Square should really focus on AA games instead of chasing after NFT and service game hypes. Less budget, less risks regarding single titles and more room for games that don't have to appeal to everyone. Besides all of the recent service game shutdowns I think that 2022 was quite a good year for them when it comes to their smaller releases. Admittedly the games are still on my backlog as I haven't played many 2022 games in general yet, it's just too much older backlog. 2023 doesn't seem to help as there is so much interesting stuff coming up.

The trouble is, the CEO of Square Enix wants to force this crap in even though the message from us gamers is clear, we don’t want it! It concerns me greatly because Square has upcoming games that loads want to play such as FF7 Remake part 2. He just seems ignorant to that.

    • @MiamiSunrise

Square is typically good if not great with JRPGs as a main focal point and the more they stray from that it seems like the more flops and troubled releases they have seen. Im fine with taking chances now and again but they should stick with what they do best.

Moving away from NFTs is great, but Square would be shooting themselves in the foot if they abandoned the AAA space.

Opus: Echo of Starsong is a game that literally had me cursing at myself in anguish by the end. It was so damn beautiful and joyous but also simultaneously painful and gutwrenching that I genuinely had to collect myself during the credits and distract my mind from the thoughts and ideas it left me with. Its a game that made me evaluate my own life's meaning in a way that only Nier Automata ever has, and even then I would say the feelings Opus left me with were far too complex to say I simply felt "joy" or "sadness" by the end. It had me pondering everything from my faith to every one of my relationships I've ever held
Like TKN said, it's a game that will leave you thinking. Not about the game or even it's characters, but about yourself and the life you live with those around you. I know there are other games from this developer, but I don't think I'd be able to handle another game from them in the near future lol, it's a lot. They are incredibly proficient at both writing dialogue as well as sound design/creating incredible music that will have you under it's hauntingly beautiful spell of curiosity before you know it. The gameplay also goes so naturally with the storytelling structure, that to dissect it as its own component and call it good/bad would be a disservice to how it actually feels while youre playing it. I can't help calling this game a "visual novel" has turned people away when those words are just not representative of the experience you have.
If you just like good stories in media, Opus Echo of Starsong is one of the best and most meaningful experiences you'll ever take part in.

'Triangle Strategy' was a joy to play and it held up to high expectations for me personally and my top pix for 2022, the way the choices affect not only the story but which party members you get begs for more than one playthrough.

Nice list, glad you had such a good time with these games. I finally finished Xenoblade 3 myself recently. The final Boss was awful and way too long. I played TMS a few years ago and also really enjoyed it. Just like How I'm currently enjyoing Engage. Engage has been a great game so far and I love it. I also played a few games in 2022, but I don't really remember which games I played. Or rather finished. I am making myself another coffee and then I will finally finish Cold steel 1 today or tomorrow. I hope you can get your main rig back soon. PC troubles are always terrible.
Personally, I have decided to ride the disabled train and live a good life with a bunch of free time while I go about my day and just live. I am going to work part time in a disabled workshop and I will do all I can to just comfortably live my life. And maybe adopt a few cats while I'm at it. I hope I can finish Cold Steel this weekend. Started my 2023 with Kuro no Kiseki. Am now about 50h in and am loving it so far. Likable and interesting characters, fun combat, and the new engine really is a step up from Hajimari (Even though CLEs version ist limited to 1080p). I also really enjoy the new seiyuu cast. While I agree that the music quality seems to have gone down, it's still good and has some really amazing tracks like "What is ahead of you" or "Rise of the grendel".

Opus: Echo of Starsong really hit me in a way I never expected. I found it on GamePass and decided to give it a shot. I finished it in one night and had tears streaming down my face at the end - but I don't even know why. The ending was sad, sure, but it's not as if I haven't seen sadder endings. But the journey... There is a sense of anguish and exploration and struggle throughout the story, and from the beginning you have an idea of where it ends up but you're continously driven forward in hope.
It's such an incredible experience, and the OST really pushes everything forward as your heart wrenches with each step you take towards the end because, well, you don't want to do it but you must. It's a lovely analogy of life.

