I had a 1987 Subaru Legacy with less than 60K miles. One day when my wife started the engine, a giant white cloud blew out of the exhaust. She turned off the engine and I checked the oil dipstick: Only oil with no coolant, but definitely a blown head gasket. It could have been worse, but repair was expensive. After this was repaired, it broke a timing belt. It had two and that 1.8 engine was non-interference. Again, it could have been worse, but repair was expensive. The tow truck owner loved me. Hmmm......
@@GaryKari Only 65K miles. At the time, Subaru would not allow aftermarket parts to be made, so I had to buy them from the stealership. The car ran great between breakdowns.
@@reidcrosby6241 My first Subaru. I've learned a lot about them since then. That's why it it was also my last Subaru. I switched to Honda and never looked back. My 65 Corvair only had a problem with the rubber pushrod seals. The synthetic ones didn't exist back then. That flat-6 was much better than the Subaru engine.
"Avoid the car if you see blue smoke coming from the exhaust or the hood, especially when the engine is running" If you see blue smoke coming from the car when it's turned off, you shouldn't worry as much? Lmao
@@immDroidz My car had white steam blow out of the exhaust in a huge cloud, all at once right after startup. The head gasket issue for a very long time. I never had this problem with flat-4 and flat-6 engines on my old VW or Corvair.
2004 xt 337000 km original head gasket. Love this car❤
nice comprehensive video, thank you!
Its only the 2.0 na that has a head gasket problem

You are supposed to have put the timing belt on when you did the head gasket.

Or if you see blue smoke coming from any car, at least if it's coming from the exhaust, you likely have blown oil rings. New engine is the usual fix.
