- In this video I start work on building the frame rails for the car that I'm going to build from scratch. the car is going to be modeled after the IndyCars of the 20s and 30s. This is going to be a very long-term project, but its already been a lot of fun! Hours spent on this build total 27
No shortage of ambition. 👍🏻
I really look forward to this series as you progress through it.
I am sure it will turn out great. Especially if you get the steering correct. 😉
I hope this is the project that will make it channel take off... Been here since the half way mark of the tank and can't wait to see how your channel will grow.. and I think I speak for your small community by saying that we all love this content and can't wait to see what else you may be cooking up... Great ambitious project to take on, keep going man!
great to have you watching!
6 years and still isn’t finished but if you wait 6 years more maybe you will be closer to finish
Very exciting! When I was a kid, I owned a 1/4 Midget Indy Racer. Watching this build is going to bring back a lot of memories.
Oh man, this is going to be a monster of a build. Can’t wait to follow this to completion.
ITS BEEN 5 YEARS
This project is gonna be fun. Not that the others weren't, but this one is closer to my wheelhouse.
I hate you in the nicest possible way! your soo lucky to be able to do this MacroMachines.
and yes before you ask I am totally jealous of your ability, space, and opportunity to be able to do what you do!
Huge respect to you and hello from the UK!
this video of yours is enough to asses & prove as to what a human desires is probably an ammount of the determination blessed with artistic craftsmanship in hands to pursue it- you have both fortunately !!!
I’ll follow this project with great interest. I’ve been interested in building a Bentley 3 litre replica, electric powered and mostly carbon bodywork with a few safety upgrades. Fair play to you. 👍🏻
You seem to really enjoy TIG Welding and ya do a very good job too! ROCK-ON!
this was the first time I used TIG aside from a few little things and I'm enjoying it
From what I remember from my days working in oil field construction, TIG is the cleanest bead weld you can put down.
yeah, it takes a lot more prep since the metal needs to to be really clean, but the result is much nicer
I've been fabricator for over 35 years, where did you get you skills, you are very talented
Oh wow! That will be pretty cool!
You got skills there my lad. And clearly an inventive mind.
right on looking forward to the next video...!
This is perfect for you to do! Looking forward to seeing your progress. Thanks bro Anthony Kent
I love all the tig welding action!
this is the first time I've used the TIG welder very much and i'm really enjoying it. its nice to not have to worry about a shower of molten steel beads raining down on my feet lol.
This may well be the coolest project on RUclips. Good luck and God speed.
This is going to be awesome, I can not wait to follow the build! Keep up the awesome work👌
looking forward to seeing it finished keep it up love the work
I think this is gonna be the coolest project yet...and that's saying a lot!!!
Great start to an amazing project looking forward to following this one
Really keen to see where this goes. Keep up the awesome work!
Wow great to see you back with a BIG project....i shall be eagerly watching! Good luck my boy! Greetings from the UK!
thanks for watching!
stumbled across your YT channel yesterday! AWESOME!! Awesome projects, you've got some awesome skill! Thanks for posting!
I want to do something like this someday! Except my idea is to make a rat rod style coupe and instead of using basic old school stuff, I’d just swap in the entire drive train and components of a modern Dodge Challenger SRT. 6.4 L hemi, AWD swap, supercharger, all the computers and whatnot. Old school looks, new school guts. Street legal and a beast of a machine on the track.
Nice work, as usual. Who else was hoping to see some sort of DIY hydraulic rig used to BEND these frame rails? LOL
Just watched your latest upload 3rd April. Came back here to watch them all from the start again👍
Tolles Projekt. Von dir kann man lernen. Danke und weiter so.
This ought to be a fantastic project.
tell us you're like a third generation Blasksmith, ha ha - or are you just a Prodigy
amazing work young man, simply amazing !!!
just found your channel im planning a build like this in the future and this is just what i was looking for cant wait to watch the rest
Nice can't wait to see it finished.
This is going to be a great build
Cant wait to watch this series be nice to have longer episodes tho
Outstanding! Can't wait to see the next video.
Whoop whoop nice one bud love your channel dude keep at it 👍🏼👍🏼
Your best idea yet, looking forward to it
This is awesome, I love watching your videos and seeing what you build, can’t wait to see this one come out!
It’s fun to imagine you tig welding that fast.
Awesome, can't wait to see how it comes out.
Going to be another excellent build.
Glad to see you using the tig welder!
9th June 2019 - Just found your channel, starting at part 1 of this build.
