It was written and dedicated to the original singer, Sid Barrett. Sid suffered from schizophrenia, and the band watched as Sid slowly lost his battle of being able to distinguish what was and wasn't reality (this is my understanding from a very in depth documentary of the band). It was a tribute to Sid and their way of expression at the loss of their friend. Wish you were here...

Sad news guys Brian Humphries the sound engineer on Wish you were here, sadly passed away on 29th May 2024 !! My neighbour and friend will be sorely missed !😢😞😞
That’s a real shame. On a positive note if there is one, his work will last forever in this music, something that few people will have after they have passed away. He has left his mark on humanity.
The only Pink Floyd video that is an absolute must see is Echoes Live at Pompeii. They play live in an empty ruin of a coliseum in Pompeii Italy. A fantastic live performance.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band. I have seen them four times live. I have seen so many concerts in the 62 years I have been alive, but I have never seen anyone perform better than they do. This song always hits me hard. I lost my brother to suicide a few years after we saw Pink Floyd in concert, and this song always brings back good and very bad memories.

“We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl year after year. Running over the same old ground, what have we found, the same old fears, wish you were here” I quoted this portion of the song for several years after my mother died in 1989 and it was just my father and I living on in the same house where my mother once was. Anything from Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You were Here and the Wall is fire. Anything from the Pulse concert and Great Gig in the Sky from the Delicate Sound of Thunder video, with Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom, and Margaret Taylor singing.
Peg reacting to Floyd is gold. When someone asks me who I think were the greatest rock bands, I tell them this. Zep, Floyd, Rush, Sabbath, and Purple were all above number one. After those 5, we can discuss who is number one. Maybe Beatles, the Stones, the Who, maybe Metallica?
The Beatles are the greatest band. Greatest Rock band maybe not.... greatest pop band...maybe not...psychedelic band...folk rock band...maybe not...overall though They stand above all those youve mentioned outside of genre
David does exact guitar solo at the Pompeii show...and is more incredible because he's that much older and still killing it. The back up singers ,other musicians the historical site makes for my favorite show of theirs...
The song is beautiful. Waters said this about writing the song; It’s to encourage myself not to accept a lead role in a cage, but to go on demanding of myself that I keep auditioning for the walk-on part in the war, ‘cause that’s where I want to be. I wanna be in the trenches. I don’t want to be at headquarters; I don’t wanna be sitting in a hotel somewhere. I wanna be engaged.”
I lost my close friend Jimmy “Pink “ Floyd on graduation weekend 1995 . Over the past 29 years whenever I’m going through something , this song comes on . I feel it’s his spirit telling me it’ll all be all right.
Pink Floyd was phenomenal for many reasons, and pretty much any live performance (esp the Pulse tour, esp "Comfortably Numb") is worth watching. As a musician, you'll like that Pink Floyd played the first surround sound concert in May 1967, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. They changed the experience of attending concerts forevermore. 💛
I will be 62 next Friday, June 28th, and I LOVE Pink Floyd. I introduced my granddaughter to them in when she was 4. She loved to yell "Vera" to the song. "Vera". It's from the album "the Wall". Here is a little info on that song. "Vera is a beautiful and poignant tribute to Vera Lynn, a British singer whose songs provided comfort and solace during World War II. Listening to “Vera,” one can’t help but feel a deep connection with the past and the struggles faced by those during times of war. The song captures the essence of longing for a brighter future, where loved ones can be reunited once again. (Writer Unknown). If you want a couple more to react to I recommend, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and Comfortably Numb, they are in my top 10. Thanks! Beth Ann
This song has all the connotations of loss, grim reminders of friends and loved ones who took the final step to bring about the end. And wondering what their final last thoughts were as they succumbed to darkness.
Pink Floyd is just one of those few bands... The Wall will forever be my favorite album/s from them but they did very good, solid, honest and beautiful work afterwards!... And there's no way anyone can deny it!
Ok, 1st don't be insecure!! Not all of us are aholes... The rest of us will stick up for you. 2nd, one of the stories that came out about this - and many of their songs - is that it's about Syd Barrett who was a founding member. He has a tragic story of mental illness. 3rd, most of us were stoned listening to Pink Floyd. So some of us might regress to saying 'Dude....' the rest of the day. Lol
My dad told me when you listen to Pink Floyd, you just lay back, close your eyes and let the music flow through you. It's just a peaceful relaxing mellow time. Please do more of Pink Floyd
Oh man! I had a boyfriend in college (1989/1990) that absolutely loved PF. We used to go to the Pink Floyd Laser Light Show at a local museum. Super cool! Anyway, eer since then,Floyd has been one of my favorites!!!! Honestly though, if you reallllly wanna listen to Floyd, the very best way to take him in, is to drive out to the middle of nowhere, lie on thw hood of your car, nothing but you, the nightsky and stars, and Floyd blaring from thw stereo. I spent many nights that way in college. You can feel their music to the bone. Incredible.
