      it's a crowd pleaser. dragon ball z got popular around the time it introduced a fighting tournament. also having browsed the wiki on occasion in its early days 682 was probably one of the most in depth of the early articles. actually having an extensive research log and a recording of its speech. even if it was a short unlisted youtube video of it saying "they were disgusting" and it gave the story a more singular antagonist. but for such a realistic research organization to basically just take poorly understood physics breaking anomalies and just make them fight each other is kind of simple. aaaand I just realized professor oak heard I wuz talkin shit. but in pokemon it works. they are understood and used in day to day life and enter into battle because they genuinely enjoy tests of power and skill.

    Appears to have a hatred of all life is actually a valid way of phrasing it, since you shouldn't just assume something is true just because the SCP says it is. That isn't enough evidence to be 100% sure, and since there is no good way of testing it, you don't pretend to be sure. The appears to be extremely intelligent part is stupid though, since that would be proven just by it being able to talk.

Self-proclamation and designation usually tend to be seen as evidence, unless proven otherwise. If your theory was correct, you could never believe a confession of guilt. (=/= admission. Confession comes of your own accord, admission during questioning). The only instance where you can not believe a confession of guilt is when evidence suggests otherwise, though you will still have to keep the confessor in for further questioning and until all evidence is cleared of error. • @lordnul1708
      @lordnul1708 4 года назад

      @Rylan H. Mangum yes, but here's why I treat it as legitimate.
      While there is no "one true, official canon", I like many others hold that Joke SCPs are still legitimate as long as they meet one of two criteria.
      The first is that if it has a main series counterpart, then the -J must hint that it is at least a separate entity from the original (example 049-J) rather than just a straight parody that's clearly the original through a different lense (example 682-J).
      The second criteria is that if it doesn't have a main series counterpart, it must be believable, already widely accepted as legit or have a minimum level of professionalism while still being funny. Respective examples for this criteria would be 420-J (already high level marijuana run through The Clockworks on "fine" will do that to you), The Butt Ghost (it does tend to appear in a multitude of otherwise serious stories) and the aforementioned 666 1/2 J (while the objectivity does waver, it does maintain standard format for the most part) as well as 5555-J (which while more of a journal entry does result in a proper SCP, only now we see it being tested on by a doctor on himself).
      Examples that don't meet the second criteria: "The Baaaaal!" (Just a tennis ball from the perspective of a dog), 006-J (just ordinary insects and larvae, but with an over exaggerated response from all but a few) and 027-J (a remote that keeps getting lost, likely to really just be due to negligence)

    I normally like your work but you have a bad stumble right out of the gate on this one. You have conspicuously missed a vital piece of context, SCP-682 was the second SCP ever written, so the "must be destroyed" line wasn't a subversion of anything when it was written. and going forward the impression that the "must be destroyed" line belongs to 682 in some way has been much stronger than any tendency to imitate it. anytime a new entry is something more powerful and dangerous 682 as it was written everyone retroactively levels up their image of 682 to justify why it is the only SCP that "must be destroyed"

    You make good points, though you might be going a little too harsh. 682 was one of the first entries on the wiki, so there wasn't really much to "subvert" as you put it, in terms of the mission, as, from what I've heard, things were still being hammered out in terms of what the mission actually was. This was before the GOC existed as even a concept, leaving the Foundation without something to compare themselves to, in story and writing wise, which is taken for granted. I got into SCP 2 or 3 years ago and thought, "oh, so this who they were talking about at the end of Raiders when they told Indie that they had top men handling the Ark. These are the top men." But that's a modern day observation, taken after the Wiki has had a chance to world build and define the rules. 682 was from the Wild West days of the Wiki, and while it's not perfect, it still draws people in, it certainly grabbed my attention. Yes, the language and grammar could use work, but I find that to be true of a lot of articles, regardless of what series. Do I think it would be better if we saw the actual body count to know just how dangerous 682 is, absolutely. If you want to make a case for termination, numbers don't lie and I'm pretty sure the Shy Guy and the Duke killed less than 682 before getting their execution orders. But what really makes 682 so dangerous is its ability to adapt to survive any danger, no matter how great or ludicrous (for crying out loud, the beast has literal plot armor!). It's the Superman monster Doomsday, only worse since it's intelligent and doesn't have to die in order to adapt itself. Not very original writing, but still a scary concept. So, why do people like 682? Same reason we like Godzilla, I guess. It's mean, intimidating, and a force of primordial animal rage that all of modern man and his hi tech weapons are laid low by. I enjoy that, but I don't want everyone and their cousin trying to make their own Godzilla. It would dilute what's good about it and magnify it's flaws. The same can be said of 682