One for gaming, one for music production and one to control my 3D printer). I have played Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE with an emulator, but the Encore version is sadly too much for the present emulators. I can only hope this game will some day been ported to the PC. I would buy it in a heart beat, really. That is also true for Sakura Wars and Xenoblade Chronicles.
I still have to play Trails into Reverie that's coming in about a half year, and the Kuro games are still a distant dream for us Western gamers. So - I sadly have not played much of the games you name here, but maybe in the future?

I played in 2021 but Sakura Wars is easily a recent favorite of all time. I agree everything you said about the visuals, I'm a huge fan of Kubo's style so bonus, it's such a good feel happy time in such an amazing universe. The series in general definitely puts more focus in the visual novel aspect over the briefer action segments, mostly to serve as anime episode climaxes to whatever character arc is the focus of the chapter. Previous games were strategy rpg like during battles, but also very shallow in that regard. It's always been 90% about your time spent with the various characters and just feeling good.

he absolutely adored it and has had it ever since, so a little after that I thought why not showcase him the whole story of Cold Steel (seeing as it's the more visually appealing so easier to get into for new players) at first he was more so humoring me, by the end he's making fanfics about the series and wants to play through the Sky games now on his own
it always makes me happy when I have someone I can talk to about the series and welcoming them into the church of Aidios was a really fun experience (also I played all 4 games on Nightmare and that gave me the push that I needed to try and finish all of the games on Nightmare (prior to doing that I had only finished Cold Steels 1 and 2 and Sky FC on Nightmare)

I just finished Star Ocean The Divine Force about a week ago, but only with Ray. There are some major things I disliked. The huge, mostly empty open areas, in the towns you barely have anything to do and you usually just go to a town for a cutscene or two, then quickly leave. I forgot each town in less than a minute after leaving. I really liked the characters, but except for the 2 main characters, they only really did anything for me during their private conversations. I wish more of that was in the main story, because there, you actually got to know the characters, like how Marielle likes cats. It's just something minor, but it makes all the difference. I actually liked the story. But what I didn't like were the skill trees, being mostly just stat increases. Also, I miss the different kinds of planets from Star Ocean 4. Sure, we visited a few of them, but it left me wanting more. Except for the characters, I prefer SO4 more in almost every regard, though I like both battle systems the same. I know SO4 isn't very popular, but if you'd ask me if I want to re-play 4 or 6, I'd pick 4. I might sound like I'm disliking SO6, but no, I honestly liked it and I want to see more SO games in the future.
I bought Sakura Wars the day it came out and I think I already wrote my opinion of it under a previous video, but I literally have the same opinion as you. A breath of fresh air, lackluster, but still somewhat servicable combat which I ended up enjoying more than I thought I would. It's unlikely, but I hope we'll see a sequal.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was amazing. The cast felt a bit too serious for my taste, but that's probably my biggest issue with the game. Everything else was super good, the music, story, battle system, etc. It's insane they were able to push the poor, extremely underpowered Switch this much on a technical level too.
I only played 2 Atelier games so far, both of the Ryza titles, but I've heard so many good things about Sophie 2, that 1 is on my wishlist.
Needless to say every new Trails game is on my radar, it's the main reason why I subscribed. I'm a patient person, but I'm losing some hope, how insanely long we have to wait for a translation. I fear the day will come where the official english releases will cease to exist.

