I don’t think Taibbi thinks Elon is his buddy. Taibbi in his own words says he has a limited bite at the apple, he’s just trying to finish his investigation before he publicly shits on his source.
What gets me is that he demanded to come on to address the accusation that he was a hypocrite who'd never criticize Elon, and then he refused to criticize Elon, even on stuff that should matter to him based on principle like Elon moderating Twitter to please India's authoritarian PM and Elon's horrible treatment on his employees in all of his companies.. This is so frustrating to listen to, I already had to turn this interview off once already. Taibbi is one of those people who made his entire career steamrolling people with the facts of the situation. He seems unprepared for the issue he threw the gauntlet down on. He looks sycophantic to power. Maybe he's just a better writer than he is anything else... but this is just a horrible showing on his part. Like, the fact that multiple times in this interview, in lieu of responding to a Direct Question he just scoffs about Mehdi Hasan being on MSNBC as if he has doesn't have to respond because he's just a more pure individual or some nonsense. As if attempting to claim the elitist high ground is a good idea.
Exactly my thoughts. And already the first question from Mehdi Hasan about the importance of the twitter files, instead of answering and actually informing the audience about that, Matt Taibbi does the metatalk comment about the setup of the interview by Mehdi Hasan. Awkward.
I will say that Kyle often grants people (in this case Matt) a level of charity that is beyond earned. Like it’s pretty naked what Taibbi is doing and why, but Kyle is still out here steel manning his motives
That’s because Taibbi has a career long level of integrity. The attacks on him currently are just smears, he’s obviously only withholding criticism of his source because he’s in the middle of an investigation. Taibbi doesn’t need to be the one to attack Musk this very second, let him finish his reporting.
From the look of it…working backwards from his own conclusions about which side is doing the most/more dangerous censorship. It’s also amusing how much worse his ability to defend his work is when it’s own such shaky ground as opposed to when he was a more honest actor. It’s just more convincing to pound on the facts than on the table
@@IcarusLime You didn't watch the interview between Hasan and Taibi right? Because the part of him not criticizing Musk was throw away and at the end of the very interview itself. Maybe wait until he’s finished this investigation before you expect him to publicly shit on his source? Everyone else is free to criticize Musk in the meantime, the only reason to pressure Taibbi in particular to do it right this very second is because you want to sabotage the investigation. Kyle and the rest of progressive media got played hard by establishment propaganda into thinking that Musk’s temporary reputation is of more importance than the investigation into the apparatus of state censorship. Gnat brain shit. Enormously disappointing.

