Kratos, the main character, has traveled from Greek mythology to Norse mothology after having killed all the Greek gods at the end of the previous game. That's why he's considered an outsider and an enemy in the Norse realm :) Kratos is considered a Spartan even though his current appearance resembles that of the Norse people.
1.He was also the God of War after he killed Ares, hence the name.
2.We find out later he is a demi-god and Zeus is he's father
3.He also had a family before now; wife and daughter................ he killed them (awkward silence)
4.Watch the "God of war cinematics" on youtube to catch up. God of War 3 is a "Masterpiece"

The original God of War Trilogy was based on Greek Mythology...where he killed all the Gods...this game is set after the events of God of War 3. And it is based on Norse Mythology....

The World serpent is called jormungand he is one of Loki's sons, in the story of Ragnarok which is Armageddon in Norse Mythology Thor battles the World serpent. Jormungand is slain but Thor dies from the venom of the gigantic snake.

from what I've seen, it has a good feel to it, compelling story, not as much as a hack and slash, but feels more depth to it. Having played the others, can honestly say that this feels different compared to other others. Be interesting how his son fits in with the story, not only that seems like there are reminders of his past.

People were not happy with shoulder fixed camera..but I love this.
And the story looks promising.
omesh singh Gameplay looks promising so far. Though at some point I am hoping that maybe Kratos sticks a chain to the end of his axe for old time's sake.
And while I'm all for a calmer, wiser Kratos relearning how to be a parent, I still want a few moments that remind us that he's still the murderous crazy bastard we know and love.

If you have no plans on playing the previous games, allow me to summarize the Trilogy.
God of War
Kratos was a Spartan who became a servant of Ares, the God of War, after he pleaded with him to strike down the barbarian army. Ares seared the chains of the Blades of Chaos into his forearms. From then on Kratos's rage grew and grew, eventually blinding him from the horrors he committed. One night in a raid, Kratos accidentally murdered his wife and daughter. Realizing what he had done, he fell to his knees in despair. As a punishment for what he did, the ashes of his family were bound to his flesh, giving it a white tint. Kratos became known as the Ghost of Sparta. Haunted by nightmares of what he had done, he continued to serve the Gods for 10 years in hope that they would help him. Growing tired of his long servitude, he calls upon Athena. She tells him that he had one final act. Kill Ares who was laying waste to Athens. He heads to the desert to find Pandora's Box, which was hidden in a fortress on the back of the Titan Cronos. It held the power to kill a god. As he approached the box, harpies took the box and brought it to Ares. Kratos confronted Ares and got the box. Ares took the Blades of Chaos away, but Kratos still managed to kill him with the power from Pandora's Box. His deed complete, he awaited his reward, but the Gods refused to rid him of his nightmares. Losing all will to live, he cast himself off a cliff to rid him of his torment. Athena intervened. She presented him with new blades and a seat as the new God of War.
God of War 2
Still haunted by the nightmares of his family, Kratos went on a rampage. Despite the warnings given to him by Athena, he continued to lead the Spartan Army in a siege on Rhodes. A great Colossus came to life and attacked the Spartan Army. Zeus presented the Blade of Olympus to Kratos and told him the only way to defeat the creature was to infuse his godhood into the blade and strike it down. Kratos defeated the Colossus. Now mortal, Zeus appeared and took the blade. He gave Kratos one last chance to pledge his loyalty to the Gods. He refused. Zeus stabbed Kratos in the stomach with the blade, killing him. As he descended to the underworld, Kratos was saved by the titan, Gaia. She wanted revenge on Zeus for their loss in the Great War. She told him that the only way to reverse his death was to seek out the Sisters of Fate. Kratos traveled to the sisters, killed them, and took the loom of fate. He used it to return to the moment right before he died. He took the blade of Olympus from Zeus. Athena warned him that the death of Zeus would be the death of Olympus. He tried to strike him down anyway. Athena jumped in the way, sacrificing herself. Before she died, she told Kratos that he was actually one of Zeus's many children. He tried to kill him fearing that Kratos would turn on him as he had on Cronos and the titans. Using the Loom of Fate once more, Kratos went back to the Great War and save the titans, bringing them to the future. The game ends with Kratos riding on Gaia as the titans scale Mount Olympus.
God of War 3
With Kratos and the titans climbing Mount Olympus Poseidon launches an attack, but it killed by Kratos. As the titans reach the peak Zeus knocks the titans down. Gaia manages to grab hold of the mountain but refuses to help Kratos, calling him a pawn. He falls into the River Styx and loses the Blade of Olympus. The souls of the dead weaken him and ruin the Blades of Athena.The Spirit of Athena appears to Kratos. She tells him that she has gained a higher existence and sees the truth: As long as Zeus rules, there is no hope for mankind. She gives him the Blades of Exile. She tells him that to kill Zeus, he must put out the Flame of Olympus. After encountering Hephaestus and regaining the Blade of Olympus, he kills Hades, freeing the souls of the dead from the Underworld. Once he leaves and reaches Olympia, Kratos encounters Gaia calling for help. He severs her arm and she falls from Olympus. Kratos kills the titan Perses and Helios. Hermes taunts him and leads him to the Chamber of the Flame. Inside the flame is Pandora's Box, which is once again the key to victory. Athena appears and tells him that only Pandora can put out the flames. Kratos continues after Hermes and kills him, releasing a plague. Kratos runs into a drunken Hera asking for Pandora's location. She denies his request and summons Hercules. Kratos kills him. He then meets Aphrodite and she leads him to Hephaestus through Hyperion's Gate. He sends Kratos to retrieve a stone to forge a new weapon. Kratos kills Cronos to obtain it. After Hephaestus forges the weapon he attempts to kill Kratos, trying to protect his daughter Pandora. He tells him she is in the Labyrinth. Kratos enters Hyperion's gate to Hera's Gardens. He kills Hera and makes his way to the Labyrinth. Kratos finds Pandora and raises her to her box. Zeus appears and fight Kratos. Pandora sacrifices herself to put out the flame. Kratos opens the box only to find it empty. Gaia appears to kill them both and Kratos and Zeus continue their fight inside Gaia. Gaia is killed when Zeus gets stabbed and pinned to Gaia's heart, which also kills Zeus. As Kratos tries to leave, Zeus's spirit appears and fights Kratos, after weakening him. Just as Zeus is about to land the final blow Pandora appears to Kratos in his mind along with his wife and daughter. Kratos forgives himself for his past sins and gains the power of hope. He then beats Zeus to death with his bare hands. Athena then appears, asking Kratos to give back what was hers. When Zeus sealed the evils away, she put hope in the box as well. When he opened the box to defeat Ares, the evils were released and infected the Gods. Hope was imbued inside of Kratos. Athena asks him to give hope back to her, for she knew how to rebuild the world with it. Not trusting her, Kratos stabs himself with the Blade of Olympus and releases hope into the world so that it may heal. Kratos then bleeds out on the ground. Furious, Athena leaves empty handed. In an after credits scene, it is shown that Kratos survived. They showed a trail of blood leading off screen and an absent Kratos.
God of War 4
In the new game coming out, it is assumed that many years have passed since the 3rd game. Kratos has since had a son who was born and raised in the land of Norse Mythology. That's why the son understands the World Serpent and Kratos does not. This is supposed to be a redeeming story for Kratos as well as a new beginning.

