ALIENS - Why I Prefer the Theatrical Cut

I've always wanted to talk about the Director's Cut of Aliens (1986, Fox) and how it changes the movie in a couple significant ways. I'm not the first one to do it, but I tried to put my own spin on it. Enjoy!

As some other people in the comments section have said, I'd love to see your thoughts on the different cuts of Terminator 2. (Theatrical, Directors, Extreme Edition)
Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention that the opening scene is 5 minutes longer in the special edition
Make the cuts IN THIS ORDER, or the times won't match up (the video I started with is 2:34:37 in length).
You can do this easily in your favorite video editor (I use VirtualDub: www.virtualdub.org/).
0:08:48 - 0:10:52 - Unconvincing TV wall, Ripley's missing daughter
0:13:10 - 0:18:50 - Hadley's Hope, Newt's family, and then disaster
0:18:59 - 0:19:48 - Long panning shots of Sulaco interior (first part remains to prevent cutting music fade)
0:34:52 - 0:35:37 - "Knock it off, Hudson!" (this one needs to be cut tight, to the audio)
1:26:00 - 1:26:18 - Predicting the alien queen and cheapening the reveal
1:57:46 - 1:58:05 - Awkward "see you, Hicks" scene breaks flow
New length: 2:24:31. It's kind of a testament to how well-produced the theatrical was that just 10 minutes of superfluous dialogue could make such a difference. I never understood why I didn't enjoy the special edition as much as the original, but it makes sense now.
I too prefer the TC version of Aliens, but I prefer the DC version of Alien.
I’m so glad you’re covering this, the first 2 are my favorite movies ever
Aliens will always be my #1! I couldn’t tell you the next 10, it’s always changing or I forget an old fav but I will always love Aliens.
I've been touting this view on the director's cut for years, and it's nice to see I'm not alone when, in my experience, people tend to view it as the definitive version. Love your shit, Mayo. Keep it up.
That tends to happen when the director says it's the real version.
You're definitely not alone.
Theatrical is the best and that comes from a fan of the series for over 25 years!
Sometimes, I don't care what version of a film the director prefers. They shouldn't be seen as the sole authority on their own film.
I think you should cover Alien: Isolation. It's a game that I really really love for what it gets right, but definitely has some major flaws that can be deal-breakers for a lot of people.
This and AvP2, which is a top tier fps
masterpiece in visual way. but for a game, I am not likely to play it again. Alien AI was hard scripted, I mean fixed, no room of freedom to play, and they put too many fight with android all over the place. it was rather Android:isolation than Alien.
Oof, he hated it
Comments that didn't age well lol
@@liltakifuego3993 Retromax's aged very well though.
"Alien is one of the best movies ever made" aaaaaaand subscribed
But he said Aliens lol 😂
Personally I prefer theatrical, but I like the director's cut as a "You love ALIENS here's even more of what you love"

@@randomnerd3402 I created some mayo myself.

@@RealCraft Look the setup was already made, I just saw an opportunity and took it.
Mayo has become one of my favourite youtubers atm. He has such a high quality of videos that are about my interests.
It was interesting to see the extra scenes in the director's cut, but for me the original theatrical version will always be the "true" version. It's certainly the one I prefer today, and I'm glad the first version I watched didn't have the early scenes of the colony.
I'm not a big fan of the sentry gun scene. It's a cool action sequence, but for me it took away some of the threat of the aliens by showing them throw themselves in front of machine guns to be gunned down by the dozen. I can see your point about making the aliens look too intelligent, but for me the director's cut made them a bit too dumb at that point, only to suddenly have them cutting the power and acting smart afterwards. Plus it gets me nitpicking about how there can be so many cannon fodder aliens when they all presumably had to burst from the 100 or so unfortunate colonists.
I can totally see where you're coming from! That's interesting, I hadn't thought about it. That throwing themselves at the guns make them seem too dumb. Maybe. But maybe you could say that they're plausibly working under a hive mind mentality, and don't value their own preservation in that sense. Interesting topic.
