Nicely done Mr Circle. This very much reminds me of the lessons I learned from White Dwarf back in the mid 90’s, and articles from Nigel Stillman (Stillmania). I wonder why exactly Heavy Weapons have been made so cheap this edition. Feels like all of them need to be made more expensive, Volkite culverins and lascannons most of all
I do get a chuckle out of how obviously bad alot of boxsets are that newer people wouldn't realise because of the marketing of 'more minis for less'. Best example is boxsets with named characters, like as a Craftworlds player I already have a Jain Zar so I'm not going to grab the new Boarding Actions kit because even if I want Corsairs and Banshees, I don't win on having a named character that I already have, selling off is annoying, and is quite literally designed to not be kitbashable.
Good video. Bought two patrol boxes, Trajann Valoris, 2 boxes of Wardens and tracked down the Black Library release for Aleya and Valerian for Custodes then I got some nice proxies off Cults 3D for the Telemon and Calladius to give them a shot; should I feel they perform well I'll eventually replace them with the real models from Forgeworld for store tournaments.
It should definitely be encouraging for people to have a test miniature or a few so long as it's a cheap or spare mini. If you are straped for money or low on space then you can get a troop choice for a faction that you like then play kill team. In my experience it perfectly fine to play kill team especially for first time players.
Some good advice here - although I'd say if you're happy with a lot of MKVI bodies, what I did is actually bought multiple AoD boxes, and and split them for profit. This was more lucrative just after launch but still do-able now. You can either keep some free units or use the profits to buy more useful ones - Right now buying AoD for £140 at a 20% off retailer would net you £55-60 profit after postage/fees - just list everything on an 80% off fees weekend on Ebay, there's usually a couple every month. Alternatively you could break even but keep a free contemptor and 20x MK VI marines. Where I'd kinda differ here from the advice is that having a ton of marines is a bit like the whole thing with colour schemes - they're cheap as shit (or free) so if you get those weapon upgrade kits you can kit a few squads out with different weapons and be able to experiment or play different units. I'd agree the lascannon/autocannon/volkite heavy weapons kit is a great shout, but the special weapons kit is alright too. Pick some weapons you want to try out or think are decent for your legion. Then again, split the weapons upgrades you don't need and chuck em on ebay for a few quid, this makes the cost of making heavy and special weapons squads negligible. Another thing is despite what the die-hard grognards say, 40k is still a great source of minis for 30k, so since the vast majority of people getting into 30k right now are coming over from 40k, research what units you already have you could have some fun with while you build your army. Arbiter Ian did a pretty great breakdown of this stuff on his channel. Not sure if Mac has done one too but wouldn't surprise me. Obviously don't go putting Primaris intercessors in your 30k army, but do research what units would fit in 30k. For instance I bought a massive joblot of Blood Angels on ebay for like £45 which included a complete BA tactical squad - if you look at this kit there's actually 5-6 heresy-era armours in there and a ton of fluffy upgrade bits. Sanguinary guard while annoyingly not yet in HH 2.0 are basically a bunch of guys in heresy-era artificer armour. Most people will let you run those guys as dawnbreakers or a command squad. Also remember TOC is well-informed, but also mega-opinionated - that's not to say don't listen to his advice, but also get MULTIPLE opinions from various sources when building your army. For instance Hearesy is a great podcast on here for info on various units, legions, tactics etc. Absolutely research what you actually need before hitting that buy button, but if you love a model and wanna paint it, don't let hard opinions on the matter prevent you from enjoying them.
That's what I did back when I started playing. I bought a box of cultists to see if I enjoyed painting / could actually invest the time. I enjoyed it, so bought a second box of em to practice (this was 6th Ed, cultists were 50 cents a model on ebay lol).
I designed my color scheme based on sections shoulders and chest Purple right shoulder and arm grey body black left shoulder helmet purple with silver face plate I soend alot time when i get a new style tank looking what areas should be color matched what should be a section and then which to do purple which to do black and grey needs be the main color
I would add onto the painting tips, pick 1 thing to put the most effort and time into. So for marines the main armor color. If that 1 thing is done well you can half ass everything else and it'll look nearly as good as someone's marines that they spent a million hours on each marine, especially on table top. For example do the zenithal highlight, contrast to color in, then do a highlight and a wash on the armor. Paint your weapon casings and random other accessories black (don't even bother to highlight or wash it, just get a solid coating), pick a brown for your leather, and so on. You'll finish up way faster and it'll still look great because the majority of the model had more effort put in.
Just do you know macca I found this video very useful. I've been working on a dread waaaah for 40k and have started with multiple deff dreads. After this video I've realised I probably need some troops before continuing. Thank you for pointing that out.
