    Recently I got a little sniffle and cough. I rubbed a little cal/mag behind my ears at midnight during a full moon. By morning I was cured of every known disease in mankind's history and when I looked in the mirror it was a 25 year old Brad Pitt staring back at me. Then my wife did LST on me and brought me back to reality.

    Well boys, back in the 70'-80'-90's we had GREAT smelling weed here in the mid-west !! No jewelers loop, no fancy cure bags, and no controlled dry rooms. We grew 30-40 lbs a year, and IMO genetics were MUCH better then for determining smell. A slow cure will help but proper drying and storage is very important too !! I will say though HEAT is your enemy after harvest !! Skunk, Early Girl, Big Bud, and Purple !! Hybridization has taken it's toll !!

    We dry at 60-65 degrees & 55-60 RH. We had hay smell for only two days, then trimmed off all the fan leaves. Dried for 10 days, the snap test was good before trimming. Cured in jars with Boveda packs & hygrometers. Burped once per day and rolled the contents around. If RH was too high, we'd leave them uncovered for 1-2 hours. Friends & family gave us rave reviews.

    • @cptwhoopazz
      @cptwhoopazz 4 месяца назад +4

      I felt the same way. As far as fool proof I think you HAVE to nail your dry 60%rh consistent conditions, air flow, low temps. Small buds pop off fairly easy.

    • @jamiewatson491
      @jamiewatson491 4 месяца назад +1

      54% dew point. This has been proven by the cannatrol inventor and that's why they use those suggested parameters of temp and rh to achieve 54% dew point. If you want to work out dew point for your dry room then use a dew point calculator online in Fahrenheit, just input 2 variables to give the 3rd as answer so 54 dew degrees Fahrenheit, 70 rh gives 64 degrees Fahrenheit temps. The proven science is there just needs digging out. Hope that helps and happy growing. And they gave you the answers to be fool proof you just need to know which 1 it is and only you can work that out because it's you who is growing and looking after the plant harvesting it lol

    • @gmolorin6529
      @gmolorin6529 4 месяца назад

      @@jamiewatson491 I did as you suggested. I checked what the dew point was for 60ºF and 60%RH, the usual recommendation for drying/curing for 16+ days, yields a dew point of 46ºF, quite a bit lower than your recommendation of 54ºF for dew point. I don't own a cannatrol, but I think I've heard they use varying temps/RH at different stages. It just seems so ridiculous that one must spend $2K to keep from ruining their harvest. I will consider what you said because with an heater, humidifier and a portable a/c unit, I can get my grow area at basically any temp and RH, therefore any dew point rather easily. I can do this with a/c in summer and the heater in winter. I live in AZ and do not turn on the house heat all or maybe once during a winter, and the house stays in the 60s naturally.

    • @jamiewatson491
      @jamiewatson491 4 месяца назад +1

      @@gmolorin6529 64/70 temp/rh will give 54%. The canatrol does yes but only for the beginning for drying and to reduce the dew point to prevent mould then the process begins, its setting fluctuation is because it has a wet pad that dries up and needs to be re soaked when dry to keep the process going. Also remember its for both drying and curing/storing. When I see the price I nearly had a heart attack myself. If you got the NIWA like you said you pretty much have the tools and just need to input the parameters better with automation though. Give it a try and see if it improved/preserved the flavour. Hope that helps and happy growing 😊

    Rob says, “we can’t all have cannatrols” why not? I’ve made a couple of them now. I started with a wine fridge, worked ok. Upped the scale to a 20 cu ft fridge with pid controller/humidifier/dehumidifier and the bud cures perfectly and stores forever (at least a year +). Growing requires a bit of creativity, instead of getting an a/c unit attached to an un- insulated grow tent for cure, hang those branches inside a humidity/temperature controlled “home made cannatrol.”

    How do people ensure temperature and humidity control during cure if they don't have a big grow system where that's built in? Especially hard in summer if there is no cooling system in the house and you simply have no place besides the moist basement where it's below 25-35c° and it would catch mold in there quickly, so what to do? 15-20c° _+_ 40-60 RH is so hard to achieve if it's not winter.