I like to believe that because the aliens didn't know what the turrets do, so I don't blame them on charging. So, after a bunch being gunned down, the aliens learnt that they should avoid them. The aliens may be smart predators but they shouldn't know about everything. So, like every other living creature, they had to learn and adapt. Thats why they seem dumb at first, then smart. Adepting to the enviroment and the hazards in it.
a few months ago i rewatched it after a long time and it was the director's cut (no indication of it anywhere). i wasn't sure about some of the scenes like the daughter scene at the start which felt natural enough that i said "ok it was in i just don't remember it because it wasn't that important". but when i saw the colonists scene i was sure that this was not part of the movie i watched the first time.
@@bloppa9784 It was the sheer number of aliens getting blasted to bits that always bugged me. The way the aliens keep on throwing themselves at the turrets until there are only a few bullets left in the last gun. I think part of the problem is that it just didn't fit my image of the cunning alien killing machine that wiped out nearly an entire crew on its own in the first movie.
I think it does work as a tense scene, with Ripley and the marines watching the ammo counter drop and one gun after another stop shooting. Then there's the bit of relief it creates when they think they're safe, only for the aliens to get smart and try another tactic.
@@davekendall5273 You could also say that it shows that they aren't perfect killers. While a single Alien slaughtered the crew in the first film, that crew was mostly scientists and this crew is made up of marines. They came prepared to counter threats and this scene gives you that hope they can win. A sense of "okay they can be killed, so maybe the marines have a chance," but then you get that hope ripped away when they adapt and take an alternate route.
Funny story, my grand parents lived in britain for a while with my dad and uncle in the early 80's. They went to school and played in a soccer team and the girl who played newt was on their team. Nothing too special, but when they moved back here to america they got to hear about how kids would bully her because they were jealous she was in a big successful movie but hey, kids are kids whatever. Shes doing great though, so its nothing to fret about lol
That's really interesting! I never actually saw the theatrical cut before. I was absolutely duped by the idea of "more/uncut = better!" but you're 100% right, those scenes never did sit right with me, and I didn't realise that drawn out spoiler section showing future 80s offices in space wasn't in the original. That's a lot of extras for something that didn't make cinema!
Might have to rip the dvd & splice myself together a Mayo cut now. That turret scene really is essential, I love holdout scenes. Probably why I've played the Desperate Alliance mission in Starcraft about 100 times.
10:02 that's true and also the reason why Columbo was and still is such a brilliant series. The fact that they managed to invert the order of the events of the typical crime story and they show you the murderer and how they commit the crime first and then the investigation by Columbo and manage to make that the strong point of the series was a stroke of genius.
Exactly, Columbo is brilliant!
We don't talk about Mrs. Columbo.
Midsomer murders also did it well, showing the murder without giving away too many details so you'd still be trying to work it out.
Awesome video about one of the best sequels (and imo movies in general) ever.
I fully agree with your opinions.
Although (as a fan of the first 2 movies) I love the directors cut because all the extra content (and hey, more of this legendary movie is never a bad thing)
If you are someone who's never seen Aliens however I highly recommend watching the theatrical version (if possible) first, exactly because of the reasons you just mentioned.
ESPECIALLY the colonist part which indeed ruins a lot of the mystery and suspense you get from a first time viewing.
But man, The first 2 Alien movies are total masterpieces of Sci Fi Horror cinema.
Maybe only topped by the also legendary The Thing from John Carpenter
Too bad they started ffing up the franchise with all these (at best) mediocre sequels.
Totally. The extra stuff IS very interesting to see I just wish it had been just deleted scenes that were released, not an assembled cut. Because its prevalence has all but erased the availability of the original cut. Most people I know this generation okay know the directors cut.
@@underthemayo Thats something I noticed too.
The Directors cut is almost the only version available nowadays and imo the theatrical cut is in its whole by far superior.
I love the extra scenes which show more of what happened (but then again I can dream both first 2 movies) but I agree that they should stay in a "deleted scenes" section instead of replacing the suspense and build up that the theatrical version had.
Luckily I still own both the theatrical and directors cut.
@@underthemayo I dont see why you would want to have them be separate, they were part the directors original vision apparently and have them be separate and not part of a full story lessons their impact as a scene.
