How do people ensure temperature and humidity control during cure if they don't have a big grow system where that's built in? Especially hard in summer if there is no cooling system in the house and you simply have no place besides the moist basement where it's below 25-35c° and it would catch mold in there quickly, so what to do? 15-20c° _+_ 40-60 RH is so hard to achieve if it's not winter.
@@Killuminati23 I time my grows to be curing during fall or end of winter where temperatures are cooler that way I never have to worry about high temperatures.
When it came to curing. Before Grove bags I used to use an air pump and manifold. Running an air tube to each giant Mason jar. The pump was set up to a timer twice a day to pump fresh air in and purge old air out. It worked great! For my next giant harvest probably this year. I'll break it back out again for some to test the difference between masons and Grove! For science!
Gotta think about how terps evaporate under a vacuum. If they're anything like solvents in a purging chamber they'll probably get sucked rightt out ur herb
Day 6 of my first dry. No hay smell. I can only smell them when I'm nose close. 67, 58%. Leaves close to the bottom of the plant are almost crispy, the ones on the top buds are not there yet.
I’ve had the hay smell from harvests before. Every time it happened was cuz the harvest dried too fast (too low RH) Like 3 days fast. I’ve even had herb turn out okay with a 5 day dry as long as I got them into jars before the stems could snap. I’ve found that if I can dial in my rh to 50-60% and not get too warm you will get some great terps with a long enough dry time. If u can keep and stay close to 60% u can even have it start curing if u can’t trim right away
My first two grows I dried and cured the traditional way, 60x60 and mason jars...then Cannatrol came on my radar...$$$, Yes, however, the device is a game changer for me, now on grow #7. I hope to never have to go back =))! I have since added Grove Bags when Cannatrol is in use...I store them in a wine fridge....works! Thanks for all you guys do!
I cure in a normal mylar bag and seal it with a iron every time i take out something to smoke. I’ve stuff for 3-4month that burns white and flavour from start to finish
Yeah, I had that problem once I had too much moisture. I just left it out on a rack for at least 12 hours for two days separate days remember and that fix the problem and then continue caring it and make sure it’s at 65 or 60 a little bit. Terps.
i had actually gotten hay smell before harvest on a really dense plant that was a herm and got full of seeds it had started to smell like it was almost fermenting or just a bad hay like smell when i had dried it the smell was there when i would break a nug though the strain had a sweet pineapple smell but it eventually all turned real hay like again in jar i believe it was due to its sweet light terp profile with maybe improper weather conditions towards end of harvest for the dense buds and maybe pollination plays a role in the terps too. maybe somehow the plant started to degrade and ferment as like hay somehow in the flowering! some other ways you can get it is due to un even bud drying, improper drying conditions, bad curing conditions(too wet or dry buds and burping too much as well), that's most of them i can think of off the top but if you make sure all of these are in check you should be good and make sure you weren't growing an unknown strain with just possibly weak genetics like i was buy from a good breeder you know has the gas!
was mad though i was smelling that dense plant in flower hoping for good terp and it was just getting a bad hay smell develope on it at least it had some terps in the buds after breaking them for a while i know it would have been a really good candy pineapple strain but got ruined somehow in flower before even pulling the plant from soil! only time that ever happend though and dont know what i did wrong also was first grow with probably a way too heavy soil mix which consisted of half pure black top soil and half cow and sheep manure and peat mix which i believed just was way too heavy with water and probably was killing the plant from the inside also didnt give the right npks for the stages and so those are a few more things make sure you have a light mix forsure help those roots for good tasting fruit!
if i had to say what causes this hay smell in general it isnt terps exactly but the fermentation and degradation of the flowers either due to root rot and just a heavy mix in flower and improper npk balances or just a balanced like 444 isnt as good and then also make sure everything about your dry and cure is in check such as temp and humidity and then also the moisture in your buds being good when it goes into the jar other wise you will run into this fermentaion process which is what i would expect this to exactly be causing this or atleast thats what i found when i have gotten it!
have had it in flower, dry and cure it does suck but you can over come it in dry and cure if properly dealt with early if it was due to root rot in flower your outside smell might just be ruined but you learn from mistakes too good growing everyone hope yall never have to deal with it and beat the hay!
Love the show. Wanted to ask you what would cause 4 different strains to smell the same when not smoked? There is no hay smell and doesn’t smell like green plant. It’s an ok smell but not what’s expected from the strains description. Did a 60-60 dry with no complications with ac infinity products. The smoke is very smooth and good. Very frosty. I have a video.
