- Carnitas is juicy and tender shredded pork with crispy, flavorful edges. It’s a staple in Mexican cuisine and easy to make at home. All you need to do is toss all the ingredients in your slow cooker, let it do its magic, then pop the shredded pork under the broiler to get those crispy, caramelized edges.

Oh boy, you guys are gonna love these carnitas! I say a couple of times in the video to cook the meat overnight, but just to clarify you simply need to cook 8-10 hours. That doesn't have to be overnight, that's just how I normally do it. ;) You could start this in the morning and have it for dinner! Who else is excited for Cinco de Mayo?! xo - Lisa

I’ve made this exact recipe a few times now. 10+ hours low and slow overnight. 1tsp of salt is not enough for a piece of meat this size. For more flavor, use 2tsp or even a bit more. For even more flavor, I added a bit more of all the spices and also used lime juice in addition to the orange. Excellent!

I’m literally in the middle of cooking 18 lbs or pork butt with this recipe. Ten hours in the slow cooker and the meat was absolutely tender and falling apart. I used 2 tsp salt and it’s still a bit bland (and I generally like low-sodium food). This is a great recipe, the meat is very mild, not at all spicy.
Made this last night. The best ever! Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes. Every single recipe that I have tried from your collection has been amazing and delicious.

I just made this recipe. It came out so good! The only thing I did differently is I put it in an instant pot instead of a slow cooker. 45 minutes on high pressure. I will definitely make this again!

Wonderful recipe! I let the meat broil for 5-10 minutes, removed it from the oven to stir it up, then broiled again for an additional 5-10 min, making sure I watched it very carefully. I loved loved loved the extra crispness! I also squeezed the juice of 1/2 of a great lime over the carnita meat. It was sooo delicious as is already but I had to make it extra crispy. Thank you so very much Lisa for the excellent recipe!

Orange juice is a KEY ingredient for me when I am cooking Mexican food!! Its adds a perfect citrus flavor little a little hint of sweetness to go well with the salts and spices!! Perfect!!

In true ME fashion, I always try to make a recipe my own by changing at least 3 things. These are the things I changed the second go-round:
1. Instead of pepper, I used 2 tablespoons of black peppercorn for more spice.
2. Instead of orange juice, I used 6 sliced kumquats for a more potent citrus 🍊 flavor.
3. Instead of the jalapeño pepper, I used a sliced pablano chili 🌶
It came out BEAUTIFULLY!!! But the baseline for this recipe will always be remembered as coming from you. I would never have thought to make carnitas in a slow cooker! I always made them in the oven with my braising pan. Thank you for the new route. I’m forever grateful!🤗

Hello, I made these with boneless pork ribs not sure if I am supposed to put those in a slow cooker but they came out good. I added the zest of the orange too. I like mine with sauce. Thank you for the recipe.

It turned out great, Excellent call to put them in a broiler to crisp them up. Makes a huge difference. I’m thinking something like a creamy chipotle sauce might go good with this too. This recipe is in my GoTo list from now on. Super easy and tasty.

Generally when I see a recipe for pulled pork, I don't even explore it because that dish is always smothered in barbecue sauce, blech, but I've never had one of your recipes fail me, so I made it the other day.

This is my go to recipe for carnitas and tonight I'm making carnitas tacos but with a twist. I'm going to soak my tortillas in the leftover liquid and then fill them before grilling them on my George foreman grill.
