Marty always great stuff. Fascinated by your picking technique - it appears your pick is pointed pick tip up going against the "grain" of the strings on your "up strums" from Hi E to low E. I have even slowed down RUclips to allowable .25 speed to try and figure it out - no help. This is not a funk only thing I watch it on all your videos and it always fascinates me. Your right hand is so free and glides through the strings as you strum up - HOW DO YOU DO THAT? Ha Ha, I try to emulate with how my pick is held or using different picks and I just seem to get tangled up in the strings on my up strum. Down strum, got it; up strum unwanted noise and string snags! I could use a video on your up strum alone!!! How the heck to you do that Master Marty?
I'm working on that stuff now. I noticed if I use a big bendy pick i can play funk stuff like this better and if I use a sharp harder pick like a jazz iii I can play the fast alternate picking stuff better. As for slow speed picking videos you're gonna want Troy Grady's channel

I could listen to those Parliament-Funkadelic/Sly Stone-esque grooves for hours on end. It's something about the repetition in 70's funk that captivates me. I also love Fela Kuti's music for the same reason.
I absolutely love metal and moshing out and head banging.... but man funk? There is just something so god damn sexy about it! Love it! I wanna play it bass manly but finding a band is impossible!

Am I supposed to mute the e and the a string with my right hand or should I try to be so accurate with my pick that I dont hit them by accident?
Both, depending on what you're doing. If you are at the 7th or 9th fret you may get harmonics on the 5th and 6th string if you dont mute them with more than one finger. Also, it affects how percussive your sound is. People like Nile Rodgers hit less strings, while people like Cory Wong tend to hit all 6 most of the time

The strumming without the syncopation and muting sounded to me a bit like the beginning of AWB's pick up the pieces.

Never heard of it. I've HEARD it alot listening 2 james Brown aka A Bad Mutha...just never came Cross tha chord n playing. Hendrix chord yes.

I think he also hits the strings with right hand rhythmically to get a richer percussive sound, which may be subconscious that he even do not notice, so it's never mentioned
Gong Wenbing yes definitely do this! It really adds a lot. Accent certain strokes wherever the groove needs them

can you do neo soul lesson? but deeper than just the basic number system and the basic Cmaj7-Dm7-Em7-Fmaj7 down the neck. I know all those chords and more, but it would be nice to understand how to do the rhythm, melody, flow of neo soul and now to keep the playing interesting if you are doing basic 2-5-1 over and over. thanks!