I wouldn't say you lose the mystery, because outside of a comic you don't theatrically see what exactly went down in the colony; your mind will fill in the blanks in a very horrific way.
That "theatrical plus sentry guns" cut sounds absolutely perfect. Maybe I'll make one of my own :) Love your reviews/analyses! Keep 'em coming!
I grew up watching this on dvd and I never knew that it was the directors cut? Thanks again for a great vid!
I knew it was but i also grew up with this version, i kind of can't go back to the theatrical version of the movie
The only 2 scenes i knew was part of the Director's cut was the reveal that Ripley was a mom but i always tought that was already stablished in the first movie, and the turret sequence
Solid takes, especially on the turret scenes. I liked how the last turret still had a shell count on it before the aliens found another way in; the rationale that number demonstrates is part of what made them scary to fight against.
I kinda love that line though, WE GOT NUKES, WE GOT KNIVES, WE GOT SHARP STICKS!
The cinematic cut is the best cut. It's streamlined, and gives all the detail required. Sometimes the best film-making happens in the editing suite.
There's a TV cut that is basically just the theatrical cut with the sentry gun scene in. I think that's my favorite version.
Here i come to watch some interesting cuted out scenes that i have never seen, and realised that all the time i were watching accual Directors cut.
But still i would prefer directors cut still more, may be only fast forwarding at start till Marine's Ship.
I adore Aliens and I really wanted to watch this and find more to disagree with but your reasoning is pretty sound. Ripley having a daughter ties the theme of Motherhood together but it isn't REALLY necessary since we see her form an organic bond with Newt right before our eyes so we don't need to be told she's a Mom.
I do wish they'd kept the Hudson stuff, but that's mainly because I love Bill Paxton and I can see why it was trimmed down as far as it was. The turret scene is definitely the one big one they should have kept, the first time I saw that I kept wondering why they cut it, it really ratchet's up the tension.
I don't see how you can say it isnt necessary, sure we get why in the orgies version we see her care about her but with that added scene it flashes it out even further and makes her initiative to care about newt more emotionally impactful because of the daughter she lost. So I guess you could say it changes her character a bit and possibly gives their relationship more depth rather than a women seeing a child and feeling sorry for her and take her under her wing.
@@lampad4549 From a character perspective we don't need Ripley to have ever been a Mother for her to form the bond she does with Newt, the bond speaks for itself and works on it's own. Thematically, of course, the deleted scene works, because of the whole Motherhood theme. Like I said though we watch her build the bond with Newt organically and form a real human connection with her, so there really isn't a need for the deleted scene.
I love how you can be critical in a superbly intelligent way, I was onto this after being let down by the directors cut of terminator 2
RIP Bill Paxton. The only man to die at the hands of the alien, predator, and terminator.
I don’t know how much sense it makes, but I’ll always like the special edition more. I can see how the new scenes can have issues but I see every one of them as being classic and super memorable scenes and I can’t really see the movie without them.
Theatrical cuts are the actual movie though. Because that’s what was ultimately decided on. The directors cut is actually like a facsimile. The theatrical cut IS the movie the way they wanted it.
17:06 it feels like a suicide pact, where Ripley goes to a suicide mission and Hicks will stay even if everything blowup, without it, the feeling is that they are gonna accomplish the mission
I never write comment but im writting the second one on this channel. Really want to show support. Fantastic, entertaining and refreshing. God job Sir
I agree with some parts, but to be honest, the only parts that I would have liked to be cut are the ant/bee hive scene and the awkward stalling romantic name dropping scene, and maybe the colony pre-attack scene, I cant decide about that one. The daughter reveal scene is nice, the badass weapons exposé is funny, the turrets just make it make more sense
Turrets are definitely a keeper. I'd be fine keeping the daughter scene as long as we cut the colony pre attack.
I don’t mind some of the changes, but yeah sometimes less is more. Still better than the fucking 20 hour directors cut of Apocalypse Now aka “Plantation Living in Vietnam: the Movie”.
Yeah, Redux completely killed the pacing.
Redux is honestly one of the worst edits to any movie ever, the original was perfect but the new one has more pacing issues than Attack of the Clones. So much unneeded filler.