Idk how to do a narrative list but would the AOD box work for alpha legion one 20 man, one 10 man tacticals 2 squads of 5 of lernean and one 10 man squad of Cataphractii, a 10 or two 5 man squads of volkite culverins heavy support, Contemptor Dreadnought with two dual volkite, and armillus dynat. I wanna do mostly volkite to kind of theme them all together and I like the paint project aspect of volkite also. But i would prefer to do a narrative list from a book.
Another thing i do to save money is to look at the force organisation and go what do i need. i have x amount of troops/heavy support/elites but no fast attack. So instead of buying another tank id get some bikes (its an example). then go what would help me next
It took me forever to get my Iron Warriors paint scheme right. I thought "it's silver and brass, easy". No, it's gunmetal and bronze and it's very difficult to get just right. I've stripped a lot of models in alcohol, so many that I think of it as just part of the hobby. If you're playing sports you're gonna have to get x-rays and physical therapy. If you paint models, you're gonna have to dunk em in the alcohol and paint em again.
I honestly don't mind too much that my silver basecoat + akhelian green Alpha Legion does not look completely uniform. It was my first foray into contrast paints and I learned along the way. Especially the Spartan Tank needed a LOT of trial and error to get to a result that was "close enough" to the rest of my army. Yeah it's not perfect, the tank is a bit uneven in its basecoat, the first 2 squads of tacticals were done in a much more heavy handed way than the later units I painted, but I can look at my army and see the progress I made along the way of painting them. I do agree with the overall sentiment of the video, but I will say this. The idea of "build your army smarter by buying way more than what's in the base box", while a good tips for more experienced (and affluent) players, the starter box does genuinely make for a decent starting point to build on over time. When I do get a cataphractii praetor, the 2 in the box can technically be used as certain consuls. I did add 2 contemptors (one is on the way from the far east after GW discontinued the AL contemptor, but don't tell them that). I was able to convert a squad of taccies into a recon squad by repurposing some old Warhammer Fantasy spears into longer barrels and silencers. And yeah, in the end some of what I have may be shoved off to the side to never be put on the table again, but honestly, as a beginner in Horus Heresy, I prefer that happening organically than buying even more upfront.
I've had some success with them, for sure. That being said, I must say I play Iron Hands - so I've already got an inherent bonuses. I've also got Battlesmith everywhere. They have great weapon options, but just take care - if anyone wants one destroyed, it'll be destroyed.
For their points cost they are a workhorse. Varied weapons, low cost to field, etc. I'd say if you need tanks but aren't committed to a RoW or legion that makes them better they are perfectly passable.

Good video... I would say if you are playing narrative or themed then how good the units are doesn’t matter as much. This kind of play style IMO is more fun, sociable and avoids the meta chasing

Let’s look at this in reverse: if you got the Age of Darkness box set, what is the legion that is most playable out of the box, o extras needed. My gut says Dark Angels, Imperial Fists, Ultramarines, or Sons of Horus.
Macca, with your old group, have ya'll still be trying to get a few games of 1.0 going? Have they all moved to 2.0? I'm curious what some of the older HH playgroups have been doing with this edition and some of the unpleasant rules/rites/datasheets
For me the AoD bundle needs Cataphractii swapped for Tartaros and the Spartan for a Proteus. The two HQs I take or leave because they are surprisingly easy to convert (I made the axe one a librarian and the sword one a chaplain without much trouble).
I was gonna say the Praetors get a lot of hate on here but even a week after release I saw TONS of amazing conversions of these models. Saw a Dark Angels one of the sword praetor the other day that actually made the stupid giant sword look badass. On the Spartan that's pretty much what I did with my second box - got a free Spartan out of selling the bits then realised the Proteus was a better buy, sold the Spartan and bought the Proteus with the money instead.
Another great video that hits me where it hurts. And that's fine. I bought my army for Death Guard and fair enough I overdid it. Fortunately it wasn't much. 10x mk3 breachers 20x beanies 10 deathshrouds ( this I over did. I should have just bought 5 and use 2 40k deathshroud for hq) Typhon. 2 x contemptor dreadnought ( should have held on one and wait for the 2nd) And Mortarion for flex ( this I really want for collection so maybe?) Still i was tempted to add grave wardens but fortunately I heard off for now. But yeah start small is great advise
A lot of people i think do look at your videos for more than three seconds. I think you think they only watch three seconds and are not informed as it would hurt your bias. Im 1:41 in and already agree -with your first statement for those who are building armies for playing with, to not be enticed by what GW puts out as bundles, that they are usually filled with units noone wanted in the first place and ones with rules that are dire.....for those who collect the models for painting or building/converting however they can sometimes provide a good deal and a good amount of hobby time. Its quite difficult justifying "buying models based on game performance" as GW will most likely weaken those units at a later date, making them just as obsolete anyways..... You do become a greater painter if you're able to mix colours on the fly, understand how they interact with other colours and surfaces intrinsically and provide consistency on the model throughout, there are gradients of colours that you cant buy. However you dont need to be able to do so to provide a good result, limited ability to buy paint at the time or lack of funds also make it a good idea to at least dabble in mixing yourself ...its just another aspect of the hobby under your belt and one that showcases your experience.