Come to find out the buds were stored in a jar in a dark area but the temperature was always 74 degrees. Before they went in the jar they had good individual smells.
P that hat is 🔥 I hang dry and try to make it take as long as possible. I even water a few hours before harvesting. No matter what i do it ends up drying at 65 to 70 f° and 55 to 65 rh for about 14 to 21 days and mine stinks to high heaven. I cure in jars for 2 to 3 weeks and its ready to rock. Ill pop a humidity pack (62%) in after a week or two that ive moistened to a true 62. Im able to hold it without degradation as long as it takes to smoke it all. Mine is never as dry or tasteless as dispos. Growing your own allows you to skip the time of testing and packaging, sitting on a shelf, etc. And get fresh product. One brand at dispos around here sells all their ganj in grove bags so i save and reuse them too, using quart and gallon jars for longer/girthier nugs.
So 60 deg F / 60% RH is a VPD of 0.71 kPa. What if you hit that same VPD with your drying space at 50 deg F, 43% RH. Would that be a better dry as you save more Terps at lower temp?
When I dry my bud I get the room sorted temp and rrh then it's takes 12 _14 day's in the dark left alone then when I can pinch a bud and hear the crunch on it she's done ..trim then in the masons jars and burped 2 times a day for about a week to 10 days then once a week for 2 . I then store in the jars below 23c in the dark . I've even had bud I've bought that smelt a bit dead but after being put 8n a jar smells banging .my pal is terrible for storing bud in carrier bags plastic ones lol 😆
The Grove bags are pointless and imo fake bullshit the so called technology. When dried to a certain humidity / moisture content just like you're supposed to with the bags I then store my flower in jars and food grade pails and it stays at the same 62% humidity with no humidity packs (more unnecessary stuff) for the year it takes for a pail of my outdoor to be done. I work in a dispensary here in Canada and when I give my regular customers my home grown to try they say the terps are insane and the flower is sooooo much better than anything we sell. There's so many things in the cannabis space that are not needed and yet they've made ppl think they acrually help things.

I'm team Pigeon re Grove bags. I've tried them with and w/o Boveda packs for cure and there was no difference in humidity since the bud went in properly dried. Not hating on any method that works for anyone, but IMHO nothing is simpler than putting bud in bag and done. - Thanks as always for the great info my friends. 💚
So for those that can’t completely control there temp and humidity for dry and cure what would be the acceptable range to dry and cure? Currently I dried in 69-71 degrees with a relative humidity of 55-60 for 1week and 2 days then had to cure til now
i think a lot of dispos over dry and cure for only 10 days. sometimes it still has a little green taste. but around here its usually no taste. well generic work weed taste unless you spend 60 a eight.
the "Hay" smell seems to be the Chlorophyll has not broken down yet. When drying, slow and steady will preserve your terps. 65 Degrees F and 55 - 60 % humidity. I agree with Chris that a fast dry, too much nitrogen in th bloom cycle will give the "Hay" smell.
i dry to 13-18% with a moisture meter then cure until its done each strain i have done this year have all been different % after putting in grove bags thats why i said 13-18% cause not all where good at 18
Moisture content is just the total amount of water in a flower (10% ish). Water activity is a metric to express the availability of excess water there is, that isn't engaged in some sort of polymer reaction necessary for the flower to do its thing (presumably curing), and the water activity (aW) is expressed on a scale from 0.00aW - 1.00aW. Where 0 is no water and 1 is pure water. Regulatory science smarties use aW because it's that excess water that will make the mold and other nasty organisms. I think 0.6 is the safe zone, so 0.4 doesn't sound too crazy for regulatory overkill. Would be interesting to know more about environmental conditions of the testing labs. How cold it is etc.

Okay so here's a random question. You end up with hay smelling product. Do you throw it or do you smoke it? I know what I'm doing whether I like it or not. I'm not going to throw away a pound of weed that just isn't going to happen, but at the same time it could smell better and it could definitely taste better but technically there's nothing wrong with it For personal use in my opinion if I was selling it that would be a different story. What's your opinion on it? Do you throw it or do you smoke it?

In my experience, when buds are ready they will be greasy with terps on the outside. Harvest and go directly to dark sixty percent humidity to keep em that way. Dry slowly. Patience is the key.
My Herbs Now drier is the way. I bought two because they work so well. I have done side my side dries and there is absolutely every reason to use a My Herbs Now drier and absolutely no reason not to. Talk to the owner, Scott.
So I'm on day 7 of drying in my tent. I'm at 63° and 58-62 humidity steady. No alarms with change in environment. Still smells like hay, but starting to smell like piss.