Oh man don't get me started on once upon a time in Americas missing 6 hour cut
"it's a bit like DooM, but i can assure you it's totally original" This is an inside joke related to a 3DMM video
Having your own viewers’ cut does sound like a great idea.
Let’s turn that into a more common thing to do
The good thing about Ripleys daughter scene is it helps it be more consistent with alien: isolation, well for me anyway, I know you might not be too pleased with that.
Robocop > total recall > Star ship troopers
Paul Verhoeven was teh BEST DIRECTOR of the late 80s early 90s
I saw the director's cut without knowing and the wonder and mystery when they arrive to the colony was still very present, I don't know how much seeing the colony before the attack affected my viewing experience but it wasn't by much
I still think Alien is better than Aliens, but they're different styles of movies and I can appreciate both and understand why someone might prefer Aliens.
I probably used to like the special edition, but now I think I agree with you. The tighter editing of the original cut is preferable.
First off I totally agree with your assessment of the special edition (which I don't think is considered a directors cut...I think the theatrical cut IS the director's cut), the pacing and the reveals lose so much of their impact in the special edition. The flow of the theatrical version of Aliens is superb and it's had to imagine anything making it better.
I remember lusting after the special version. In the early 90's it was something you could only really find on overpriced bootlegs sold at conventions. I remember seeing it for sale for something like $50 and that was way, way out of my budget as an 11 year old or so.
I do think a brief version of the turret scene could have been cool. But it feels a little long in the special version.
Also just wanted to say that your channel has quickly become one of my favorites. I appreciate your calm demeanor and lack of sensationalism. I especially like the way you've commented on some of the Doom controversies without demonizing anyone. Thanks for the quality content.
Gotta' love the CRT screen @:48... Still one of my top three all time movies. The audio book from Audible is really well done, too.
Best part from the director's cut is the sentry guns scenes.
Excellent movie, probably my #1 favorite science fiction film.
Sucks we haven't gotten a new Aliens video game as great as 2001's AVP2 in years.
The turret scene is important for the reasons you said as well as it delivers a great amount of suspense. From the guns digital counter running, some guns running out of ammo, Hicks grabbing his gun like "this is it", to the guns smoking scanning with a minuscule amount of ammo left. "What now?" Shouldn't have been cut.
Try to make this short. I was a distributor rep in 86 . Saw the movie in the theater and when the video cassette came out I recognized the cuts immediately. All of my customers in my territory noticed also and when CBS released the real theatrical version on TV it was a huge scandal for the industry. The scene with Ripley and seeing her daughter WAS in the theatrical. This was the first movie that I know of that had a seperate cut just to try and save CBS Fox butt from thousands of video stores lawsuits. The directors cut/special edition IS the original I saw in 86. The free screening copy I received from the studio 3 months before release was also complete.
I really enjoyed this video, a nice break from DOOM Eternal. I would definitely like to see more film stuff from you in the future as I found your points very well thought out and criticisms valid. Also props for referencing Better Call Saul as one of the shows that uses a more drawn out length to it's advantage, that's exactly the example that I thought of too and it was really satisfying to have it listed off.
I hate how Alien 3 just threw away corporal Hicks and Newt.
It was a devastating story direction. Definitely. Still. Alien 3 directors cut us a fascinating film with some good ideas. Interesting movie. I oddly like it.
@@underthemayo I've always loved it. As a young teen I saw it 3 times at the cinema. If you watch the making of documentary it's a miracle anything was even made. The studio did everything possible to shit on any chances of good film, but imo David Fincher and the actors stilled pulled off something great.
With a good budget and creative freedom, it would have been incredible.
A funny aspect of the scene in which Hudson struts, listing the weapons they have: the last ones mentioned are melee (knives and pointed sticks) and seem quite primitive for the technological level shown...as well as totally useless against a xenomorph. 😂
having your own personal version of the movie is a good idea. i have many films where shit got changed in a new cut or bluray, so i mix and match them all to make the best version of the film it can be.
The Madooka Magooka Film Cuts Collection
Yeah, maybe i should start seeing this movie as a really good action-horror film more than an alien sequel. I feel that if i see it that way it seems a bit dissapointing (to me). This video has helped me see things i didn't see when i watched the movie, such as the pacing and the utility of the overconfidence of the soldiers.
