So glad you enjoyed this new adaptation of West Side Story Lee. West Side Story means a lot to me as it's my dad's favourite musical, plus I was lucky enough to get to see West Side Story on stage years ago on a school trip with my music class when I was 14 years old as we were studying the music at the time. It was the first professional stage production of a musical I'd ever seen at the time, & I was blown away by it, & i have been a huge fan of musical theatre ever since. Can't wait to see this new version on Tuesday with my dad.
Just saw this. The original holds great nostalgic value for me, but this is an altogether deeper, richer, more complex and well-rounded adaptation. I envy anyone who gets to experience the musical for the first time with this film.
I saw the original in a high school film class... And we were not used to musicals... So, we all started laughing every time they would start singing... I remember our teacher saying afterward, "I don't think this movie was meant to be a comedy." lol
When you’re a Jet, You’re a Jet to the end!! ❤️ I LOVES me a good musical! Thank goodness for the amazing women in my life, that taught me that life’s great moments, are always better with a little song and dance!!! 💃🏼🕺🏼👯♀️. So excited to see this now! Thanks for the review, Lee!
I never knew I needed to hear you sing "Cool" but you have the vibe down! This was a masterpiece, thank you for giving it attention even though it's not what you'd normally cover. What a film!
It was fantastic! Saw it in Dolby Cinema and I never wanted it to end because of how amazing the cinematography is. Spielberg is a master and he is still showing us why he is the GOAT.
You posted about someone complaining that you review other genres other than horror, and love that you do. This is a very pleasant surprise. Not much into musicals myself, but Ive always love the original West Side Story. The music is beautiful, the choreography is fantastic and it does get you emotional. I was a little skeptical about the remake but now you got me excited to want to see this in the theater.
Great review, man! I love that you branch out from horror and do reviews for movies like this on your channel. I’m a massive horror fan but I also love lots of other genres so it’s refreshing to see you cover this movie, especially it being a musical.
@@DrumdumsOfficial that’s very true! Horror is my # genre but I basically watch and enjoy so many other genres. Content like this that branches out from your usual stuff is what separates your channel from a lot of the stuff out there and I really respect and appreciate it as a viewer!
Glad to hear! It’s my mom’s favorite musical but I never fell in love with it even though I love musical theater (rest in peace Stephen Sondheim. You were one hell of a composer, it just wasn’t my cup of tea). We’re going to watch this one when I come home for Christmas. I’m excited to give it a second chance!
I just saw this this afternoon and I loved it as much as you did! As a musical fan (as well as a horror fan of course), I was so happy seeing you praise this movie despite you not being a musical fan. Steven Spielberg is who he is because he is a master of visual storytelling and that is no clearer than it is here! I had chills in many of the scenes and my heart sank as the credits rolled. Also, rest in peace to the lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who is a Broadway legend who died a few weeks ago.
Nice to see a fellow Halloween fan enjoy this. Played Tony in a production 20 years ago. Many of our actors from that production I used in Halloween fan film.
I'm a big fan of the original and owned the movie soundtrack and the Broadway recording. You made in error in your review; the Puero Ricans and the Americans. Puerto Ricans are Americans and have been since 1917.
Saw someone else mention you are reviewing out of your normal zone for this. I appreciate that a lot! Love seeing reviewers try out different genres that aren’t the normal they usually see and actually allow themselves to enjoy it. I loved the movie. I only had seen bits of the original and was never too interested. However my mom LOVES the original. She saw it as a girl and it’s still one of her favorite movies. After this new one I asked if she liked it and she had tears in her eyes and said “I think this one is better.” I was dumbfounded lol. I thought she’d enjoy it but she actually said this one is better! I’m really happy she loved it so much. I loved it. The colors all were incredible, the dancing, the changes made to the story and song arrangements, having Rita back as a new character that fits perfectly! Definitely high praise from me.
I loved this. I didn’t realize how much I liked musicals until recently. They’re definitely not for everyone but this definitely had a great balance. Always hyped for Spielberg. Glad to see you review this.
I haven't seen this one, but most recent West Side Story related thing is the trailer for WWE Royal Rumble 2005, funny AF ad. 😂🤣 But I may check this out. Thank you, Lee.
2005, a few years before it went downhill for me. The WWE I mean. I miss the old days. I used to watch religiously back then. It was fun. It may still be fun for some ppl & that's great, but my time with it has come to a pass. I'll never forget all the good times though! Hell in a cell matches! Hell yes!
I'm looking forward to seeing how Ansel Elgort goes because I like Tony's songs the most (Maria, Something's Coming, Somewhere). If you want to see some great newer musicals, Chicago is awesome. Les Misérables is great too, but its very long.
I, for one, love musical but have never seen West Side Story and never have been interested it. However, I was interested in this film just for the talent alone. The reviews for this film have been so positive that imma watch it tomorrow. I’m so excited!

