Same! My husband and I are 55 and we mute the adverts, if we haven’t DVR’d it, to do the Dolly Madison adverts! 😂😂 I do recall watching as a lass and wondering why anyone would just invite themselves to anything, let alone others. Very rude of Peppermint Patty! As our kids were growing, they hit the age that I was at my realisation. They said ‘that’s rather rude of her!’! We laughed.
I love the part where Snoopy wrestles the chair. I also love that Snoopy served the kids toast, popcorn, jellybeans, etc. and when they were gone he pulls out a full roasted turkey dinner with all the trimmings for himself and Woodstock, and pumpkin pie to boot.
It was only a few years ago I realised something about the end. Snoopy and Woodstock are eating Turkey. And a Bird is eating Bird. And why are they eating non traditional trimmings? They have new potatoes and carrots and some other kind of vegetable. Why didn't Snoopy fix Mashed potatoes and gravy and Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce? And that Pumpkin Pie with whipped cream looked fantastic.
My favorite memories of this special were when they were actually shown on air, for free, on TV. Not through streaming, not through cable, just good old fashion analog. Have to sift through my dvds and vhs tapes. I'm thankful I have those because I can't afford cable or streaming😑
It's amazing how those old TV days brought us together! There's something special about watching memories unfold on analog. Keep those VHS tapes safe-they're a treasure!
At the beginning of this episode, I remember Sally saying "it's Thanksgiving and I haven't even ate all my Halloween candy". How did she have any candy? She waited in the pumpkin patch all night with Linus on Halloween waiting for The Great Pumpkin.
Ah, the mysteries of the Peanuts universe! Perhaps her parents felt bad that she got duped by Linus and bought her a bunch... or they just gave her Charlie Browns.
@@rebeccablueheart I think that was Lucy that asked for a second treat for her "blockhead brother" who was sitting in a pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin.
And *_Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!_* A hilarious and warm-hearted Thanksgiving classic from 1987. Written, produced, and directed by the king of 1980s movies, the late, great John Hughes.
Do you know why the Peanuts characters never grow up to be adults? Because all of their dialogue would consist of "Wa-wa-waaa. Waa wa-wa waa wa wa waaa ..." 😅😅😅
My Daughter is having “A Charlie Brown Friendsgiving” at College and the menu consists of: Toast, pretzel sticks, popcorn, jelly beans and ice cream parfait 🦃
Toast, pretzel sticks, and jelly beans? Looks like it's a gourmet feast fit for the Peanuts gang! Just don’t forget the Snoopy dance to go with it! Oh, and they may want to wrestle some lawn chairs.
Yeah I saw that several years ago a restaurant out in Vegas did this as a gag near Thanksgiving. You had to call in a reservation for it and it was booked. This caught on and I see numerous others have done it now as well.
In the comics, girls with crushes on Charlie Brown never call him Charlie Brown. Peppermint Patty calls him Chuck, Marcie calls him Charles, and that girl at camp he held hands with called him Brownie Charles.
@bobbyk9815 False! In the comics,Patty (not peppermint), Violet and Lucy all have crushes on him, but just call him Charlie Brown, so don't try to speak on things you have no idea what you are talking about.

@@GaryTongue-zn5di Lucy's crush is on Schroeder, and Patty has a secret crush on Pigpen (Though she is Charlie Brown's oldest friend and has been around as long as Charlie himself). Violet did have a crush on Charlie Brown at one time, but that changed after Charlie pushed her off her tricycle and threw things at her. After that, she became attached to Shermy
Lucy's Crush on Schroeder is more of a "Dominate and Control him" but her Mild Crush on Charlie Brown is why she calls him his full name and Emasculates him.
3:35 I never really thought anything of it! I mostly learned a lot of things here. 1. Do not invite yourself over for dinner. 2. If you do get invited and the Thanksgiving menu is not what you expect, don't complain about the menu. 3. The true meaning of Thanksgiving.
I showed this show to my international students (high school). It was interesting that the part that they really laughed at was Charlie Brown's "Well... I... uh."
What I learned is HAVE SOME MANNERS! Even if you go to someone else’s house for dinner (Thanksgiving or otherwise) and they’re serving bologna sandwiches and potato chips, you don’t get to make snide remarks. It’s not a restaurant. It’s somebody’s house. This person had the grace to invite you to spend time with him or her at the house where he or she lives, so you should have the grace not to squawk about the menu or the decor or ANYTHING
Every year, my oldest son and his brother recreate the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving meal and watch the movie. They are 30 and 26 years old! They love doing this tradition which just goes to show how timeless Charlie Brown is.
That's such a wonderful tradition! It's amazing how Charlie Brown's story continues to resonate across generations. That dinner too. I can't believe how many people recreate that as well.
Those of us who have been through hard emotional times either have more empathy or less respect for those around us. We either grow into protectors and care givers or we turn into bitter uncaring people. I have chosen the former. I think you did too.
@@PaulVanScott No it does not. I love the Peanuts cartoon since I was a child. It's so different than cartoons of today. There are no sexual innuendo jokes. Just pure good old-fashioned innocent humor. I've always wore my sterling silver charm bracelets with the peanuts gain on many years ages. They're still my favorite loved cartoon. Snoopy is the best. But everyone compares my personality to Lucy. 🤣🫶🏽
This episode also unveils Woodstock's secret. He's a cannibal! In the scene with him and Snoopy eating a turkey Woodstock is just overjoyed to be eating a fellow bird!
Actually I think birds do eat other birds, for instance I heard that owls eat pigeons, and there are decoy owls that can be used to ward off pigeons if you don't want them messing up a place.
@@schizoidboySparrow Hawks prey on sparrows. Go anywhere in Southern Florida & you'll see turkey vultures swooping dn on morning doves, pigeons, sparrows...