I can say i grew about 6 gmo x straw guava and a few had almost zero terps even while growing while halitosis black lime reserve and one of my varieties all were dank obviously grown and dried cured the same. Personally i think the hay smell is normal for these super polyhybrids in comparison to finding a true potent pheno in taste smell and effects. The older varieties seem to have a higher terps flavanoids thiols etc percentage which seem to increase effect but although anecdotal i have tried added cannabis derived terpenes in concentrate fourm and it seems to work differently you cant add chem taste to cookies and it effect u like a chem at least not with my chemistry.
I have to disagree when you guys said that the hay smell can come from not flushing properly because I've had it happen to me with one jar (from the same plant)
Everybody needs to treat their weed like a good cigar! Good humidor humidity is 70-80% I try to harvest my weed in the High 70's using a hygrometer as a reference. Burp and bring down humidity according to how you like to smoke it! Moister weed tends to be less "Haylike". Find your own "Sweetspot"!

@@TerpEyezz yes I agree but in my opinion weed cured in groove bags at 55 rH would still have better smell and taste than weed cured at 62rH in a jar for the majority of us.
I challenge any of these 3 guys to try Herbsnow dryer. Would love to see what they think. $200 dollars will be well spent.I bought to dry breeded seed crops but works so well it is the only way I dry now.
For science🎉🎉🎉🎉😂
Gotta think about how terps evaporate under a vacuum. If they're anything like solvents in a purging chamber they'll probably get sucked rightt out ur herb
@@TimJameson-jg8sl my favorite phrase
Day 6 of my first dry. No hay smell. I can only smell them when I'm nose close. 67, 58%. Leaves close to the bottom of the plant are almost crispy, the ones on the top buds are not there yet.
Grove bag I did jars for 30+yrs but these bags are amazing
They are until you open and close them a few times and the zip seal rips off the bag
@@talkingmyshhhtv then cut the bags up to fit in the mason jars instead of the metal top.
Rob ever time you say head banger I take a dab all love bro and you guys actually got me into growing. Growing Notorious THC week 2 flower
I never thought about hay smell coming from pulling too early! Always love stopping in to learn something new, thanks for another great one guys
That was a damn entertaining show guys.
I cure in a normal mylar bag and seal it with a iron every time i take out something to smoke. I’ve stuff for 3-4month that burns white and flavour from start to finish
Great topic you have here. 👍 I love my jars but I have done and would use grove bags.
Chris, love the frost giant shirt and smoking the magic candy mountain OG now, sweet colab! Keep up the great work guys!
Yeah, I had that problem once I had too much moisture. I just left it out on a rack for at least 12 hours for two days separate days remember and that fix the problem and then continue caring it and make sure it’s at 65 or 60 a little bit. Terps.
Ive switched to grove bags from jars as well! I love the grove bags!!
I use both. Mason has for outdoor harvests and grovebags for indoor harvest
Great to see the uprage a lil on the dispo stuff. Also a jar man. Great to see you all together again!
I’ll do the dry test! Will let you know this winter
i had actually gotten hay smell before harvest on a really dense plant that was a herm and got full of seeds it had started to smell like it was almost fermenting or just a bad hay like smell when i had dried it the smell was there when i would break a nug though the strain had a sweet pineapple smell but it eventually all turned real hay like again in jar i believe it was due to its sweet light terp profile with maybe improper weather conditions towards end of harvest for the dense buds and maybe pollination plays a role in the terps too. maybe somehow the plant started to degrade and ferment as like hay somehow in the flowering! some other ways you can get it is due to un even bud drying, improper drying conditions, bad curing conditions(too wet or dry buds and burping too much as well), that's most of them i can think of off the top but if you make sure all of these are in check you should be good and make sure you weren't growing an unknown strain with just possibly weak genetics like i was buy from a good breeder you know has the gas!
was mad though i was smelling that dense plant in flower hoping for good terp and it was just getting a bad hay smell develope on it at least it had some terps in the buds after breaking them for a while i know it would have been a really good candy pineapple strain but got ruined somehow in flower before even pulling the plant from soil! only time that ever happend though and dont know what i did wrong also was first grow with probably a way too heavy soil mix which consisted of half pure black top soil and half cow and sheep manure and peat mix which i believed just was way too heavy with water and probably was killing the plant from the inside also didnt give the right npks for the stages and so those are a few more things make sure you have a light mix forsure help those roots for good tasting fruit!
if i had to say what causes this hay smell in general it isnt terps exactly but the fermentation and degradation of the flowers either due to root rot and just a heavy mix in flower and improper npk balances or just a balanced like 444 isnt as good and then also make sure everything about your dry and cure is in check such as temp and humidity and then also the moisture in your buds being good when it goes into the jar other wise you will run into this fermentaion process which is what i would expect this to exactly be causing this or atleast thats what i found when i have gotten it!
have had it in flower, dry and cure it does suck but you can over come it in dry and cure if properly dealt with early if it was due to root rot in flower your outside smell might just be ruined but you learn from mistakes too good growing everyone hope yall never have to deal with it and beat the hay!
