  • Ukrainian forces are advancing on both fronts, whilst Russian forces are just "digging in" and "playing for time", according to a defence analyst.
Speaking to Forces News, Professor Michael Clarke, a former director general of defence and security think tank RUSI, said that the Russians, are in a sense "playing for time for the winter".

What many people don't understand is that currently Ukraine is not really focused on taking land. Ukraine is focused on getting better tactical and strategical positions and cutting off enemy's supply lines. Which will subsequently enable them to dramatically improve the personnel and materiel lost ratio compared to the enemy's. Which mean that this war will become a black hole for Russian army. And once Russian army capabilities deteriorate just enough, Ukraine will most likely strike on ALL fronts at the same time to make sure everything crumbles. And then this war will turn into a whack-a-mole with a billion moles popping at the same time for the Russian brass. Welcome to the quagmire Russia. Giggity.

For sure. They aren't playing to gain ground but to win. Not even playing to win fast just to win and drain Russia. Russia has already lost 60,000 troops in this war. To put that in perspective the USA lost 58,000 in 20 years in Vietnam and that was enough to drop morale at home. Remember, numbers and technology don't win wars as much as Morale and Logistics. In Russia, since the mobilization was announced, there is already record number of flights going out of country. There will come a point where the people have had enough and Putin will be "removed" from office. The thing is he has to make a play for some victories. I don't mean total victory just yet but he needs some wins to increase moral (both at home and in the soldiers) and to save face so he isn't removed. This does, however, make his play transparent. He is forced into a position where he can't afford a war of attrition. He will have to do something bold and win some objective. The sad thing is we won't see peace with him in power. He can't afford to back out of this war with less then he went in with. He just can't. That's loosing too much face and he will be done for.

    Greetings from Belarus!
As for offensive from our country there is no any sings of it. Before 24-02 railway system in Belarus was full of Russian carriages and platforms with troops and military equipment, but now we are observing completely different story: ammunition and tanks are being removed from Belarusian warehouses and being delivered to southern regions of Russia. I'm completely agree with Mr. Clarke that preparations for future offensive will be noticed by Ukrainians because it's just impossible to cover such a huge mass of troops and equipment.
As for participation of Belarusian armed forces in it I'm not completely believe in it due to the fact it would be a political suicide for Lukashenko. Public opinion in our country is strongly against any participation of our troops in any war and this idea dominates among even those who support so called "Special military operation". Also I'm convinced that a significant part of our soldiers will refuse of it or will surrender to Ukrainians. In other words, if a professional Russian army failed to conquer Kiev in February 2022 in my opinion there is no way for mobilized to do it.

Ukraine's earlier battle in the Donbas resulted in massive casualties to the Ukrainian forces due to the overwhelming artillery and manpower of the Russian forces across the open terrain. However, Ukraine learned quickly to reorient their strategy in their counter-offensives in the northeast and southeast: to drastically weaken the enemy by: first destroying command posts, ammunition depots, fuel depots, logistics (bridges, railways, and roads), and concentrations of troops, artillery, and rocket-launchers; meanwhile, deeply demoralise the enemy by constant 24/7 guerilla attacks, sabotage, and forcing surrender; acquiring POWs and intact military hardware from the Russians to be used against them; and, liberating oppressed Ukrainian citizens in previously Russian-occupied communities.

Professor Clarke said that the Russians would bide their time for a potential offensive, probably next year in the Spring. Aren't Spring and Autumn the worst times to conduct an offensive in that part of the world, due to the rain and soil conditions? Isn't the best time of year for an offensive in the middle of winter when the ground, and perhaps rivers are frozen solid? The attacking side can maneuver, and the defending side, unless already dug in, cannot dig in because the ground is simply too hard for shovels and diggers.

