Spoke to Phil personally - his answer to this and why he went with Dan Kroffat "I didn't care what they called me as long as the cheque clears - Kroffat was picked by Ricky (Martel) because they were in a french territory and needed me, as an english speaking guy, to have an english sounding name"

We've been seeing traction in your interview with Lafon given the Hannibal interview with Dan Kroffat from the Stampede days.

Such an underappreciated tag team, along with Gringos Loco

Doug Furnas and Dan Kroffat (Phil LaFon) were great in All Japan Pro Wrestling. They had a match against Kenta Kobashi and Tsuyoshi Kikuchi for the All Asia tag team titles in May of 1992, in Kikuchi's hometown in Japan. This match won a few match of the year awards, including the Wrestling Observer Newsletter match of the year I believe. It was a fantastic match, plus the crowd was whipped into a frenzy due to Tsuyoshi Kikuchi being the babyface hometown hero in a title match. This was a prime example of how a crowd can help elevate a match to an even higher level caliber match. I believe it's on RUclips as well for the fans that have not seen it. This was how great All Japan Pro Wrestling was in the 1990's. Arguably the top promotion of the 1990's. My favorite at least.

I just watched that match vs Kikuchi and Kobashi. Truly an awesome, awesome, awesome match. One of the best tag match ever, no doubt. Glad it got plenty of accolades.

@@jonathanturbide2232 It's definitely on my personal top 10 list of greatest tag team matches. Got another one for you, if you are interested. There's a good chance you may have already seen it....but if you haven't, you will be glad that i told you about this match. It's on youtube as well. It's a two out of three falls mask vs hair match between Octagon and El Hijo del Santo vs La Pareja del Terror (Art Barr & Eddie Guerrero) from the 1994 ppv from promotions AAA & IWC,
called "AAA When Worlds Collide. Fantastic match....Art Barr and Eddie Guerrero in ring ability and heel psychology during this match....as well as the era was excellent. This tag team was one of the greatest heel teams ever in my opinion. They had white hot heat in Mexico.

@@diggitydave75438 Thanks a lot for the recommendation Dave, much appreciated! Oh yes I saw that match many years ago, when I bought Eddie Guerrero's first dvd set produced by WWE! One of the most entertaining tag match I saw at the time, I had to watch it twice! Glad you mentioned it, I'm going to watch it again here on RUclips! Thanks man, you know your wrestling! 👌🏻✌🏻

Dan Kroffat was a name taken from another wrestler, who was a big draw for Stu Hart's Stampede territory and also worked as King Krow.

TheOstNZ Phil LaFleur (Kroffat) was also a Calgary product from the mid 80's.

The first Cowboy Dan Kroffat was the main event Babyface in Calgary throughout the 1970s. He has a famous feud with the Stomper.

Cowboy Dan Kroffat was a huge babyface star in Western Canada in 1970s, and in Japan as well. Possibly on his first trip, either Phil or the promoters in Japan did not want any confusion between LaFon and the original Cowboy Dan.

They were so good and should have gone far. The WWE could have used them much better.

They did seem a little bland for the WWF at that time but I wasn't aware that they were a bigger a deal in All Japan before that, I didn't really get to see much Japanese wrestling until some years later. With a lot of the other new talent floating around the card with them, I just chalked it up to them just trying different kinds of guys to see if any of them would catch on with the fans.

I got the impression that they were acquired because they had some buzz and even back then Vince didn't watch wrestling that wasn't his. They wouldn't have made it in the cartoony New Generation era or even the Attitude era, should've just stayed in Japan and ECW.

    • @jonathanturbide2232

It always makes me laugh when guys like you say "they should have stayed in Japan or ECW or blablabla". Like you know better than they did. Dude, ECW paid in pennies and Heyman was bouncing checks all over the place; Japan wrestling went downhill in the mid 90's, and not everyone gets accustomed to the lifestyle there (food, travel, social life, language barrier, etc). Them going to WWF was a great move, as they got steady money and were able to work in the US/Canada instead of being stuck in a country that might not be that pleasant to live in. For you to question their decision is laughable.

Great athletes, but they couldn’t talk. Vince has nothing for you if you ain’t got no charisma outside of wrestling.😊
