    Hi. I'm a sixty nine year old man who lost his wife. I have recently started watching youtube videos to learn how to cook. Most people don't take the time to explain anything. You are absolutely wonderful and I thank you. You remind me of the way a couple of my aunts used to cook. But most importantly you use basic stuff which is all I have. I wouldn't even know what to buy. I have never had to cook for myself because I went from my mom to girlfriend to my wife. I know steaming is a good way to keep nutrients in vegetables. I watched a few videos and they confused me. You are clear, succinct, and you don't rush. You give me enough time to understand what you're showing and your process. This is the first video I watched. But I hope the rest of them are like this one. I would like to learn how to make hamburger meat. So I can make meatballs once in a while. I hope you have a video on that. Thank you so much for this wonderful video on steaming, which is also important to me because i'm waiting for dentures and that's gonna take almost a year, So I can't eat a lot of foods other people can eat. I need my veggies soft but I need nutrients. Excellent video, thank you for taking your time and using very simple kitchen utensils instead of new fangled ones that I have never even heard of. Also another round of applause because you weren't hawking some product for me to buy. I don't even think you told me to press the bell or whatever. How absolutely refreshing. Thank you and thank you again. Looking forward to your other videos.😊

    One of the nice things about becoming an adult is I now love veggies. And yet I haven't thought of how delish steaming them would be. I'm looking at you, bag of carrots. As always, thank you Paula for your inspirations.

    I have been steaming veggies exclusively for decades. Have found butter, black pepper and Za'Atar is all I've needed to make them fabulous. The concept of steaming over stock is one I'm gonna' try this week. I also steam chicken fillets with the veggies - one of my quick simple staples all done in twenty minutes while I'm havin' a shower or a beer. I should point out I use just the one vessel - a two tier stainless steamer - chicken in the bottom tier, veggies above, 15ml of water in the pan. Your carrots look devine - I love beetroot and the almonds seem terrific - and have always found steamed pumpkins bland - but loved walnuts with roasted pumpkin - thanks Paula ❤

    If you’re someone who likes cilantro, a great chilled side dish for warmer weather is slightly steamed carrots (still crunchy, just not raw) tossed with a little oil, salt, cumin, and cilantro.

    Love keeping it simple! The microwave is a real time and energy saver for steaming. And frees up a burner if you have a lot of other things going on for dinner.

    Two of my favorite veggies to steam are green beans and asparagus. Luckily, tomorrow is shopping day!

    I am fairly new to the UK (from the Philippines). Love food and I am known to cook well but coming to the UK, I couldn’t (for the life of me) figure out what to cook. Your channel is life-saving!!! Love your chill way and lack of pretension. It encourages creativity but with a marked sense of healthy comfort. Thank you!

    another useful trick for steaming without a steamer is if someone owns a wok, they can put wooden chopsticks in sideways, so they can place a bowl with the food to steam on the chopsticks to keep it above the boiling water like it's a ledge. then you just put a lid on to trap the steam.

    Omg that spoon peeling hack is a game changer!!! I soft boiled some eggs to marinade in soy sauce and they all fell apart when I peeled them. I like to meal prep them every few days, I was thinking that I was destined to hard boil them only because of my soft boiled disaster lol Thanks so much for sharing 💕💕💕 I can’t wait to try the spoon trick!!

    Came to justify my investment in a steamer, subscribed for this lady’s personality. 😂 She’s just so matter of fact and real. “I don’t care if I have purple hands, if someone asks, I’ll just tell them I was chopping beets.” I’m trying to get on this lady’s level. I would have definitely worried unnecessarily about purple hands ❤ That aside, hearing her describe the steamed vegetables and how steaming makes them luxurious, I just realized… I don’t know if I’ve ever had straight steamed vegetables 🤔 steamer effectively justified 🎉

    . Can I steam without added water, just letting the vegs sweat under the heat?

    • @HowToMakeDinner
      @HowToMakeDinner  Год назад

      They need some moisture to create the steam! If you have a steamer basket that’s even better, but I just let them sit in the water a little bit.

    • @explanaparenth5124
      @explanaparenth5124 Год назад +1

      Since vegetables have naturally occurring water already in them-such as onions-steam is produced just by heating them on the stove covered. So, I’d like to better understand why adding water is still necessary. Thank you

    • @HowToMakeDinner
      @HowToMakeDinner  Год назад +1

      @@explanaparenth5124 You’re right, they do! Just not quite enough to create the amount of steam you need. If you put them in a dry pan they will burn and dry out!

    So I though the lady was kind of cute, so I decided to make "nutritional yeast" dressing. um...I didn't know the difference between nutritional yeast & bread yeast. Yeah...they aren't the same. I should have know that something was wrong because the consistency of lady's dressing and my dressing were different despite following the proportions in her recipe. Her dressing was liquid, but my dressing was a poorly-emulsified paste. I added vinegar until my consistency matched her dressing. I justified this action because the lady was approximate with her measurements: "about a teaspoon of miso", "squeeze in some maple syrup", "honey...not very much", "grainy mustard...a fair bit", etc. Although Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is often bakers yeast , & my Chinese friends eat packets of TCM, I was fairly sure I wouldn't die from the nice lady's recipe. Still, I checked Reddit & learned that nutritional yeast & bread yeast are different. Perhaps I am a recluse and am the only one to make this mistake, but I write this comment to inform the viewership.
