    I bought a TX16S because of your video. I’m a spektrum user so it’s been a learning curve but your videos help a lot! I will say they don’t all come with the two speakers. I got the hall version and bought the second speaker so I could hear it. Made a big difference. I just bought my radio two weeks ago. Mine also just came with a cover

    Your Futaba Radio there just one or two generations after mine. The overall look is very similar. For MANY years (+25 years), I used the Futaba FP-T4FN-72. It's gimbals were similar to your Futaba, but without the circular features yours have before the square mounting. It's trim's were much more simple- no markings of any kind. The generation before mine looked nearly identical to mine, but the gimbals were just sticks coming out of a CONICAL chrome looking metal surface. Those were the days before stabilization!!!!

    Great review. For all of my R/C flying career I've been a loyal Futaba user. Futaba radios link is bulletproof, and the build quality is solid. It has never once let me down, not even a single glitch or brown out. But now I'm looking to switch to the dark side (OpenTX interface with FrSky or RadioMaster transmitter, etc.). It's amazing how much feature they offer for the asking price. I'm also officially mad at Futaba for their overpriced radios and lack of features. Even the high end 18SZ with a street price of $999 still don't have voice assigned switch functions! To get voice speech function you have to move up to the 18MZ at a whopping $2,500 price tag! There are several pilots at my local club that flies turbine jets with FrSky equipment and they seem to have no issue with them. Haven't seen any RadioMasters being used to fly large expensive models yet, but I anticipate no issues.

Starting with a dx6e, then: nx6, nx8, nx10, nx10se (favorite out of all,) & spent 2 freaking grand on the worst tx I've owned n my life (of doing rc since 1977), the 20se. 20se was the biggest pile of 💩 I've ever owned. Basically that's the hall gimbal version with the CNC stuff, the coloured flaceplate and the side grip things. It definitely worth in my opinion if you want those addons, I've bought it when it came out and then upgraded it myself saving like 20$ which, given the amount of work I had to do to disassemble the whole radio to fit the new parts, I would definitely pay to get it installed from factory.

    Hi, the recent version doesn't have the project box but it does have everything else that the Max has, including the same gimbals, except the cnc bling. The only thing it may not have, I haven't opened mine yet, is the upgraded switches under the cnc buttons. When you buy the cnc kit as an upgrade it comes with different switches to go under the cnc covers. It may be that the current version already comes with those switches as standard now.
    Edit: The switches are the same but the top one is slightly offset.

    Hi John. About the Anti glare screen protection you use on the horus. Where I can get those? I need one for my T16

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  2 года назад

      No idea. The screen film on my Horus is a top polarized replacement layer because I scratched the original layer and removed it without thinking; fully, covered in this video along with the link to the film: ruclips.net/video/EwSTCVQzIbo/видео.html
      As shown in that video, the only way that specific film I used would work on a RM TX16's screen would be if you removed the top polarizing layer of the screen as well. I certainly wouldn't recommend it for obvious reasons. I would think any anti reflective non-polarized film for a computer monitor, tablet, or phone could be used on the TX16s however.

    regarding the not supported touchscreen: what do you think about edge tx? before i even got my radio, everyone i was talking to said "switch to edge tx, it's way better than open tx". sadly, because of wind i wasn't able to use it yet. i programmed it for my nano s3 and everything seems to work with edge tx (because of course i switched, even if it's just because it's better to type model names now). can't wait to use it for real
    thx to the basically identical UI all the open tx tutorials also worked for my for setting dual rate and so

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  2 года назад +1

      @RadimentriX - EdgeTX has nothing I really want over and above what OpenTX already has. I personally don't care for touch screens on any RC radio. There is nothing worse than greasy nitro goo or pre-mix all over the display so that feature is of no value for my needs. I'm sticking with what works and is time proven as I have too much invested in my machines to risk beta testing unknowns. I'll of course switch to Edge when OpenTX is no longer supported and has been out for a while - but I'm in absolutely no rush to do so.

    Hi John. I just ran across your review. Thank you for the information. I’m thinking of getting a TX16 to replace my Horus x10s. Do you think you get the same performance out of the 4-in-1 module as compared to a FrSky RF deck in terms of reliable connection to the aircraft? All my receivers are X8R’s on ACCST Ver 2. I’m just wondering about flying more expensive aircraft with this radio. I have not found much on the web on this topic (maybe I’m not using the proper search terms). The radio definitely checks the boxes for me (OTX, EDGETX, ergonomics). You mention in one of the comments a year ago that you still fly your larger aircraft with your X12. Thanks for any information you can provide. PS, I also have found your boxster videos very helpful.

