i imagine as with any mining, it makes perfect sense as you advance forward you place some timbers above you in case of collapse just as you can still see today in the old mines like Cerro Gordo and the hundreds of old mines across the US being explored today, hundreds of years of mining has changed very little what i do find intreaging is the completed tunnel with its concrete block finish, and the apurtures for new tunnels, with a wall of rock not yet curved out, and then a small rectangular entrence into a new larger tunnel, lots of unfinished systems, just seems an odd way to tunnel i suspect as the tunnels moved forward, a large wooden former would be errected so as the block work advanced behind, the new tunnel entrances would mark the layout for the next tunnels, rails placed so that trains and carts can be brought in, loaded and remove the spoil from the new tunnels left and right of the main tunnel, but i just don't quite get the small rectangular entries, unless the tunnel was dug from the other side, and this entry became a joining tunnel i think at 22:00 on i understand the construction a little better, it seems like they dug a small rectangular passage, this then opens to full width and the concrete walls are built extending forward, then as you begin to carve out above you place the beams to build a floor, extent the concrete over head over a wooden former and keep advancing, pretty clever and fairly straight forward i can't help but think of the poor souls who dug this out, probably by hand too PS Tino if that is lime, its not a good habitat for your bat friends, thanks for sharing and thanks to those chaps granting you permission

If these sites were actually constructed for the reasons given and engineered just to withstand aerial bombing by the RAF, don't you think they're over engineered? Infantry soldiers dug in on the frontline are subjected to all manner of artillery and aerial bombardments and survive unscathed using far less sophisticated trenches than these massive concrete structures. These look like early atomic bunkers in my opinion.
