- A 19-year-old woman was arrested Monday for allegedly pointing a green laser at a Miami-Dade Police Department aircraft, authorities said.
There needs to be stricter consequences for this type of stupid behavior... Imagine spending 2-4 years of training and 100k $ to get the commercial pilot's license and then some idiot happens to permanently impair your vision because they think it's funny to shine a laser at an aircraft.
maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine is the current federal sentencing guidelines.

To all the people who think a laser is harmless, it could damage your eyesight, effectively ending the career of the pilot. To those who never served in the military, you probably never heard of laser guided ordinance.

I would've let her go but fined her $1500. That is a decent enough amount to ensure she doesn't forget why she was fined in the first place.
Don't pay the fine, end up in jail and work it off as highway cleanup crew until paid in full.

Sadly this crap has been going on for many years now. I remember back in 2008 as a 16 year old, I was hanging around with some what was at that time friends. one of them started shining a green laser at a helicopter, I remember saying to him to stop, but he never stopped. the next thing the helicopter flew strait over to us and started hovering around. I decided to part ways with them. Turned out the helicopter was a royal naval air service sea king. the person doing it was never caught , thankfully he has grown up now, given we our all now 30+, I have long since stopped hanging around with them. The scary thing about this, some of the people I have seen in these reports are fully grown adults not some 16 year old idiots.

I have a couple of these I check the sky to make sure no aircraft are in the air if I play with it. Very difficult to train the light on an object half a mile away.

There's cameras in the helicopter, they zoom into your address. Then they call police dispatch and they send a cop to your address. There's a few RUclips videos out there on how they do it.

So If your pointing a bright laser at one, you best believe it will track you down immediately and follow you. A helicopter will not lose sight of you no matter how much ground you cover

Another issue with laser pointers is that someone has potential of getting a traffic ticket after someone else points such a laser at his or her car. If that driver is spoofed, he or she might crash his or her car or commit a traffic violation.

Why aren't laser safe glasses required at night? Safety glasses are required in other jobs.
Because people shouldn't be doing it? Also there isn't a single type of laser eye protection, you need ones specific to the lasers wavelength and some of them will restrict your vision in low light situations.
Some laser eye protection glasses also makes some instrument screens in the cockpit appear blank to the pilots when wearing them.
