean Scully, who played John Banks in the Disney Scarecrow series, as well as in the Disney films "Almost Angels" and "The Prince and the Pauper," is an Australian actor. Now in his early 70's, he retired from performing in 2010.

      Mr. McGoohan, born in Astoria section of Queens, NYC, but was raised in Ireland and England (his parents were Irish and moved back to their homeland when he was still a baby). He actually lived in the US for the last 30-something years of his life. There was considerable uproar in England due to the controversial ending of his show, The Prisoner. After he and his family were actually being harassed because of it, he moved them to Switzerland for a while, then to America in the early 70s (first to Santa Fe I think, then to the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, where he settled and remained until his death in 2009).

    At night riding Gehenna, the respectable Reverend Dr. Christopher Syn became "the Scarecrow", the feared head of the smugglers. Together with Mr. Mipps, a former Royal Navy carpenter, he organized the smugglers into a well-organized band of "Night Riders", also called "The Devil Riders" with macabre disguises and code-names.
    Syn's cunning was so great that the smugglers outwitted the government forces for many years. A hidden stable watched over by Mother Handaway, the local "witch" (who believed the Scarecrow to be the Devil in living form), was the hiding place for the horses of the Scarecrow and his lieutenants, Mipps and the local highwayman Jimmie Bone (who, being as a good horseman as Syn and of similar build, was sometimes called to impersonate the Scarecrow when Syn either had to be somewhere or seen in the same place.)

    One of the nice things about Doctor Syn aka The Scarecrow, is that the character is still around, echoing like a ghost in popular entertainment. Alan Moore made The Scarecrow one of the members of an early League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and despite the mess that is the film made from the first book, you can see Doctor Syn in one of the paintings of earlier Leagues up on the wall of the League's underground lair. There is much yet to be done with the Scarecrow, if someone can summon up the cojones to do it.

If only Disney could have convinced McGoohan to sit for a commentary of at least one of the episodes or even the movie. At least he seemed more willing to talk about Scarecrow than he ever did about The Prisoner. Truly a shame.

I’ve never experienced Dr. Syn before and I loved it as a Disney treasure. I would love to see a remake of the tale and I choose Hugo Weaving to play the main protagonist hero.

    I wish that the European movie production companies can make a modern version of the Scarecrow it would do very good I grew up watching this show many moons ago he was like Europe's first superhero way before James Bond only this time in modern day times they give him a robotic horse that can run 150 mph that will be awesome

    • @LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts
      @LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts Год назад

      Yes. If it was to be remade it would have to be a small, independent, European company. The modern Disney/ Hollywood would destroy it. Can you imagine what a dog's dinner would be left by the time everyone had pulled it apart to insert their own agendas? The fake bosoms and teeth everywhere for the ubiquitous love scenes? Urghhhh... shudder!

    Dr. Syn is one of my favorites. Taking the tax money from the King and giving it back to the farmers. A movie that was a remake in 1982 is "The Scarlet Pimpernel" where an English Lord tries to save as many French Royalists from the Reign of Terror, and spirit the Dauphin out of France. Roughly the same time period in history, not a Disney movie, but still worth watching!

    • @JWRogersPS
      @JWRogersPS Год назад

      The Scarlet Pimpernel Isn't a "remake". It was originally a novel that predates Dr Syn by ten years. There have been at least half a dozen movies based on the book. It's considered a classic, and is far more famous that Dr Syn.

      The Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour version is the absolute best of The Scarlett Pimpernel. It may not be Disney, but it is also inspiring. I saw that as an adult.

    Loved the Disney flick, first saw it when it was new! The 1937 film version was downright dull. Disney mistook this story as being based on a real person, but to the best of my knowledge, it was completely fiction. And Patrick McGoohan, of course, was fantastic in everything he did.

    Like Robin Hood, yes a good simile, but it is also like Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. What if the law is wrong? The king or queen of course is the head not only of the state but of the church. So it is interesting that scarecrow is a clergy of the the church of England. Of course I am a American who ancestors fought in the American Revolution so I have no fondness of the crown. Even less so now that Chuck is the king and horse face the queen. Now Dianna I liked and I like Harry and William, so maybe I will come around when he is on the throne.

      Not in the current environment at Disney. It would be a major disappointment and a barely tolerable copy of the original. Dr Syn would probably be female, Mips African and John Banks homosexual, even though some of the changes would not be appropriate for the time period.
