  • This video demonstrate the training course glitch in Paperboy Arcade (Rev 1 and Rev 2).
In the training course at the end of a day, there is a 1 pixel gap between the hit-box of the finish line and the hit-box of the fence on the right of the finish line. If you ride between those two hit-box, the game will let you past the end.
Then you ride in what seem like the training course but you ride in garbage and the more you go the more you corrupt the memory.
The third time you see the finish line, the hit-box will work, you can end there or redo the trick but you corrupt more and more the memory and eventually the game will reset.
If you're lucky, you may end up with a huge score, but since memory is corrupted, it's not guaranteed to work every time.
This glitch is not working with the last version (Rev 3) of the game. Work only with Rev 1 and 2 (in Mame: paperboyr1 and paperboyr2)

I discovered this back in the arcade. Was just thinking one day, "that spot by the finish line on the right looks like I can sli[p thru. I wonder if it will glitch?" They actually had to contact Atari and order a "patch kit" that closes the hit box. I was 15 in 1985. I also found actual secret levels on "Cloak and Daggar" arcade because I played games so much I would have dreams about doing things like this. I noticed the surrounding orange wall would take damage if shot ( game was a kit designed for Robotron so it had the same controls ). One night after in a dream I was playing and just kept shooting the and destroying the wall all I could on every map and found a flashing square. Walked over it and it was a bonus level.

You just confirmed a 35 year old memory. I knew I saw someone do this in the arcade back in the day. Just thought to look it up today.

I just searched for this because I remember doing this as a kid and a friend didn't believe me. I'm glad I didn't just imagine this. I was obsessed with paperboy. Legendary game.

Fun Fact: The glitch it's still present in Rev 3 but it's only accessible through cheating (and when i say cheating, invincibility). Just go out of the bounds and stay and surpass the Finish line and you are going to play the glitched training course.
The differences between Rev 1/2 and Rev 2 are:
-In Rev 1/2 the glitch is accessible through the 1 pixel gap trick. In Rev 3 the glitch is accessible by cheating only (yeah the 1 pixel gap trick is fixed).
-In Rev 1/2 the glitched training course will end after the second time (third time if you include the real too). In Rev 3 the glitched training course, you can finish him whenever you want.
-In Rev 1/2 after clearing the glitched training course, you'll earn with 1,000,000 points. In Rev 3 after clearing the glitched training course, you'll not earn nothing.

I pulled this off one day in the arcade and people crapped themselves when they saw my score haha. The only arcade glitch I was ever able to pull off.

My buddy discovered this one day. There was one kid in the arcade who legitimately and painstakingly reached the top of the leaderboard over weeks and months. The look on his face when he rocked up to see me and my buddy score 1,000,000 🤣🤣🤣

I saw someone do this! He even got the incredibly high score, but at the start of the next level it reset to 0. Still, it was easily the most jaw-dropping thing I've ever seen anyone pull off on an Atari game (other than getting to the end of the damn thing, of course).

I played Paperboy every week in town and I was shown this.
Only ever got it to work a few times. You have to be so accurate by the fence

I like how they wrote the training course music to loop the intro infinite until you hit the entrance, for the slow pokes that take their time hitting that first jump

I seem to remember another glitch in the arcade was going hard right just before the training course and you end up going to the right of the yellow barrier/wall? The game had to be switched off at the plug after that iirc?

I use to do this all the time, might still have the high score At Disneyland :) Down side is the games code for free lives, still see your score at a low number. While the Calculator permits the fake number, into the highscore registry lol.

@@JackTheGamer3 Not sure now, but as of 12 years ago they did. They had a medium Arcade near Space mountain. With about 2 other tiny ones, around the park. I'm sure they reduced them big time, By now for other entertainment. Most of there Upright games, were basic factory chips and settings = has all the bugs and glitches. Good old time :)

In Rev 1/2 on Hard Street, do the Grandstand trick, while making sure your Breakage Bonus is under 14k, and when you approach the next Course, just go hard left...crash into the kerb...and 64k+ Breakage Bonus each time 🙂
