This is a love song based on the legend called La Llorona. La Llorona is a legend about a tragic love that ended with death, tragedy and a haunting. So as many things in Latin America history becomes legend, legend becomes myth and there you have a love song based on a haunting.

there's a little misunderstanding with this song. LA LLORONA (weeping lady) is a popular legend about the ghost of a woman that drowned her children
...but the song is not about that Llorona, but a story about a couple from Oaxaca (center Mexico) separated by the Revolution war:
Before the man went to war, the woman was crying because she may will not see her man again. He took his woman in his arms and wiped her tears, calling her "llorona". He promise her to return in life or death.
the man did not returned, but a friend of his told her wife that he died due to enemy fire, and prior to his death the spouse asked that friend to tell her how he was sorry not to return, and to pass her a letter with his thoughts. That letter is supposed to be the lyrics of the song
Is a regional legend, and it might be prior to that date (maybe even prehispanic), but the main theme is the same: a letter from a man to his spouse in time of war

*LA LLORONA* is an old song passed down. It's a haunting song about a love lost.
    - *ANGELA AGUILAR* (19) Mexican American, she may be young but she comes from a Mexican Music Dynasty. Her grandparents (father's parents - Antonio Aguilar & Flor Sylvestre) were singers, actors. Her father (4X Grammy winner Pepe Aguilar) is a mariachi legend, her uncle sings, her brother (Leonardo Aguilar), cousin (Majo Aguilar) and her are all recording artists. At 3 years old she was enrolled in an Opera Conservatory, at 8 years old she recorded her first album. Her songs are not only Mariachi.
    - *NATALIA LaFOURCADE* (39) is a Mexican singer, she is incredible, she has a more Indie sound in her recordings.
    - *AIDA CUEVAS* (59) is a LEGEND...her career rivals the career of Vicente Fernandez and is as a legend as him. Mexican actress and singer.
    *RECOMMEND:*
    - *Natalia Lafourcade* - *"Hasta La Raiz"*
    - *Aida Cuevas* X Mariachi 2000 - *"El Pastor"*
    - *Angela Aguilar* X Pepe Aguilar (father) *"Tu Sangre En Mi Cuerpo"*

The story of this song was described in some other comments. “La Llorona” song comes from the Istmo de Tehuantepec (some place of Oaxaca). In the past Andres Henestrosa, a mexican writer, made a compilation of all the verses of this song (more than 1 hundred), because the song was added many times. The original song is in zapoteca language, and is beautiful, with the sound of the words in this original native language. Great reaction my friend, greetings

Pronunciation Aguilar (Ah gee lar), Llorona (Yo ro na). La Llorona (The Weeping Woman) This is an old song from around 1941, there is no known composer. There are tons of versions of this song sung by many artists. The story of the weeping lady is a tragic story about a woman that drowned her children in a jealous rage after finding out her husband cheated on her. It is said that she roams bodies of water mourning her children.
