@@AquariumPlantLab Thanks, very helpful. I bought some Water Hyacinth for my big aquarium, and it wasn't doing so good. My gut says it was due to my gourami chewing on the roots, but this is good info to have.
Excellent explanation of the process of melting. This is true of all plants. Your garden plants are the same. You're going to have more roses if you remove the dead seed pods rose flowers create. All plants need pruning: fruit trees, flowering shrubs, perennials. Aquarium plants are no different. All new growth comes at the expense of old growth. I think lots of us probably know this at some level, but when it comes to underwater plants, many people think they are fundamentally different than above ground plants, and they really aren't.
Hi great informative video. What is the livestock you have in the tank. Also with regards to the plants, I tend to float new plants in the aquarium for a week to see if there is root growth, that always helps. To help with plant stress, I also cut majority of the leaves back and cut back the root to stimulate growth before planting. Keep the videos coming, I've just subscribed 👍
One thing I learned about live plants is if they we're planted straight in the substrate you shouldn't move them just let them sit there for their roots to establish because once they we're pulled out the time for them to melt and grow back will reset. For the potted plants that's also the thing to do except you can move them around the tank since they are not directly planted in the substrate.
Really like your videos, very informative. I have asked many people this question but never got an answer. I have hard water, if I add a water softener to the house will this have a drastic effect on future water changes?
Honestly I am not sure. I would suggest doing smaller water changes for awhile to see how the plants/fish react. Monitor the water through testing as you do changes. Often times, conditioners like softeners only last for awhile and need to be continually added, so you might see the water rise in hardness again after added to your tank. Good luck!
I've put 4 vallisnerias in my tank last month. The old already stablished leaves didn't melt but they also stopped growing. And the new leaves always emerge in very Light color, almost transparent. Most of those new leaves end up melting. Root tabs could help me with this? My substrate is pure sand (not fertile). I use liquid fertilizers and have a good lighting also. No CO2 injection.
I would test your water and see what nitrate levels you have in there. I would shoot for 20-30ppm nitrate. Or you could try root tabs (would probably work better TBH). Sounds like a nitrogen deficiency to me.
😏 got ya a subscriber right here. Look in forward to following the jungle Val for sure my Val’s are pretty much at this point of coming back so it will be interesting if it keeps pace with your Val lol.
I’ve had mixed experiences with Val, sometimes it grows like mad other times not so much. I will document this tank as it progresses! Thanks for the sub :)
I just plant swords and after a week when they have some extra roots, cut all the original stems and leaves off and plant the root ball. The leaves grown out of water are algea magnets as well.
How many hours of light does Jungle Val need to be healthy? I switched to a Fluval 3.0 in my 20G and now my Jungle Val are melting away. Previously had a cheapy 35 w full spectrum china led light which worked awesome.
Well that really depends on a number of factors such as co2, ferts, light intensity, etc. Val has a tendency to melt if tank conditions change so I am not surprised you experienced melt with yours. Have they started to bounce back yet? Ultimately as long as you don’t have an algae problem then I wouldn’t worry about the number of hours too much.
In my 10 gallon tank ,leaves are not bright color , should I use co2 setup for complete photosynthesis? Which liquid fertilizer you recmment, easily available in india ?
Hmmmm, I am not sure what would be available in India unfortunately. Maybe look for some Tropica fertilizer? CO2 will always produce the best results, but is definitely not required for all plants. If you can get a CO2 setup though I would say go for it!
I just started my tank and my plants started melting I’m thinking it’s just the tank being new as well as the substrate just being sand and gravel because in my other tank I have aqual soil so this a new problem to me. I have the product Flourish for the plants would any other product help?
Good question. Depends on the plants. If they are water column feeders then I would get an all in one fertilizer with more NPK than flourish has. If they are root feeders then I would definitely get some root tabs. Could also just be that the plants need some time. Good luck!
@@AquariumPlantLab appreciate the response I have undulata as well as a micro sword and a grasslike plant not sure of the name for it but I’ll do more research thanks.
I have a 10 ga tank with Grave in it that I bout with the tank win I bout I have lived plants in it but they keep DiD and put Roots tablet in it win setup and my plants still won't grow and I have the light that I bout from PetSmart so can you help me with that in your next RUclips videos
Make sure you have the correct type of light and fertilizer. With those two things you should get at least some growth. I’ll try to do a planted tank basics video soon! Thanks for the suggestion and good luck with your tank!
I just bought some Amazon swords and it's been in my tank for 3 weeks and they are melting, I burrowed some ferts and douse the tank with liquid ferts and maintain the light in medium shade and with 12 hours light but still they melt. The only thing that doesn't melt are my moss balls.
Hmmmm, make sure you have deep enough substrate for the roots to sink into. Also if your plants don’t have sufficient roots then it will be difficult to get them to stay in place until they grow more roots. You can try wedging plants with a stone or decor.
Phenotypic plasticity is the term for this I believe?
Wow I haven’t heard that term since my undergrad! Completely forgot that one, you are spot on! Thanks for the comment!

What is the roots are dead?
I messed up I pulled and replanted like 10 plants. But now I plan to leave it alone. I put root tabs and I use lighting and aquarium co ops green
Elequently put. Thanks

Why do they become yellow green ?
Probably nutrient deficiency. Do you dose aquarium plant fertilizer? What kind of substrate do you have?
