/ asianhiphop Yoo Seung Jun with Jackie Chan promoting their new movie "Little Big Solider" on the talk show Asia Uncut. Episode aired on Feb 10th, 2010
I'm Korean and have always loved SteveYoo. No one can deny he's super talented. I think Korea was too rash to kick him out of the country. He's a good person,I know because I once met him in real life when he held a concert in Vancouver, such a nice guy!
It’s like people forgot that he promised to serve even though he changed his nationality to an American one lol He was talking about serving instilling Korean pride into his fans and the general public since he was THAT famous but failed to keep his promise so of course they were going to get mad. If I were him, I would have never promised anything.
thank u 4 uploading this clip, it was gd to see that his passion and talent in entertainment r still going on. and hope his great performance continues worldwide. keep going !!!
Exactly. I could become a Korean citizen on paper, but I will always be a whitey. Koreans would laugh my butt out of Korea if I waved around a Korean passport and called myself a Korean. they would call me "foreigner" no matter what. haha

What are you talking about? He was the one of the biggest male singer in korea. Thats the fact! Do your research before open your mouth..stop talking crap just because you dont like him.
ValiantSkyRider720 Pretty much every song he sang was number one in Korea music chart. Stop hating him so much for that army thing. At the end of the day he is not a criminal he just made a mistake. It's time to forgive him and move on.
boo jung "the most"? He was more like a dancer rather than a singer, and now we have tons of singers and dancers with much better performances here in Korea. No one thinks Korea lost something legendary regarding SY;; Maybe he used to be legendary for some thing other than music. He gained the fame for what he "preteneded" to be someone who deserves the full love of Koreans, as a good, perfect, trustworthy guy. That's there we did have all reason we liked him. Revealling that he is just a normal person is just enough to regret loving him. Nothing to forgive, or miss, we'd seen a wrong person at the first place. Did he change or realise something after the time away from Korea? No he doesn't know what he did, what to regret and what to show people. Seriously I hope he has someone wise next to him and explain what's the attitude Korean's need to see from him. It was last night he appeared on the JTBC news but I couldn't believe the words he said. He really did no try to understand Koreans but just wait for people to be forgetful, as long as 17 YEARS. I now get an idea of what has long been in his mind, as many replies reflects, he must have thought that everything that happened to him is not more than a stupid Korean nationalism. Just wait until this stupid generation get old and go die then, that's the only thing he can do it seems.

Jackie has a wide heart. I think the Korean government was caught up with improper propaganda. Don't worry Steve Yu, you will be welcomed in Korea. You have the support of all the Gyopos out there. It is us Gyopo that contributes to the development of Korea's interllectual and financial sectors.
ValiantSkyRider720 grow up already. There are many who have forgiven him cause there are many who know how to forgive and for the most part his true fans still love him. Would you not want to be forgiven by your loved ones when you made a mistake. stop talking like you never made any mistake. He still loves Korea even though he knows that Korea may never be able to forgive him. And for that, he deserves to be loved just like everyone of us does!
I find it interesting people say he draft dogged. He applied to be a U.S. citizen long before he was suppose to go to the military. He was finally naturalized shortly after he decided to go to the Korea military. Here's the thing people need to keep in mind...It takes YEARS to become a U.S. citizen. Timing wasn't on his side, but he didn't do anything wrong. Plus, now that he is a citizen here, he wouldn't required to serve in the South Korean military. If he is wrong, then EVERY SINGLE KOREAN AMERICAN is wrong. They should all go back and serve their home country's military...Right?? Wrong. It would be wrong to make them do so, just as it is wrong to make him do it. Also, as far as MC Mong, he was also found NOT GUILTY for draft dogging. But because Koreans have a way of hanging on to crap forever, they didn't let it go despite him being innocent. Eventually he ended up having anxiety issues thanks to how they treated the poor man in public. As much as I love the Korean culture, this is one thing I can do without.
Jai Art Yeah, as you said that He DIDN'T do anything wrong. He has never sentenced any guilty in Korea. His name has just been on the blacklist on immigration office, so he can't step on his homeland. His entering is denied forever. No jail in Korea. Korean government believed that his manipulation of the law could be affected to many Korean young people seriously, so to prevent the same case, Korean government changed his status as deportation. Here is the reason for that. He was Korean who has a permanent residency which is a foreigner in the states when he promised to serve his military duty and signed up for joining military, but he came back US to achieve American citizenship. As a result of this, about two high officers in military who assured his come back when he was leaving Korea got fired and could not get any pension. Disgrace. I am glad that you love Korean culture, but there is nothing to help him to bring back his right to stay in Korea. Here are another stars giving up residential right in the states to serve in military. www.worldyannews.com/news/quickViewArticleView.html?idxno=421
Jai Art Actually, you can get your US citizenship in a few weeks if you claim via your parents. If your parents became US citizens before you are 18 years old, you have a choice to claim your reject or claim US citizenship anytime. Speaking out of experience, I got my US passport in a few weeks. That's probably what he did.
Jai Art You need to know about Korea more before you speak out the problem. Korea is the only country where is separated in 2 sides, one is communistic and the other side is democratic, though no wars have been occurred for a long time it can be occurred anytime. Many South Korean youngers have taken their mandatory, used up their time for keeping their family and country, during the mandatory some youngers were dead cause of bad accidents. But Steven Yoo?? He's abandoned his mandatory for his sake. We don't care about that, that's his life. But His acting was just for his sake not for others. If he choose so he have to take charge what he did before. If he can reattain his civilization again, some people like him, who had lost their civilization cause of criminal activity, may through his case. No one wanna let that happen, that's the reason why we blame him. He gotta take his responsiblity about what he did..