I get so emotional listening to this song, it's so beautiful and the acoustic guitar is gorgeous. There are so many wonderful Pink Floyd songs, another one which means a lot to me is 'High Hopes', a live version from the Pulse concert is fabulous. The Pulse concert from 1994 must have been fantastic to attend and the song 'Comfortably Numb' from there has got one of the best guitar solos ever from David Gilmour, I think you would love it! Another one is 'Sorrow' from the same concert, the guitar sounds are incredible.
Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb are my most favorite songs by Pink Floyd. As teens we synced up The Darkside Of The Moon Album with the Wizard Of Oz (without sound) it was Awesome! My parents listen to Pink Floyd and got stoned with their friends after we went to bed at night. Many nights I fell asleep listening to them.. 😊 Thanks for the reaction.. I knew you would like this. ❤
My thoughts are if you can find the time to just kick back and listen to some full albums of Pink Floyed you won't be disappointed. I'm 74 years young and i chill to them all the time. Love the reactions ✌
the definition you found online is ridiculous, probably written by some nobody with lofty ideas ,spewing out nonsense from their own imagination. wish you were here was straight up written by rodger waters for his friend and former bandmate syd barret - period! if you have some free time look up the documentary - the story of wish you were here and hear it from the band members themselves !
Pink Floyd was my husband's favorite band. Apparently they had a lot of fans because every night except weekends one of our local radio stations had a one hour show. My husband listened every night. I miss him asking which is Pink and which is Floyd. You should read up on them. They have quite a background, including how they got their name.
This has been my favorite Pink Floyd album ever since it first came out (yeah I'm that old). I've seen Pink Floyd in concert 3 times in Detroit. The 1st time still ranks as the best concert I've ever seen. It, as mention before, is about Syd Barrett.
If anyone sees this and will prayer for this shattered Mama and my you get son...my oldest son, ANTHONY, was just murdered. Only 32. This was one of our songs. I can never listen again. We can use all prayer 🙏. Ty
Comfortably Numb from Pulse has possibly the best recorded oerformance of one of the greatest guitar solos ever. And The Great Gig in the Sky, I _think_ also from Pulse, showcases 3 amazing singers. They're both worth reacting to.
Pink Floyds album "Dark Side of The Moon" holds the record for most consecutive weeks on the charts - 724 weeks. That's 15 straight years! The core Floyd albums (like the core 7 Moody Blues albums) were meant to be listened to in their entirety, in one sitting as they tell a story. I still love to dim the lights, put on my headphones, lean back and just let the music wash over me.
If you check out anymore by Pink Floyd, please react to Comfortably Numb Live Pulse Concert 1994. An incredible performance and one of the best electric guitar solos that I've ever watched.
Wish You Were Here is my favourite Pink Floyd song. It's beautiful. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl year after year". There probably isn't a video for this soong.
I used to smoke one, float in the tub, and zone to Floyd in my teens. You have to just *vibe* to Pink Floyd. Nowadays I just lay on my couch and spin the vinyl, close my eyes. They’re an experience to be sure.
"You know when a wave just comes over you?" I've been listening to Pink Floyd for over 40 years, so, yeah, that wave is a very familiar friend. At times, it was a daily thing.
YAY!!! One of my FAVS - they are truly an experience!! Their music has been part of my life in many different ways and over many different times....INCREDIBLE music and lyrics.... One of the beauties, to me, of their lyrics - they mean SO VASTLY different things to different people...and, for me: they've meant different things at different times in my own life. You SHOULD check out the lyrics in the song TIME....it's a PRIME example.... ENJOY, BP!!! These are just TWO of my favorite songs by them...THANKS! HUGS!!
When I was a teenager. There were no music videos or MTV. My experience with this great music was headphones and these remarkable sounds in my own private concert. I did see Pink Floyd, and it was a great experience. But to be honest, I still prefer my vinyl and headphones.