I agree with pretty much everything you said here. I still think the director's cut should be watched after you have seen the theatrical release and if you want to dig deeper into the lore of the Alien universe.
No matter what you say or think, DIrector's Cut will always be better.
10:09 Colombo is the only detective show where you always knew whodunnit. The mystery was how Colombo would nail the baddie
Took the words out of my mouth. I LOVED the turret scene. Maybe I need to make my own cut lol
Nice video
I didn't know I first watched the Director's Cut.
Where can I find a version of the theatrical cut with the turrets added? It would be the definitive version for me too haha
Me after reading Threathical Cut. Curator's Cut. If you don't know what that means and whatever, it's about The Dark Pictures Anthology games. Those games simply just got 2 Versions which includes playing with a Different character or not. Sometimes it's the Exact same with the same Characters but in a good way. Also those games had co-op which made it way better.
I had the Newt's Adventure comics that went heavily into detail about Hadley's Hope and its fall. What happened to the colonists in a matter of days. It was a good two part comic book series. The second part is just continuing through Aliens which was unnecessary. Wish the second part continued on the horror of Hadley's Hope. Where I'm going with this is that this should have been the supplementary material to go to for what happened to the colonists and not a scene added into a movie years later.
The Directors Cut adds so much. The atmosphere is much better with all the extras.
This video is sacrilege!!
You're sacrilege!
“I hate your face.”
@@ghfjfghjasdfasdf My face is the greatest in Koradai!
In one of the special features in the Alien Quadrilogy DVD edition of Aliens, Cameron said that cutting Hadley's Hope's pre-infestation scene was producer Gale Ann Hurd's idea. Cameron himself struggled to cut anything following the studio mandated runtime. It seems as though Cameron hates to restrain himself and it only got worse over time. Avatar 2 is a 3 hour feature that could've been cut down to 2. I look forward to seeing fan edits.
I usually watch the directors cut but skip the cut to the colony at the beginning. Works for me.
17:20 - nah that's a nervous lady saying goodbye to someone who she has a crush on. I've always liked the slight awkwardness of that scene. But that's me.
I actually like the "see you hicks" scene, she's trying to reassure herself that she's coming back. It makes sense. A few seconds of apprehension doesn't really ruin the pacing, but increases the tension and adds humanity.
So she has literal minutes to find Newt whose been taken and could possibly be already impregnated by the alien, and you’re saying that tension is NOT broken by her taking 10 precious seconds to say goodbye to someone she hardly knows? It doesn’t make sense because of the timing. Not because of their obvious attraction. It would make sense if she wasn’t trying to save newt on a minuscule time scale. But right there in the movie?! No makes absolutely zero sense. It is not the time for flirting. Flirt later in the escape vehicle.
@@ClipZ_Gaming_1 She's going into certain death, she takes a few second to reassure herself that she's coming back by telling hicks that she will see him again. It makes sense, and it doesn't break the tension but increases it.
i completely agree, i like the extra scenes as a curiosity because ive seen the movie so many times, it was nice to see nothing new, but they add nothing to the movie and you make a valid argument that the movie is better without them
I just want to watch Aliens now.
I do not have the time to watch Aliens this week Mayo.
Thanks for that lol.
9:58
Ehm... Columbo??? ;)
The exception that destroys the rule.
Personally if I could have the theatrical cut with the Ripley’s Daughter scene and the sentry gun subplot I think that would be my preferred version, I never liked the scenes set in the colony before the attack, takes away the mystery too much.
100% agree the turret scene is the only thing that should be in a Final Cut. Making Ripley a mother is a MASSIVE and UNNECESSARY retcon. It ruins the Special Edition for me. For exactly the reasons laid out here. She’s a child-free career woman in the first film. A survivalist with a cat.
Her love for Newt is more powerful without that retcon. And it is less tokenizing of parenthood and children.
Absolutely agree on the sentry turrets. I think the colony scene works great for a second viewing, but yeah, it shouldn't be there if it's the first time you're watching the film.