You youngsters crack me up sometimes ❤
Top stuff lads great episode 👏 🇮🇪💚🇮🇪
Love the show. Wanted to ask you what would cause 4 different strains to smell the same when not smoked? There is no hay smell and doesn’t smell like green plant. It’s an ok smell but not what’s expected from the strains description. Did a 60-60 dry with no complications with ac infinity products. The smoke is very smooth and good. Very frosty. I have a video.
Come to find out the buds were stored in a jar in a dark area but the temperature was always 74 degrees. Before they went in the jar they had good individual smells.
P that hat is 🔥
I hang dry and try to make it take as long as possible.
Rob, I agree it is hard to find grow info that isn't funded by a certain product.
Love the pod ❤️🔥
Great show
So 60 deg F / 60% RH is a VPD of 0.71 kPa. What if you hit that same VPD with your drying space at 50 deg F, 43% RH. Would that be a better dry as you save more Terps at lower temp?
What is a good temperature to store your buds long-term???
When I dry my bud I get the room sorted temp and rrh then it's takes 12 _14 day's in the dark left alone then when I can pinch a bud and hear the crunch on it she's done ..trim then in the masons jars and burped 2 times a day for about a week to 10 days then once a week for 2 . I then store in the jars below 23c in the dark . I've even had bud I've bought that smelt a bit dead but after being put 8n a jar smells banging .my pal is terrible for storing bud in carrier bags plastic ones lol 😆
grove bags have a higher floor, glass has a higher ceiling though
Grove bags FTW !!
I ❤ The Grove bags
Been doing jars for 40 years but I would like to try grove bags they look like a good product
@@Dopefoot wow pump the breaks bud everyone got a way they do things the taste is in the puddin dont matter how you do it. im from canada to its hard to do good outdoor here so good job bud im sure your weed smokes nice
@@Josh-ye4tx I'm not saying if you use grove bags, your stuffs garbage or anything. I'm saying It's not needed, like this so-called special technology and stuff in my opinion is bull. It's not doing anything special. Humidity Packs if you use them cool but theyre not needed with properly dried flower sealed in an airtight container/jar as I've done both and figured out it holds that humidity / moisture content by its self.
@@Dopefoot ok cool man what strains you grow if you dont mind me asking im in ontario and i have a biscotti i grow every year it done early october and never have problems with pm and it washes well
@@Josh-ye4tx New strains every year. This year I have Banana Bubble Blast, Purple Kush, Alaskan Thunder Fk, Durga Mata II CBD, Rockstar Fast Flowering which should be done next week, White Widow, Purple Lamborghini x (Dosido x Animal Cookies), Triple Scoop.
So far nothing has WPM. Usually I throw out a plant or two every year for getting WPM but so far nothing not even a speck this year 🤞🏾
Cool you have a biscotti that works for ya, always great to find those that work in your area.
@@Dopefoot thats dope
I'm team Pigeon re Grove bags. I've tried them with and w/o Boveda packs for cure and there was no difference in humidity since the bud went in properly dried. I monitored over several weeks and never had to burp, just like they say, the bags maintained the perfect humidity so no Mason dance for me. Not hating on any method that works for anyone, but IMHO nothing is simpler than putting bud in bag and done. - Thanks as always for the great info my friends. 💚
CANNATROL BABY!! BEST INVESTMENT TO DATE!!! 💯 GOOD EPISODE GUYS!!
Does a senescence that happens sooner in flower stress the potential of terps in the long run?
When watering plants from bottom can you over water .
the "Hay" smell seems to be the Chlorophyll has not broken down yet. When drying, slow and steady will preserve your terps. 65 Degrees F and 55 - 60 % humidity.
I agree with Chris that a fast dry, too much nitrogen in th bloom cycle will give the "Hay" smell.
Rob-what kind of blunts are you rockin?
Honestly banger of a video, felt like chilling with the grow bros
I just picked up some brand new bags made by bovida this weekend at the nj canna convention. Much thicker than grove bags gonna give them a try.
