Garudius (Gradius) '95 - Boss Run - Recovery Run - Part 1

  • To Subscribers - The next portion of the Asterix LP has corrupted... so I'm going to upload this
    in the mean time.
In what is clearly an effort to inflict the most pain possible on myself, I've gone and done the insane thing of attempting... recovery runs against Gradius bosses.
What... the heck is Garudius 95?:
It's a fan game, and a damn professional one at that, to the point when I first played it I was convinced it was an actual Konami product. It was created for the Japan only NEC PC98.
It can be found at: www.gradiushome...
    What's a Recovery Run?:
Here's the basic idea: Get to the boss, and then die. Then beat the boss (and.. what parts of the stage it forces me to do.) with the few power-ups you get from the pre-boss checkpoint.
The hardest part about the Gradius series is, when you die, especially to one of the bosses, it's extremely difficult to continue. This is what makes the Gradius series amongst the hardest shoot em up's around.
I'm giving this great game hopefully a bit more video coverage. Enjoy!
As a general rule - the checkpoints in this game are fairly kind, which shows this guy showed some restraint where Konami didn't. XD
    Boss Notes:
    Hydro-Core:
The first boss to the has quite a few attacks at his disposal but isn't that hard to defeat. During the second phase of the boss he gains tentacles and starts firing even more lasers.
If he survives past this point he'll attempt to rush you and spray the screen full of destructible globs.. of.. water? I guess? He didn't live that long in this video.
    Serial-Core:
    I like this boss. :)
First phase is almost an exact duplicate of Crystal Core from Vulcan Venture ARC, to the point, much like that version of Crystal Core - you can sit in front of him and he won't move.
Second phase isn't much harder - the laser pattern is easy to weave between and the giant crystal lumps aren't a threat at all.
The third phase, now it gets interesting! You have to weave between his newly acquired shield, to deal damage to him, a nice attack. His laser isn't much of a threat as it has extremely bad aim.
    Drastic Tortoise:
His bullet patterns can be tough to weave through, and the hardest part is just hitting the damn thing! You get hardly any power ups to use, and I preferred to take speed over the slow moving missile.
The second phase is much easier - in fact he can't really hit you whilst you're hitting him.
    Grand-Core:
    Oh dear. :P
Poor fellow - theres a safe spot directly in front of him! Stay there.. and.. well... see the results. XD
Being directly in the middle allows you to avoid most of his attacks, just back off when he eventually tries to ram you. (He should be dead by this point.)
    Kougel Burn:
The level this things attached to is absolute hell, at least the boss isn't that hard!
Need to memorize the order of this guy's attacks, most are easy to dodge but his large fireballs certainly aren't - I needed an additional speed up just to avoid them. The secret is to keep moving - these things home onto you for a brief second.
He doesn't have much health - I haven't seen if he has any additional attacks as he never lives past this point.
    Mistic (sic) Cicada:
    Someone else remembers Lifeforce. :D
Ok, this thing is much harder than it looks. I found a couple of safespots by accident, and.. they definitely help. That eye-blast is nasty.
The second form is when it starts to get difficult. Staying above or below the beetle will let you avoid its spread fire, but you have to guide it as it crosses the screen. The most dangerous attack is the energy shield - it can be hard to avoid if your timing is a bit crap. The beetle also has alot of health - this doesn't help matters.

Man finding this again brings me back to a simpler time in life
We were staying at a bed n breakfast for a few days while lookin at some houses with the hopes of moving into Ohio (with my father being retired from the air force we figured to take the opportunity to move closer to other family members) from Tennessee, and being fresh outta elementary at the time (for time reference I just completed my bachelor's in computer science this December), I didn't have much to call my own - I had an Amazon Kindle, a DS, and not much else in general
This series, and someone's playthrough of Xevious 3D/G, was enough to kept me entertained over those days when we weren't doin anything - it feels stupid to say that nowadays but like, I only knew about like

Damn, Konami should feel ashamed with all the non-creative bosses they have made! Learn more from this fan, Konami! I love the 3rd both very much, by the way.

Gradius VI or Gradius 6 is on the way ... while Gradius V is unbelievable in the difficulties against the bosses ... we will see what konami will shows us in the future .... Gradius 6 will be something like a LEGEND to all Gradius games ^_^

Just a choice by the creator of the game.
The first music is taken from Gradius 3's second boss theme, the second is taken from Nemesis 3 on the MSX.
I suppose he wanted the organic bosses to have music from the latter game, seeing how that game almost exclusively has organic bosses.

Heh. The programmer who made this game certainly both was a fan of the series and knew what he was doing, both in terms of gameplay and checkpoint placement.
It looks like he continued the grand tradition of making crystal levels really difficult - the tight flying combined with those floating crystals that explode into 8-way fragments look painful.
Looking forward to the other part of this run!

  • @RavenXtreme
    @RavenXtreme 15 лет назад +1

Wow on the 3rd boss the theme just reminded me of "Shoot the Core". I hope you can get that one going again ACE, that was awesome!

  • @ACESpark
    @ACESpark  15 лет назад +3

    Parts.
    :p
This game has alot of bosses.
The crystal level isn't as bad as it first appears - the 8-way fragments don't actually hurt you, and are just for show.
For the most part this guy showed restraint where the main series would normally go "yep, that's fine."
The final level is how-ever a utter nightmare. I guess he wanted followed Gradius 3 very closely in that regard.

And woah! Drastic Tortoise was the one you showed when you did your ''next projects'' video o_o at the speed you showed it, the guy was slow, but now configured it looks an awesome boss fight.
Also very wicked bosses here are, konami should b proud of this fan made gradius :D

And Damn... This Gradius Series Has Been More Older Than DOOM Series. How About... Fixing This Vic Viper With A BFG 9K Cannon, And Replace Missiles With Heatseeking Rockets, And... Add More Explosions And Blood In The Death of Bacterions With Visor So Beautiful, It Responds With Every Hit You Take (With Hit Points Now Added), And Replace Lives With Infinite Tries And Easy Power-ups?
Yeah! I Mean How About Crossing Brutal DOOM Mechanics With A Gradius Game? We Can Create A BRUTAL GRADIUS!!! Fuck Yeah!!!

@pminer1113 Shoot em up's tend to get harder. They nearly always have useless starter bosses - that's part of the genre.
This game has 22 bosses, and it seems a bit unfair to judge the game harshly just because you don't like two of them. Games tend to get harder as you go along after all.
It's also a Fangame, and running on a system with some serious limitations. Considering everything, it's one of the most impressive Gradius fangames I've ever seen.

if we would like to match the difference in this game we can see that it's ideas may not be acceptable by Gradius Team if we've added it in some Gradius stages because the fan made game might be way different than the original but i must admit that the bosses attacks were outstanding ^_^
please don't misunderstand me but .... the pro players can master this game in a flash seriously after i kept an eagle eye on the bosses actions and processed it ^_^
Gradius IV on Hardest loop 1 is harder ^_^
