I’m a fairly new stylist. I am so glad there are people like you that keep it real. Also I’m glad to know this type of service doesn’t need to be precise. This made my life as a new stylist so much easier. I prefer having the foils folded behind.
I freaking love you! You keep it real AF and admitting that we get better from failures spoke to me on a soul level. When I first started doing hair it felt as if I had to shame myself for any and ALL mistakes because of how experienced stylists made me feel. I naturally went against that and now 7 years in I love being the same way with newer & younger stylists, being entirely transparent and showing them all of my mistakes and vulnerability. It’s healing and 100% necessary for growth! Thank you♥️
Dawn I love how you explain exactly what you’re doing and why! I love how everything does not have to be perfectly precise! And I love how you admit that you make mistakes and learn from them just like the rest of us! I’ve been doing this for 34 years and sometimes as an older stylist I find it harder to learn new things because I have old things beat into my brain. You make it easy thank you!! And definitely you make it not as scary!!😘
I got how did I not see this channel until now?! I watch hairstylist videos all the time and thought I’d found some of the best clearly I’ve been missing out! Binging your channel now! 💕
aweeee. that is the best compliment EVER angeline!!! I'm pretty new to RUclips, so thank you for being here and commenting, that. means so much. Let's change the world together? you in?
Great video. I am in very early stages of learning. For the sections that don't have foil, how do you ensure that the bleach doesn't speck the surrounding hair and make orange spots? Also, how do you figure out timing on the foiled and non foiled areas since the foiled areas lighten faster? Thank you !
I fold my foil inward. It’s easier to put the tail of the comb right back up there to straighten out the foil if needed. Glad I found this video. I’m starting to get into color after specializing in cut and style for the last few years. I was looking for a foiliage video that has a technique I can understand and follow. Thank you
Not a stylist, but you, Ellebangs, Jessi, and Brad Mondo have trained me to be quite efficient, so I've been cutting and highlighting my own and my family/friends hair ever since Covid shutdowns. I have my little foil fold on the inside, but I only do it that way to use as a guide. When highlighting, I apply lightener only up to that little fold. It is just insurance that I don't get any bleed spots if the lightener swells. :)
LOVE THE COMMENTARY!!! 12 yr Stylist from Oklahoma and love continuing education so I love that you are sharing your techniques on here! I purchased the yearly subscription of BTC & this technique is almost the same as the blonde chronicles & it’s been so helpful! ((I fold my foils inward. Hey Amanda, Im so stoked that youre soaking up so much knowledge while still a student. Good for yiu. Im so happy you are here and subscribed. It's nice to meet you!
love your work, just found you. stylist for 36 years now. i fold foils toward me, only because i was taught back in the day that the fold toward helped stop the bleach from traveling too far up . but who knows what is right or wrong, I do it cause for me it is easier
You are AMAZING. I am about to graduate cosmetology school, and I’m so nervous trying to remember all the little rules and tid bits of information! But you have inspired me not to be afraid, and to really hone in on the artistic aspect of doing hair. Thank you! Subscribed!
I was taught to fold just like you and it makes since because if foil was to slip we can still get in and push it up with the fold back and no bleach on back. I graduated in 1982. So I feel is a better technique folding it back. You are doing amazing.😊
I have my sister coming in on Saturday and I wanted to try a new technique on her and this is perfect! I’m so excited to try this, thanks so much for the video!!
I so appreciate this video and all of your tips!! I keep getting down on myself because I'm just starting to build a clientele and I'm happy to hear you've made the same mistakes I'm making now haha
I was also taught to fold my foil over my like you do... but a retired stylist showed me to do it differently. Folding the foil over top the comb makes it easier to move the foil if needed. It helps me if they slip.
You're absolutely right, when it comes to haircolors and techniques nowadays it's more like a piece of art 🎨so there's no wrong or right you do what the client likes and looks right for her or him.
I'm getting so many questions about the toners, and I totally didnt write it down, but from what I can remember I used a 8v and 8n on her to darken it a touch the daylight was def not on my side for her after pics. Is that helpful?
