I was stationed at Fleet Sonar School from Nov 1972- mid Sept 1973. About a week I wanted a coconut for a souvenir. @ 19:51 shows where the old main gate guard shackto Key West NOB was and the street used to be lined with coconut palms so after I showed the Marine guard I pedaled just inside and climbed a palm and shook one loose. The Marine yelled at me asking "what the hell are you doing"? I yelled back to him that I just wanted a souvenir. I still have that coconut, completely dried out now...... 51 years ago! While I was stationed there all I had for transportation was a 10 speed bike I bought 2 weeks after I got there. During my free time I just pedaled my bike meandering the little side streets and I've pedaled through the main gate countless times. The old barracks and sonar school buildings are still there and still off limits to us civilians. Sonar school was closed down in 1974. The waterfront by CGC Ingham is where the Navy had piers for diesel submarines. Ingham engaged and sank a German u boat in WW2 and was the last active warship in the US fleet with a U-Boat kill. Looks like the damn cruise ships took over the waterfront.
Thank-you! 😘
Thanks Kim and Gabe!
I missed the ride again. Shucks.
