    I am in the process of building a second 280z that I plan to drive a lot. I live in California and have been looking at ways to increase performance on the stock EFI system but also pass California Smog. The modification you did with the intake manifold and porting the runners, will that pass the sniffer test out here?

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  Год назад +2

      The porting of the manifold is totally undetectable from smog testing in both the visual and exhaust emissions test. However, to get the most out of this extra air, you'll need to adjust your AFM to allow a touch of extra fuel under load. This would need to be adjusted back to stock for the test, or it will read rich at the tailpipe.

      @@HooliganGarage-650 Thanks for the response! Looks like I will be going this route. Already have a port and polish job waiting for the head along with a full engine rebuild. Trying to stay smog legal but increase the power as much as possible which I know is very limited with the stock EFI. Did the car run negatively without adjusting the afm?

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  Год назад +1

      @@AnthonyCessor It ran totally fine without the adjustment with a very noticeable power increase above 4500 RPM. I adjusted the AFM wheel about three teeth counter-clockwise and I noticed an increase in low end torque.

      @@HooliganGarage-650 Thanks for the response. Sounds like I will have to do this in combination with port and polishing the head.

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  Год назад +1

      @@AnthonyCessor My manifold was matched to the ports on the head. Stock head ports are 34.5mm, and the manifold runners are 29mm. Bring a fresh manifold gasket with you to the machine shop so they can use that to reference from. However, I would only recommend porting the head if you are going to be running a competitive camshaft with higher compression.

    Nice job, I have a 1978 Datsun 280z 2+2 5speed I would like to do this headers and intake manifold and a cold air intake. Where did you buy your parts from Motorsport

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  Год назад

      The headers were from Motorsport, however the manifold was a custom job performed by a machine shop in my area.

    I’m surprised you were able to take the intake manifold off with the fuel rail. Any issues without the heat shield?

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  2 года назад +2

      Haven't noticed any heat soak without that shield. You might experience some if you remove it while still utilizing the stock large iron exhaust manifold though.

    Hey, hopefully you can answer a question for me. I have a 1981 280zx (NA). It’s got a F54 block with a N42 head. It’s got an exhaust manifold leak and I would like to replace it with a header. Is there a header (square port) that will fit the 81 keeping all emission plugs?

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  3 года назад

      The MSA header (exact one im using) has a version for '75-'76 engines (Factory N42 head) that has an EGR fitting, but no O2 sensor fitting. Your best bet would probably be to buy that one, buy an o2 sensor bung separately hand have it welded in to the cylinder 2 exhaust runner. Any exhaust shop would be able to do that.

    • @dexterstanley4185
      @dexterstanley4185 2 года назад

      @@HooliganGarage-650 so I finally got around to removing my manifold. Turns out that I don’t have an O2 sensor, I guess someone deleted it at some point? Is that possible? The manifold that came off says F54 on it and has square ports as well.

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  2 года назад

      @@dexterstanley4185 Thats strange, all '81 and up should be equipped with an O2 sensor. Is there a plug in the harness anywhere for one? It would be a single terminal connector with a round rubber grommet.

    • @dexterstanley4185
      @dexterstanley4185 2 года назад

      @@HooliganGarage-650 No, there is no plug on the harness. There’s no bung on the manifold either.

    I’m interested I sending my intake manifold to a machine shop I know you said you had it fully ported through the runners to 34.5 mm and 60 mm on the plenum? I’m very new to this and is this what I would ask them to do or is there a better way to say it?

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  8 месяцев назад

      The first step would be to buy the intake manifold gasket for the shop to use as a reference (Each port on the gasket is 34.5mm) and tell them to extrude port the runners to match the size of this gasket. This will involve cutting open the plenum to port the runners all the way through, and then welding it back up. Then instruct them to port the plenum opening (where it meets the throttle body) to 60mm.

  • @johnj2496

    A 98 ish Nissan Altima throttle body will bolt on but is I think 40-45 mm cheap junkyard upgrade I forgot what I had to hook it up to stock ball n socket linkage but wasn't to crazy
    And you should put that Heat shield back exhaust heat on the bottom of intake is not good

    you going to stick an n42 head on it or just build the p79 head? Im assuming its an f54 block with flat top pistons

    • @HooliganGarage-650
      @HooliganGarage-650  3 года назад +1

      '79's come with N47 heads actually, and dished pistons. I'm thinking of a mind street cam with some shaving down the road..

      There's a large sprung screw on the top of the throttle body. This is what sets your idle speed.
