What drew me to this arrangement is the haunting orchestration, as well as Anna’s voice. She studied music professionally and employs more operatic technique than many current pop singers. In fact, her vibrato reminds me a lot of Bowie’s. This is indeed an art performance piece and I definitely see the connection with Arcade Fire.
Massive and lifelong Bowie fan, longtime admirer of Calvi too. However, this is a no no. Some songs should be left well alone, unless you can better it. It can't be bettered, the end.
I absolutely loved it, until around about where the voice came in. She has a great voice no doubt but she can't match Bowie for intensity emotion and tenderness. It was still a decent cover though. Unfortunately the orchestration started to lose it a bit at that point too. The original seemed to sit before a sparse, even empty space, even during those frantic piano sections. This became an overly complex wall of sound. Some people will love it, I'm certain. Just not my cup of tea. Then again, it's hard to outdo, or even match, Bowie! If I weren't so familiar with the original, I'd probably like this more. However, I'm a HUGE Bowie fan and I couldn't help but compare. The only 2 times I feel someone covering Bowie were, Beck's cover of Diamond Dogs, taking it in a very original, almost discordant direction. I love that cover! The other being Billy Mackenzie's (from The Associates) cover, of Bowie's incredible cover, of Wild is the Wind The latter song is my favourite Bowie vocal, so to suggest someone matched that performance, is saying something, from me anyway! :)

The original would make a great James Bond theme song

The original is divine!
Well, the setting was nice. This version however is less so. Sorry.
Not a fan…….the original is untouchable…..i appreciate the arrangement, but just dont like how she sang it. I do like Anna Calvi.
Yep, her version of Blackstar was more successful than this one.
