as someone with a bit of a severe case of overactive brain, my advice for other people with this issue would be to think long and hard about what you want to prioritize in life. that motivation is generally enough to pull me from the depths.

    Some other practical advice:
    1) Make lists that allow you the satisfaction of checking something or crossing it out. Much like side quests in a video game.
    2) Set alarms with the name of the thing you need to do, so it pops up when it rings.
    3) If you can do a task immediately when it's presented to you, do it. My grandfather always said: "If you want something done, ask a busy person."

The book that helped me get past this was The Now Habit, which redefines procrastination as a temporary solution. It allows you to protect your sense of self-worth because you think the work you do expresses your worth. You say: "Oh, I didn't do well on that because I procrastinated, not because I'm bad." But, your work is not your worth. Once you separate the two, you can free yourself to start developing a routine based on _discipline_ rather than motivation. It's still difficult to do creative or cognitive work, but that's what makes it work worth doing.

@@dinoview4537 I think what he thought was dissociation future self from emotional judging past self on actions that are defined as 'work'. So in the end one does not experience 'failure' the same negative way, it's 'feedback'.

    • @alfadas1443
      @alfadas1443 2 года назад +4

@@dinoview4537 If someone expresses "Your work = Your worth", that is a very important moment to ask questions.
Who judges your work and determines your worth, you yourself or others? What about your work creates your worth? If you take quality/quantity as an example and a person creates low quality/quantity of work, do they have lower worth as a person? Does it matter why the work was less in some way (lack of talent, effort, circumstances)? Do people differ in worth as unemployed, retired, disabled, infants? Does a infant's worth increase as their quality of work increases? Could a person have worth/value unrelated to the work they produce?
This idea serves you as long as you are working/functioning within the system and let's you of the hook for judging others. But really cuts both ways and can leave you feeling worthless if your work gets judged poorly by yourself or others. And if you are unable to produce work, then it's simply off to depression-land for you. As long you are harboring the idea "My work=my worth" good luck finding any self-worth down there as an unproductive lazy-ass depressed person.

    • @chrisc7265
      @chrisc7265 2 года назад +4

this is 100% why I procrastinate, because I know my "great ideas" will be less great when they go through the messy process of being instantiated into reality
maybe disassociating "work and worth" is a useful hack to get around that, but I wouldn't take that line of thinking too far --- if there's no worth to your endeavour, then why do it at all? To go JBP here, what you need is the courage to face failure and grow, not to disassociate yourself from your work

@@pierzing.glint1sh76 Perhaps that sentiment exists because it was necessary to find the path of least resistance. In other words, those who were more or less lazy because they avoided the most arduous path toward survival were the ones who inevitably survived and passed on their genes. In the modern context the saying “work smart, not hard” can sum this up. There are difficult tasks of course and they need to be accomplished, but being unnecessarily stubborn and refusing to see another viable path for completing specific tasks ultimately proves unhelpful to say the least.

A really brilliant analysis of these issues. Thank you, Professor Peterson, for being a great guide.
00:25 Meditation is such an important part of learning to focus. I think the problem with our interpretation of meditation is that it is often 'provided' without the appropriate training. Meditation is a spiritual practice that requires a lot of training to teach. (I'm a pupil, not a teacher, on meditation).
Cogitation is not meditation. Controlled breathing is not meditation. Desperately seeking to calm the nervous system using EFT, EMDR or similar...that is not meditation. Although they are linked, Western culture often conflates the these different parts of harnessing our brains to manage consciousness.
I know my comment may sound completely crazy! Sorry, if it doesn't make sense. No hate intended.

@@salman-11924 meditation is training of the mind. From a Buddhist perspective there are two types of meditation: samatha and vipassana. Samatha is for concentrating the mind. You focus op one object, for example the rising and falling of the abdomen, and when you notice the mind wanders you bring it back to the object. Vipassana is for insight. When the mind is sufficiently focussed all mental and physical phenomena are noticed and the transitoriness (anicca), unsatisfactoriness (dukkha) and non-self (anatta) characteristics are seen. When the mind realises all mental and physical phenomena are transitory, unsatisfying (since nothing lasts) and non-self (things happen by own accord, we cannot choose not to get old, get sick and die, no lasting permanent self) then natural happiness arises. The absence of suffering is happiness. This was the great insight of the Buddha. Everybody wants to be happy, to find what is happiness the Buddha looked at what is unhappiness. To thoroughly understand how we create suffering for ourselves we can find internal happiness, peace and contentment not dependent on conditions.

You have to train yourself, and reward yourself, and so on in order to keep at it. Treat yourself like a dog in that regard and it will work better.
With some luck and good training, those bad habits will be replaced, and will be ignored and left to die.
For me, success is around 30-50%... which is actually pretty good all things considered.

