Now after you taught me, I honestly don't know why i paid my piano teacher. Too bad i saw this after. It would make most teachers bankrupt! Thanks for making it so clear and easy to understand. You are a very good teacher!
I am so glad I found you! I don't know why you haven't got more views… That perfectly explained everything I was looking for and you were easy to understand and clear and precise. Thank you, excellent video! Please keep making them! :)
This is one of the best music videos on RUclips. Everything laid out clearly and completely with excellent visuals. You deserve many thousands of subscribers! I am learning guitar but I find piano videos are sometimes more clear and thorough.
Thank you for this! I haven't had a proper theory class in almost 30 years and I have to take a test for my teaching certification and needed a quick refresher on the chords I don't usually use in my classroom. THANK YOU!
O what a pleasure to have every thing falling so perfectly in place. I play the violin, and only now am starting out on keyboard (and I am a head-level person😄). With your clear videos I have understood the intricacies of scales, intervals etc. Earlier (on the violin) I just remembered to play G scale: 1 sharp, D scale: 2 sharps.... Now looking at the keyboard, I know why it is so. Also you made triads and chord inversions so simple. I thank God for your knowledge and expertise. Organ practice is going to be a pleasure from today. Just discovered you, and have made notes on your 8 piano Quickies👌 God bless you for your generosity in sharing.
You actually got me started with music theory back before I got my first guitar. You’re the most lucid teacher. You explain all of this the way I understand it best. Thank you!
This is probably one of the best tutorials on line for beginners, and i've been through hundreds of them. There are so many lessons on youtube its hard to know where to start. Thank you and well explained. This is a must go to video for learning chords.
Best 7th chord lesson I ever come across, solve all my puzzles with the magic 7 jazz chords. This series is amazing, thanks a lot for making the series👏🙏👍
yet again i took notes on a paper to memorize and everything was crystal clear. thanks again now i know all the scales, triads and 7ths! you're a really good teacher, keep it up! onto chord inversions now
Just what I needed. For over 25 years now, I've been playing all the main chords and some of the professional ones but I learnt some more professional ones today and also about their anatomy. Thank you. :-)
I wish I'd had all this explained to me before so clearly. Thank you very much. My understanding of this is now much more secure. I really appreciate the instruction you give on your channel.
Great, simple way of explaining the chords. I'll be doing my grade 10 practical exam in piano and this is very helpful for me to identify the chords! Thanks
You, Sir, are AWESOME!!! I started to learned how to play piano 2 weeks ago. Let me correct that: I touch a piano/keyboard for the first time 2 weeks ago, I actually understand piano. I am 52 years old. Thank you very much!!!!
I was looking for this exact vide as I’m trying to teach someone the correct names, but I was getting confused with the dominant 7 and major 7, and you explained it perfectly. Thank you !
Thank you for your clear and concise demonstration regarding the construction of seventh chords. I now find myself inspired to build those chords in all keys.
My pleasure, Max. Practicing it in all keys is hard but really pays off in the long run. You should start off with the most common ones (minor 7th, major 7th and dominant 7th), and after you know those move to the more "esoteric forms".
This is a great video with clear diagrams . It is very well explained outlining all the possible 7 and major seven chords. Is there a video on how to form 9 th 11 th , 13 th chords .
Which video of yours should I watch to learn how a pianist and/or songwriter decides at what point a 7th chord would work well within a progression, and if so, WHICH 7th chord? Surely there has to be more to it than just what sounds right to the ear, such as resolution and voice leading. Thanks.
Thanks a lot once again I am following your classes so easy to understand unless... If I knew you earlier I would be a music legend already. And I am still gonna be hahaha. Actually I am already just needed more of this classes of yours hahaha. I compose music but my chords are limited, so chose studying more on RUclips. You helped a lot. Grateful to land here.
If I get it, major7= root +4+3+4 half tones, dominant7=+4+3+3, minor7=+3+4+3, diminished7=+3+3+3, half diminished=+3+3+4, augmented7=+4+4+2, augmented major7=+4+4+3, minor major 7=+3+4+4 right?
Great content as always! Can you please do a video on the "feel" for 7 chords? I mean, what kind of situation that accommodates a major 7, or just a 7, what styles are usually associated with them and so on. Thank you!
There might be some video on it on the internet, but I would rather watch it from the best of all piano resources: you. It is never too much to stress the nice work you do. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm sure you've already noticed it, but in case you haven't there's a later tutorial (Piano Quickie 8) that extends this one into all types of chords.
brilliant teaching. Learnt more in a couple of videos than from a couple of lessons. I have have one thing to ask. Say if I build an F minor triad or 7th from a major scale, should I then be using the minor scale to build the melody on top of that? As I understand it, you always build a chord from the major, but then the scale you play in whatever chord you've built (if you've built a minor chord you play the rest in the minor scale for example). Could someone clear this up for me?
I'd like to know, so do those 8 different types of chords (Dominished, Maj 7th, Min 7th etc) apply to every note on the scale? So if you were to do an example of say… Bb, or Ab or any note you choose, all the same rules will apply?
+MangoldProject Dear Mangold: First a big thank you to your amazing videos. Almost 10 years of hard good work! My question is to the minor 7th: you say 1 b3 b5 bb7. Cant you say 6 for bb7 since on the major scale 2 semitones done is like 1 full tone. Are there special cases why you call it bb7? Thanks again for all the work and teachings!
How should one learn all different 7th chords with all inversions and in 12 keys...seems totally impossible and absolutely overwhelming. How to do it? Please make a vid about that. Cannot find anything on youtube on the subject.
That's an amazingly complex questions ... :) There is no clear cut answer. The simplest is that you should try to choose chords that share notes with your melody. Other than that, it's all about identifying common patterns in songs that you like.
Hey,+ MangoldProject I really understood the types of 7th chords in your video but I have a question,Ive tryed the method of the augmented 7th on B, with sus4 i found out B+7 chord and then i did the method of sus4thats where i got a little confused because i dont know how to omit a flat3 on the Bscalemy question is that, is there really a chord B+7sus4 (when you omit the 3 does it still have to be flat?)Ive tryed seaching it out but found nothing.
So could we use these for for a song and just change base notes or would you have to go to which ever key in the scale and construct the chord. Help me out here I wanna learn those jazzy 7-13 chords.
Hi Wesley. I have many, many videos about chords and chord voicings on my channel - just take a look. Check out my "interesting chords" series and playlist, too: ruclips.net/p/PLP9cbwDiLzdIx2es0VkKNYVjN7N34Ykmh
It's perfectly "legal" and is built on the C major scale, with a dominant 7th (b7) and augmented 5th (#5). That is, it's the C major scale but with "altered" degrees.
I mean, almost all chords are comprised of stacked thirds, except for that one. Unless you count diminished 3rds as well. But then C D E is a valid triad as well. But that is considered a tonecluster... See what I mean?
Now after you taught me, I honestly don't know why i paid my piano teacher. Too bad i saw this after. It would make most teachers bankrupt! Thanks for making it so clear and easy to understand. You are a very good teacher!
Lol. My thoughts exactly. I plan on teaching my 3 year old through RUclips
I am so glad I found you! I don't know why you haven't got more views… That perfectly explained everything I was looking for and you were easy to understand and clear and precise. Thank you, excellent video! Please keep making them! :)
Thank you Stephanie for the kind words. Yes, the rules apply to any note you start with, so you can use them to construct, say, Bb7 or Fmaj7.
Stephanie Schuurmans yea i think the same too...he is such an inspiration to me a learner like me
Stephanie Schuurmans and it's free!!!!
This is one of the best music videos on RUclips. Everything laid out clearly and completely with excellent visuals. You deserve many thousands of subscribers! I am learning guitar but I find piano videos are sometimes more clear and thorough.