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  2 года назад

      I don't think the RF performance/robustness of the RadioMaster TX16S's built in Multi-Protocol-Module is lacking in any way compared to FrSky's RF system. I've flown larger helicopters with the TX16's without issue and fully trust it. Keep in mind, large RC helicopter line of sight flying is not as far out as large fixed wing line of sight is. RF range of course is as much RX dependent as TX.
      I too am running mostly X8R's on my larger birds. I get similar if not slightly more consistent RSSI numbers with the TX16S on the larger helicopters; of course the Horus X12S is not exactly known for stellar RF range & diversity with the built in PCB antenna; which is why I often run it with the secondary external antenna as well.
      As to why I preferer to use my X12S with all my larger helicopters - several little personal reasons all combining to make it the obvious choice on the big stuff:
      - I like the feel of it in my hands better.
      - I like the heavier weight better.
      - I like the lower sliders on it with nitro & gas engines so I can fine tune the carb idle settings during starting, warmup, and running.
      - The sound/speakers on X12S is/are fantastic.
      - Fit's my specific transmitter glove better for winter flying.
      - And of course the main & primary reason why I got the X12S in the first place is for the the upper display. It's never blocked by my neck strap and on on my larger birds, I do use and glance down at that display quite a bit during a flight so it's very nice seeing all the information at a quick glance over taking a few glances to look around the strap.
      - As I also demonstrated in the video, I wear prescription polarized sun glasses when I fly my bigger birds, and the polarization blocks out the display on the TX16S (at least on this Max version).
      Again, most of these are personal reasons, and the primary one (the upper display) doesn't even apply the X10S.
      Hope that helps a bit 🙂

    • @MrTorquenut
      @MrTorquenut 2 года назад

      @@Rchelicopterfun Thanks John for the detailed response. It all makes sense. Interesting about the polarized sunglass issue. I also fly with prescription polarized sunglasses and it has not been a problem with my X10S (and probably your X12 as well). You mention that you demonstrated the issue in the video, but I did not see it in this one or your original TX16 review. If it is on another video, let me know. Otherwise I'm good. Thanks again for the information. Watching your Boxster video on cleaning out the radiators just put another to do item on my list :-)

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  2 года назад

      @MrTorquenut - Sorry, I was mistaken on which video I mentioned that in. It was the Eachine TX16S review I did with the section on LCD screen polarization: ruclips.net/video/5mT-S3MhcxE/видео.html (the polarization demonstration starts around the 10 minute mark).
      It depends on what specific screen they use, but it seems all the newer TX16's (both RadioMaster & Eachine) are not polarized at a 45 degree angle like the original TX16S was, along with the Horus and obviously your X10S Horus as well.

    Hi John,
    Thanks for your video of the “Bling Bling” gold Radiomaster TX16S Max. When I come on the field I will have to live with the sneering remarks from the orther pilots. The gold man or Goldfinger, but I fell in love right away.
    My question concerns the Companion updates. Every time accompanied with the radio software there is a SD card update that often ask for some jugglery for keeping all your settings.
    When looking to the folder content of the new SD card that must be installed I see a lot of empty folders. Only install the necessary folders I should sudsiest. But live is often not so simple. Probably there are some hidden files.
    This question must be addressed to the developers of OpenTX. Do you know the right person that I can ask this question or will you be so kind to pop this up.

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  3 года назад +1

      The "Goldfinger" - I like it! 👍 One of my favorite Bond movies. Anyway, SD card version hassles. Yes, it's a bit of a hassle. I'm not sure where I read this (likely on OpenTX U somewhere since that's my OpenTX bible), but it's not absolutely critical you update the SD card with each companion/firmware update.
      I will usually just drag the new opentx.sdcard.version file from the updated SD file into my radio SD card to get rid of the wrong SD version warning. I won't do that every time, but I don't see the need to do a full SD card update with every single firmware update. Every 3rd version of firmware however, I do update the card contents since there is scrip in it there that changes over time with the various updates. When I do a full card update, I will replace the image, logs, models, and sound files so I don't lose any of that specific info that is not related to firmware. Just my method of course and others may say it's not the best practice. I guess I'll find out eventually.
      As for whom to contact to ask specifically... I really have no idea. OpenTX's site does have an "issues" page where people can report bugs or wish list requests so that would be one avenue. I'm sure you can post questions and comments also on Github in the OpenTX section where all the developers hang out (you'll need to open a account I think). I think they (OpenTX) also have a face-book page, but since I deleted my farce-book account years ago, I've never looked.

      Suggest paying a visit to Multi Protocol. orgs website for protocol compatibility. All Multi-Protocol modules including the one in the RM TX16S support all formats of Spektrum DSM protocol (DSM2 11&22ms & DSMX). So no issues there with the AR7200 - works fine.