I grow for consumption of the flower and not for extract manufacturing. There has to be at least a few Amber trichomes for harvest at the min.
i go for most cloudy…sometimes when most are cloudy there are very little amber and sometimes there are more
@@timsmyth7942 Nice, the Trichome cycle as I know it is Clear to Milky to Amber. Maybe this helps a new grower that happens to read this.
Cannatrol cannot loose, put it that way lol, perfect i's an understatement compared to using a tent with a dehu and humu
i dry to 13-18% with a moisture meter then cure until its done each strain i have done this year have all been different % after putting in grove bags thats why i said 13-18% cause not all where good at 18
I use mylar bags in 5 gallon buckets. I get way too much herb to use jars.
I only use bovida packs when I open a jar for the week to keep it fresh
Hey Scotty do you add perlite to your Cana coco or just straight coco thanks .
65% is the mold threshold that's why boveda offers 64% moisture packs to play it safe with 1% below the threshold
Man you guys were on point but I will tell you you might not want to smoke as much as that fire so early in the game because man I was over here laughing watching y'all struggle trying to stay focused that must have been some fire.
Grove Bags for the Win.
Always way for the stems to snap in my opinion it’s drying too fast will lead to the hay smell
Where do we get stash blend in QC?
IF ever visiting AZ hit me up. I can ensure that you get access to quality flower. It has taken me years to find out where to buy the good flower at a low cost.
Same😂 Then after God knows how much money I've spent..since the mid 90s I finally started growing cause I figured out even if the flower is meh, I can make edibles rso oil or edibles
@TimJameson-jg8sl When I get a bag of some stuff that I just don't like smoking, I keep it around. there is always someone lookin and it might be good smoke to someone else. "The SnickleFritz" lol

Tryn grove bags this havest with my cherry pie...just put them in it got pound bags n ozs...hope it doesnt mess with the cure
Got too hot in the last couple weeks of flower and during the dry.
Just how long will it last in jar and what size for just an oz
I find the pint jars hold about an Oz give or take a litle depending on how your flower grows
As far as how long it stays good idk but I just found a jar from a harvest last Halloween so thats 10 months from the chop and it was still good actually I thought the smoke was smoother now then 6 months ago
But I have always done atleast a 2 month cure, you know other than the sampling that sometimes starts b4 you even harvest but certainly towards the end of drying but I put the majority of the harvest up for 2 months
@chuckbailey6835 thank you on the jars . I just hope I can fill hahah thank you
Not enough information on the reason why it happens.. for whatever reason it happens to me sometimes in the Summer when it’s extremely hot outside, however it never happens with my winter grow.

10:45
I had 2 glasses with the same
One had leaves on it
The other didnt
The one with the leaves on, were smelling like that
Maybe its that
I cut now more early and cut off all leaves before glass
Put in freezer gently lol after dry&cured ,itll stay freshh fer yearsno turnin dark🤮
almost a half an hour in and you guys haven't given any info on how to prevent hay smell. you've been arguing about RH and water activity in plants. so we have to spend $2K on a cannatrol...bs.
Without a doubt my old dry tent is my veg tent so I can do a perpetual harvest
💯💯💯💯
Herbsnow dryer don't waste my time with another way!
So I'm on day 7 of drying in my tent. I'm at 63° and 58-62 humidity steady. No alarms with change in environment. Still smells like hay, but starting to smell like piss.
And what terps did they have right b4 chop? Piss?
Chris I saw one of your episodes about cannatrol trough and I went out and bought myself one
2011 terps 9.2% now2.9% anyway all right…love for the content I think we need thc cbd and terps in all strains phenos my experience
When ppl say stop nitrogen. How many weekw into flower we talking because alot of base nutrients of nitrogen in it.
Ac infinity doesn’t do cannatrol , so repurposed wine cooler with 69 controller
rh50-55 temp60-65 deg 10 day its like 14-16% moisture and still hay. i use terp lock bags for cure. help
I enjoy your content! Why don't you guys do an episode where you are smoking some and explain the scents, smells, and effect it has... on several strains... Maybe some Indica Dominant vs Sativa Dominant or maybe Mr. Grow It's Chiller OG? You could give us your take on some good smoke to try... Anyways, just keep up the good work!!!
Love those mason jars
Alaska dispo is way too dried out, making crappy fast smoking joints. I've had good luck with rehydrating in my humidador, flavor comes back and smokes right.
I think coffee's a good analogy most people are happy with gas station crap and there's a few weirdos that go to the extra ...
