Hi, I can tell he is very skilled and we do things a bit differently in Canada. He should he using a 1/2" trowel instead of a 1/4" trowel. When he lifted up the tile at 7:19 there is almost no cement on the back of the tile. He should also be using his palms to push the tile firmly into the cement instead of the handle of the hammer. I know every country has their own method of doing things but this method will make a stronger tile installation since there will be more cement holding the tile to the wall. At least 90% cement coverage is required on all tile installations where I am from. I know the finished product will look excellent since I have seen many tile jobs in Taiwan. The quality of the tile work that I have seen in Taiwan is excellent but I can tell many installations are hollow since there is not enough cement being used. The video at 8:00 is good but every single tile should have that much cement for a strong installation.
I agree that on a bad wall is difficult to fit tiles, but there are few things he does wrong. One puts adhesive on the wall as fast as one can so the spread adhesive does not have enough time for the top layer to get dry. In case one cant spread the adhesive fast, one does only a small area. Another thing, floor & wall, both, the tiles have to be back-buttered with adhesive. NO EMPTY TILE TO BE LEFT.
Thanks for your comment. We are tiling on a brick wall which unlike a cement board that has a smooth and already flat surface means installing tiles is a piece of cake. But with a brick wall the surface is not smooth but rough and uneven. Therefore, each tile will have a different background and you have to apply adhesive accordingly. So not every piece must be back buttered the same or you will not achieve both a horizontal and vertical surface. Hopefully, you will understand what we mean. Thank you.
Hi, lovely to have your reply :). I totally understand what you mean, just not sure you understood what I meant. I know exactly what is to be working on uneven surface, believe me :). Just not entirely happy with what I saw, as in my book empty tile is not a well fitted tile. Also, when you take your time spreading adhesive on a biggish area, the adhesive looses some of its glueness and the top layer is dry, so its a must to have a tile back-buttered. The leveling system is great though, isnt it? I have a tip for using this system. Well, actually I have few, but one very good one is that we use min C2 class adhesive, and we mix it with a tiny bit more water than usual, in order to be more sticky, and spread on the surface /if very uneven we use 15-20 mm trowel/ and back-butter the tile. Try this, you may find it helpful. Thanks
+Margarita Kotsev Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. We always enjoy the valuable feedback of the experience of others in this industry. There is often a difference of opinion between cement renderers in connection with the back buttering of tiles issue. We would like to share our views and experiences about our thoughts on back buttering. First, we use back buttering to fill in the uneven surfaces on walls, so in this video for example, we are using back buttering on some tiles but not on others, depending on smoothness of walls. Second, the majority of high rise buildings here are all using the same method as we do. If tiles on a tall building fall down, this can cause problems. However this has not been the result with tile installations on high rise buildings on which we have installed tiles. Tile installers must ensure every piece of tile is securely installed on these high rise, outside wall buildings since these tiles must withstand the exposure to outside elements such as strong winds, sunshine and rain. And sincerely to say, not every single tile is installed with back buttering, only those specifically requiring it. So yes, back buttering is just playing a "part" in the whole role of tile installation. Not important or necessary for areas on a surface which is not smooth. In terms of cement board, (which we know is smooth and slippery unlike a brick wall which is rough in its surface texture) it is necessary to back butter every single tile or else you will certainly have the problem of tiles falling down. By the way, we also add another ingredient into our adhesive which we call, "seaweed powder" which acts to delay the drying out of the mixture too quickly. Finally, whether back buttering is necessary or not, depends on the texture of a surface. Thank you once again for the interaction and for sharing your views and experience with us.
Dude.... You make it look damn easy.. But I guess I am jumping steps like not perfiling all the gaps between the clay bricks.. I'm just doing it in one hit... So I think I'm defs going to prefil and surface prep to make it so much less fiddly..
Since there is a "bad wall" and a large tile, why not apply some of the cement to the tile itself at first and then use a rubber hammer to even it out instead of just applying cement on the wall, knock to find if it has hollows, take it out .....
What about lipage? Did you not use any type of leveling system? I am very tidious about my tiles, and cannot stand for one tile to stick out further from the other.
Looks nice but done incorrectly. He didn’t collapse his mortar ridges so the tiles are not fully supported. You can see when he removed the couple tiles how little the mortar was on the tiles.
He was trying not to show that he had zero bond to the thinset, not only was the thinset already dry, but he didn’t even skim or back butter one tile. Every tile is just holding on by a thread. Literally everything he is doing is pretty much what you don’t do
No back buttering??, you can see the results when he removes the two pieces of tile with 10% bond, Btw, it gives me anxiety the way you spread the thin set. Wasting too much time over doing it!, also trowel lines should be upwards opposite on how tile runs
Dosnt matter which way the adesive runs the spacers hold it all in place until the adesive goes hard ! I don’t like how he knocks them with the opposite end of the hammer , could use a rubber mallet or back butter the tiles if wall is in even then string your level on them !
I am a professional with 20 years of experience and from what I see that adesivo is not the correct one nor the form of installation is the correct one uses a rubber maso to hit the pieces
😃😃😃😃 master aun le falta chispa para instalar cerámica, porque no utiliza un martillo de goma para dar un buen golpe.porque no cortar las piezas antes de extender el pegante Saludos desde Colombia. .
What's funny is all you rookie tile setters with few years experience have no idea what your even watching. You would benefit to go and work for guys like this and learn a few old school methods. You clown on something you have no clue about.
Jason Morgan I can see what your saying I mean if this is a block wall he should "considering the wall should be plumb being block" but do you stick right to the wall in any situation with a large format tile? Fuck no mabey 2x4 subway after a lot of wall prep but c'mon dude you know he's wasting so much time it iggggggnannnntt
waste work....ok after tiling...the next day.... if the plumber can start drilling then the tiles will lose the grip of the wall....the correct tiling right thing is....first of all he should level the wall....then adesive is also apply the tile....thats the standard work
I Like your style from dress to your tiles job
Tile installation on brick walls is not a easy job. So well done.
luw worker - I realize the title says over brick, but I don’t see brick.

Ken C he used that stick to hear the air bubble then fill it
I think the cement mixing is very important on this part otherwise the tiles will drop down.

Marble flooring Jitendra sharma hii
You should use a larger notched trowel for tiles that size especially if the wall isn't perfectly flat or plumb
Bit late for that now

For tiling an uneven wall always backbutter the tile it is easy to set.

Looks nice but done incorrectly. He didn’t collapse his mortar ridges so the tiles are not fully supported. You can see when he removed the couple tiles how little the mortar was on the tiles.
OK well u use a level on the wall and use bonding compound on the area's that aren't level to bring the wall out level
He was trying not to show that he had zero bond to the thinset, not only was the thinset already dry, but he didn’t even skim or back butter one tile. Every tile is just holding on by a thread. Literally everything he is doing is pretty much what you don’t do
7:16 so sad seeing that there isn’t any coverage behind those tiles!! Thank god for grout its the only thing holding them
he probably screwed that up too lol
very nice video

Well that's totally wrong becouse serateing that way in adhiseve is to help stop the tile slide down the wall and create the best possible grip
Dosnt matter which way the adesive runs the spacers hold it all in place until the adesive goes hard ! I don’t like how he knocks them with the opposite end of the hammer , could use a rubber mallet or back butter the tiles if wall is in even then string your level on them !
Good information.