Damn youve been playing piano for longer than double my age
This channel is a gem. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain each chord. This was extremely easy to follow.

Your tutorial are very much useful Pls make a video in context of the usage of these 7th chords in classical masterpieces works..thank you...
I have many of those on my channel ... Just browse and you'll find!

There is no clear cut answer to that, but try my Jazz Piano course here on RUclips (there's a playlist for it I made somewhere, just look around).

This is a great vedio... Thanks v much Sir... ✌️
Today i was blessed by your video. The info i wanted contained into a nice precise lil packet. TYTYTYTYTY!!!!!!!!
Very helpful. thank you! :)
This is amazing thank you

Learning all major 7 chords is difficult than I thought but I must understand them and know it. It can be a pain.
Fantastic!
thanks
Is it good practice to avoid using the 4th finger?
+MangoldProject
Dear Mangold: First a big thank you to your amazing videos.
Iam confused with 7sus4 chords and minor7sus4 chords🤔🤔🤔
whats better for learning, youtube or music theory classes, or think its relative to your learning strategy?
+Luke Brown Music theory classes with whom? A real life teacher? Then I'd say a real life teacher without a doubt.
How should one learn all different 7th chords with all inversions and in 12 keys...seems totally impossible and absolutely overwhelming. How to do it? Please make a vid about that. Cannot find anything on youtube on the subject.
Start by focusing on the most important ones (maj7, m7, m7b5, dim7) in the root position in all 12 keys.
Thanks a lot.. extremely helpful..
Thank you sir
Wow very concisce! thank you for this
Thanks man :)
Great video. So now that I learn the 7th chords, how would I be able to apply them to music?

Technically you could have such a chord, but I've never encountered one. It should have the notes: B, E (sus4), G (+5) and A (7th).
So could we use these for for a song and just change base notes or would you have to go to which ever key in the scale and construct the chord. Help me out here I wanna learn those jazzy 7-13 chords.

How to understand the dissonance note?
Is C aug 7 not an "illegal" chord since it's not built of minor and major thirds stacked on top of each other?
It's perfectly "legal" and is built on the C major scale, with a dominant 7th (b7) and augmented 5th (#5). That is, it's the C major scale but with "altered" degrees.
I mean, almost all chords are comprised of stacked thirds, except for that one. Unless you count diminished 3rds as well. But then C D E is a valid triad as well. But that is considered a tonecluster... See what I mean?
I wonder if it's a common or acceptable practice to drop the 5th when playing a chord?
+Ranger Trekker Very common and very acceptable. The 5th is the weakest tonality.