I totally noticed that, even as a young child. And I have carried it with me throughout my life. Any time I overextend my welcome, or notice that I have offended or hurt someone in some way, I have found that if I just make a slight sign of respect once or twice, it makes me feel so much better!
I haven't done any research on this, so I could be wrong, but PP always calls him Chuck when she is talking to him directly. In this scene, she is addressing the gang without him there. That could be the reason she uses his regular name.
@dwaneanderson8039 You are completely wrong in every fathomable way! She calls him Chuck period, not just directly to him. She occasionally uses his real name though. How do you fail this much? 🤔
@@PaulVanScott That's exactly the answer. This has nothing to do with growth. She is addressing a group, most of whom don't call him that. I never liked this special as a kid. I always thought Charlie's Brown's inability to address the situation himself left the message that bullying was permissible.
@@Marc010 I wouldn't exactly call what Peppermint Patty did "bullying." I think I would call it an inability to listen when other people are trying to tell her something.
As a child, I didn't even realize that Woodstock eating Turkey at the end was being cannibalistic in a sense.😂 Seriously, I used to feel bad for poor old Charlie Brown. It seemed like Linus and Marcie were the only one's willing to stand up for him.
Yup, I think Peanuts is actually sad and depressing overall. It’s not that funny anyway, and honestly it’s about a kid who is picked on and doesn’t seem to catch much break. I identify with that too much, perhaps. I think it’s all overrated, highly. Both as comics and the programs.
@@theOlLineRebel Nah, the message is Charlie is like his tree, all he needs is a little love. And his friends despite his and their flaws, do love him Love redeems all.
I remember one Thanksgiving, and my grandparents decided to serve beef instead of turkey. Before we went over to their house, my mom had told me not to complain about the menu because it would hurt their feelings. I'm autistic and she knows that I'm not into change.
The Peanuts animated specials are true classics. They get the same amount of laughs from me now as they did during my childhood, for totally different reasons. There are layers to the insight and humor for all ages.
I recall well with heart warming fondness this Charlie Brown classic. Peanuts was my all time favorite comic strip. When I'd heard that Mr. Schulz had passed away, I was heartbroken and even cried a bit. It was like losing a beloved family member who'd been there literally throughout your whole life.
@@PaulVanScott I always found it funny that Patty calls him "Chuck". While Lucy Van Pelt calls him by his Full name Charlie Brown. She's the only girl who does. "Hey Charlie Brown, do you think I'm attractive? Well, I would say that you have a nice face and are decent looking. You BLOCKHEAD! You Don't think I have a Pretty Face?!"
@@Tornado1994 WRONG! Marcie calls PEPPERMINT PATTY "Sir," which annoys her to no end. "Stop calling me 'SIR'!" she's always shouting. (It kind of reminds of the running gag on the "Superman" TV show from the 1950s, where Jimmy Olsen calls "Daily Planet" editor Perry White "Chief," and Mr. White yells back "Don't call me 'Chief'!") With Charlie Brown, on the other hand, Marcie always calls him "Charles," which is appropriate since it's obviously his real first name.
I remember this special. It may have been the first to include Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Franklin. According to an extra on the DVD, a boy voiced Peppermint Patty in this special. The usual questions come up. Sally said that she hadn't eaten all of her Halloween candy. Didn't she spend the night with Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin? Maybe the next year she went trick or treating. Where were the parents during all of this? Most families only own a single toaster. Did they borrow or even steal a few? There are models that can toast four slices at a time. Some might wonder about the time of Grandmother's dinner. But that varies per families. Nowadays all the children might not have gotten to ride in the station wagon. Would there be enough seat belts? Finally, Woodstock helped Snoopy eat the turkey. These specials should be back on network TV. Thankfully I have the DVD. Most of us missed that subtle change with Peppermint Patty. No one else called him Chuck.
It's great to see such a fond memory of this special! The characters really made an impact, and those questions definitely add an interesting layer to the story. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The Thanksgiving special came out a few year's after The Great Pumpkin, so in theory Sally could have gone trick-or-treating prior to the events in this special, but I get where if you were growing up watching these specials as a child the continuity would be off. After all, if you watched this special and The Great Pumpkin, you would be wondering where Sally got all her Halloween candy if she were sitting in the pumpkin patch with Linus. She couldn't have shared any candy with Charlie Brown because he only got rocks. And what did Charlie Brown do to all his neighbors to make sure he only got rocks for trick-or-treating?
@orangehornet57 ....except for the Charlie Brown and Snoopy show (your on Nickelodeon Charlie Brown in reruns) Peppermint Patty was ALWAYS voiced by boys. Not sure about the peanuts movie as I only saw it once.
Now I know that Peppermint Patty's father was called out of town on business which was why she wanted to spend it with Charlie Brown. The things that bother me though is why would her dad have to go on a business trip during Thanksgiving? And were Marcie and Franklin's parents okay with them going over to Charlie Brown's grandmother's house? They could've stayed at home with their own families for the celebration (except for Peppermint Patty).

She only calls Charlie Brown "Chuck" when speaking directly to him (It's her pet name for him). When speaking about him, she always says Charlie Brown. And she does sometimes call him Charlie Brown directly, such as when her team arrives to help his team in baseball and finds that the baseball field has been turned into a garden.
I watched this episode when, it first aired on network TV. This is my favorite cartoon where, Peppermint Patty's love crush on Charlie Brown really get to shine. Hoped what, I had missed was a kiss on the cheek between the two (smile ... smile).
I've seen a lot of times in the strip where Peppermint Patty blames Charlie Brown for anything that goes wrong in her life! In later years, I've been more resentful of her for that!
It's interesting to see how characters evolve in our perceptions over time. Peppermint Patty's dynamic with Charlie Brown definitely raises some eyebrows!