Actually I agree and as a Canadian it's easy to see what's evil.
I used to think American foreign policy was evil, (still do), but I always believed American foreign policy didn't reflect true American values. I'm wrestling with that and am currently undecided but getting close to changing my mind.
In 1994 Tonya Harding (American figure skater) destroyed (broke her knee) Nancy Kerrigan because she couldn't win fairly. Was that an anomaly or is that how most Americans compete?
That's exactly what America is doing with Russia, Europe, China, and virtually every small country they deal with. If America can't compete, it destroys.
Everybody knows it and they silently support it. Remember when Pompeo bragged at a Texas A&M university that the CIA "we lie, we steal, we cheat,' ? Well that's not really news but what I found scary was how the entire audience laughed and applauded.
Americans seem to support cheating and lying and destroying anyone who might succeed.
Americans stopped their government in the Vietnam war. Why have Americans not stopped their government from the continuous regime change, invasions, sanctions, and proxy wars that kill and impoverish people every day?
So either America is not a democracy or the majority of Americans are as evil as the CIA and their foreign policy.

More NATO-trained Ukrainians return. Those will passed down their training to others. Even more NATO weapons are in the hands of the defenders. Much different military that the Russians faced in February. And, the Russians lost their northern offensive then.

Difficult to reconcile the comments made in the video wth the Ukrainian gains being made every day, sure the rate varies, but 'repositioning' doesn't really capture what's going on. Indeed, it's quite easy to envisage large elements of a Russian army increasingly reliant on the 1000s of poorly/un-trained, poorly equipped conscripts now being rushed into Ukraine to spend an entire winter living in trenches simply collapsing e.g. compare/contrast Ukraine receiving 100s of 1000s of winter uniforms with Russia discovering 1.5 million of theirs had gone "missing". Moreover, now Russia has ground it's way thru conscripts from the separatist regions, the actual Russian-Russian bodycount is going to race up with all that potentially means for domestic politics.

I’m not too sure that The Kremlin is willing to commit suicide just yet, as they are still trying to chase down civilians and tampons to send into Ukraine.

Sorry, Prof, didn't you notice the new Ukrainian symbol's a take on the SAS? Their strategy's not one of winter quarters, they've set up a cascading series of dominoes aimed at Tokmak, with the entire supply line to the Crimea reduced to the coast road, air and ship.

Indeed. It is as if they forgot that the Soviet Red Army made its greatest advances against the Wehrmacht during the winter. With all of the cold weather gear Canada and Norway have sent, I see Ukraine doing the same.

What you're talking about is a classic siege of Kherson. Russians would be cut off from supply but they could steal food and shelter from the Ukrainian citizens causing them to suffer. The Russians could hold out while the citizens starve. Because of this I don't think a standard encirclement will work for Kherson and it may have to be assaulted.

Attend to disagree that the lines are going to stabilize during the winter. The Russians are limited where they can go because of all the wetland. If they stabilize on one front and dig in, by not moving Ukraine will just Hammer the hell out of them and it will be dead. As long as Ukraine can take over their drones easily and send them back on them, and use their own drones to terrorize and bomb Russian soldiers Plus show heavy artillery where to hang it will be just like last winter. Total devastation for Russians on the front line in my opinion. I could be wrong, but I watched a lot of wars heaven flow in my 65 years.

Don't forget that the Soviet Red Army made its biggest gains against the Wehrmacht during the winter months. I can easily see Ukraine doing the same, especially when you consider that Canada and Norway have been sending cold weather gear since August.

My Ukrainian cousin joined the AFU back in February, he had months and months of training. Now he’s on the front line. Yet 🤡face thinks giving someone a bit of uniform and a gun makes them a trained soldier. I said bit of uniform because we know there isn’t enough uniform, kit or weapons. The cold is coming, if the men off the street haven’t had experience of working or sleeping outside, they have an ordinary sleeping bag, dry rations. They will be surrendering in droves! 🇺🇦🌻🇺🇦🌻🇺🇦🌻🇺🇦🌻

The noose is tightening and Putin is starting to cry “Uncle.” What all of that suggests is that they are getting to the point of absolute failure. This is not the time to lose resolve. This is the time to press militarily until Russia leaves all of Ukraine including Crimea. Once that is accomplished, negotiations can begin.