Of course the only way to know for sure how robust your DSM2/X RF link is with this radio (or any other for that matter) is to use the Spektrum SPM9540 RF data logger. Real data in terms of fades & packet losses on your specific model/s, with your specific antenna placement/spatial diversity/polarization orientation is orders of magnitude more valuable than anecdotal experiences from others. 🙂

    High John...my only gripe on Radio Master TX16 S was the protruding moving part on gimble..not sure what to call it...part that held stick, I would always hit it with my finger on throttle gimble and accidentally power up model slightly...on spektrum radios it was recessed and round and deeper so never had the problem..so I like the idea of gimble setting slightly deeper in transmitter ...may be why they they offer this choice !...also...ordered the glass screen protector accessory...any special advice or method when installing it ??? @Rchelicopterfun  3 года назад

      I haven't fit the protector yet, but having fit other screen protectors over the years, the most important thing is to have zero dust on the screen as the film is slowly laid down from one side of the screen to the other. Even the tiniest bit of dust will look like a rock under the protector film. I use a little compressed air after cleaning the screen to ensure it's spotless and dust free.

    Thanks for another fantastic review! I've been looking at the "max" for a little while now and they do look really nice. My question is this: I currently have a Jumper T16 (with Hall effect gimbals, internal multi-module, and I've modded it to be USB-C with internal charging) and it's so far served me very well. That being said, I don't get a whole lot of time to fly my little helis and I'm wondering if I should make the change to the RadioMaster or just stick with what I've got. Any thoughts?

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  3 года назад +1

      Very similar radios. However, since I have no experience with the Jumper, I don't know if it has any better or worse attributes over Radio Master? Presuming, all things being equal between the two, I suppose the only reason to get a new one (radiomaster or other), would be if your T16 is getting tired or you simply want a new and different looking radio.

    • @JohnRSippy
      @JohnRSippy 3 года назад

      @@Rchelicopterfun I've heard some people complain about Jumper's ribbon cables malfunctioning, but mine have not (possibly because I replaced them when I did the USB-C charging mod? *shrugs*). So far there isn't any appreciable wear on the gimbals, but I don't get to fly terribly often. The only real reason for the upgrade for me at this point is cosmetic (that red and black is really sharp!) and the touch screen (when OpenTX supports it).

      @@JohnRSippy I bought a silver TS16S Max to replace my DX6e that replaced my DX6i. The most difficult thing for me was getting used to OTX v. Spektrum. The "curb appeal" of the TX16S Max cosmetically gorgeous. I've changed my sticks ends out for black/silver "umbrella" type, and have a pair of black gimbal faces on the way. The options available to personalize the TX16S with OEM parts was and is a HUGE plus for me.

      If you're up for the learning curve involved in OpenTX - The TX16X is hard to beat in terms of value. More importantly, as I recommend to everyone thinking of making the switch to an OpenTX radio (regardless of brand or model), is to spend a good deal of time on OpenTX University's web site so you have an idea of the undertaking involved in learning OpenTX. Some folks never figure out OpenTX and hate it. Better to find that out before making a new radio purchase. Another must visit site with these radios is the Multi-Protocol website. I have links to both in the original review video I did on the RM TX16S Hall version.

  • @bloodnocka
    @bloodnocka 3 года назад

    John, do these radios have something similar to Spektrum's model match? So you can't inadvertently use the wrong model selection. Not overly familiar with Open Tx and if the Rx and Tx recognise their own unique binding signature.

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  3 года назад +2

      Yes they do, by assigning different receiver numbers to each model. If you are not overly familiar with Open TX & Multi-Protocol, there are 3 goto sites I always recommend. First to address your radio match question is Multi-Module.org's site, they have a receiver match page on that site: www.multi-module.org/
      That entire multi-module site is loaded with must know information if you want to get the most out of multi-protocol.
      Next is OpenTX's site to get the basics of the operating system: www.open-tx.org/
      An lastly OpenTX University's site: open-txu.org/
      OpenTX U will show the operational mechanics of how OpenTX works. It was the game changer for me after I was ready to give up when I made the switch from Spektrum & JR.
      OpenTX is a big learning curve for many who are used to traditional pre-configured computerized radios. Some hate it, but once you grasp the basic input, mix, output concept along with all the other features, chances are you'll never go back to a traditional computerized radio. I liken it to switching from a Window's or Mac OS to open source Linux), so do your research on those 3 sites before deciding if you are ready to take the plunge in the deep end of the OpenTX pool . Cheers - J

      I've got a review on the Eachine TX16S coming out on the 2nd of July. It's basically the exact same radio with a few minor differences over the *original Hall* version of the RadioMaster TX16S. Depending on what features you deem important, you may or may not like the Eachine version better. Operation wise however - totally identical radios with the exact same mother boards. *You can't really compare it to a MAX version however* . The MAX version is after all the flagship of the TX16S line up.
