ultra is a sublime album, ..You mentioned it..they survived Alan's departure and the addictions. it's DEPECHE FUCKING MODE...the greatest band out there.
Dave looks messed up in this video, but he was actually clean and sober by this point. The director (Anton Corbijn) was just imagining some of Dave's low points for the video (overdoses and suicide attempts). It's also important to remember that Martin Gore wrote the song, so it's not about Dave's struggle specifically... Martin has commented before that he doesn't write for Dave, saying something to the affect of "I have my own problems too, you know!" Dave's drug of choice was heroin, but Martin's was alcohol. Luckily they both survived and are enjoying sobriety.
You're absolutely right. It is also told in the book 'Stripped'. But obviously Anton was focused primarily on the frontman, and Dave was "happy" about that on some level. He still has this problem: 1.The latest 'Soulsavers' album - 'Imposter' for a reason. 2. Dave (I think) could also be an excellent actor, and that's why he was able to make Martin's lyrics his own very nicely. Perfect example 'ConDeMnation' (btw your profile name is cool😉) So that was a perpetual problem between the two of them. That's when the conciliatory friend was Fletch🕊(R.I.P.) But they know exactly that neither of them would be anywhere without the other, so, thank goodness! DEVOTEE💜FOREVER✌
Hearing BOAG on the radio in 1997 when I was 15 grabbed my attention in a way that nothing had ever done before. I remember running to my stereo and trying to start a cassette tape recording to capture as much as I could (those were the days!). The lyrics are gripping, especially at 15 it was like someone understood me emotionally. I *had* to know who this band was. I bought ULTRA but I couldn't quite get into it at that time beyond BOAG and It's No Good. Flash forward a year, and the same exact thing happened again, this time with Only When I Lose Myself... heard it on the radio and was astonished that it was, yet again, this "80's band" I had heard of but knew nothing about. Ended up buying Singles 86>98 and have been a massive fan ever since. OWILM would be another great reaction song for Ty, it's yet again a complete curveball in their career progression... a dreamy, beautiful ballad with overtones of darkness and obsession.
Depeche Mode Fans (I am one as well) are just awesome kinda fans with incredible stories and memories of how DM has influenced or had a real impact on them as humans in some way. Wow that was a long sentence. 😎 Thx so much for sharing your memories with us! My story was similar, it only took one song for me to be hooked on this band forever .... 1984 & hearing "People Are People" on a shortwave radio (probably BBC One) in the mountains of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Very wise observations! Ultra was such an amazing album; it doesn't get enough love and a it's timeless storyteller of where they were at that time in their lives.
If Ty likes the dark side of Depeche Mode (as I do, I adore them) I think he should listen to ‘Black Celebration’, ‘Fly on the windscreen’ and ‘Rumors’.
Weird as it sounds, I didn’t start getting into Depeche Mode’s music until August of 2022, when I heard the album “Violator” in full for the first time. But when I did, my interest in them literally took off like a rocket into outer space, and I went out to listen to as many of their albums as possible (“Ultra” included). And I was blown away by almost every single one of them. Only “Spirit” didn’t wow me off the bat, but it still had a couple of listenable songs, too. I liked your observations on this terrific song, by the way.
Barrel of a Gun is so different from the rest of Ultra but it kind of fits. As Matt Bauer says, it's kind of like a hangover album. Maybe for me more like coming off a high with an oppressive, dark but chilled vibe. I find it comforting and one of, maybe my favourite DM album.
This is an awesome choice this is one of my favorite DM tunes. Awesome analogy of the time of this ere. I Feel You is another song that is great as for one of DM's hard hitting songs
During the making of the Ultra album Martin was contemplating weather to make it a solo also due to that Dave was in such bad shape with his situation hw has going threw. the is a Martin Gore version of this song on you tube it is not that bad. I Feel You is another hard hitting song that Ty might enjoy
To this day I have no idea, how good of a guitar player Gore really is. I would have loved to see DM give some kind of an unplugged performance at some point. I´m sure, we´d learn alot about their songs, if we had a chance to hear them stripped down to acoustic instruments.
I'll give you your idea. "Stripped down to the bone" Anyway, they did an unplugged disc in the 'Playing The Angel' era but there are some have a bit of electronics gadgets in it, but Martin said some synth sounds are unmissable. Dave was able to do it on the 'Paper Monsters' Tour one night. But here's a link ruclips.net/video/sshD2ydg6-Q/видео.html (22:50 'Enjoy The Silence' is brilliant!) I hope you enjoy! 😎✌
@@alexnagy2044 Thanks much for the link. From briefly brushing over the video I had the impression it´s quite piano heavy, but I´m gonna give it a closer look later. Perhaps I´ll find out more about Martin The Picker ;) Cheers.
The kid (and I mean it as a term of endearment) is on point😀wow...and yes the synth god Alan Wilder had left but the producer Tim Simenon was a huge fan of his and kept his dark sound ...loooooved yalls reaction! Oh theres a lot of fun facts behind the making of this video...how the made Dave suffer ...
I think the word you're looking for Ty is dissonance. It's having some sounds that are slightly off tune, that are a bit grating. It has that uneasy feeling, but it's also enjoyable on a certain level. At least for me. You hear it in singing as well, particularly those who came out of the punk/post-punk/grunge eras like PJ Harvey and Siouxsie Sioux
Tim Simenon was the producer for the album. The big change sonically was no Alan Wilder. Tim Simenon was picked as the producer by being on Mute Records. Tim Simenon records under the name Bomb The Bass. Check out the song Beat Dis The main sound difference was that Depeche Mode used a lot more synthesizers and less sampling. Alan Wilder was the person that did most of the sampling and manipulating of the samples. The track i liked the best on Ultra is It's No Good. You guys should react to that song.
Would have to disagree with Alan being the pop side..Alan's music is actually darker and he brought the darker side of Depeche..they just rolled with it on this album because that was where their headspace at the time was and the tone of martins songs. But great seeing more depeche reactions.
Can you guys please react to Sammy John's 1975 hit song " Chevy Van" . I know you guys will enjoy listening to and reacting to this big 1975 hit. There are videos of the song on RUclips but I would like to hear you guys opinion on this great song. It's kinda like a hippie love song.

You definitely need to show him Home next! A great Martin sung masterpiece
one of my tops songs of my favorite band ... I was a 17 years old when this album came out. gothic dark electronic rock

First 2 are absolute classics indeed 😎😎
“One Caress” is dark with a really beautiful soundscape.
More Mode Guys ..awesome thank you . Great points Ty . Loading my "Ultra" right now , overdue a listen of that whole awesome album !

Ultra sounds to me like a beautiful hangover.
I like that 😎
Fantastic song, so dark and intense.
Ultra is one of my favourite DM albums. It came out 3 years before I was born
I love hearing that 😎😎 young DM fans, so great to see !

Good review. If you have time, please review "Only When I Lose Myself". That's one of my favourites and the video is also very cool.
I think Ty might like the video to Wrong. It comes out hard AF
Their best song from their best album
I agree!
Wow ......, you go on a trip ... without the pain he felt....... wow
Can you hear some NIN in this song. And marilyn manson.. they both were influenced by this alburm
One of the most rock (and least catchy) pieces of Depeche Mode, reminiscent of the industrial of Nine Inch Nails.
Great song, as always.

One thing I noticed you're wrong about and that's Alan Wilder. He was the sound magician in Depeche mode until his departure, not Martin