His something I have always wanted to build, love it!!!
A really talented young man, keep it up!
Downvotes? A good kid doing the dang thing and not good? Great job
A suggestion. You could use a Pontiac Quad4 engine for power. Its a four cyl, just like the Offenhousers they used back then, and when the plastic trim parts are removed, it has a simular look as the old engine. It makes about 165 hp. and is adaptable to any number of tranny's.
Hey, young fella, you are amazing great videos
Wow! looks like this is going to be a real fun project for you and the channel !! I did not know you can TIG too did you just get a TIG machine? you are so very talented I bet your dad is a awesome fabricator too for you to know all this at such a young age. What do you do for a living with those mad skills ,hope you are using those skills to make you some money , any fab shop would hire you in a second with your background LOL!! Keep up the good work bro i love watching you take raw steel and make it into something . love that you sponsor Go powersports what a great site never knew about this site cause im trying too get all the steel together for a go-cart project real soon . any idea where i can find a nice cut list for a go-cart like the blueprint you have for this project.
i am kinda watching these out of order, as in watching this one last. What a great project. I was wondering why you did not plan on plating your cuts from the start? rather than making a ton of tiny cuts? Just seems like it would have been much easier? Or maybe that is what you found out afterwards? Anyway, love it
Rather than weld that triangle pieces of plate on the inside as you did. Use two pieces cut to the angle that you want twice the width in its length each side of the pie cut. Each side can be placed inside the tube on each side and plug welded through holes in the tubing on the side to weld insert to outside of tubing ( called a fish plate and a lot stronger).
Just watched ALL the videos over 2 days !! a basic question, how did you know the chassis/rails dimensions?
Hey, looks like it's going to be an exciting build, just started watching it today. Love these old racers. I had a question... Are you working off of self designed plans, or pictures of a specific car? The reason I am asking, is that the frame geometry already seems locked into a very specific vehicle arrangement. Thanks for the videos... I've always wanted to do the same kind of build with a Morgan 3 wheeler as my muse. Certainly of the same iconic shape...👍
I pretty much just did research on a lot of cars that I liked, and used pictures to design the frame
Great video series. I am really enjoying it so far. This is something that I want to do in the near future after I finish my CycleKart project. Cheers
This is one of my dreams as well, hope i may ever build one myself
Glad I found this channel! Although I must ask why tig weld instead of mig?
It's great to have you back! Keep up the good work!
Hey why dont you use a flap disc and grind a Vee shape on all your cuts. That way you have more weld and penitration after you grind it flat!!!
Make sure to keep track of all of the receipts for all of the materials that you are using for the build and document the entire process with plenty of pictures so that you can get a title for it when you are done and actually drive it on the road and have insurance. It is a huge pain to get a homemade vehicle titled but if you can tell them exactly what it cost to build and have proof in pictures it will make it a lot easier on you. Did you get the drive train yet?
yeah, my dad and I talked to a friend who registers titles on stuff like this to figure out what things to keep in mind and that was one of them.
MacroMachines I like the way you made all those cuts in order to make the bend smooth, I do that on my builds but I only make one cut and bend it, the way you did it (with a few cuts close together) makes it look a lot better, I hope you don't mind me coping that on my future builds, cheers
You showed us the tank before and said that the project was related to that never the less i am happy to see new projects
love the video, but I would highly recommend you to get a portable band saw. it would make things way easier
Wow, this is going to be a nice project
Sounds interesting , going to subscribe for now .
Always one down voter, just jealous of his talent I presume.
The more you talk about them, the more dedicated the trolls become.
I don't have an issue with a thumbs down, there maybe a genuine reason for it but at least have the balls to state why in the comments, in this case, I'm asking why?
@@nightster6378 I didn't dislike the video but constructive critisism, if you ever do a frame in the future, its just better to be safe then sorry, add some extra metal on your bends, thats where a lot of frames go wrong.
Awesome project! Someday, I will MIG and TIG as good as you... What MIG and TIG machines are you using?
Holy shit.
I was thinking about unsubscribing after things like that sofa or the way the four wheel motorcycle turned out looking more like a toy than a motorcycle but this... yes, you definitely graduated from Go-karts and lawnmowers.
Hi, I am a new subscriber and have watched a few of your videos and really looking forward to this build. There's a guy in New Zealand, he's dead now, but his name is John Britten, he had a dream, to build a motorbike. I see many comparisons in you two, take a little time and check out his documentary, I think it will inspire you and also give you an insight into what is possible for your future. Love your videos, great content, narrative and visuals. Many thanks from Australian viewer
Did you learn these skills some where or did you teach these yourself?