@Ability-King-KK YEZS! Schulz created Peppermint Patty and Marcy solely for the reason to have girls that actually care for Charlie, though in the comics, Lucy, Violet and Patty also all have on and off crushes on him. Sometimes HE is the mean one to them.

That is just a natural trait of women. Many husbands will testify that their wives have become angry at them at some point because of something they watched on tv, (ps. newlywed Guys, if your lady is watching "Lifetime TV or Halmark, don't expect any lovin' tonight) only dreamed about or even a random thought that crossed their mind.
Maybe a breakfast Thanksgiving dinner? No jellybeans (They're out of place), but we could have scrambled eggs, grits, home fries, bacon, ham, and sausage. And English muffins with apple butter and bacon! And plenty of coffee! And as a chaser, bowls of Cinnamon Toast Crunch!
Jellybeans have officially been banned from the breakfast table! But I’m totally on board with bacon and Cinnamon Toast Crunch as the ultimate power couple!
I assumed that since she was speaking to the entire group, she had to talk to them all seriously. So she addressed him by him proper name, not the nickname she only called him.
Thanks for making this video as someone who grew up watching this special and I somehow never thought much of that moment. I thought it was a missed opportunity to air the special on TV for its 50th anniversary last year. Also fun fact the voice of Peppermint Patty Christopher Defaria later went on to be a producer for WB films including the Tom and Jerry Movie which I find to be a hilarious bit of trivia
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It's interesting how certain moments can go unnoticed until someone brings them to light. And that trivia about Christopher DeFaria is fascinating-such a great connection to the world of animation!
That went over my head for many years. Totally missed that and the explanation totally makes sense of Peppermint Pattie's character growth in the special. Awesome catch.
I'm glad the explanation resonated with you! Peppermint Patty's character growth is definitely one of those subtle details that can be easy to overlook.
It’s interesting how our perspectives change as we grow up! Peppermint Patty's feelings for Charlie Brown definitely have a different vibe when viewed through an adult lens.
@@TheNeonRabbit The fact that Marcie always called her "sir" and in this special the part where PP ask Marcie to apologize to Charlie Brown for her and says "you know me I'll just mess things up I'm too brusk and rough" does indeed raise an eyebrow. 😬😬😬😬😬😬
"You never noticed what she did..." There was something I did notice which was weird, because... Near the end of the episode, Patty says to Charlie Brown, "There's enough problems in the world already, Chuck, without these stupid misunderstandings. Let's not play lovers' games, Chuck." Umm.. From what I've read, both Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty are 8 years old! What kind of 8-year-olds talk about "lovers' games"?!
I think, in the comic strip and in Charlie Brown's Cylopedia, PP is a fan of Dustin Hoffman. It might have been used in a movie he appeared in. Her Dad never seemed to be around, so she probably watched some Late Night Movies on TV and caught a few of his, and heard the line.
There's a lot of dialogue in the Peanuts comic strip and TV specials that are adult sounding. That's part of the humor. Little kids spouting grownup talk. For example, from "A Charlie Brown Christmas": Lucy Van Pelt: "I know how you feel about all this Christmas business, getting depressed and all that. It happens to me every year. I never get what I really want. I always get a lot of stupid toys or a bicycle or clothes or something like that." Charlie Brown: "What is it you want?" Lucy Van Pelt: "Real estate."
I've thought about this sort of thing many times over the years. Look at the Simpsons, Sponge Bob Squarepants...probably many other shows. They're written on two levels, child humor that keeps the kids laughing but if you listen a LITTLE BIT CLOSER...adults can be entertained just as well. There's really a certain level of genius(?) involved.
Thank you for this message and insight. I use this holiday special with a writing group that I facilitate. We talk about how the issues and conflicts begin and what added to it. What we found most pervasive is that poor Charlie Brown is a child that suffers from a deep sense of depression and feelings of inferiority, especially during the holidays. This is also evident in the "Charlie Brown Christmas Special" when he feels overwhelmed by the commercialism of the season. He chooses a tree that he feels needs love and attention and is ridiculed for it. It makes me wonder what the creator was trying to tell us through these stories, or are they a reflection of past events in his own childhood? One can only wonder. 🤔
Love that you’re using Charlie Brown to dive into some real talk! It’s wild how a kid’s cartoon can hit so hard, right? Keep up the awesome discussions with your group!
Interesting that Sally was cheering also. Because as sister of Charlie Brown she would have been going to her own grandmother's condo anyway. Unless she was just happy her friends were going.
You make a great point! Sally's enthusiasm definitely raises some questions about her priorities and friendships. It's always fun to think about these character dynamics!
@JillMorgan-b7y FALSE! Niether Charlie Brown nor Sally were invited to their grandma's UNTIL Charlie explained to the grandma their situation. Try to pay better attention next time!
I used to joke with my ex when we were dating about how he had all the cooking skills of Charlie Brown, since all he knew how to make was toast! Anyway, what Peppermint Patty did was beautiful and selfless. It's a great lesson in empathy and friendship. That, and she has a thing for him! Apparently, so does Marcie! This was made evident in A Charlie Brown Valentine, when Patty was making a Valentine for him, and Marcie asked if Patty would include her name, a request she very bluntly refused! 🤣So good! Thanks for the video.
Don't forget that when Charlie Brown calls his grandmother about his unexpected guests, he refers to himself as . .. 'Charlie Brown' ..to his own GRANDMOTHER. Why the full name instead of just 'Charlie'? The only reason I can possibly think of is that would make any sense might be that his grandmother has at least two grandsons named 'Charlie' so Wishy Washy used his full name to differentiate himself from one or more of his other cousins also named 'Charlie'. No character growth for CB or Grandma there
@@tigerlord9302 It wouldn't matter whether it was 'Grandma Brown' or 'Granny X'. Most grandmothers know all their grandkids' first names so the only reason I can imagine him referring to HIMSELF as 'Charlie Brown' would be if he h.ad at least one other cousin named 'Charlie'.