Trained with pre cut foils and comb and bending back, BUT when I started the place didn't have a foil cutter sooo I fold the hair over the foil and come so the flap is inward. I'm too slow if I stop to put it on the comb
Love this. Thank you. I have been doing hair for 30 yrs and these new hip trends i feel i out of the loop but i still try different techniques to stay relevant but sometimes not as confident. This is great. And i foil fold outward like you 😉
Question, when doing sections with teasing why aren’t you doing a perfect blend? Why is the blending at the top of the section more piecey? I have a major project on Monday and she wants an old color more blended
Hey Heather, I know Im late to reply, Im not sure I understand what you are asking, When I tease it creates the blend for me with the teasing ( when it combs out it will be blended due to the teasing) I hope that is helpful!
When you said “the reason why I know how to do this is because Is from all the failures” FELT THAT GIRL. I love this technique and also the commentary! Lol! I’ve always wanted to try this type of angled sectioning through the top, but was always just a little afraid, so thank you for that! Regarding my fold, inward or outward? I’ve done it both ways and I really don’t see much of a difference, but inward is my go to because I feel like they slip less.

Yes!! I just started using this technique however instead of open air processing the balayage pieces left out of the foils I just pop some extra foils in lower on the midshaft since I do work on a lot of thick Asian hair

great question!!! I try to go the same level at their natural hair knowing that the toner will be translucent ( I use shades EQ) so it will appear a touch lighter. I dont want to go darker than their natural to avoid staining. Does that make sense?
Great work and love the narrative along with your passion. However I wish you’d have mentioned which brand and level of bleach used same with brand of toner and toning shade(s). Unless you did and I missed it which I don’t believe I did hear any mention of that info then of course my apologies. But yes that would have been a huge plus. Beautiful "speedy" technique! Checks all the boxes!! I'm often finding myself putting in too many foils, even for a partial. Like "if I don't put enough in, they won't notice any change!" Happened just yesterday. Partial, (hairline, front, top and 3"down in back) but that was ATLEAST 40 foils!!! 🙄 Definitely want to try this soon!!
I foil like you! Using the crease framar foils already have. I lock every foil tho! This is the first video I’ve seen of yours but I’m going to watch them all!
Hy can you help me with one question? My hairdressers make me she said balayage, but make a full head with foils and didn't make any many pieces, didn't left almost any dark hair, use a hairdryer to separate the hair pieces Wen a streach my hair look like its all blond full hair. Didn't my hairdresser make me highlightes and call it balayage? I'm so 😠🗯😡
I have fold mine towards me inside the foil because it kind of gives me an idea of where I should start blending so it’s not a straight line and the boxes made both ways so it’s not premade that way if you stand on the other side of the box it’s inside so 😂
LOVED your placement and technique, I’m going to try and not stress doing perfect sections lol Do you happen to have a foiliage video for clients with grey hair?
I love the commentary😃 I was trained to fold inside, but I noticed a lot of people were folding outward and to tighten the foil, it would have to be outward. Once when I was folding inward, I was using a red foil in a generic off brand and the bleach colored that area of my clients hair pink! After that, I started to always fold outward. I never wanted that to happen again!
whoa. the foil turned their hair pink! yikes, that only has to happen once to totally freak ya out, huh. Thanks for sharing that. We gotta share those things more often dont we.
@@NeboAllen I am curious if you remember the brand that was!? 🤔 I only use framar foils now because I love the thickness, and grip they have! 😍 But I had bought a beautiful purple & teal ombre colored foil, and they were by color track! As I was foiling toward me, applying highlights.. it put the purple and teal color in her hair!!! 😱🤦♀️ It was horrible! I realized the bleach was melting the color off because they aren't actually printed that color, they had this film on top the foil that was the color. Never again!!!! 🙅🏼♀️ I had to replace every foil and reapply lightener to the root area that the dye from the foils bled onto! It was a longggg day. But I am so so thankful I caught it before I had removed all the foils at the sink! I always double, triple check foils while processing! Rather be safe than sorry. & work smarter not harder! 😎💁♀️
@@mommyof3girlsWhat a nightmare, yes I know!!! Sorry I don't remember what brand, it wasn't a familiar line (it was a roll in a black box). At the time I bought a lot of them (eBay) I thought for the price, it was a great deal. I did use them up, but never foiled toward me again. Now I don't care what foil I use, I always foil out, even with the plain silver ones (which I have only been using lately- gotta keep the costs down!).