I’d dig you doing a play through of aliens isolation
It strikes me that the colonist scene is a problem of placement. Placed after the conversation with Newt it could work, though honestly there's not enough value to breaking the tension remaining at that point. But if you're gonna include it, it needs to be post Newt talking. I'm with you on the gun turret set piece, if you were to tell me 'you get to restore one cut scene' on this film, that would be the first thing I'd think of, and likely the one I'd settle on even if I had literally everything laid out before me. Part of why it's worth keeping is the threat level increase of the aliens. (Oh and then you go and mention just adding that in. So I guess we agree. Heh.)
good video but needs more bananas
Aliens is arguably (ha) my fav movie, your thoughts on this subject are on point, I never thought of how the D-cut would actually alter the drama unfolding, excellent points
Robo is indeed fantastically paced
I hadn’t seen the theatrical version until it had a special viewing at my local theatre in 2019. Before, I last watched the theatrical version in 1991. The special edition is my favourite version. I respect your views and analysis however, the points you made don’t bother me at all, and I still absolutely enjoy watching the special edition.
Although, I would definitely recommend someone who has not seen Aliens to watch the theatrical version first.
The statement that good movies don't benefit from an extended cut isn't really right. Take the entire Lord of the rings trilogy: it is great as it is, but I can't watch the normal version anymore. Return of the king needs to be 4 hour long.
I prefer the director's cut, because I can see Sentry guns :)
The scene where Ripley learns about her daughter is good and should have been in the Theatrical Cut. The turret scene is nice, but not essential. The scenes on Hadley's Hope showing the colonists and Newt's parents ruin the tension and were cut for a good reason.
I loved Outsider and enjoyed Devs, so for TV shows I defiantly prefer longer episodes and I prefer binge watching. But I defiantly prefer theatrical cut of Aliens. When I last watched Aliens directors cut, I simply skipped alive colony scenes, because they are defiantly hurt this movie a lot. Completely agree with you about every scene.
For a long time, I preferred the special edition, but then as I got older, I started to favor the theatrical cut. I don't believe for a second that James Cameron's vision for the film was sacrificed by the studio, unlike films such as Blade Runner (1982) and Dune (1984). There really didn't need to be an extended cut of Aliens.
The Aliens in the second film insult the intelligence of the Alien in the first movie. I enjoy the second movie for an action movie, but the first film is far superior.
Yeah it's my main issue with this movie, it downgraded the aliens intelligence to the bugs they used as a basis for the hive and queen concept.
Fun fact!!! Private Vasquez the badass Latino is also john Connors foster mother in terminator 2. Sooooo yeah just thought someone else might want some useless movie trivia
I prefer the Director’s Cut but I can definitely see where you’re coming from.
When you find a movie that has no cut scenes or scenes that change or expand on the story? Then, the director and editor knew the story they wanted to tell, period.
robocop
I like the turret scene too but the reused shots of aliens getting killed completely destroys the scene for me.
Totally agree, theatrical cut way better because of the pace and tension
Should defo do more vids like this excellent work!
NUMBER ONE THIS IS ONE MAN'S OPINION, WHAT DO I CARE ? SECONDLY, DO WE REALLY NEED ALL THAT INFORMATION ON A 37 YEAR OLD MOVIE ? MY OPINION, NO. HOW MANY TIMES CAN ANYONE WATCH A MOVIE BEFORE IT BECOMES BURNT OUT? NO MATTER HOW GOOD AND HOW MUCH OF A CLASSIC IT IS. THIS IS NOT
THE WIZARD OF OZ. OR WEST SIDE STORY. THINK ABOUT IT.
Good breakdown.
Agreed to disagree, though.
The only scene I can be convinced that is really throwaway is the scenes in the colony before the aliens. And even here I disagree about conclusion that it breaks the suspense somehow - we don't know what exactly happened in colony, we only see inciting incident, and call me stupid, but I wouldn't expect to see Newt after her introduction. All the scenes of Rippley on the space station I'd see as "life sucks, might as well try to seek comeback on my personal horrors" scenes. But that's me.
