- In this video, I'll simplify the main terms used in RPGs (Role-Playing Games) for those new to the genre. While I won't cover every RPG genre and subgenre, I aim to address the confusion and lack of awareness surrounding these terms. I start from the very beginning, the tabletop RPG and go from there. Join me as I provide a general overview to help you navigate the world of RPGs with ease.

Honestly I do think that the distinction isn't really necessary except for action RPGs and turn based RPGs. I think that is a better description of the games than where they were made.
Sure, if that's all you need to inform your decision on whether or not you'd want to play something, that's great. I need more qualifiers than action/turn-based. Don't get me wrong, that is highly important for me, I prefer turn-based games but then in that respect there's classic turn-based, Real Time with Pause, there's the "wait-for-power-bar to fill" present in some JRPGs and JRPG-inspired games. Then there's the type and amount of character/party customization you can do, that also matters to some people, then there's whether or not you can influence the story in a meaningful way or not, that's also important to some other people. Different strokes for different folks.
I don't like that all new AAA games must be action, with RPGs, stealth, and every other genre mixed into it.
The reasons for that lie way outside the scope of both his video and my channel, but the indie realm is where you’ll still find gameplay experiences of old, just depends on what you're looking for.
Ah, RPG's....one of the few genres that is still getting good games from time to time ;)
If you look into all the indie RPGs I've covered over the years, there's good games all the time, you just need to dig cause they will not be surfaced by any recommendation algorithm. There's the occasional exception when a game goes on sale or gets featured on the Steam frontpage but those are rare and far between.

Heh, thanks. We'll see what the future has to offer together, but this video took a really long time to make, so don't expect anything of this scope anytime soon :) But, do expect other RPG-themed list videos that aren't your usual "best/top whatever" videos ;)
I feel like nowadays, video games are so synonymous with RPGs that the "CRPG" has kinda just become THE RPG. I don't really hear many people use the term CRPG anymore. In fact until I found this video, I didn't even know it was a term.
Nowadays we - as in older RPG players - use cRPG when referring to games that are either old or in the style of old PC-exclusive titles as opposed to console titles, which are synonymous with JRPGs. It's definitely the predominant RPG genre you'll find discussed on my channel since I've only ever really played PC games.
I'm so glad you brought up Souls-like games. Your definition follows what I've been thinking for awhile and it drives me crazy when people will literally fight and hate me over it.
You know what I think I never told you? I still play MUDs on my phone and it's the only subgenre I get absorbed in even on that platform.
A niche and mostly forgotten subject indeed...

I appreciate it but keep in mind that's just an idea at the current time. If I do eventually get to it, it's gonna be in the fairly distant future :)
WRPG could be an interesting subject to get into because there are games that you could classify as Western RPGs based on style and not geography. Divinity II, Bound by Flame, Too Human, Kingdoms of Amalur, etc.
Could be an interesting avenue for the future
I think the same applies to JRPGs.

You missed one: DRPG, or Dungeoncrawling Role Playing Game. These games are first person maze exploration, exemplified by the Wizardry series.
Have I though? I not only name-drop Wizardry AND feature footage from it at 02:33 but also mention "first person dungeon crawlers" at 04:26; so I dunno why you got that idea. Likewise I feature footage from several dungeon crawlers like Legend of Grimrock, Vaporum and Legends of Amberland... You can turn on CC on all my (non-stream) videos if there's issues in understanding what I say or if I go too quickly through stuff.

jrpg is story driven. focus on character development. wrpg is quest driven game focus on world building. jrpg is always have great spectacle on its magic/skill/enemy boss. darksoul series/elden ring can be counted as jrpg because it have spectacle great boss dragon like placidusax and can showcase its grandeous magic like in elden ring. thats one of many trait of jrpg. and still it can be counted as wrpg because their presentation about the main character is pure blank. its not story driven game who liked to tell story within the character or any conflict within party member

I've heard people say that a game where you play the role of a plumber trying to save his girlfriend from a giant ape is a Role Playing Game...
Life itself is one as well 😉 and I invested in weird skills like Speech amd Lore 🤣
You did leave out MMORPGs though and I would've liked a little more in depth talk about strategy rpgs.
Where could games like witcher 3, skyrim, starfield, cyberpunk, dragon age and mass effect!?
Could these be classified as WRPGs?
It depends a lot on how one defines WRPGs - my main characteristic being mainly PC-exclusivity, or at the very least PC-forward, meaning they should be developed to be mainly experienced on a PC - with a keyboard and mouse and everything that this entails: lots of dialogue options that lead to different reactions, several ways of solving quests including diplomacy and stealth-type approaches and of course, turn-based combat. The titles you mentioned wouldn't really make it into "my" definition of the Western RPG but they are clearly set aside from their Eastern counterparts through many more components, and my requirements are quite strict and obviously unpopular with the main bulk of RPG gamers out there.
Ultimately it doesn't really matter in which category something fits as long as you're enjoying your time. And this is true for any media regardless of format.

JRPGs (previously known as Console RPGs) is more a style now. I am fine calling non Japanese made rpgs jrpgs if they contain the style. In reverse, I don’t consider Elden Ring a jrpg for instance

Nowadays there's less clear separation between the genres, it’s smth that's been modelled by music and movies previously and a bit if a right of passage for many forms of art, this fusion or hybridization.

I would argue roleplaying through your avatar, your play style and your narrative is mandatory for a game to be considered an RPG.
If I can't choose my character, playstyle and narrative than I'm not roleplaying I'm simply playing a pre determined role like an actor.
I am not an actor, I'm a roleplayer.

People who think Diablo 2 is an cRPG game make me laugh. It is not, and if it is, please write why and provide solid arguments. IMO DIABLO 2 IS aRPG.
