When i was a teenager, our parents took us to the Catskill mountain area in upstate New York. While there, we visited a cavern, a tourist attraction, much like this one. It really was quite amazing...we had to go several levels below the surface & it was beautiful & eerie all at once...this place was huge & you could hear your echo when speaking. It was a guided tour & the guide talked about how old this place was. That whole area is so much more serene than NYC.
They are closed to the public. No one is going to disturb them. The problem is that those caves were filled with water before the miners blocked the walls and the reason why the crystals got so big is because the water helped the grow while minimizing damage from geological movements. So now that the water isn't there some have already fractured. It's extremely hot in there so it's difficult to spend a lot of time in there, but I really hope someday someone goes down there and does a very detailed video of the cave for the rest of us to enjoy.

Those are gypsum crystals. They only grow in a very wet environment or in sweet water. Dry air destroys them. It‘s dangerous to go inside, because the humid air doesn‘t allow the sweat to evaporate which can lead to organ failure.
There are mines that were shut down many years ago with crystals just as impressive. It does not take millions of years, it just takes the right conditions.
You use to be able to do tours of the cave. My wife grew up only 40 minutes from there but when we went to visit they weren't accepting tours. Hopefully they open it back to the public

Temperature inside this cave is around 50 degrees celsius. Very few people can visit.