As for "see you Hicks" scene, I always felt that Rippley here acts impulsive in the scene right before that awkward goodbye, where she goes into sudden realization of "am I really going in there alone?", and after getting affirmation from Hicks she solidifies in her decision and now goes in level headed, not just impulsively running to save a child as theatrical cut would suggest. But maybe I'm just trying to see more in a throwaway scene.
I’d love a movie on StarShipTroopers. That movie is fucking godly Mayo
Don't even get me started on APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX !!!
P.S. if you do manage to put together the perfect Aliens cut, please share.
At 10:00 minutes you talk about it being not much fun watching the detective find the clues if we as the viewer already know the murderer, the mudered and how it was done.
Meanwhile one of my favorites shows is Columbo in which that's every episode lol.
Same here! Even the "bad" Columbo episodes are pretty good!
For my next run through my "list of 10 movies I watch every year" (which includes Aliens and Robocop) I'm going to get the Director's cut and assemble my own version (bascially everything except the turrets goes, like you suggested). Same thing with Terminator 2 (also part of the list), I like some of the added scenes, but they screw up the pacing for me in some places and I loathe the alternate ending.
6:06 Okay, so, excuse me if I'm socially inept or something but, why the fuck do so many characters throughout media do this exact thing when mourning someone, putting items of emotional value up to their nose and covering their mouth, I've seen it SO many times and only just noticed it with this video.
i love how diverse your channel is
Question, what if the colony scene is played AFTER they meet newt and acts as a flashback to her telling the story of the colonists. Wouldn't it work then?
I hadn't thought about it, but sure. As a flash back it would work better because it wouldn't affect the facility reveal. But I don't think it would stop feeling unnecessary. Still best left as a deleted scene to be viewed apart from the film.
Nice analysis. I also agree that the theatrical cut is superior, more mystery, more intense.
Completely agree with your analysis. I totally prefer the theatrical cut.
Yeah I agree. But DAMN, the turrets!
Would love to see you make a similar video about Terminator 2)
Best action horror movies:
Aliens and Predator. The special effects and suspense in those movies still hold up today. Also, now I am glad I never saw the Director's Cut of Aliens.🤣🤣
Ripley being a mother doesn’t really make sense. She’s already been part of a crew traveling interstellar distances in stasis. Her daughter would have been loooong dead
If you saw the special edition first you would not know the newt survived. You only know that if you had seen the theatrical release already.
The turret section sucks because they use the same frames of an alien exploading (mainly the one that Vasquez kills and it sprays Drake) too many times. They try to hide it by mirroring the frame but it's just too obvious. Shit like this happens a couple of time throughout the movie if you pay attention. But the turret scene just bombards you with that shit. This movie would have been perfect if not for this.
I feel virtually the same as you about all of this. The only thing I disagree with is that I'd leave in the part at the beginning in which Ripley discovers her daughter has aged and died. It really hammers home what she's lost and humanizes her.
I think the original HBO version of this movie included that scene and the turret scenes (which I love). That was the first version I saw back in 1987 or 88 probably (as a little kid), and I'd always missed those scenes and wondered if I'd only imagined them, right up until they were released in the special edition. The Gramblor cut of this movie would include the daughter and turret scenes and cut probably every other addition. The long colony scene is an interesting bit of this movie's history, but should have only been included as a special feature to watch separately from the movie.
I don't remember if you mentioned the extended boardroom scene in the beginning, but that sucks too.
Oh, BTW, Cameron is really terrible when directing/writing scenes of intimacy, and I think Michael Biehn's acting talents get stretched to the limit in those scenes as well. There's another embarrassing scene cut from the original, included in Terminator 2 Special Edition, in which a dream version of the Biehn character lovingly encourages Sarah Connor in the halls of the mental institution. Yikes.
Yep. Most of the times, theatrical cuts is the default go to !
2: well we do know what's down there if we've watched the first film lol! Even if you haven't watched the first it's still a bit of a mystery.
I ,for one, enjoyed every minute of extra footage the first time I saw it, as well as each subsequent viewing. I could see maybe a first time viewer having a bit of spoiled tension from the early scene of Newt but other than that it’s pretty free of spoiling or ruining tension. Rip let losing her daughter adds context to the rest of the film, and the autoturret scene reinforces the idea that the Aiens poke, prod and learn how to get to their goal.