@@cynthiamclellan6745Have you ever sat in one of those old hardwood chairs with the spindles at your back? Your butt will hurt so bad you won't want to get up. Everyone but Franklin' has one. He's got easy access to 2 bowls of popcorn, an ice cream sundae & what appears to be a scone in a plate & he's the only one with an eating utensil! He done real good for himself.
At 4:07 on the subject of deep emotions, the most endearing part of all the Charlie Brown series is in this Thanksgiving episode. At the end where Snoopy and Woodstock share their meal together and that tune is playing... and being outside with the Autumn leaves all around. That moment always takes me back to my childhood and simpler times when I first saw it and we a children didn't have a care in the world. That moment is so touching and nostalgic to me that I get misty eyed. I feel so good every time I watch it. And, please, no comments on Woodstock being a canibal by eating a turkey... some clown always makes a stink about it.
I completely agree! That scene really encapsulates the warmth and nostalgia of childhood. It's amazing how a simple moment can evoke such powerful emotions and memories.
My sister had a bird who they would feed human food as treats once in a while. Not often, but the type of bird she had was officially an "omnivore" in the wild. One of that bird's FAVORITE (human) treat foods was chicken. So evidently it isn't unusual for birds to like to eat other tasty birds.
i remember that show. i have seen it so many times that i caught on to that. back when charles Schulz died i baught a newspaper with the last Charlie brown comic. i actually still have it. he wrote it from the hospital the day before he died. if your a fan you might want to look up the last comic. he wrote a massage at the end. if you got this far. you should resd it.
"We're all invited to Charlie Brown's grandmother's for Thanksgiving Dinner." Maybe Peppermint Patty called him Charlie Brown that one time because she used his name as an adjective to describe who's grandmother she was talking about. And because, to his grandmother, he was Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty referred to him the way his grandmother would which means that Peppermint Patty is showing respect to Charlie Brown's grandmother.🤔
I've seen this special countless times over the years, and I've never noticed Peppermint Patty doing that. I have a very special connection with this particular special because we're the same age. 😄
It's amazing how many little details we can miss, even after watching something multiple times! It’s great to hear you have a special connection with it.
They are doing him a solid. As a kid you always want to be on the side with the most room. I used to fight with my sisters about it and my mom would make us take turns on who got to sit on the side by themselves. More elbow room, more room to put stuff on either side of your plate, you could see everybody else and they could see you the best. Hey Schroeder and Lucy weren't invited at all.
Kinda reminds me how in the peanuts special that came out in the same year as this one "There's no time for love, Charlie Brown" peppermint patty insulted Charlie Brown and she felt bad, then she tells Marcie on her school bus "I don't know what you can do for Charlie Brown but I sure know what you can do for me" and it was just for Marcie to stop calling her sir which was a funny moment in that special.
Ah, the timeless struggle of Peppermint Patty-fighting for her identity while managing Charlie Brown's insecurities! Classic Peanuts humor at its finest!
I was thinking the twist ending of it was going to be mentioned, and that Snoopy played them all with that prank of a meal so he and Woodstock could enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving goodies themselves!
That's an interesting take! Snoopy and Woodstock definitely have a knack for mischief, and it would be hilarious to see them pulling off a Thanksgiving prank like that! Maybe they did,
one thing I could never stand about Peppermint Patty in ANY of the Charlie Brown shows is that she doesn't listen. She puts people on the spot. She demands things, has unrealistic expectations and gets angry when people don't give her what she expected. Thing is,if she actually gave people a chance to get a word in,they would tell her they aren't able/capable of doing what she wants. If I knew someone like her,she wouldn't be someone who I would even talk to. Thankfully we have cellphones with caller ID these days. Someone like her would drive me crazy
@MissyFaith1971 we had a girl like her in our inner city Ministry some years back. Really good leader and we tried to encourage that in her but she definitely was bossy. Like Peppermint Patty she had no mother, her mother died when she was a toddler. Once she trusted Christ as her savior you could see the change in her. She never said what but you could tell when we had prayer time there were times when she definitely was quiet longer with her head bowed like she was giving some things over to God. Just admitting she needed the help was the key and that's something Peppermint Patty doesn't do. I remember one time in class our director was teaching something, and this was after this girl had trusted Christ to save her, and she just blurted out that she had no idea what our director was talking about. But she said it politely and like she wanted to know, and our director could sometimes get a little wordy and not think about his audience if he wasn't careful. This girl also had a lot of hidden anxieties that Peppermint Patty probably has, and that's why she was like that. I think in dealing with a girl like Peppermint Patty the key is to show her that it's okay if she's not perfect and that it's okay to ask for help. I think the fact I have physical handicaps and did so much with the ministry, yet I was always humble, helped her a lot too because she saw an example of someone who was probably like what she saw herself as. Even though she didn't have physical problems, mentally she was quite insecure. I think Peppermint Patty is the same way.
She may be stubborn and doesn't listen but Lucy is meaner than her. At least Peppermint Patty learns and does try to make right after she wrongs a person.😁
@@angelalong6740Agreed, that was one of the things with that girl I mentioned in our inner city ministry also, and probably one of the reasons it was so easy for her to realize her need for Christ as her savior. Like her, I believe Peppermint Patty is not as intentional about quite a few of the rude things she does - unlike Lucy.
I have to point out something else a little weird in the clip. Why is Sally there? Wouldn't she have already been invited to her own grandmother's house for Thanksgiving?
@@PaulVanScott - Lucy did her thing where she pulled the football away from Charlie Brown in the cold open. Other than that, she wasn't really important to the show.
I thought the popcorn and toast meal was to happen BEFORE the Browns went to grandma's house, so of course Sally was still there! Clearly, his parents didn't go on ahead because who was driving the car they eventually were riding in? I assumed it was CB's parents!
