  • @mikehenry6284

I bred paints Alan. A pinto is non registered. An Overo means the color doesn't cross over the butt or withers, like the horse they used in the movie Hidalgo. Tobiano paint is what Rowdy is, see how his color goes up and over his shoulders and butt. Your right on the fact that if he is a homozygous, whatever he's bred to, he will throw color. Of course just because he throws color, doesn't mean he'll have good confirmation etc. he's a little thick thru the neck, watch for founder. I wouldn't feed any super hot feed (too rich) anyway, hope this helps. Blessings to my farm family 🙌 Jennifer

There are many ways to “rescue” a horse, including gelding a lonely stallion. It truly is a lonely life. He’s anxious and pacing, and chances are he’s never been used for breeding. If you tried him on one of your mares, chances are, you’d “awaken the beast” in him, and his sweet nature might disappear. A good stallion prospect, makes a great gelding. I’d geld him before spring to avoid mares in heat, and before fly season so he doesn’t have pests all over the incision.

APHA , reg. paint horses are basically quarter horses mixed with a white pattern . If he’s not registered he’s a pinto , and his color is Tobiano . Those paw prints though ❤. Usually a dead giveaway for the homozygous gene . I bet he’s from registered stock .

    • @janicebrown1878

You said that Rowdy was a big boy, but at the end ov the video when you are panning the pasture horses, he is HUGE in the background! Dwarfs everyone else. I would be really uncomfortable with the way he's pacing and worry that he's going to try to get to those mares one way or another. When my son was little we'd ride out to one of the local farms to get pumpkins, and for a number of years they had a team of horses that they'd hitch to a wagon, and that was how you got out to the fields where the pumpkins were (they also had a couple of tractors). Then when you got back you could get hot apple cider and kettle corn. So, good memories. :)

Good show Alan and Vicky. I have a friend that had the most beautiful black/white paint. He had near perfect confirmation and a beautiful head. He had this horse in a pen with 12' high fence. Stud wanted to get to a mare and tried jumping over the fence. From under his chest, and all the way to his groin was ripped open. Stud was found still hanging over the fence and bled out before he was found. Broke this man's heart. Not just because the horse died, but because he thought he had the horse safely penned and he was. Just something that happens when you have a big, powerful stud horse around that is determined to visit the girls. The palomino mare sure moved out nice when Malcolm got on her. Can you believe this weather? Someone needs to give Mother Nature a few doses of Prozac!!

NO - not true. Quarter horse registry does not accept any horses with "excess" white. Stockings above the knees or hocks. Bald face where the white goes too far behind the eye area.Or any white spots on the body anywhere larger than 3 " diameter. Quarter horse doesn't want paint/pinto genetics because of the dominance of the spotting genetics. Registered Paint horses however can be part Quarter horse/ part Reg. Paint horse. Don’t risk gelding at 15! We had a stallion die horrifically after gelding at 7 from complications from the surgery. He is old enough that it’s unlikely his disposition will change, also his crest could very likely fall, and that would be a shame.

You’re right he’s a beautiful boy but at 15 and still a stallion it’ll be lots of work if you’d consider starting him under saddle. I know where you’re coming from because you’ve got a lot of other projects going on and Blake is not going to be available. I had to cut back (in my 50s), had to remember spreading myself thin isn’t as easy to bounce back from especially when taking on training a horse daily. If you’re thinking about breeding, more work and time too during and after. Only one of you and the pocketbook only goes so far too. I had a soft, bleeding heart and had pasture pets till my last one passed a few years back (at one time I had 8-plus my others and my husband was ready to set me out to pasture lol). I get it, it’s a possible new adventure but only one of you and your time is busy too. Whatever you choose, stay focused on why you do what you do and your mission because it’s been a blessing to watch your channel. God bless 🌻⛄️