They know where the money is. Corporations don't support left-wing anti-corporate journalism. That's why having principles is difficult. People like Greenwald, Dore, Rubin, etc. all just smell where they can make lots of easy money.
I agree with what Kyle is saying but he’s describing his significant other who pretends to be a leftist but literally never criticizes the right and only criticizes Democrats.
What’s so great about Matt’s writing style? Not doubting, just curious. Does anyone recommend any piece in particular that showcases his great style? I’ve read a handful of articles by him but I don’t recall anything that popped out. Certainly not on the level of a Hunter S. Thompson. I haven’t read anything by Sam Harris but I’ve gotta say, the guy is probably the most articulate person I’ve ever heard speak albeit in more of a measured, scientific way. Literary novelists are usually the best writers in regards to style. Too many to name here. I’ve never found myself wowed by the writing style of any journalist, however, with the exception of Hunter S. Thompson.
Actually, Matts writing style is part of his downfall. He is more interested in crafting a good sentence and story than he is in facts. He quit the NY Times because they would not let him use his style. In other words, story is more important to him than news.
I think Taibbi is just a talented writer, his reporting is accurate. As of yet, the most noteworthy errors Medhi’s Comcast funded fact checking team could find were an acronym and a date.
@@IcarusLime That incorrect acronym formed a foundational component of Taibi's argument that the government (CISA) were flagging millions of tweets to be removed by Twitter. In reality, it was the non-government, not for profit, research organisation CIS, who flagged not 22 million, but under 3000 tweets. These were mainly phishing attempts and impersonations, which CIS came upon during their information flow research. Matt's error was not inconsequential - it formed a foundational component of his argument, so much so that he presented this information to congress.
I think Taibbi isn't reporting on the other stuff simply because he doesn't have the time, the Twitter Files are a huge undertaking and there's very few people working on it. The right loves to scream about censorship so they've grappled on to it and have managed to make The Twitter Files about the 2020 general election and nothing else. I think reporting so selectively in this manner just doesn't line up with Taibbi's motives. He understands the Bernie stuff in 2016 because of what happened with him at Rolling Stone. I think to say that he doesn't care about right wing censorship is not accurate, there is just only so much he can focus on at one time and this is what blew up. I guess time will tell though, what he chooses to report on in the future when this dies out will be telling.
This is like challenging Mike Tyson for a boxing match, he accepting it, then showing up to boxing match & somehow acting like you don’t really care for Mike Tyson & act surprised when you’re asked to go up & fight Mike. Dude you challenged him to invite you on the show to talk about 1 specific topic!! The 1 thing you can NOT do is go unprepared on THAT topic. He acted like how dare Mehdi even ask him about the Modi-Elon issue. That’s not a gottacha!
Taibbi's response to Hasan's criticism about copying up to Ted Cruz - upping the critical ante by rightfully calling him out for the POS he is - proves all the more how cynical his position on Elon is. He proclaims "its America, we don't have to agree with everyone on everything" but refuses to condemn Musk for the BS that should be reeks of access journalism that everyone has rightfully raised.
You know what? I took absolutely no pleasure in seeing someone who has done truly great, essential, take-no-prisoners journalism in the past now in full self-deception mode, getting hammered and pilloried (rightly). But oh man, would I LOVE to see Mehdi take a crack at Jimmy Dore. I might die from an overdose of schadenfreude, is the only problem.
I would take great pleasure in Jimmy Dore getting absolutely destroyed by Medhi Hassan. One can only dream. Jimmy is only interested in grifting to his new conservative audience in Tucker Carlson.

His credibility was already suspect before the interview but he lost all his credibly in the interview. And for what?
Come on Kyle, you really don't need to cover Taibbi's ass with that "semi-noble journalistic opportunism" fig leaf. I used to be a huge fan of the guy, but clearly he's a grifter now. I hope he can mend his ways after getting burned, but I'm not too hopeful.
Kyle Kyle Kyle....you sound a like a Democratic senator who absolutely missed the point. The reason Matt feels strongly on this is not for free speech. No it's definitely worse than nothing. No propaganda is better than rich-man propaganda. Better to be uninformed than to be 'informed' by this sham they call news.
Agreed. Velshi also will be great. But Mehdi will be superb in that role. If Chris Wallace had a say today on who should succeed him, he’d pick Mehdi. I’m sure Rashida is seriously considering this but might not want to ruffle feathers until after the 24’ elections.
Kyle needs to call out Krystal And Saagar for giving Taibbi a softball interview after the congressional hearing. we won't hear jack from Saagar and Krystal except maybe to defend Taibbi after he got demolished.
I hope Krystal watches this segment. She cherry picks stories she doesn't want to cover, like this one, because of personal bias. Matt may be a nice guy and have written some good stories, but has obviously sold out for access. The same thing that cable news does.
The best part of this interview was when Matt Taibbi pretended to know nothing about the India story when the tweet about that very story was what spurred the twitter exchange between these two and eventually go them to be on the show together. Matt is a fraud.

Kyle has gone on record saying that they are on good terms, and it's awkward for him to criticize Joe. As if attempting to claim the elitist high ground is a good idea.
Because that's what his new 'audience' wants - and it's extremely telling about the substance of what he writes...
Exactly my thoughts. And already the first question from Mehdi Hasan about the importance of the twitter files, instead of answering and actually informing the audience about that, Matt Taibbi does the metatalk comment about the setup of the interview by Mehdi Hasan. Awkward.
Tiabbi has clearly lost his way. If people don’t see you as principled, why should they ever take you seriously as a reporter?
I will say that Kyle often grants people (in this case Matt) a level of charity that is beyond earned. Like it’s pretty naked what Taibbi is doing and why, but Kyle is still out here steel manning his motives
That’s because Taibbi has a career long level of integrity. The attacks on him currently are just smears, he’s obviously only withholding criticism of his source because he’s in the middle of an investigation. Taibbi doesn’t need to be the one to attack Musk this very second, let him finish his reporting.
What's he doing then?
From the look of it…working backwards from his own conclusions about which side is doing the most/more dangerous censorship. It’s just more convincing to pound on the facts than on the table

Maybe wait until he’s finished this investigation before you expect him to publicly shit on his source? Everyone else is free to criticize Musk in the meantime, the only reason to pressure Taibbi in particular to do it right this very second is because you want to sabotage the investigation.