They have this dinner earlier in the day because of Peppermint Patty inviting herself to the dinner with his family, then later they leave for his grandparents house at the end of the special.
We've had Charley Brown Thanksgiving since my son was 2. He's 15 and still insists we have it. He says it's something he plans on carrying on with his family someday. ❤😢❤
It's wonderful to hear that your son values those cherished traditions! It's amazing how certain moments can create lasting memories that we want to pass on.
The other thing you didn't cover is : the next problem is that Marcie does by inviting not just herself but the whole gang to someone else's home for a meal. Not really a nice thing to do.
A softer side... and a sweeter side. Patty truly did love him. BTW, doesn't Marcie usually call him 'Chuck' too? In that peacemaking scene, she too calls him 'Charlie Brown'!
Absolutely! Patty's affection for Charlie Brown is truly heartwarming, and you're right-Marcie does have a soft spot for calling him 'Chuck too. That might be because she always does what PP does lol.
I watched this show numerous times, and I never noticed that. Wow, nice observation ! new subscriber here now. I'm going to binge watch your channel. U have an awesome voice, btw
Never as great as the Christmas or Halloween special, but still fun enough! BTW, my dad caught it right away on the original airing and others over the years have also agreed that "Woodstock is a cannibal" for eating turkey in the end! Haha! I've also heard that the reason the singing in the car sounds so bad was that they weren't able to gather the cast of kids at the same time again to record it and had to settle on mixing it later!
Haha, Woodstock definitely took "Thanksgiving dinner" to a whole new level! Who knew he was so hungry for some turkey? Next time, let’s just hope he doesn't invite any of his other bird buddies!
@@PaulVanScott I once had a book on the life of Charles Schulz and his "Peanuts" creation; virtually all of the characters are explained as being taken right out of real life individuals. Snoopy (Snupi) was Schulz's pet back in childhood, as well as several friends like Lucy and Linus.
I've always wondered why Snoopy got excited about that ? And also why did he not share his turkey dinner ! ? ! 😂 And yes I've watched it Every year since it first aired !
Right? Snoopy is such a character! He was probably happy they were all going to Grandmas so he could break out his turkey spread. I guess some things are better left a mystery, like why he never shared that delicious feast!
Not to be weird, but I heard the “T” pronounced in Mr. Schulz’s last name by the creator of this video. Maybe one of my greatest discoveries about Peanuts is when I realized it’s Charles Schulz, not Schultz.
Funny, I often mix up the somewhat similar sounding name of leader of the band Boston. I don't know why, but in the sidebar of recommended videos is, indeed, a video about the band. None of the other suggested videos have anything to do with the band and seem related to what I've watched recently.
Better late than never, right? Actually I just started my channel in June lol. It's like finding that last piece of pizza in the fridge-totally worth it! Welcome !
It's interesting how revisiting these classics can reveal new layers to the characters! Maybe Peppermint Patty has more depth than we often give her credit for.
@@PaulVanScott Every good couple is a couple of puzzle pieces that just fit right together. Patty is kinda eccentric, but Charlie would have the patience and vision to see her value. In turn, she recognized Charlie's virtues of loyalty and determination. That would be the basis of a very good, long marriage.
Peppermint Patty revealed herself as a real b-word in this special. She demands that Charlie Brown make a Thanksgiving feast for her, provides no money, no help, nothing. Then complains at what she receives. Snoopy isn't much better. At the end he pulls out an entire roast turkey that he COULD have served to the guests, since there was DEFINITELY more than he and Woostock would be able to consume.
Interesting theory, but the way I take it is this. When PP talks to Charlie Brown, she calls him Chuck. It's her name for him. But if she's referring to him to other people, she calls him Charlie Brown, since the others know him as Charlie Brown, and not Chuck. On a side note, I've never liked the actress's voicework for this line. It was completely "off."
Totally feel you on that! It’s like she’s being all casual with Chuck but then goes all formal when talking to others. And yeah, that voice just didn’t vibe, right?
@alman54 Why do people in the comments section keep saying this? This is completely false and disproven simply by watching Race for Your life Charlie Brown, she addresses him to others as Chuck. They know who Chuck is. Chuck is a nickname for Charles as is Charlie. This is a common thing and not unique to the Charlie Brown world.
I'm confused by Snoopy and Woodstock cheering about the news. And that selfish dog and bird kept their proper Thanksgiving feast secret from the children.
@@PaulVanScott Another fun fact: Who is the one "regular/main character" that was a full-grown adult in Peanuts? Snoopy was! He was, is and always will be the ONLY adult character in Peanuts! And because of that, he had adult perspectives on the kids, as well as adult aspirations, including, but not exclusive to, novelist. And his access to Turkey and the fixings probably had alot to do with his bartering on the black market with other adult dogs who "stole" turkey from their own masters', or other unsuspecting households. I know, i know, I think too much about this stuff!
Not to be crude, but I seriously considered that Marcie was that way. Not Patty. Patty was just an aggressive tomboy (who really crushed on "Chuck") raised by her single dad. In my mind Marcie was attracted to Patty because she [Patty] was a rather masculine female. Yeah, it sounds crude and borderline offensive, but that's what went through my head. (of course, I am the guy who first came up with the idea that Batman dressed Robin in bright colors because any villain who shot at them would aim for the kid first...)
I never picked up on that in all the years I've been watching it. It could be like the Thomas The Tank Engine universe, the UK version anyway. Sir Topham Hatt is called "The Fat Controller" when he's not around, but is called "Sir Topham Hatt" when being spoken to directly. Peppermint Patty most likely calls Charlie Brown "Chuck" when speaking to him directly, but calls him "Charlie Brown" in more formal settings.
I just always thought "chuck" was a term of endearment Patti gave to Charlie Brown, like a familiar friend would. I never thought it was less respectful, maybe more if you think about it.