I think it's hypocrisy (is that the word? yes it is) criticising an early work of poor writing when one does not even have their terms straight. One is about the subject, the other is about the quality of the article on the subject. As far as I know. Sorry, just still waiting to know what is it we were wrong about.

    Honestly, my head canon on 682 is that it is an immortal kitten with a memetic effect. It convinces observers, even indirect ones, that it is their worst nightmare and about to destroy the world. Really, all those victims died of heart attacks when the kitten tried to play with them, and the memetic effect transferred to make it look like they were butchered by a monster. The cross tests were invented by the meme as background encouraging further attempts at destruction. It seems to feed solely on stupidity, and finds the most reliable source to be scared people with no one to question then.

    I feel like this is to harsh on 682. Like yes it is a flawed piece of work but all those flaws lie in how it is written. Flaws in writing that permeated series one, so singling out 682 just seems excessive. Not to mention the concept of a highly intelligent vaguely reptilian entity with highly resistant and adaptable physiology is sure a description of 682, but also kinda sounds like a xenomporph. So saying that 682 is intrinsically bad and should not be a source of inspiration is just wrong, I mean that statement is wrong in general but you get my point.

  • @mercury7d
    @mercury7d 5 лет назад +17

    I think a good assumption for why it’s “Destroy ASAP” protocol exists (not saying this is intent but it’s a way out) is that it’s intelligent, actively trying to kill, but also is able to be destroyed. They can and have destroyed 87% of it before meaning it’s not something they have to just lock away and pray about, but it’s also actively breaching containment and going out solely to kill life. A lot of the dangerous things worse than 682 can’t be killed or destroyed, so you don’t try. A lot of the things that hate people or humanity can’t really do much about it with easy-ish containment. But this? This is something that we can maybe probably kill, that keeps getting out, and only exists to kill us. It’s not a perfect theory but it fits some notes.

    682 works as a one of, redactions and all.
    The thing people forget about the mindset of many series 1 SCPs is (and yes, slightly my headcanon but I was in some author IRC chats back in the day) that the foundation compartmentalized to a massive degree (thus seemingly silly redactions) but wanted some basic level of knowledge of SCP objects just in case.
    As for the must be destroyed bit, its a creature that is next to impossible to keep contained in the long term, eventually it will find a new way out, and lots of people will die when thay hapens.
    And yes, many other SCPs will kill even more people if they get loose, but those tend to be more containable where this is just some sapient creature that seemingly (at first) could eventually be killed... then everyone tried, failed, and lots of people died.
    I seem to recall an early version of the article (I could easily be misremembering I admit) that made a point of mentioning part of the reason for the destruction order was the belief that eventually acid would stop working on it as well, and it needed to be offed before that one way to contain it stopped working.
    Oh, and Doc, your mentions of D class terminations not making sense (mentioning this in a new vid where youre more likely to see) they do if the D class just gets their memory wiped and they get reverted to an earlier point (say, just after their D class training) until such time as their not being wiped proves useful, and they get shuffled around until a scp they can prove useful on is found, or until they die in an experiment, that would also mean a D class only has a month to build and enact an escape plan before poof goes the memory.

      That combined with its size and desire to kill everything is what makes it a keter threat.
      And since it can be hurt, that hints it may be possible to someday kill it, that is why it has a kill order.