I actually justified doing SoH originally just simply because Death Guard SHOULD NOT be in MKVI, I dont care what anyone says, and the AoD box set was good value. Finished the set and decided I just wasn't interested. Started my DG now and I am happy.
Great video, thank you for doing this. Could you possibly do more videos on how to make the best use of the box set for those of us new to heresy who bought one or two box sets before we realized what we were getting into ? Like which legions uses it best, what rites of war etc. Again thanks for all you do !
Well, on this channel I got the Age of Darkness boxed set on release day, and built, converted with parts and green stuff, painted and based the entire boxed set of 2 praetors, a contemptor, 10 cataphractii, 40 tactical marines, spartan tank PLUS an additional unit, within 3 weeks, whilst working full time, showing off updates on Instagram as I went. I then posted the army on this channel. I feel like that's a really good speed for the level I achieved.

wanted to play alpha legion csm as first army got burned out on painting trim got a chaos knight as a gift now going full chaos knights as i sit here debating iron hand or alpha legion for a 30k army as i got burned on csm your videos are great love the content really helps not buying into the FOMO
Let’s look at this in reverse: if you got the Age of Darkness box set, what is the legion that is most playable out of the box, o extras needed. My gut says Dark Angels, Imperial Fists, Ultramarines, or Sons of Horus.
I build mine by playing Mantics Firefighr
Macca, with your old group, have ya'll still be trying to get a few games of 1.0 going? Have they all moved to 2.0? I'm curious what some of the older HH playgroups have been doing with this edition and some of the unpleasant rules/rites/datasheets
We've moved to 2.0, but with issues.
@@TheOuterCircle did you guys agree on any "house rules" to compensate or are you rigorously sticking to the current plates?
For me the AoD bundle needs Cataphractii swapped for Tartaros and the Spartan for a Proteus. The two HQs I take or leave because they are surprisingly easy to convert (I made the axe one a librarian and the sword one a chaplain without much trouble).
I guess Cataphractii were more iconic for the Heresy and the Tartaros look really small next to the Mk VI.
10x mk3 breachers
20x beanies
10 deathshrouds ( this I over did. I should have just bought 5 and use 2 40k deathshroud for hq)
Typhon.
2 x contemptor dreadnought ( should have held on one and wait for the 2nd)
And Mortarion for flex ( this I really want for collection so maybe?)
Still i was tempted to add grave wardens but fortunately I heard off for now. But yeah start small is great advise
Beanies 😂 im imaging a bunch of helmetless astartes who sudden became self conscious about their hairline
Black shields still have nothing. That is all.
What’s the fastest anyone here has painted an army?
Well, on this channel I got the Age of Darkness boxed set on release day, and built, converted with parts and green stuff, painted and based the entire boxed set of 2 praetors, a contemptor, 10 cataphractii, 40 tactical marines, spartan tank PLUS an additional unit, within 3 weeks, whilst working full time, showing off updates on Instagram as I went. I then posted the army on this channel. I feel like that's a really good speed for the level I achieved.
@@TheOuterCircle I followed that what’s more impressive was you customized the army too and green stuffed detail. I’m currently doing the AOD set to see if I can do it in a similar time. Have you played any games with the salamanders?
How to build a Warhammer army smarter? Don't buy into GWs ridiculously unfun pay to play mass combat games and just play skirmish.. or 3d print your own and don't buy GW products. I haven't bought anything except 2 Necromunda books over the past 2 years and I feel great..
Pdf rulebooks, wahapedia, 3d printer and recasters made this hobby more comfortable and enjoyable for me. Literally better experience than what I had buying gw only at the start of the hobby
@@myrddraalhalfmen9524 I've pretty much moved on from playing GW games except Necromunda and some old school stuff like Mordheim.. I just can't with GW anymore they are just too greedy and the game cool lore aside kinda sucks anyway. I'd rather just play Warhammer Armies fan creation or One Page Rules for large grim dark future games or even mantics games these days even I can't stand the official models are more fun lol. I've been collecting for on and off 35 years I don't need GW toxic greed and bs anymore lol
@@DeusMachina71 Yeah, I can relate. 9th edition was very boring. The only enjoyment from it for me come from the feeling of visiting local wargame clubs and casually moving minis with some guys. But for example Infinity or SW Legion have a fun gameplay that you can actually enjoy. And also could have great narrative, as I discovered with Infinity. (No need to mention Star Wars)
Also onepage rules are so simple and fun to play.
Mantic games my friends
Sky Hunters not good at all? You are just bad at the game if you think that. They are a high skill ceiling unit.
Buiolding Warhammer army smarter... Don't buy warhammer!
Step 1:
Dont.
Step 2:
Battletech
Excellent whine! G W should up prices another 5%!