Start with any of the early albums and listen to them song by song in order, then album by album in order, start to finish. Then end with "The Delicate Sound of Thunder and The Pulse live shows to finish it off. My Son grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Santana, Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers. He's 34 now and still loves all of the music from my Era as a teen.
a few of us dropped some acid and a few for the first time and played the heck out of this tape. 3 hrs in the nubies had to go home and had no idea the buzz was going to last 12 hrs or so. We gave them this tape and the went home and played it till they had to goto work the next morning no sleep beaming still. Great times
Pink floyd's music transports my mind to another dimension, and I don't need weed to help me get there. Their music is the only thing I need. The intro in this song is longer and it's some really beautiful guitar playing.
This track is off the Wish You Were Here album, 1974...it is the follow-up to their epic hit album Dark Side of the Moon. The band did not feel like DSotM was their best product, felt that tracks were incomplete, immature, and unrefined. They worked several years making the album with live shows to work out each track into masterpieces they felt they could be proud of. The only thing is, when they got to the studio, the visit of a previous bandmember caused such a reaction that they didn't use the songs on the album, instead pushing them off to the next album, Animals, and in its place they created songs that were more of an homage to their lost member. While they felt it necessary to give the proper respects to their lost member, they also had a message they fully intended to push with this album that didn't go away, so they created 2 tracks just for that message, something a rapper would truly understand as it is about the music industry and how it was changing to a more corporate structured business and less about the art...those 2 tracks are "Have a Cigar" and "Welcome to the Machine"...these really really need to be on your list to react to, but the soul of the album wouldn't be represented if you don't also check out Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
Pink Floyd is a genre unto themselves aint no other band ever in my 60 years on this plain made me think as much as Pink Floyd does with their music Shine on You Crazy Diamond perhaps the greatest music composition ever
They wrote this to honor their friend who died. If I remember right it’s one of their band mates who died. Wiki: tribute to the Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett, who had left seven years earlier due to his deteriorating mental health. released on 12 September 1975. Many artists have covered this song and it is a beautiful song each version I hear.
The second verse describes all the things traded to be in the band. Cold comfort for change. A walk-on part in a war for the lead roll in a cage (becoming a rock star instead of doing a turn as a soldier) . The whole album is worth a listen
Brings me back to when i was in the Army. AFN used this for a commercial from the army about the M1 Abrams cause they couldnt show regular commercials. You do realize there were no music videos until the 80s right
It was written and dedicated to the original singer, Sid Barrett. I've been listening to Pink Floyd for over 40 years, so, yeah, that wave is a very familiar friend. At times, it was a daily thing.
I may only be 27 but this is an all time favourite song of mine it’s so beautiful!
HUGS!!
Glad you enjoyed it B P, you’re hearing what I heard 50 years ago. I’m still swimming around the same fishbowl ❤️🏴🇬🇧
Such a rabbit hole!!! Song gets me in my feels everything just like shine on you crazy diamond and comfortably numb
Loved and missed.
When I was a teenager. There were no music videos or MTV. My experience with this great music was headphones and these remarkable sounds in my own private concert. I did see Pink Floyd, and it was a great experience. But to be honest, I still prefer my vinyl and headphones.
Best concert I’ve been to. Mellow, hard and all in between ❤️🔥
Start with any of the early albums and listen to them song by song in order, then album by album in order, start to finish. Then end with "The Delicate Sound of Thunder and The Pulse live shows to finish it off.
My Son grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Santana, Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers. He's 34 now and still loves all of the music from my Era as a teen.
Put on the head phones, close your eyes and just listen. A high will follow, no drugs needed. The opening guitar is pure perfection…
a few of us dropped some acid and a few for the first time and played the heck out of this tape.
Pink Floyd and Tool is the music you can just chill and think.
I like your choices. Alison Krouss, ""When you say nothing at all." So beautiful. Good, old song.
One of the best concerts, even in rain! Outdoor stadium, WI, mid 1970s, as teen. Sting was a 2nd best, early '90s, Mt View CA.
An all time legendary song
One of my all time favorites!
Pink Floyd is a vibe.
great gig in the sky!!!! man the singing is amazing an the concept with the whole album is greatness!
One of my favorite chillaxing songs! Comfortably Numb is another fantastic one in this vein. It's also on The Wall
Pink Floyd is a genre unto themselves aint no other band ever in my 60 years on this plain made me think as much as Pink Floyd does with their music
Shine on You Crazy Diamond perhaps the greatest music composition ever
You do realize there were no music videos until the 80s right
FYI, regarding that video you wondered about watching instead, I believe that's a show that was captured and released as a live album. It's fantastic.
You listen to Pink Floyd from your insides out, then back in. Becomes a part of you.
Pink Floyd "comfortably numb" live at pulse