I went in thinking I would probably think it was ok at best, but ended up really enjoying it. I love love love the original film and west side story is one of my favorite musicals in general. But I wasn't sure about this when I heard about some of the changes. But I was surprised about how much I really liked it. The music, the style and the acting was terrific. The only complaint I had was just the placing of the song "somewhere" because that is Tony and Maria trying to find the light in a dark room together. I dont care for the change of it going to rita Marino's character. But still I will probably see this again. It honestly has renewed my faith in films today can still be good. Leave it to Spielberg, one of the greats to do so. But no one seems to acknowledge Spielberg's first remake of west side story called west side pigeons in animaniacs lol 8/10 for the movie 😁

Even though I have no interest in seeing this movie, I still watched the review and gave it a like. Not my genre, but I'm glad you really enjoyed it, Lee.
This generation’s ‘West Side Story’ remake looks interesting. Famous film director Steven Spielberg did a great job. I’m surprised that Rita Moreno from the original, Oscar-winning film appeared in the 2021 remake.
Great review, Lee. I actually just got out of seeing this movie. And my god, having never seen the original, I was not expecting certain turns that this movie takes. Overall, I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Spielberg always brings his A-game.
I had the privilege of seeing the 1961 movie without knowing anything about it. It was the late 1970s and it was being shown I think for the first time on television. I expected to hate this as I enjoy the original film (whitewashing aside). However Spielberg made this film work with the grittier aesthetic, having a more authentic cast and taking the ‘09 revival’s cue of using more Spanish dialogue & making “Cool” work in the first act. The music, songs and dances are all really good and I love Rita Moreno sings “Somewhere” which made me cry
I don't care what anyone says. Everyone has that one musical they like or sing from. For me it's either Little Shop of Horrors or Willy Wonka & 🍫 🏭. RIP Stephen Sondheim. Remember girls, if you gotta hobby named Bobby. You gotta give him up.
Being Puerto Rican myself and moving to the states later in life. I never saw the original due to the brown face that they did. So i cant compare it to the old film. But i looked at this one has a musical, not a Latino film. It had its moments, but a bit on the depressing side. But the music was pretty good. Im glad they remade it with actual latino's.