Nice welds. What was the reason you chose to hold the stick for some welds and wire-feed for others? thanks
the TIG welder gives a much cleaner better looking weld so i used that for most of it, but I went with the MIG for filling in most of the bend area because it's a lot faster and I dont have a ton of filler rod.
Thanks
holy crap yess ,cant wait to see this series
Nice project!!! Manda salve pro Brasil !!!
Now this is going to be a great project! would you consider maybe doing longer videos? you could upload unlisted videos just with less editing and link them in the description for those that want them. or not, your channel, Im still going to watch either way.
This is the best idea yet!!! I love the look of those older model Indy cars. Yeah this will be a big project, but you see to be having fun and you have pride of what you do, which makes these videos so much fun to watch! I have a couple questions though... What type of engine are you going to use and What type of transmission are you going to use for this Indy Car? But Great work and can't wait for this new series!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm not sure on the drivetrain yet
Oh yeah, have you decided on the engine and transmission combination? Just curious where you are going with the powertrain.
not sure yet, but a v8 would be cool
It would be cool! Just don't overpower your suspension. :-)
Glad to see this build I'm going to watching this on close I've been looking at the old school midget racers my self I was curious as to what engine your going to run in it are you going 4 cylinder or the 6 cylinder with the pipes through the hood or the header with the long 3 or 4 inch pipe from front to rear
cool idea for a project , looks like youre going full size on it
have you decided on the engine yet ?
one option i think realy has the look of a classic racing engine is an old jaguar inline XK6 wish came in about every jaguar made from 1949 up to about 1992 and had a realy nice dohc head with smooth polished aluminium valvevovers
the trans usually was a GM th350 or400 with a jaguar bellhousing , you probably whon't be able to find those cheap in the states though
in europe these engines survive the cars by decades , they where realy whell made inlike the metal of the body (they rusted out )
another option would be a flathead mill , though these whont be cheap either
too bad you done make a midget version of the car , those usually where powered by T ford stuff
Dis gonna be guuuuud!
so the steel is 3mm thiccc ?
Nice job!
just some advice. tack your ends and corners before start your first stringer.
Any reason you didnt use an oxy to roll/bend the rails?
What engine are you gonna use? Old flathead v8 from an ford f100 would be cool.
that would be my first choice too, but I'll figure it out when i get there
Is this going to be street legal? Or just a track only car?
street legal is the goal
Ok, so I have a question for you. If you build a car from scratch, then technically it is the model year that it is built and registered in and since this is a car, wouldn't you have to meet all the 2018 CAR specs? Air bags, bumper requirements, EPA emissions, etc? I think that people get around these things by making 3 wheeled "cars" that are actually classified as motorcycles. Just wondering because I don't see many people trying to build their own street legal cars and I think it may be for that reason. Great videos!
no. it's possible to get a title for an actual car and just "attach" it to what you're building (assuming what you're building will resemble that car). if you don't do that though it gets registered as a "special construction" vehicle which has certain requirements that vary by state. airbags, emissions, and things like that aren't part of those requirements.
That is awesome then! This will truly be a memorable event for you and us! :)
great project good job
noice can't wait to see it!
Now this is going to be cool
Are you going to use an actual car engine? I don't know what scale you want to make this but you could use an old straight 8 or v8. Or an old 4 cylinder.
Right On! Did you recently upgrade to TIG?
yep, and I'm enjoying it a lot lol
Is that an aluminum pipe?
Wow what a cool project. are you going to get it registered for the road.
yeah
Hello, what is the steel grade for the frame?
@MacroMachines this Type profile steel a500 grade? And what measurement and thickness Wall (mm)?
I used to read boys books by William Campbell Gault and he had several books about guys building their own cars to race at Indy!
whole car!!!
Nice idea
Really good video love the topic!
Ooooh yeah!
What tubing did you use for the frame? Dimensions and wall thickness
2" x 4" x 1/8" thick
@@MacroMachines How long are those tubings????
What engine you going to run?
I'd like to find and early flathead v8 but im not sure yet
oh wow thats awesome. have you thought about what engine youre gonna put into it yet?
I'm not really sure. best case scenario would be an early ford v8, but I'll figure it out when I get to that point.
I'm surprised you cut the frame rail with a jig-saw :)