    • @schnoz2372
      @schnoz2372 5 лет назад +5

      Yeah. I think he has written some and he claims they’re good but idk which ones he wrote and therefore I cannot tell if he’s actually a good writer. Also a lot of his problems with SCPs is extremely nit picky bull shit like “don’t use the phrase ‘appears to be,’ its bad and sucks.” Granted, lots of writing, especially in collaborative fiction works are going to have grammatical errors. It’s not like these people are writing novels under a massive publisher, they’re just fans. Like you could enjoy it and suspend a small amount of disbelief or accept that each entry has its own flavor, or you could just talk shit about other writers and their work.

    • @schnoz2372
      @schnoz2372 5 лет назад +4

      I attribute the mistakes of very old SCP entries to the growing pains of a great work of collaborative fiction, I think it was necessary to achieve what we have now. I agree with some of the things he was but some of it was just judgy bullshit. “Just cause you like something doesn’t mean it’s good” goes both ways.

      @A.Tolonen 5 лет назад +3

      @@schnoz2372 I would say that good grammar, especially in SCP articles which are supposed to be written in the style of clinical documents, is perhaps the most fundamental thing that a writer has to get right. And it is something that is present in the vast majority of stuff that gets deleted from the wiki fails at. Just having good writing is enough to make many people no-vote instead of downvoting, even if they don't particularly enjoy the article itself. So grammar is extremely important. For me personally, if I read an article which has severe grammatical errors (not small mishaps in clinical tone, but mistakes in basic sentence structure or misspelled words) from the start, that is an immediate downvote, regardless of the article's contents.
      And while it's fine if you don't personally agree with all of Cimmerian's points, the fact that he is a pretty successful author with several quite highly rated articles shows that he has at least some understanding of writing for the wiki. And I think that his fundamental point (that SCP-682 should not serve as something that new authors should try to replicate) is very true and something you can see just by looking at the articles that get deleted.

    1:682 is one of The biggest threats there is to the foundation "But why isnt that on reality benders" because most of them cant even be damaged some cant be contained and also we can contain them mostly becuase Doctor Scranton is a fucking badass
    2: The foundation can more or less contain 682 unlike reality benders witch you can throw Scranton reality anchors at them
    3: Its big fucking threat because it's sapient and smarter than a lot lf people it can adapt to everything so if you try to kill it too many times it will just become invincible but you cant let it just exist because Well it hates all life and it grows Forever if you let it eat enough stuff basically 682 CAN creat an XK-end of the world scenario it could just keep eating dirt untill it became as big as mountain so yeah it MUST BE KILLED AT ALL COSTS

    I think 682 can be a fun scp when you put him in another room with a different scp like say 096 for example. Most of the time you usually die when facing 096 but because of 682's nature 096 can't kill it so that puts forth the question "what would happen if 096 can't kill his target?" So 682 can be a way to explore those types of questions that and a lot of his termination logs are pretty entertaining.

    I think a quick easy fix for a lot of the problems in this entry would be that the SCP has an effect that causes a compulsion to try to destroy it. No matter what anyones ethics are otherwise. This would work out pretty well I think because this SCP has the ability to create permanent adaptations after attempts to kill it. So this would give it a way to become stronger through this effect to cause others to want to kill it.
    It would even give credibility to the idea that its able to break containment so often. The foundation keeps trying to kill it even though that goes directly against the foundations own interests and ethics. The SCP wants this to happen and it allows it to adapt and evolve further and allows it to escape easier and new containment protoccols would be needed often.

    I've gotten into thinking of SCP 682 as marvels Hulk. Sometimes its an angry "Smash everything between me and my destination" character. Other times he won't hurt a fly unless its the second Tuesday of the month. It all depends on what the current author using 682 needs for that story. Which is how we end up with Dr. Kondraki using 682 to escape threw site 19 from SCP 083.