I was hoping Kyle would cover this. I'm glad someone did this to Taibbi. The Twitter files were mostly bullshit and not enough people were pointing it out.
I can't believe Matt actually asked to be on the show to share his take on the India story and then said "I'd have to read it before I comment". What the actual fuck. His credibility was already suspect before the interview but he lost all his credibly in the interview. And for what?
"Mostly bullshit" how so?
Can you elaborate?
Mehdi is correct. It is access journalism. Matt seems like he’s surprised to be there.
THIS is why I still follow Kyle after all this time. He's calling straight shots. I may not always agree with him but he's one honest dude.
Just lol
Come on Kyle, you really don't need to cover Taibbi's ass with that "semi-noble journalistic opportunism" fig leaf. I used to be a huge fan of the guy, but clearly he's a grifter now. I hope he can mend his ways after getting burned, but I'm not too hopeful.
Kyle Kyle Kyle....you sound a like a Democratic senator who absolutely missed the point. The reason Matt feels strongly on this is not for free speech. Though he thinks that's important, this is not a story about that. This is a story about GOVERNMENT INTERFERING and CENSORSORING private companies and citizens' speech. This has no relationship to Elon censoring speech on his own platform. You 100% missed the mark.
Then why did he only include Trump's government doing so as an afterthought
It’s so clear when one person in a debate is woefully underprepared and flailing. And in a debate with Medhi, it’s invariably the other person
Of course, Kyle ignored the first half of the interview to satisfy his own premise.
Elons move on Taibbi in spite of him defending Elon reminds me of Jimmy Dores move on Kyle, when Kyle defended Jimmy Dore. Hmm funny how that works.
Taibbi what happened to you. Last time I checked on you, you were destroying HSBC Bank
When in doubt most of the time its about money, money, money ...
You need to watch the whole thing. It is GOLD.
For everyone that gives MSNBC a hard time they are definitely the best cable network by far for having Medhi Hasan alone, and I know cable network is a pretty low bar but still, it’s better than nothing
I've notice that they've improved recently. Surprisingly, they have even let Mehdi talk about Palestine.
MSNBC is the worst and recently censored Trump.
No it's definitely worse than nothing. No propaganda is better than rich-man propaganda. Better to be uninformed than to be 'informed' by this sham they call news.
Mehdi Hasan is the only person who can make meet the press relevant again. He and David Dayen are the best journalists in the country
Agreed. Velshi also will be great. But Mehdi will be superb in that role. If Chris Wallace had a say today on who should succeed him, he’d pick Mehdi. I’m sure Rashida is seriously considering this but might not want to ruffle feathers until after the 24’ elections.
@@ibeezisi3847, Hasan is hot garbage and so is Velshi.
Ask me about it, I'll tell you why.
He’s not even a nice guy, just read some of the accounts of his former co-workers and collaborators. Dude has some serious issues.
The best part of this interview was when Matt Taibbi pretended to know nothing about the India story when the tweet about that very story was what spurred the twitter exchange between these two and eventually go them to be on the show together. Matt is a fraud.
Kyle and Mehdi are way too hard on a real journalist on this. Neither of them have the journalistic contributions to be barking him down like this. Side note: does he have infinite time and have to write every serious piece that can be written or can mehdi or Kyle write some instead of focusing on online hot takes. It takes longer to be combing through data and put your Matt Taibbi name behind your reports than to do something still very valuable but different like online commentary. They are hot taking him unfairly for their viewcounts and should be ashamed
Mehdi Hasan was hot, Matt Taibbi not so hot
Mehdi takes corporate money. Sucks on corporate balls. Mehdi tries to character assassinate a man, Matt, for revealing that the government is propagandizing the population on a systematic scale. And you think he's the good one. Shame.