That's an interesting perspective! It really shows how terms of endearment can vary in meaning depending on the context and the relationship between characters.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Peanuts really do have a fascinating history and depth that many people overlook..... either that or I'm reading waaaay too much into nothing lol.
I think the simpler answer to why she says Charlie Brown’s grandmother’s house instead of Chuck’s Grandmother’s house is because Chuck is her pet name for Charlie Brown that she only uses on him. If she had all this character development & what not why did she immediately go back to calling him Chuck come Christmas for that special? A bigger question is what is he always referred to by his full name? He’s never just called Charlie, but everybody else is Linus, Sally, Lucy, Franklin… even Peppermint Patty isn’t her full name I don’t think. Charlie Brown calling himself Chuck IS pretty funny and I think this has always been my big sister’s favorite of these specials. Not sure if we she saw the premier in ‘73 I would have been 2. But we watched it every year growing up and she still watches it every year I know.
You bring up some interesting points! The dynamics of those names really reflect the relationships between the characters. It's fascinating how even small details can reveal so much about their connections!
@ I know the years they came out… but as far as what her character is doing in Peanuts, Christmas comes AFTER Thanksgiving (unless you assume it was the following Thanksgiving) and the order you watch them in each year is Thanksgiving then Christmas. The characters never age, everything that happens to them happens when they are these same age little kids. Peppermint Patty isn’t seven years older at this Thanksgiving than she was during the Christmas Special. 😵💫 It’s not a continuity issue like which order you watch Star Wars in or something. I’m just saying I think she calls Charlie Brown Chuck when she is talking to HIM but I’m not going through fifty years of comics to see how often she does that vs calling him by his full name.
Another observation was Lucy was in the beginning holding the football, but never reappeared even to go with the other kids to Charlie Brown’s Grandmas house..
It has nothing to do with racism. Franklin isn't given less food or told he can't go to Charlie Brown's Grandma's house. Plus, he has plenty of elbow room for himself, while Charlie Brown is squashed between two girls
They are doing him a solid. As a kid you always want to be on the side with the most room. I used to fight with my sisters about it and my mom would make us take turns on who got to sit on the side by themselves. More elbow room, more room to put stuff on either side of your plate, you could see everybody else and they could see you the best.
Too many people read too far into, especially those looking for conflict. Back then there wasn't any BS in Clarles Shulz world. IF there was there wouldn't be any Franklin. 🤘👍❤
Well, I've seen that special several times, but never noticed that she called him Charlie Brown. I guess I got Chuck ground into my head so much, I never noticed. Something that I noticed in a Boy Named Charlie Brown, was Snoopy walking on all fours. He does this during the scene where Linus and Charlie are going over the I before e, except after c. He is in the door way, watching the 2 of them and then walks on all fours to join them to play the jaw harp, that comes out of no where. Amazing. Thanks for your observation.
Thank you for sharing your observations! It’s always fun to connect with fellow fans who notice the little details that make these specials so special. Your insights are much appreciated! I'm definitely going to check out Snoopy on all fours. Thanks.
It’s a story about how to treat people. I have read the book as a kid everyday in between Halloween and Thanksgiving for many years. I also have it on video and watch it it every year more than once!
Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s wonderful to know that the message resonates with you so deeply and has become a cherished part of your yearly traditions.

Nice video, took me way back to when we would wait an entire year just to see these specials. BTW, anyone ever tell you that you sound like Casey Kasem? Another fond holiday memory...
I'm glad you liked the video. While no one has ever directly said to me I sound like Casey Kasem , I do an impression of him sometimes that I think is pretty good lol. Maybe it comes from the fact we both have extensive backgrounds in radio. I was a DJ for over 25 years. And yes, I used to love listening to his countdown every weekend as a kid.
I still watch the Charlie Brown specials and I'm 55
At 55, you've officially earned the right to watch them with a side of popcorn and a cozy blanket-it's a Charlie Brown party!
We laughed.
Same here! Nearly the same age too!
Church!
Nostalgia now, enjoy. I'm 72 years old and like Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer that first aired on TV in 1964.
I love the part where Snoopy wrestles the chair. I also love that Snoopy served the kids toast, popcorn, jellybeans, etc. and when they were gone he pulls out a full roasted turkey dinner with all the trimmings for himself and Woodstock, and pumpkin pie to boot.
Snoopy really knows how to throw a party! Those food choices are just classic Snoopy.
That’s my favorite as well! 😂I’m nearly 60 years old and I talk about it every year and can’t wait to watch it.
If Woodstock eats turkey, wouldn't that be cannibalism? 🤔
Well, birds of prey are known to hunt and eat smaller birds in the wild. Maybe Woodstock is a tiny hawk :)
That “Little Birdie” song has lived in my head for 50 years.
It's amazing how certain songs can stick with us for so long! That little birdie really knows how to make an impression.

Charlie Brown asked for a second treat for his stupid sister, as I recall

It's interesting how nicknames can show the different dynamics in relationships! Each girl has her own unique way of connecting with Charlie.

2. If you do get invited and the Thanksgiving menu is not what you expect, don't complain about the menu.
3. The true meaning of Thanksgiving.
Haha, so true! Just remember Patty, if the turkey (or toast) isn’t to your liking, you can always bring your own sandwich next time!
This episode also unveils Woodstock's secret. He's a cannibal! In the scene with him and Snoopy eating a turkey Woodstock is just overjoyed to be eating a fellow bird!
Lol yeah exactly. I wasn't even sure how to address that...or if I should. I'm chalking it up to Woodstock being clueless.
That’s just about as odd as a human being eating another mammal
Actually I think birds do eat other birds, for instance I heard that owls eat pigeons, and there are decoy owls that can be used to ward off pigeons if you don't want them messing up a place.

Peanuts was my all time favorite comic strip.