    Phrases like "appears to have" are just examples of good scientific writing and intellectual honesty where certainty is rare and absolutes are not used. In this example the author is open to SCP-682 being deceptive about its hatred (would you trust SCP-682 to be completely honest?), and intelligence is difficult to define. SCP-682 has been shown to be highly adaptive, but whether this is a conscious decision to assist survival or simply an anomalous effect has not been established to my knowledge. In the latter case then its ability to adapt is not directed by intelligence and giving SCP-682 the credit is incorrect, however it would also be wrong, and dangerous, to exclude the possibility of SCP-682 being highly intelligent. The point being that science doesn't deal in absolutes at the best of times, so it is even less likely when we consider anomalous objects and creatures.

    Haven’t read 682’s article in forever, so seeing that first line again was pretty eye-opening. I can see why people decided to pair it with 053 since it shares that “must be destroyed at all costs” trait, but as its Anomaly instead of its evaluation.
    Kinda makes me want to see a rewrite that hints at 682 having a memetic property that causes everyone to irrationally want to destroy it.
    In reality, it could be: 1) cursed with immortality, and desperately trying to find something to end its existence (ie the numerous termination attempts), 2) actually holding no ill-will toward anything, and just wants to escape its tormentors (ie the numerous containment breaches), 3) is cursed with weaponizing/absorbing anything used to kill itself (so even 999 cant help its situation), 4) is actually trying to be friendly, but its anomaly (or alien mind) prevents its interactions from going well (053 having a similar memetic effect could be the first to see it for what it is, with the two anomalies canceling each other out), 5) like Joe-Schmo, his anomaly alters what everyone sees him saying/doing.

    You’re wrong about SCP: 682 Cimmerian.
    The reason the foundation tries to kill it is stated in the article. The foundation doesn’t have a reliable way to contain it and it breaks out of containment on regular basis. Granted it’s not the most dangerous scp around but it lead to a broken masquerade scenario.
    Pretty much the same reason why Shy Guy 096 is also designated for termination, albeit 096 is far more dangerous to the world if it got out.

    • @dragonslair951167
      @dragonslair951167 2 года назад +1

      The real problem with 682 is the cost of recapturing it in its containment breaches. Every time it breaks free and is captured again, the Foundation has to replace a bunch of lost personnel, repair the severely-damaged containment building, foot the bill for all the equipment the MTFs used to incapacitate 682 (Machine guns, ATVs, attack helicopters, missiles and all the requisite supplies aren't cheap), and pay for a bunch of acid and acid-resistant steel to replace the stuff lost in the breach. And as you said, there's no reliable way to prevent these regular breaches.
      096, while dangerous, will never breach containment unless the Foundation makes a mistake or is attacked by an outside force. Which is probably why it hasn't had as many resources invested into its termination.

    • @Manudiferro-vn3gg

    My SCP head cannon:
    the SCP foundation's Records are shared and exist within a multiverse.
    As a result SCPs both exist and don't exist all at the same time,
    this is due to the fact that the entry is edited across infinite Realities.
    From this prospective all fan works a both cannon and non-cannon, since they effectively happen whilst not happening at all.
    This also applies to all SCPs since in some realities they are real whilst in others they are merely a entry warped into the data logs due to them existing across the multiverse.

    And fan art, fan film, fan whatever, is exactly that.... its from a fan!! So who cares if they incorporate it into what they are doing or if they draw it to resemble a reptile more then anything else... That’s all they have to go by... it’s literally the only animal that is mentioned regarding its appearance... so what would they have it look like??
    Just Bc YOU wouldn’t do something.... Doesn’t mean others should take your advise over what they want to do...
    I came here and subscribed Bc I am fairly new to the scp world... but find it fun and interesting and have always been into things like it.... I have learned a few things...
    But mostly I am starting to get the impression that you’re a smug, pretentious, purist fan that thinks of fans that are new or into “popular” scps as lesser fans...
    It’s obviously fine to have opinions and theories and thoughts about something.... But telling people they are wrong for doing things or believing things you don’t...
    Is called being an Elitist.... Think you need to check yourself...
    Fans come in all different makes and models man... correcting them on things they actually have wrong... No problem, go nuts... trying to belittle them Bc you feel their actions are beneath you... is sad.
