Barely survived a plan crash, watched his friends die, his wife died due to pregnancy issues in the 80s... They say he dove into the bottle and never came out in a way to deal with it all. Then had a car wreck with his fiance which killed her and got him a manslaughter charge and paralyzed for the rest of his life. RIP to one of my favorite guitarist.

Ive seen Allen live with the band twice. He was the cheerleader, the wild one and the reason I learned to play guitar. In my opinion, he was the rawest, most talented player that I have ever seen. If alive today, he'd be a legend. When I was in Jacksonville, I went to his old home....a mansion! I was haunted as I stopped in every room to think. I saw his recording studio, the pool, the garage for his cars, the pond in the back, and I just thought to myself how honored I am to be here, remembering my hero, Allen Collins. The most under rated player and also under rated within the band. Yes, Ronnie was great, but Allen deserves much more publicity. That Free Bird solo? He left a legacy as having played one of the greatest solos of alltime! RIP, AC.

He stood at the top of the mountain and took too many tumbles down. A well known guitarist that just had way too much bad stuff happen in his short life. Losing his friends in a crash he survived, being injured, losing his wife that was so dear to him, the drunk crash was on him, but losing his girlfriend in said crash & his ability to walk AND play guitar was more than any man can bear. I’ve read he was struggling with health issues until he passed. He wrote some amazing music we are still enjoying 3+ decades later. I hope he is RIP with his beautiful wife. He was a legend. 😢

Thank you for gracing us and blessing us with your talent and your presence on this Earth and hope to see you in the next life. You had something special about you and it makes me sad how God could strike someone down who had so many tragedies that you have had in such a short life he lived so hard and had so many lives in just a short time his life is just getting started it hurts thinking that he can never play guitar again. I'm sure that that killed you. How could you feel like you wanted to go on lately lost your sense of your identity you know it's just tragic you're a beautiful soul and God I wish I was born in '52 I would give anything to have met you the most beautiful soul in a person I've ever seen. Why don't they make them like that anymore? They don't make them like you Allen you were Cut From a Different Cloth. All I can say is I am damn proud that we share the same Mars sign. According to a police spokesperson, his license had already been suspended "numerous times" for driving under the influence; after the crash, it was revoked permanently_*

I met.him in 1975. They say he was 6"3", but he seemed even taller! I had to leam my head back to look him in the eyes. He had a red t shirt on, with white bell bottoma. Over that he had this long white lab coat which even made him look taller! We exchanged some small talk, and i could tell he was a gentle soul. Even though he had a beauriful smile, i sensed he had some sort of depression that he had been going through and that he tried to hide from others. And he also had this dark haze that seemed to surround him. This was before his wife's death.
I remember being very concerned for him, but no one i talked to seemed to be aware of what the problem with him might be.

Sometimes when you're tall and gentle as a kid, others who want to make a name for themselves to look macho will pick on or fight these kids because they know they won't fight back. We've all read how Ronnie was driving around looking for him to play guitar and Larkin Collins ran up a tree because he thought bully Ronnie at 17 was gonna pick a fight w him. Probably like other kids did.

@@davidmalone3317 Sounds familiar to me. Heard Skynyrd first time when 14 years old and though had been really hooked in to Black Sabbath and ACDC before Skynyrd changed everything. Skynyrd really was something very special and rare, more than just the music. The best band ever. Think Ronnie was a very very unique person, like a prophet or something. And Allen... His solo in Freebird must be the geeatest solo ever arranged and performed. It's so unfair that though the solo is a hall mark of rock guitar playing Allen Collins in my opinnion should get more credits of it. So emotional and powerful. The story of Lynyrd Skynyrd is so unbelieveble. Im now 52 and still I found Skynyrds sound and songs fresh as yesterday. Skynyrd's legacy will never be forgotten.

Gene Odom has stated that just before his car crash, Allen had recorded an album called the Allen Collins Band and that it had just been released and was doing quite well. He said it was really good, but the record company just let it go, because the crash paralyzed him and there was no chance of him playing again.
Gene said that album would have put him back on top again, but because of the car crash any hope for that was gone. How absolutely heart breaking and horrible it must have been for him!

That is what drinking and driving does .. Collin's was charged with DUI manslaughter and had to do PSA to avoid prison time

Allen Collins was an amazing guitar player he had a rough life and was so sad to hear when he had passed away it was hard enough not seeing him on the stage playing with the band sitting in a wheelchair but at least we still had him and now he's gone may he rest in peace and I'm sure he's up there with Ronnie and the rest of the band rocking out

A short life and yet so much emotional and physical pain. Like the 1987 footage and Allen seems in good spirits.

@@samnobody8926 ....wild and crazy guys don't channel their high energy levels properly and then create miseries of their own making. He always struck me as a guy with ADHD whose impulsivity lead him to make too many poor and very costly decisions.

Gary or one of the boys should have gotten on the mic and publicly reminded Allen that if it weren't for him they wouldn't have been there, thanked him and made a big deal about him being there each and every time he had to sit from the sidelines and watch what he helped create carry on without him 💔 jeez

I heard that duting the recording of the Rossington Collins band, that Gary's wife, who was single then, had a hard time deciding whether she was Allen's girlfriend or Gary's girlfriend. But further her career she did.

If you notice Ronnie's birth year was listed as 1949 , I was told once he changed it to 1948 in order to get his driver's license or to go to work. Rumor by a reliable source, if you notice the others are younger. Gary 1951 .