When I'd heard that Mr. Schulz had passed away, I was heartbroken and even cried a bit.
It was like losing a beloved family member who'd been there literally throughout your whole life.
It's amazing how much of an impact Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang have had on so many of us. Schulz truly created a legacy that feels like family.

WRONG!
White yells back "Don't call me 'Chief'!")
With Charlie Brown, on the other hand, Marcie always calls him "Charles," which is appropriate since it's obviously his real first name.
You’re asking about seatbelts? In 1973?
@orangehornet57
....except for the Charlie Brown and Snoopy show (your on Nickelodeon Charlie Brown in reruns) Peppermint Patty was ALWAYS voiced by boys.
You’ve really captured the essence of their relationship! It’s interesting how those little pet names bring such depth to their interactions.
This is the answer I was about to give. But you already said it.

I watched this episode when, it first aired on network TV. This is my favorite cartoon where, Peppermint Patty's love crush on Charlie Brown really get to shine. Hoped what, I had missed was a kiss on the cheek between the two (smile ... smile).
A cheek kiss would have been a game-changer! Maybe they were just waiting for the right moment-like when Charlie finally gets his kite to fly!
That makes absolutely no sense, considering Peppermint Patty is in love with Charlie Brown.
@Ability-King-KK
YEZS!

There was something I did notice which was weird, because...
Near the end of the episode, Patty says to Charlie Brown, "There's enough problems in the world already, Chuck, without these stupid misunderstandings. Let's not play lovers' games, Chuck."
Umm.. From what I've read, both Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty are 8 years old!
What kind of 8-year-olds talk about "lovers' games"?!
She probably heard it somewhere and dind't know exactly what it meant but yeah, weird, good catch.
For example, from "A Charlie Brown Christmas":
Lucy Van Pelt: "I know how you feel about all this Christmas business, getting depressed and all that. It happens to me every year. I never get what I really want. I always get a lot of stupid toys or a bicycle or clothes or something like that."
Charlie Brown: "What is it you want?"
Lucy Van Pelt: "Real estate."
Also in the Christmas special when Lucy says "everyone knows Christmas is run by a big Eastern Syndicate"

Haha, love it! Who knew Charlie Brown could spark such deep thoughts about friendships and crushes? Thanks for watching!
No character growth for CB or Grandma there
Ah, the classic case of "Charlie Brown vs. the other Charlies." Perhaps he wanted to ensure Grandma knew it was the 'perpetually sad' one on the line!
@@PaulVanScott It could be just because everybody always calls him Charlie Brown. As best as I can remember, nobody ever calls him just Charlie.
Maybe it was his maternal grandmother so he was just specifying who he was? Or does that count as what you said?
@@dwaneanderson8039 Lucy once DID call him just 'Charlie' in one of the specials (IIRC, the Christmas special).
One thing I'm glad. They finally put Franklin in there. Cuz remember Franklin they put them on the other side
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Franklin definitely has a special place in many fans' hearts, and it’s awesome to see him getting more spotlight.
But they put poor Franklin in that crazy accident -prone chair, sitting alone on the opposite side of the table!
@@cynthiamclellan6745Have you ever sat in one of those old hardwood chairs with the spindles at your back? Your butt will hurt so bad you won't want to get up. Everyone but Franklin' has one. Franklin's chair is relaxed, reclined ever so gently with soft cloth for his rump & his back.
*cannibal
@michaelpalmieri7335 Thanks, I fixed the spelling error. I R an En-ga-neer... words I don't use every day are likely to be spelled incorrectly.
Ha ha lots of birds are canibals
My favorite Charlie Brown special!
A person of refined taste, I see! Charlie Brown always manages to teach us life lessons, even if he can't kick that football!
i remember that show. i have seen it so many times that i caught on to that. back when charles Schulz died i baught a newspaper with the last Charlie brown comic. i actually still have it. he wrote it from the hospital the day before he died. if your a fan you might want to look up the last comic. he wrote a massage at the end. if you got this far. you should resd it.
It's amazing how much impact those characters had on our lives! The last comic is definitely a poignant read. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Snoopy kept all the good stuff for him and woodstock LOL
I always tell myself that that happens later in the day and the grandmother sent it back for them.
Yeah that makes at least as much sense as anything I could come up with.
@@PaulVanScott 🤣 Aw, thanks.😊
I've seen this special countless times over the years, and I've never noticed Peppermint Patty doing that. I have a very special connection with this particular special because we're the same age. 😄
It's amazing how many little details we can miss, even after watching something multiple times! It’s great to hear you have a special connection with it.
@Mugwumps-dh1si You're absolutely correct about the little details we can miss at times. I agree wholeheartedly, sir.
4:03 - How come no one is sitting with Franklin?
They are doing him a solid. As a kid you always want to be on the side with the most room. I used to fight with my sisters about it and my mom would make us take turns on who got to sit on the side by themselves. More elbow room, more room to put stuff on either side of your plate, you could see everybody else and they could see you the best. Hey Schroeder and Lucy weren't invited at all.
I think we all know why 💔
Because Charles Schulz took a chance by putting him at the table in the first place. As one commenter said, “you know why.”
This was a wonderful video, I appreciate the job you did.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Your support means a lot!
Right? If Peppermint Patty had a smartphone, her contact name would probably be “DO NOT ANSWER!” 😂 She’d definitely be the queen of missed calls!
She may be stubborn and doesn't listen but Lucy is meaner than her. At least Peppermint Patty learns and does try to make right after she wrongs a person.😁
@@angelalong6740yes, she isn’t mean to”Chuck”. Lucy is the worst but again, most of the characters are pretty bad.
Peppermint patty’s crazy! That was a great last minute Thanksgiving spread snoopy put together! Not to mention that delicious ice cream sundae!
Absolutely! Snoopy always knows how to save the day with his creative spreads and delicious treats!
