  • The U.S. Army Selected Vortex to provide its Next Generation Squad Weapon - Fire Control Optic (NGSW-FC XM157; XM-157). But what is an NGSW-FC? What is Vortex’s new scope replacing? What weapons will it ultimately sit on? What features/capabilities does it have? What is Active Reticle™? What is Intra-Soldier Wireless? How do the features work? With this much tech built in, is it durable? How was it tested? Is it easy to use? Where will the scope be manufactured? What are the overall implications of our nation’s warfighters having this technology in their hands? Alexander Lewis from Vortex’s secret-squirrel sector answers these questions and more (as much as he is allowed by law). Listen in to get the scoop on this revolutionary smart scope!

  • @PatrickHutton

    Fascinating. Out of interest would a potential countermeasure to the laser range finder be a soldier mounted laser detector? This would at least give the soldier a very short warning that he was being targeted and maybe hitting the ground would make the difference. Or would there be a way to disrupt or deceive the range finder? I know that there are counter measures (both passive and active on armoured vehicles) So these could be downsized for personal use just like range finders have been downsized.

    • @BernardB2000
      @BernardB2000 2 года назад

      Maybe the shooter with the Vortex could range on an object at the distance of the target and then aim at the actual target without the laser operating (if the target has personal laser detection). I have seen vids of laser guided tank missiles where they aim above the tank so the tank's laser detection doesn't detect it then drop the laser down on the tank in the final phase so its detectors can't react in time. Similar principle. So maybe it will depend on training and technique. Or you could have fun and watch the enemy drop to the dirt every time you range on them but don't shoot. Or have a separate laser system with a broad beam and set off all their personal laser detectors. Then they switch them off and then you shoot some. Then they switch the detectors back on. Rinse and repeat. Starting to get a bit complicated. I'm guessing now that a personal laser detector would be useless against an enemy who knows what they are doing.

    • @fonesrphunny7242
      @fonesrphunny7242 2 года назад

      A sensor array around a helmet could determine the approximate direction of the incoming laser. Helmet because it's very rigid, so the position of the sensors relative to each other doesn't change, and it's usually the most exposed part of a soldier.
      For jamming, you could go for directional or omni-directional systems. Both have their pros and cons.

    Feel free to run with this idea vortex, for the additional attachment to the front of the optic, a device that transmits shooter aiming points along with all tagged locations to a tablet, battle manager, commander, or friendly vehicles could be an indespensible asset! Its applications could range between after action reports and precise corections during training, to coomanders and battle managers having a greater idea of where combatanats aare located in relation to troops!
    Soldiers could have an ISR platform overhead marking targets that appear in the huds of all or just releveant soldiers.
    If this comes to fruition, I apologize to all Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, & Specialists who will inevitably face micro managing to some degree.

  • @danphariss133
    @danphariss133 2 года назад

    There are, in my mind, a number of “issues” with the militaries requirements here. It might be better to spend more time on marksmanship training with an optic that weighs less than 2 pounds than to try to cram all this crap into a heavy monster. I still cannot find if the total weight of the unloaded gun is with or without the 2 pound optic. Its possible to use reticles for range finding. In combat often simpler is better.. They are in no particular order, rapid over heating due to the suppressor ( I think of Hector Cafferata’s account of his Medal of Honor action early in the Korean War his account is in a DVD sometimes available from CMP call Americas Rifle), to much weight, 80000 psi operating pressure effecting barrel life (this is in excess of current proof levels which is 67500 for 7.62 NATO and 65000 for 50 BMG) will this increase with a hot barrel, like maybe hot enough to light a cigarette off? One of the men in the platoon one fine day shot an m-60 until he had to wrap the forend with a flack jacket and then melted the flack jacket. So sometimes heat is an issue. Suppressors are notorious for heat issues and then changes in impact point. Is the ammo REALLY SIGNIFICANTLY lighter then 7.62? Bullet weight is within 7 grains, powder charge must be too since the case has the same capacity, the case itself? We don’t know they only tell us its “lighter” they will not give a number. Is the 8.4 pound rifle weight with or without the 2 pound optic? Finally. The cost. The M4 costs about 700 bucks. If some PFC loses it it costs him 700 bucks. If the XM5 is lost or run over by a truck etc etc. How much does it cost the PFC? The civilian model is 8 grand. I bet the military optic alone is 2-3 grand.
    So I like the heavier caliber, especially for the belt fed, I think the suppressor is going to cause issues if they get into high volume of fire “problems” as has happened in the past. We may not always be fighting in a place where the contact ranges are relatively long and supporting fires and air can help. When the contact range is 20 yards or less you simply have to shoot it out and having an overheated firearm is not going to help here. Suppressors also make for a very dirty firearm extra crap in the barrel and gas system. Time will tell but I am not optimistic. I was Army Infantry 1970-71 and I heated up a firearm a few times.

      The gen 3 razor alone is $3,600. I would estimate this scope is going to be more like $5k for the base optic and then at least that for the computer unit that sits on top. So that replacement optics package is probably in the neighborhood of $8k-$10k

      Probby about the same as the rifle itself. This is common with super high end optics, you know.

    . . Answer these questions and answer them HONESTLY.
    . . Does this scope have a GPS system?
    . . Could it possibly be used by an enemy force (hacker) to track US forces?
    . . Will it be made in China?
