- In 2017, Big Ben bonged for the final time. The Elizabeth Tower, great clock and bells are undergoing a major restoration project, which will take four years to complete. But this doesn't mean total silence until 2021, as engineers have discovered a solution to ring the bell on special occasions, such as state funerals and New Year's Eve. Keeper of the clocks, Steve Jaggs reveals all the secrets behind the iconic London landmark to Londonist.

I'm not English but i must admit this is very depressing. It'll will be a while till londoners will here that beautiful chime again. I was also planning on going to london next year but it'll be sad seeimg big ben the way it is. I can only hope construction can get done quicker and also hope that they don't do any changes at all. This clock tower is beautiful and elegant just the way it was before.

Every time we get invaded by aliens, suffer a cataclysmic flood, or hit by asteroids, that clock tower gets destroyed. I hope they've taken that into account with the restoration this time.

Yes, clocktower movements are a lot more difficult and costly to repair.

MilkProductions the tower IS Elizabeth Tower it's only the 13.5 ton bell that's called Big Ben the smaller bells around it are the quarter bells

Its called "restoration" for a reason. As the clock ages problems occur, so the whole thing needs to be replaced so the clock will be fine for many years

Whilst Geoff is still involved with Londonist to some extent, especially in relation to transport, he has reduced his input to concentrate on other projects.