I have to point out something else a little weird in the clip. Why is Sally there? Wouldn't she have already been invited to her own grandmother's house for Thanksgiving?
Interesting observation. Nice. Also where was Lucy? I have a video coming up this month about that too.
@@PaulVanScott - Lucy did her thing where she pulled the football away from Charlie Brown in the cold open. Other than that, she wasn't really important to the show.
Right but her brother was there and she is usually with the bunch.
Ah, Marcie's the type to treat someone else's home like an all-you-can-eat buffet, huh? Definitely a delicate balance to strike!
@@bev4828
What the hell are you on about? Marcie never does this! It's the grandma that invited them!
I always assumed Patty had a crush on Charlie Brown and calling him Chuck was her special name for him, not a dismissive sign of disrespect.
It's interesting how different interpretations can change our understanding of characters! Patty and Charlie Brown definitely have a unique dynamic.
Marcie usually calls him "Charles", mainly because she's more polite and proper compared to Peppermint Patty.
I love thanksgiving toast. Its the best part of the whole feast. 😂
Thanksgiving toast truly does bring everyone together and adds a special touch to the feast! What's your favorite way to prepare it?
To Paul Van Scott:
Please do a review of the Charlie Brown TV special called:
Why Charlie Brown? Why?
It's about Linus's friend that has Leukemia.
That's a great idea. A lot of people don't know too much about those second tier specials.
I watched this show numerous times, and I never noticed that. Wow, nice observation ! new subscriber here now. I'm going to binge watch your channel. U have an awesome voice, btw
I really appreciate your support! It means a lot to have you as a new subscriber. I'm glad you enjoyed the observation-happy watching!
I caught that some years ago 😂😂😂😂
Smaller birds will scavange Thanksgiving turkey leftovers if given the opportunity.
And I read Peanuts comics. And I never knew poor Peppermint Patty only had her father. Her mother had died. And she was alone a lot.
Right? I always thought her biggest struggle was just getting Chuck to notice her! Who knew there was a whole backstory of parental drama going on?
Nah, Snoopy probably slaved over that Turkey all morning. Besides, no one asked.
Charlie Brown is my all-time favorite.
Charlie Brown really has a special place in the hearts of many! He’s such a relatable character.
Not to be weird, but I heard the “T” pronounced in Mr. Schulz’s last name by the creator of this video. Maybe one of my greatest discoveries about Peanuts is when I realized it’s Charles Schulz, not Schultz.
Yeah that was me. I screwed up. Force of habit. Growing up I always thought it had a T in it. Hopefully I'll get it right next time.

Welcome !
Let's not forget that Peppermint Patty comes from the hard and rough side of town, And She probably bullies her way just to get by.
That's an interesting perspective! Peppermint Patty definitely has a tough exterior, and her background adds depth to her character.
In all the years I've seen this special, I never once thought about that. Looks like Peppermint Patty has a softer side after all.
It's interesting how revisiting these classics can reveal new layers to the characters! Maybe Peppermint Patty has more depth than we often give her credit for.
We all know Patty eventually married Charlie Brown.
Haha, totally! Can you picture their life together? Just a couple of misfits making it work! Actually I know couples with that dynamic.
What! No marriage to Marcie? That's a bummer!
@@ThomasSellers I know. There are all sorts of hints Marcie has a crush on Charlie too!
@@hemaccabe4292 She had a crush on Peppermint Patty.
You make a great point! It’s interesting to see how some characters can be so demanding while others seem to have a hidden stash of goodies.
Peppermint Patty is voiced a male voice actor for the Thanksgiving episode. That's probably why it sounded off.
@alman54
Why do people in the comments section keep saying this? This is completely false and disproven simply by watching Race for Your life Charlie Brown, she addresses him to others as Chuck. They know who Chuck is. Chuck is a nickname for Charles as is Charlie. This is a common thing and not unique to the Charlie Brown world.
@@GaryTongue-zn5di WRONG
As a child I never noticed , but as an adult I noticed the shift. She actually apologized.
Ah, the magic of adulthood! It's like we get a pair of glasses that reveal all the hidden truths from our childhood!
Little birdie, why do you fly upside down?
That's a great question! Maybe the little birdie just likes to see the world from a different perspective!
You warmed my heart. Beautiful!
Thanks a ton! That makes my day! Glad you liked it.
I'm confused by Snoopy and Woodstock cheering about the news. And that selfish dog and bird kept their proper Thanksgiving feast secret from the children.
Ha ha yeah. They were probably cheering because they could get to their private dinner sooner.
Hey, you can never think about the Peanuts Gang too much. Great observations.
@jonathanswift2251
FALSE! There have been adults in Charlie Brown. ONSCREEN in some of the movie specials.
I changed my text to read "regular/main" character.
I Think the bigger issue is that Woodstock is a Cannibal in this movie.
Haha, right? Who would have thought Woodstock was hiding such a wild secret? Gotta love those unexpected twists!
I sincerely thought you were going to expose Patty & her "friend". I forget her name.
Ha ha...Marcy.
Actually, even if Marcie had "feelings" for PP like that, she'd be attracted to BOTH Patty *and* Charlie Brown.
Thanks for sharing that insight! It's always fun to dive deeper into these characters and their relationships. I appreciate your thoughtful comment!
Wow! What a great analysis. I loved your video! I've always loved peanuts but I didn't know they could go so deep.
This hit me in the feels. Subscribed!❤❤
I'm glad the video resonated with you! Thanks for subscribing!

Why is nobody sitting next to Franklin? Pigpen I would understand, but Franklin?
It has nothing to do with racism. Franklin isn't given less food or told he can't go to Charlie Brown's Grandma's house. Plus, he has plenty of elbow room for himself, while Charlie Brown is squashed between two girls
They are doing him a solid. As a kid you always want to be on the side with the most room.