Ooh i love this question!!! I actually open air balayage those because i can control how muxh lift they get. Have you watched any of my open air balayage videos yet?
Great Technique! does it make sense to use 20 % vol for the foilyage and then go in with 30 % vol for the tip outs, and put them in foils too? ( working on a level 4 to 5 brunette )

Sobrang ganda pak na pak! Amazing hands!
I have fold mine towards me inside the foil because it kind of gives me an idea of where I should start blending so it’s not a straight line and the boxes made both ways so it’s not premade that way if you stand on the other side of the box it’s inside so 😂
haha omg I didnt know that about the box, thats so cool! made for everyone :-)
LOVED your placement and technique, I’m going to try and not stress doing perfect sections lol
Do you happen to have a foiliage video for clients with grey hair?
This is video is so educational!!! For me as self-thought hairstylist THIS is the video what i needed in connection with foilyage ‹3
awe thank you so much for such words of encouragement!!!
Love it thanks for the tips 🤠
I love the commentary😃 I was trained to fold inside, but I noticed a lot of people were folding outward and to tighten the foil, it would have to be outward. Once when I was folding inward, I was using a red foil in a generic off brand and the bleach colored that area of my clients hair pink! After that, I started to always fold outward. I never wanted that to happen again!
whoa. the foil turned their hair pink! yikes, that only has to happen once to totally freak ya out, huh. Thanks for sharing that. We gotta share those things more often dont we.
@@dawnbradley yep, I don't care what brand I use, I will always fold out if it has color on it! 🙃
@@NeboAllen I am curious if you remember the brand that was!? 🤔
I only use framar foils now because I love the thickness, and grip they have! 😍 But I had bought a beautiful purple & teal ombre colored foil, and they were by color track! As I was foiling toward me, applying highlights.. it put the purple and teal color in her hair!!! 😱🤦♀️
It was horrible!
What volume did you use for her foils and what volume for her in-between balayage?
Absolutely beautiful.. what toner did you use?
What # toners are you using
I absolutely love you! Yes, we are artist. Thanks for being you! Beautiful! What rules? 🙌🏻👑♥️😘😉
I fold back and don’t use a comb to hold
It, we were trained to fold and place our selfs and now I couldn’t use a comb to place it if I tried
haha I love that!
You are a fantastic teacher!! Scared shitless almost graduated cosmetologist here.. 🙋🏻♀️ these tutorials have been a lifesaver!!!
how do you deal with people who have a lot of baby hairs around the front hairline...if you highlight them, they look like breakage
Ooh i love this question!!! I actually open air balayage those because i can control how muxh lift they get. Have you watched any of my open air balayage videos yet?
Love this technique! Did you use the same volume developer throughout your application?
@@tintedsalon3491 I used 10 and 20 vol
Thanks for watching! Think you’ll try this?
Yes for sure I will use this technique..similar to what I do now. and I LOVE your commentary. I too fold my foil flap back 😊
Gorgeous! Definitely trying this! Thank you 😊
What toners did you use / levels?
@@yolandayodimoses6474 awe yay! twinsies!!!
@@paulasmith9230 youre so welcome!
Excellent video ☺️ I fold back and I have tried forward it locks it in place and stops bleeds more I think folding back x nice results ty
I agree ☺️💗💗
Great Technique! does it make sense to use 20 % vol for the foilyage and then go in with 30 % vol for the tip outs, and put them in foils too? ( working on a level 4 to 5 brunette )
that could totally work! I'm all for playing with different ways to do things, always taking into consideration the health of the hair
I like your commentary
Pretty Awesome! What toners were used, please
Amazing
You are so easy to understand and explaining things!!
Keep up the good work !!
