Back in the 80's my folks neighbor had A 555. He was A general contractor and worked her hard. Never had A problem as far as I know. The neighborhood was sad to see him go as he cleared not only the driveways for free but A half mile of road out to the main highway every time it snowed. I expect you will become very popular with your neighbors soon! I did when I brought home my Case 1845 C skid loader!! Good luck!!
Those are great machines. My grandpa was a logger and in the spring before he could get in the mountains he would do backhoe work. Anyways, I ran those backhoes lots back then. They are really good machines. And much much better than a case 580.
Yeah, its a great hoe, but I try and dig 98% without any extension. Mainly use it to drag stuff into range. The only other thing is the brakes are inside the rear end, and I hear its big $$$ to repair them. I try and use the tranny and bucket to stop or reverse. I am at 8000 hours and they still seem good.
I put many hours on a 655D. Good ole machine, finally sold it with 6,900 hours on it. Love that back bucket, the length on it was nice digging around pipe. Could really get cored out under things with that length. Could install it backwards to dig under pipe/foundations. Just time and technology made us upgrade. Run that throttle on high, controls are more responsive.
Just bought a old 5550 D Ford backhoe not running, bad injector pump. Everything seems tight on her, hopefully pump will get back next week and I will know what I got. I am no professional either but have run them off and on over the years.I would like to fix it and maybe sell it and buy a mini excavator which I think would be handler around the farm. Your 555 sounds great and after some hour you will become a lot better running it.
Have a 2wd just like it and it's a beast runs great . Same as it the day I bought it. Have had it 15 years now and thinking about selling it. But know I'll miss it. You made no mistake buying that 👍
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic I just posted mine on CL and I'm already worried someone's going to buy it 😥😣😣 I really don't use it anymore . But if it sells I'll miss having that muscle💪💪 around the house
If you're use to 3 or 4 lever controller valves, it's hard to get use to 2 sticks. Even hoes with 2 sticks often have the sticks operating differently than other 2 stick machines. It takes time...
I know this is an old video but I love the 555d used to run one all the time with my city so much slack in it it flopped all over but I got used to an could out work the new backhoe we had I could run circles round the new one I named it flip flop but I loved it an that leak you have is easy to fix get that done put a four in one bucket on it an you will have a fine machine
You got a good rig! I have a 710d john deere, 22,000 pound monster with a turbo 6 cyl. My Ford 655c 4cyl. non turbo can out dig, outwork and outlive it any day. The JD 710 is a death trap because the outriggers are about a foot shorter than the Ford, or as they should be. The boom is so big and heavy, that a fast swing to one side with a bucket of dirt stands you up on one outrigger. or a little more and then on its side. Most of the Case and JD guys think this is a "farm tractor'. I am glad they are so ignorant because the price of these Fords is so low on the auction market. The JD boom is so massive that you can't see what in hell you are digging. 555 c through e and 655 ditto are some of the best ever made. They moved production from Belgium to Italy sometime after that, and they are really a CN or Case unit now. Don't know how they compare... JD 310 is a great rig, but if you are on a JD 710, bring your life insurance policy. Got a case guy on my 655c and first thing he said was, wow, what outriggers. After a few minutes operating, he was shocked by its power.
woah, floppy bucket is floppy @ 9:03 got some worn bushing, pins, links and maybe bucket. of course the "fl-operator" isn't helping with the grand smoothness (looks like I was running it) :)) I see you found 4WD after the first hill climb, it looked much happier the second+ climbs
My 555c also leaks at the pump, it leaks out of the button plug looking thing on the side of it. My machine doesn’t have the extendable boom nor an enclosed cab.
I have a 555a and it does pretty good for a two-wheel-drive 3 cylinder diesel most problem's I've had is from blowing hoses because may were from 1984 which is my model so far I've only had the injector pump built and I do have power steering and some other leaks but it runs and does the job the only thing is if you blow any hose except power steering you better shut it down or you will pump all your hydraulic oil out and can damage the pump the other drawback like any equipment is if your on side of a hill because you have to keep eye on rear bucket swing location or you can turn it over very quickly I usually try to leave a leg down about a few inches off the ground but you have to remember this as your moving or can hang it on a tree or other things turning you sideways or flipping you
Idle it down a little and it will run smoother i own this same machine and running it wide open is way to jerky its hard to be smooth when your contantly ratteling around
It might be a good idea to make the door higher (If you can), or dig the floor deeper. You know you are going to hit that door with that backhoe. Go slow and you will be ok. Say hi to my girl friend when you see her.
Holy smokes it just fits into the shop!!!! Me too----- Everything I have except our car has needed work. The old girl is the back hoe right? What a great asset for the farm.

I agree with you, differently could use a lot more hours running this machine, but one gets better the more he uses the machine. It does run good however.
I started with Ford backhoes, the older Ford's where way better than the C's or D's. Saved up my money and bought a new Cat 416B ( absolutely junk ), then a Deere 310SE. John Deere is far superior!
I had an old Jd 310B. It was great hoe and did a lot of work for me but engine was getting tired so I sold it. WOuld have kept it forever if the engine would have still been strong.
I believe on the 555 they made the pin/bushing larger than the 550 that top part of the Yoke is under a lot of stress, esp if you use the bucket to break pavement or concrete I can vouch for that .. :)

yes and running like a champ!

keep that top pin lubed on the Hoe

put chains on it, snow wont stop you, well maybe if it's 8'+ deep..
