  • Busy week at the shop!
    Stone's polishing Fetterman's secondary panels.
Spook's fixing stuff nobody will EVER see on the Zwitter... plus, getting in some yoga and answering one of our most frequently asked questions.
Rodney drops Ramsey's transmission to prep for a straight axle transmission going in soon.
Mr. Schutte's Karmann Ghia is looking good and making progress.
Shannon gets Mr. Tayor's 1958 Euro Beetle road-ready again (turn signals are the easy way to make friends and influence people).
Heads UP: We're booking in April 2020 now, so if you're mulling over the idea of a resto in 2020, now would be a good time to start that conversation - info@airkooledkustoms.com - send pics!

What Happens When You Cross an Engineer with an Artist?
Easy - you get Spook. A vintage steel restoration guru with a passion for paint, Spook dreamed of Airkooled Kustoms long before opening the shop in Hazel Green in 2004.
The mastermind behind the proprietary processes that yield darkside dubs that Volkswagen and Porsche enthusiasts drool over, Spook doesn’t do anything halfway.
Ask him about buying a classic air-cooled vehicle made by Airkooled Kustoms, and you’ll probably be surprised to hear him advise against it.
See, the process is long, it’s expensive, and it requires a level of commitment few would-be buyers possess.
The process is not cheap. It is not for the faint of heart. If you CAN settle for anything other than driving an Airkooled Kustoms Classic Volkswagen or Porsche, you should. If settling is simply impossible, you should contact us and get your dream car onto the always-full production schedule.

The video's you shoot of whats happening in the shop is appreciated by us VW nuts. Please keep them coming. Back in the day every small town in Ohio had a VW shop. Each had a boneyard,. Slowly these shops came to an end. I'm glad to see a shop like AKK going strong so the history of these vehicles is not forgotten.

how much to restore a VW bug ? Well it's more that you think. That's my experience . But I have to say, I enjoyed the whole thing. Even the temper tantrums ( yes they did happen) Anything you put your heart into has it's ups and downs. But I so much better for the experience. Learned from my mistakes, ( yeah there were some of them too) worth the price of admission. What a reward ,driving a car that I had resurrected . And having someone compliment me on how nice my car is. have got a few tips from you guys ( so thank-you) Keep up the good work

Have a Karmann Ghia vert that is very rust free, and a squareback that is also very original and clean. Planning to bring to your shop and come up with a plan that best fits these cars. Possibly sell one and keep the other. About an hour drive away, and have a trailer for both.

i have a 74 1303 S Beetle right-hand drive and i thought i could get away with $5k to $6k to get it mechanically sound cuz the car is in decent condition but $60k+?! that's depressing

With you on that! And we've now had to bump up to $100/hour in this labor market. Knowing these cars ran in the couple of thousands not that long ago, the sticker shock is real. Of course, DIY saves labor expenses - but parts are way up, too.

    • @AirkooledKustoms

It's definitely not for everyone! But some of our clients say they debated buying something brand new, then decided they wanted a totally custom car... and not just any custom car, but one that held great memories for them. For them, it's not a decision based on immediate ROI (it would be a bad short-term investment for sure!) but more a matter of getting exactly what they want.

THis is the best reality check for the people that buy rusted hulks for thousands of dollars and think they will save them with out of pocket chump change san's no machine shop/no experienced mechanic knowledge/no special tools/etcetera...by the 2000's a lot of old time v.w. dude's were dieing off and supply of cars long gone to scrap yards, Iv had v.w.'s all my life and dumped the hobby in the late 90's because as you said 50-80 G's for something that sits in your garage 90% of the time being eye candy is not a growth industry and for money spent is a poor investment, My take is the people making electric v.w. retro-fits are the future winners of this hobby.

    • @AirkooledKustoms

Absolutely - someone could resurrect a basket case and get it on the road for a tiny fraction of that. But if you want a brand new, very old car, hand-built and totally customized... that's a restoration and a whole different story.

It's all about the person' some guy's and gal's are just to dainty to get a piece of dirt under there hands and will think it's the end of earth itself if they get a drop of oil on there Hands' but as the video clearly shows you these guys will get down and dirty' as well as jiggy with it' Truth be told car's like the Karmann Ghia for example' there truly hand built so that means someone took the Time to study metal work and read books and used there ✋ Hands to build it' which means if they can do it you can to without all that high dollar stuff' just Time effort and a little elbow grease will go a long way' there's also good reading books on the subject too' a welder a blow torch some good hammer and Dolly's sanders and some Bondo can all be purchased from places like Harbour freight or your local hardware store for cheap it' also helps to go to the local VW club hangouts and ask questions where you might just get a guru that has year's of experience that will offer you his or her expertise just to keep the hobby alive' This stuff is not rocket science and when you study the concept of the car you'll realize it's nothing but a go kart with a shell on top of it' so your imagination can go from original to wild. • @AirkooledKustoms
      @AirkooledKustoms  4 года назад

Great question, Jason. The answer's not so simple... it all depends on the starting condition of the bus (especially the rust - rusty means there's a whole lot of metal work, and that gets expensive). It also depends on what you want done, of course. Here's Spook's answer: ruclips.net/video/Szxz9T1ycDU/видео.html