    I’ve found that if I can dial in my rh to 50-60% and not get too warm you will get some great terps with a long enough dry time. If u can keep and stay close to 60% u can even have it start curing if u can’t trim right away

    i had actually gotten hay smell before harvest on a really dense plant that was a herm and got full of seeds it had started to smell like it was almost fermenting or just a bad hay like smell when i had dried it the smell was there when i would break a nug though the strain had a sweet pineapple smell but it eventually all turned real hay like again in jar i believe it was due to its sweet light terp profile with maybe improper weather conditions towards end of harvest for the dense buds and maybe pollination plays a role in the terps too. maybe somehow the plant started to degrade and ferment as like hay somehow in the flowering! some other ways you can get it is due to un even bud drying, improper drying conditions, bad curing conditions(too wet or dry buds and burping too much as well), that's most of them i can think of off the top but if you make sure all of these are in check you should be good and make sure you weren't growing an unknown strain with just possibly weak genetics like i was buy from a good breeder you know has the gas!

      was mad though i was smelling that dense plant in flower hoping for good terp and it was just getting a bad hay smell develope on it at least it had some terps in the buds after breaking them for a while i know it would have been a really good candy pineapple strain but got ruined somehow in flower before even pulling the plant from soil! only time that ever happend though and dont know what i did wrong also was first grow with probably a way too heavy soil mix which consisted of half pure black top soil and half cow and sheep manure and peat mix which i believed just was way too heavy with water and probably was killing the plant from the inside also didnt give the right npks for the stages and so those are a few more things make sure you have a light mix forsure help those roots for good tasting fruit!

    • @braedannicoloff5210
      @braedannicoloff5210 4 месяца назад

      if i had to say what causes this hay smell in general it isnt terps exactly but the fermentation and degradation of the flowers either due to root rot and just a heavy mix in flower and improper npk balances or just a balanced like 444 isnt as good and then also make sure everything about your dry and cure is in check such as temp and humidity and then also the moisture in your buds being good when it goes into the jar other wise you will run into this fermentaion process which is what i would expect this to exactly be causing this or atleast thats what i found when i have gotten it!

    I'm team Pigeon re Grove bags. I've tried them with and w/o Boveda packs for cure and there was no difference in humidity since the bud went in properly dried. I monitored over several weeks and never had to burp, just like they say, the bags maintained the perfect humidity so no Mason dance for me. Not hating on any method that works for anyone, but IMHO nothing is simpler than putting bud in bag and done. - Thanks as always for the great info my friends. 💚

    I agree with Chris that a fast dry, too much nitrogen in th bloom cycle will give the "Hay" smell.

    Moisture content is just the total amount of water in a flower (10% ish). Water activity is a metric to express the availability of excess water there is, that isn't engaged in some sort of polymer reaction necessary for the flower to do its thing (presumably curing), and the water activity (aW) is expressed on a scale from 0.00aW - 1.00aW. Where 0 is no water and 1 is pure water. Regulatory science smarties use aW because it's that excess water that will make the mold and other nasty organisms. I think 0.6 is the safe zone, so 0.4 doesn't sound too crazy for regulatory overkill. Would be interesting to know more about environmental conditions of the testing labs. How cold it is etc.

    Okay so here's a random question. You end up with hay smelling product. Do you throw it or do you smoke it? I know what I'm doing whether I like it or not. I'm not going to throw away a pound of weed that just isn't going to happen, but at the same time it could smell better and it could definitely taste better but technically there's nothing wrong with it For personal use in my opinion if I was selling it that would be a different story. What's your opinion on it? Do you throw it or do you smoke it?

    I can say i grew about 6 gmo x straw guava and a few had almost zero terps even while growing while halitosis black lime reserve and one of my varieties all were dank obviously grown and dried cured the same. Personally i think the hay smell is normal for these super polyhybrids in comparison to finding a true potent pheno in taste smell and effects. The older varieties seem to have a higher terps flavanoids thiols etc percentage which seem to increase effect but although anecdotal i have tried added cannabis derived terpenes in concentrate fourm and it seems to work differently you cant add chem taste to cookies and it effect u like a chem at least not with my chemistry.

Burp and bring down humidity according to how you like to smoke it! Moister weed tends to be less "Haylike". Find your own "Sweetspot"!
