Leon, any particular reason why are you using always your CAB IR in every preset? Why aren't you trying any of the stock cabs? I am just wondering if I should go as a beginner user of FM9 Turbo straight with your IR which sounds awesome or I should try tons of stock ones...
@@LeonTodd I think there’s a lot to be said for a bridge humbucker and a P90 neck as demonstrated here. I think it’s pretty hard to fault Les Paul or similar bridge tone, but I’ve felt that single coil or P90 tones on a neck pick up particularly in a solid body guitar like this just have a bit more resonance and precision to them
About 6 years ago I purchased a G&L Fallout. This guitar has the Humbucker/P90 bridge/neck combo. It is my favorite guitar because of all the great sounds available from each very different pickup. Extremely versatile. The newer Fallout’s have a coil split humbucker for even more versatility.

Interesting Stetsbar there, Mr. Todd! They are one of the less common but interesting bridge designs I see (at least here in the States). Makes me think of the well-regarded but newer Sophia design. I'm sure the tone wood guys are probably (over)reacting like they do when they see Kahlers on 80s LPs. :) Definitely a unique guitar. I like the bridge humbucker especially.

Reverend makes their Double Agent guitars (and maybe another model) with a Humbucker bridge and a P90 neck. Great guitars all around and the pickup combo is killer.
I dig the bridge humbucker for sure. P90s and Fillertrons are the kind of pickups I would love in a dedicated guitar for them (maybe Brian Setzer rockabilly?), but aren't really optimal for what I do. I've heard P90s in high gain situations and have found them fine, as they can notch out problematic frequencies that muddy the tone. That said, I also consider P90s almost like a phase/flange/chorus effect in that they remove certain frequencies, usually in the lows, and introduce a kind of sizzle or hiss that is very unique. They can also weaken the tone if dialed in incorrectly, almost sounding out of phase. I haven't done a back to back on a genuine P90 vs. humbucker P90. Most builders tell me there is no difference. That said, I hear the same thing from noiseless single coil builders using the stacked (as opposed to the newer side by side) design, and I always prefer the stacked coils split/tapped. More noise but truer sound to a genuine single coil to my ear, whereas the noiseless just sound like mini humbuckers at times (which is essentially what the stacked designs are). Inspired by the P90 and Fillertron, I've asked pickup builders if they can do a Fender CuNiFe type design in a humbucker, but they tell me no, they need the extra width for the design to work as intended. :( There's also all the cork sniffing among purists about tonal differences between 70s wide range pickups and modern recreations now that CuNiFe is a rather hard to find material and substitutions are used. *Would love to see you do a wide range video with your thoughts, Mr. Todd.*
There is a difference between full size and humbucker size P90's. You simply can't fit a full size P90 in that little box. So there's a compromise. That doesn't mean worse, just different, and in this situation I think the humbucker size is more useful.
If you all don't mind, I want to add something I just thought of to be fair to the P-90 design for high gain applications. Geordie Walker, late guitarist of the 80s British industrial/punk/metal band Killing Joke, used a gold 1950s Gibson ES-295 hollow body guitar with P-90s for their sound. To my knowledge, it was never modified from factory spec, and so it used true 1950s P-90s. Killing Joke was an inspiration for many bands including Metallica, and KJ's guitar tone in the 90s-00s (1994's "Pandemonium" comes to mind) was every bit as heavy as other bands of the time using modern guitars. The 1950s P-90s had no problem doing a chugging, saturated, high gain sound. For reference, KJ used DGCFAD tuning and Walker used 058-062 strings on bottom, which would correspond to 11-12 gauge Ernie Ball sets. For comparison, Elvis Presley's guitarist Scotty Moore used the same guitar. Who would have thought it could make a modern heavy guitar sound 40+ years after it was designed? So, my post was not meant to imply that P-90s and Filtertrons are not good pickups. I just associate them with a 1950s Gretsch sort of rockabilly sound. I would prefer a dedicated guitar for those pickup designs since they are not humbucker sized. If I played those styles more, I would own those types of guitars. Likewise, I would have not used semi-hollows or hollow bodied guitars for heavy tones until recently because I worried about feedback and too much resonance (essentially like an acoustic bass guitar distorted). But Leon is changing my mind on semis. Also, Ola Englund has done videos on modern high gain guitarists using high output single coils in the bridge position. They work, but they create a different sound. I probably would not use them, but this is just my preference. The main thing is there are more options now than the standard high output humbucker for guitarists wanting to try something different. To be fair and criticize more modern designs, I can also say I would not use all modern high gain humbucker designs even though I play metal. Seymour Duncan's classic super hot passive Invader model was popular from the 1970s-90s for many metal guitarists, but I always found it dark and bass heavy. I like brighter, more articulate, more balanced, moderately high output pickups instead, similar to how Mr. Glyn's Cloud 9 sounds here (Leon's Stetsbar bridge might also add some brightness and twang). I prefer using a slightly boosted high gain amp to make up any output/distortion difference from lower wound pickups. So, I did not mean to be unfair to Mr. Glyn's excellent pickups, and I thank him for his comment. I learned there is a difference between true P-90s and humbucker P-90s. I meant to only indicate my preference in my experience in order to stimulate conversation about P-90s. If only we could try out every pickup ever made in every possible guitar and pick what we like! :) As usual, your mileage (or in Leon's case, kilometer-age?) may vary, and there is no right or wrong, only personal preference. I thank Mr. Glyn and Leon for their work and content, and will get around to trying out Mr. Glyn's pickups when I can. It is always great to become aware of a new builder. Correct, it's a Stetsbar. Long story short but this guitar had an aftermarket Kahler poorly installed when i got it and the hole for the Kahler has been filled. Stetsbar provides a nice cover ;)
@@LeonTodd I have a 335 that I got for a steal at a guitar show a long time ago that had a Kahler on it. Just filled it in with a block of maple and refinished. You can tell it was there, but only if you look close - and that guitar is killer (Cliff tried to get it off me a few times).
For a Les Paul, the set definitely proved to make it more versatile. One of the main reasons I've never been crazy about 90% of LP's is the majority you hear sound the same. Once in a while, I hear one with more thoughtful pickup selections and they're dazzling. Being an engineer, I really just focus on active circuits and filtering schemes. I can filter humbuckers to sound like single coils and vice versa. I can also do it without the end result sounding like active pickups but that's actually the easiest part. *Never step outside Class-A operation and you change absolutely nothing about the pickup tonally but with much greater output voltage.*

@@AdamGuitar87 use whatever you like the sound of. That IR is a capture of my real Marshall cabinet that I've used a lot so it makes sense to me.

I use the same combination for my gigging guitar (that V you see at the beginning). It means I can do a 3 hr covers gig without swapping guitar.

Class A is fantastic for sound quality and horrific for efficiency. Hence why it's rarely used in industry