Jaby you can consider this a soft reboot of God Of War. Not a complete reboot as it is in continuation to the previous ones but this is going in a different direction. I have only played GOW 1 and some parts of 2. After that I've missed out on the story a lot (I never had a PS3 and never bought the PS4 remasters). The previous games were based on Greek mythology, this one is based on Norse mythology (First Zues and now Thor! Too many thunder gods, don't you think? 😅).
Btw, notice that gigantic rock structure at 1:45? I think that's Thor's hammer Mjolnir. Maybe Thor's a titan!?

This one takes place in Norse Mythology. The Greek mythology story ended in Gow 3 where kratos killed Zeus.

This game alone is going to make me get an PS4. Jaby if your going to play the older God of War games for story, start with GOW 1, then "Ghost of Sparta", then GOW 2 and 3. There's also "Ascension" and "Chains of Olympus" but you can skip those in terms of story.

God of WaR 3 remastered for PS4 was my favorite. I can't wait. Me and my family have been playing it for years just like the Uncharted Trilogy and Assassin's Creed's🔥
the game is set in Norse mythology, in god of war 3 kratos puts an end to the Greek gods. So this is more like a reboot of the franchise set in Norse mythology
God of war 1,2,& 3 were all about, how kratos destroys entire panthion of Greek gods.
Now some how he enters into the realm of norse gods... The realm of odin, thor etc. This god of war starts from where it ends in god of war 3.
She is pretty observant, the pottery was Greek Kratos is a Spartan ,and it is now set in Norse mythology pretty good not knowing god of war shows they did a good job.

Cratos was a soldier of sparta who was chosen bij aries to become his warmonger chief. But bye becoming this aries betraied cratos and killed his famely (wife and doughter) in revenge cratos began killing all the god of olymp. Hence u c him with his blades on the greek vace. Now in this game he has gotten a new fam and a new child. Hence the mother says this is not your past this is your son. Cratos tries to be the father he never was for his old fam. in a way to redeem himself. i dont know but i suspect that his journey in this game has something to do with the missing mother in the game (u c her when all is good in the trailers but i think that is the main reason cratos and the kid are on the journey

If Zeus was a bad ass in the past God of war now imagine how much of a bad ass Odin is goin to be for him if they have a conflict assuming they going that way I see a bunch of wolf so Fenrir is definitely a boss the Norse mythology is more brutal then the Greek myth

Just a guess guys. I dont want to be an spoiler but I think in this part of God Of War. In the end, his son will be controlled by a dark spirit that his son cannot awake from and Kratos will have no choice but to fight his Son to the death and eventually have to kill his own Son. Sad to say, Kratos search for peace and calmness would never be over... Very sad but a good story line for this God of War 4. Makes me sad just to think of it. What do U think guys? Would love to hear your comment.

Thanks for the comment Alex Black and Ankit Sai Sri... It's the only reason i can think of, in what will make Kratos go on to a Rampage with the Norse Gods. Or even vice versa, Kratos will find peace in the hands of his Son, while his son will be filled with hatred and vengeance with the death of his father Kratos by his hand and will start to seek revenge on God of War 5. He will search for the Norse God that took over his mind which ended Kratos life by his hand during their fight. I imagine the Son would be fully grown having the power of the Double Sword attached to the chains bringing the old Kratos fighting style back and alive again on God of War 5. So many outcome and results can happen after the Father and Son fight. Cheers to that anyway if it that would be the story.

If you haven't played any of the games, you should probably at least watch the previous trailer to this game. It does a lot more to set up the character relationship and the world than this one.