Perhaps it's because I'm somewhat autistic, but I've had a much different experience with many of the points discussed here. I have noticed subconscious, automatic behaviours I wanted to change and found it relatively easy to change them, including prolific cursing or overuse of filler words.
However I've had a much more challenging time attempting to curtail impulsive behaviours, like seething at a bad or embarrassing memory. I have ticks almost like tourettes in that respect, but not so severe, and they vanish when I'm engaged with or concentrating on something in my environment.
And I do find it incredibly difficult to sit down and do work when I know there's something more engaging or exciting I could be doing. I can only manage it for about 15 minutes at a time before my brain starts to fry; as though there's genuine physical resistance. But if I'm doing something I feel is fun, I can literally sit there and do it for days on end, to the detriment of my own health.
But I've also been in jail, deprived of nearly all environmental distractions and fun activities I enjoy. I found that in such a space, productivity was easy. If I only I had access to study materials and word processors, I could have gotten so much work done while I was in jail. But the moment I got out, distractions reasserted themselves and the spirit of productivity vanished like a thin mist under heat of day.

Dr. peterson gave it as an illustrative example, since, at the time of the video's footage, he was giving class to university students, that frequently cannot sit down and pay attention to class/study. The more general truth is that we sometimes can control our attention really well and sometimes not so much(or, sometimes, attention is lost completely). I've delved into my dreams and my unconscious quite a bit and I know for absolute certain that the body and unconscious are "spirited" and are quire sophisticated. I've noticed this in particular with regard to the subconscious. I'm no psychologist by any stretch, but from experience I now consider dreams to be the place where the subconscious and the body communicate with my conscious awareness. I've had that a couple of times where the communication was near or actually verbal (though a lot of it is through imagery).
Once I moved all the things in my attic (literally everything) and the very same night I had a dream alerting me to the fact that everything had a new place and so everything had become anew and unknown and scary. I told my subconscious that _because_ I had moved everything, _nothing_ was left unknown. The attic is no longer a scary place.
Dreams I get from my body tend to be more primitive and unsophisticated. For example when I have trouble breathing in my sleep, I'll dream that I'm drowning at the bottom of a lake or swimming pool. Since I know this, I take a deep breath right then and there and I can continue sleeping.
The most sophisticated dreams come from my subconscious. These tend to be job interviews and unlocking old memories of mine. There's a dream building I return to every once in a while that lends itself well to memory traversal. Often my dreams are about integrating different parts of my job with things I need _for_ my job. I speak a lot during my job so I often awake myself because I also speak in my sleep. It's always in English despite not being a native speaker.
If you've read this far, I hope this at least entertained you. I am wholly convinced one purpose of dreams is for the conscious to communicate with the rest of the whole being and so that's for what I'm using them.

It's so much easier to do dumb, unimportant things rather than actually try to get your mind right for a few minutes. I'm so glad I didn't have all this distraction shit while I was growing up. Would have missed alot of good times outside with friends or wouldn't have read books. I feel sorry for the kids who were babysitted by a tablet or even a TV

It's not like there aren't dumb and unimportant books to waste time on ("There are very many people who read simply to prevent themselves from thinking" - G.C. Lichtenberg, long before the internet). It's not technology, it's what you do with it. Just because words are printed on paper doesn't magically make them more noteworthy than what you can get on your tablet.

@@vibovitold Not sure if I fully agree, dumb and unimportant books, definitely. I guess what I was thinking about was the pleasure of being outside with friends. You acquire social skills plus just the fun you have. Might even include breaking a bone at some point, it will hurt then but it was always cool to go to school with a cast on and letting everyone sign it. There's just so much less personal interaction anymore. Hell, boys don't even ask a girl out face to face. They do it through devices. It builds self confidence to muster the courage to ask someone out who could easily say no to your face. That part sucks but their not all going to say no. Just so many things to distract us from the real world while living in our little virtual reality and it's only getting worse. It may just be a generational thing, I don't know.

You are obviously a caring person as this situation is concerning you, and your qualities will shine through to the kids. It is almost certainly not personal as they may be struggling with perceived split loyalties but they will realise you're not trying to erase anything about their biological father and the relationship will grow around that and become much better than it is now. Best wishes,

When Jordan spoke about when we are dreaming it's almost like we are watching a video and we are there watching it,
Many years ago I read about this in one of Sri Ramana Maharshi books he said we are not this body or this ego, we are the spirit, the organic body's heart is a pump it just keeps pumping it has no emotions just a function, its the spirit withIn is the real you, it neither speaks it's silent, its all witnessing observering our inner voice the one that they call intuition when we sleep we forget who we are we are not concerned with our name or what we look like that is a flesh body thing the ego is preoccupied with these details
the spirit is only the truth ....ask your self who am I continue to ask your self who am I
As this question is meant to dissolve the questioner as the feeling of energy just starts to soften its in our heart area, that's because we are spirit moving flesh, not flesh trying to get spiritual
Our ego is our mind that is not who we are ...if someone upsets you ask who does this bother it will always be the ego....as the spirit is never bothered its the all knowing witness its forever in joy forever in bliss for ever young and always honest its the truth and their is no higher religion than TRUTH.

I appriciate this, and your drive, and your being here in the same period as I am alive is, in its own way, baffling to me.
You may just be another man, but that goes to show why we all are so important to each other.
I feel like I can say that I guarantee the work you've done and talked so much about has left a really big, positive footprint in the younger minds of generations like mine, and close to mine.
The hate you have suffered and recovered from is driven by ignorance-hammers looking for nails, when some of us are 'screwed and twisted' in different ways.
Filled with hate and ignorance for anything they do not understand, and they are not looking for a teacher until someone actually can reach trough and tingle their curiosity.
You are definetely a tickler of minds, intelligence, logical and factual thinking, by an'large