@@Godzillafan1980 I'm with you, I'll take something super average like The Lost World and put it above most blockbusters released in the 2010's/2020's so far.
New West Side Story: 1. Good idea to have Rita Marino inserted into the Steven Spielberg script of *West Side Story* 2. Best Actress role for Oscar nomination for Spielberg's version will be Maria (Rachel Zegler) and then Anita (Ariana DeBose) for supporting Oscar nomination. I think Rachel Zegler's acting for Maria, was better than Natalie Wood in Robert's Wise production. 3. Second choice for best supporting actress: Rita Marino. (yes again) 4. I did not like any of the character actors choice for either the Jets or Sharks in this Spielberg version. 5. I did not like the first act of the Spielberg version as much as the Robert Wise version, but the second act of Spielberg's version made up for the 1st act's shortcomings. Spielberg's first act of his movie was too, too, dark. 6. My choice for which movie was better would be the flawless *1st* West Side Story. Robert Wise was the better Director in this for the 1st Movie version of the play. However the second act of Spielberg's version made tears come from my eyes, but don't tell anybody as I don't want my manhood questioned. 7. In the first movie the Jet gang gave respect for the little girl playing on the ground and walked around her play area. In the Spielberg version the Jets ripped up the little girls artwork on the ground. I could not get behind the Jets after that. 8. The dance scenes in both versions were equally good. 9. Spielberg claimed he did not want to copy the first, Robert Wise version, however he did in the opening. In the first, Wise version, we have an aerial shot flying over Manhattan, in Spielberg's version we have an aerial shot flying over the demolished section of the gang area with same intro music. 10. Spielberg's version of West Side Story, should be nominated for *Best Picture* Oscar this year, however from the *WOKE* Hollywood, they might choose another low budget foreign movie made with no whites in it, that nobody will see, for diversity's sake. Then that will remind me of Marxist Korean movie (looked like a college student made film) winning Best Picture over "1917" a real professional movie. And like Spielberg's movie, "Saving Private Ryan" that didn't win Best Picture, which it should have, over that terrible love movie, again, that nobody saw. 11. Why couldn't Spielberg use any other race besides Puerto Rican? That was a racist decision on WOKE Spielberg. High class acting is art, that a great actor could pull it off. Spielberg now denies race to play any role unless they are the same race of the character portrayed? This is a slam in the face of all actors. Example, he could have used actors from any South American country as long as they looked Puerto Rican. Come on man! Spielberg trying to be WOKE is a racist to all other promising actors. 13. What was this freak dark character tranny character that used to be a tom boy girl in the Robert Wise motive? We could see in the Robert Wise movie that this was a tom boy girl. However in this movie, we don't know who this scary creature from hell was in Spielberg's version. Spielberg was again trying to be WOKE by picking a tranny freak character from this years 2021 to by making the LGBTQ people happy. That demonic freak character was a bust.
U know I love u lee but hard pass was my dad's favorite film r.i.p. not gonna watch this remake ... u know in the 80s we wanted to make things, now we just remake things
Great review, I look at a few things differently, I don't think America is as divided and racism isn't as bad as some people make it out to be especially compared to 60 years ago. I think people like Jussie faking hate crimes or Hollywood in general have the own agendas. I think we should celebrate America being the least racist country which is why so many people come here every year, interracial couples are the highest it has ever been, People of all colors living in the same neighborhood, working together, growing up as friends and going to the same church.
@@robertr798 Not really, Certain people from all backgrounds in every country will have hateful people but It's not a big issue in America and anyone can make it here.

@@Godzillafan1980 I'm with you, I'll take something super average like The Lost World and put it above most blockbusters released in the 2010's/2020's so far.
New West Side Story:
1. Good idea to have Rita Marino inserted into the Steven Spielberg script of *West Side Story*
(yes again)

It all started with a rash.
U know I love u lee but hard pass was my dad's favorite film r.i.p. not gonna watch this remake ... u know in the 80s we wanted to make things, now we just remake things
Ha ha I can’t argue on the remake craze. But on the flipside, when there is original contact, no one goes to see it.
@@DrumdumsOfficial I agree there I loved the last duel or last night in soho yet not a comic book films so they fail at the box office
It’s not a remake of the film, it’s a new adaptation of the original stage musical. A semantic difference, but a big one.
I am in a nightmare right now! Musicals are dog 💩 this review isn't real! 😵
Get some culture Neil. It's good for you.
@@DrumdumsOfficial Nah! Keep it! 😏
Sorry, Lee. I will never watch this. I hate musicals with a passion.
Yeah, musicals aren’t for everyone but the story’s that been amazing. I just find them to be a lot of fun.
It's trash!
Can you break that down for me?
Great review, I look at a few things differently, I don't think America is as divided and racism isn't as bad as some people make it out to be especially compared to 60 years ago. I think people like Jussie faking hate crimes or Hollywood in general have the own agendas. I think we should celebrate America being the least racist country which is why so many people come here every year, interracial couples are the highest it has ever been, People of all colors living in the same neighborhood, working together, growing up as friends and going to the same church.
It’s not as racist as it used to be, certainly not as overtly, but we’ve got a long way to go.
@@robertr798 Not really, Certain people from all backgrounds in every country will have hateful people but It's not a big issue in America and anyone can make it here.