I Did explain How i got into Trails of Cold Steel Once, But didn't Explain it in Detail, so Here's how it Went:
It All Started when I Got Done Beating Kamoshida from Persona 5 ROYAL and Got off to be Done for Today, Couple Hours Later, I See Julian (My Brother) Play The First Cold Steel Game a Little Bit Almost 5 to 6 Times as I'm Recovering to Head on Over to The Next Palace Boss in Persona 5 ROYAL and as I'm Seeing More Story and Gameplay from Trails' First Cold Steel Game, I Said, "Okay, Ykw? I'll Take a Break from Persona 5 ROYAL for a Little Bit and Give The Game a Shot, See what it's About." For About a Day in Advance, I Grew to Liking the Characters a Lot More and as Soon as Laura and Rean are 'Communicating' with Each Other in CS1, I Started to See a Connection with Laura and Ultimately Made her My (What Everybody Calls it) Waifu, So then When Rean Meets Crow Armbrust, I uh got a Little Unease with Him Especially After Stealing My 50 Zeni Coin (Or Whatever it's Called, It's Been 3 Years Lol) and Then When C First Appeared, First Thing that Came to Mind was I Called Him Mr. C-Man IMMEDIATELY! Towards the End of CS1, After Beating The 'Sub-Final' Boss from The Mansion in CS1, atm Back Then, I was Like, *WhY iS dA gAmE sTiLl GoInG?!?!?!* and Little did I Know, What Came Next After Saying that, I Claimed Crow as Mr. C-Man for The Remainder of The CS Series Because I Found out that Crow Armbrust was Commander C in Disguise as They Call Him in CS1, The Day After I Beat Persona 5 ROYAL and got The True Ending, When CS1 Ended, I Was Like, *NAH!!! AIN'T NO WAY DAT'S DE END?!?!* and Then From There, I Played CS2 & CS3 Thinking things get more Entertaining for Me and To Think it Wouldn't, Guess what, It Did Because the Next thing that Happens, when I Reached the End of CS3, It Left Me SPEECHLESS! And The Craziest Kicker, By the time I Beated CS3, CS4 was out on The PS4 for Over a Month because it Came Out the Day Before My Birthday on October 25th, 2020 and then When I Found out, I BEGGED for Mom to Get the Game for Me, I Had to Get it and Thankfully I did... With The Help of a Holiday Sale in December 2020, and Beating CS4 was AN EXPERIENCE! Not Only did I Get The Normal Ending (Aka The Sacrifice Ending), But as Well as The True Ending, AND The Secret Ending (Which is The True Ending with an Additional After AFTER Post Credit Scene) Seeing that Ending Picture after Beating CS4 in The Main Menu of CS4, I Sat there at 2 in The Morning Look at that Picture and Said, "...It's Finally Over, I Can Finally Rest this Chapter of Humiliation from Giliath Osborne Forever." and Then from there, I Shut Off the Console and Went to Sleep for The Rest of The Night (Even Though it Was already Tomorrow at that Point)

11:04 I know I'm a bit late, but a slight correction is that Monolithsoft is not moving away from Xenoblade as a series, but rather they are moving on from the story arc where XC 1, 2 and 3 take place, which is referred to as the Klause saga. I think it's unlikely they intend to move away from the Xenoblade series, considering that while XCX references the first game in many places, it does not take place in the same universe as any of the other three games. Whether they intend to now focus their attention on the X storyline, considering that they left us with far too many mysteries, or go on to a new storyline, I can't wait to see what's next from them.

Good list, but one that I liked out of 2022 that i think needs more love is Harvestella. But I think it suffers a little from SE's clumsy decisions:
    1) they marketed as a farming Sim with JRPG elements, when it's a JRPG with farming sim elements, it means people are more expecting SE-ified Rune Factory and find the farming elements aren't competitive and if you're after a farming sim, whilst it's not bad in Harvestella, you'll find games who do it better. It's real strength is in the story & characters, and heck, even though the jobs and battle system are basic, the jobs still feel unique from each other and you can still form your own play style based on jobs you 'equip'.
    2) It was too expensive, it was £50, which people are willing to pay for a good game, but it is still considered a AAA price and it's not a AAA game, sure I got many hours out of it, but from some of the reviews and comments I could see that people have gone in expecting some of the qualities of a AAA game. If it was £30, I think people would have different expectations and also more likely give it a chance.
    3) It was released in the lead up to Christmas and combined with its price, mean it was competing with Pokemon on the Switch and a few AAA releases on PC and other consoles.
But it was a charming JRPG where you could tell where all its inspirations come from, but make them its own and doesn't feel like nostalgia baiting, I found the characters and story interesting with some good twists, some predictable, some less so. I am normally skeptical of JRPG's that try to tap into the nostalgia of old JRPG's, because I've played my handful of bland ones.

I also played, and beat, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which is amazing because I couldn't stay interested enough to finish the first one and I never gave the second one a chance. It is pretty good overall.
I also played Yuito's storyline in Scarlet Nexus. I started Kasane's storyline, though I haven't finished it and I'm not sure I'll have to the patience to finish it. Besides one or two areas of slight jank, the game's combat is very good.