Heej Kim He didn't have dual citizenship at the time. Korean citizenship + green card in the states, because he was born in Korea. That is why Korean people differentiate between Steven and Korean- American who were born in the states. Except that, other stuff that you told sound like true.
just so everyone knows about the whole "not wanting to go to mandatory military service thing" I will let everyone know all about it. Steve's family moved to the U.S. when he was 13. He had enough years to become a naturalized american citizen so he did it. This came into conflict with the fact that he was now exempt from military service. However, he DID NOT become an american citizen to AVOID the service. Nonetheless, there will always be speculation that he did do just that to avoid it...
Thanks Sam. B for such a nice response. Now back to the issue at hand......I think the artists personal life and their music should not be blended as one. No one is perfect, that being said, how long does it take for Koreans to forgive an artist. because of their personal choice? Koreans artists are so awesome, sad that that the choice of an artists can somewhat end their career. Regardless of the issue. concerning the artist, I myself, will judge the music, and not the artists personal life.Thank you,Chinale
@satinbox I see, apologies, I misunderstood terribly, and have caused you trouble. Yea, I heard about that, didn't really know the details, so thanks for the info. Hah, so... do you have something against the French? It's is an old phrase, but I think you should know that Englishman used that phrase to describe vulgar words(since they thought the French, themselves were vulgar)
@KimSteppe I used it as a figure of speech. I have nothing against any race or countries. But thanks for the info. I never knew the Englishmen looked down on the French like that. With that being said, society has really evolved and became more civilized! Thank goodness for that!
I'm Korean-American who loved Yoo seung Jun back in the old days, he was truly one talented artist. But what happened to him? Why did he stop his music career? and why the heck is he in the U.S? Can someone explain to me in details because I'm totally confused...
@satinbox ysj said, to Korea, that he want to appolozise, but only way of appolozise to Korean people, is to go to army. I wish he goes to army for 3years and become a korean singer again.
@KimSteppe I'm Korean myself and I love the Korean language. The reason why I said learn English at kangantafe (not you) was because he was saying (in Korean) "What a dumbass... What the hell is he saying?" to YSJ. First off, that was rude. Second off, Koreans have a bad image of YSJ because he tried to skip out on the army. They extradited him. He was a star. He was good. Just because he wouldn't serve his country, they made an example out of him. I think that's fucked up. Excuse my french. :(
Korean media outlets do realize that the sentences given to Yoo are a bit harsh. In the same breath, they voice the opposite side of that opinion, that an example must be made to anyone who considers avoiding their military service. By the way, this military service is not handed out via a draft. It is by law mandatory that all Korean-born males serve in the military for two years; these are the circumstances of still being at war with a neighboring country, a brethren country no less. Hundreds of South Koreans have died in the hands of North Korean spies and by North Korean missile attacks. I can see why the Korean government and the society as a whole finds the military service mandatory. Until peace is established, it is unfortunate but necessary. Thus I conclude with this: I am a US-born Korean-American. I find Steve Yoo's situation different from mine: the dude was born and raised in Korea until the age of 13 and lived in the States until he decided to return to his home country to earn a living as a Korean singer/artist/entertainer. To maximize his earning potential, he was considering settling down in both Korea and in the United States. Mind you, at this point, he was a Korean citizen and may have also applied for citizenship in the U.S. (It is a smart move actually.) But if you want to reap the benefits of a naturalized citizen, you should follow the laws of the land. (It is why I pay my NY state, NY city, and federal taxes, and it is why I am enrolled in selective service just in case my country, the U.S., needs me in emergency situations.) I will earn my living as a physician here in the United States and will forever do so. The U.S. is my country. However, Steve Yoo still considers Korea to be his home country and wants to find a way back "home". If I want to live and earn a living in Korea, and the Korean government asked me to serve, I would find it hard to do so but would still do it. It is the fair thing to do, especially if I want to reap the benefits of a Korean citizen. Yoo may not be going back to earn a living, but he has already created a niche in the Chinese entertainment industry right now. Who is to say that he wouldn't try to expand that earning potential in Korea, especially with the boom of Kpop globally? It's important to take a step back and try to understand why a Korean-born citizen who has given up two years of his life to serve in the military or why a mother or family member who has sent off their sons/brothers/cousins to the military has an issue with Steve Yoo. Consider both sides of the story. In the end, as a fellow Korean-American, I wish Steve Yoo all the best. He is living well in the U.S. and has done well in China. More power to him.
He and his family moved to US when he was 13 Considering his family being there It wasn't that wrong to get a citizenship there But its Korea They had to give him n a lesson so everyone who tried to evade military following will be scared
@BraveBamboo Green Card doesn't mean anything. It gives you the right as a person in U.S to do almost everything a citizen can do except voting. You are not a citizen. If you go to Korea with a green card, they still think of you as a Korean citizen. That is their law. So, you comply with their law. Are you saying that if every single Korean with a green card goes to Korea, they can dodge going to millitary? It would be pretty unfair if this person can avoid it just because he is so special.
@blo0magic Did u really read my comment? I SAID HE HAD THE FULL RIGHT TO BE US CITIZEN which means it was his choice to be us citizen or "remain" to be korean citizen. Well, if they choose to be us citizens then why should they go to korean millitary? I don't think choosing us citizen over korean is a crime. By the way, a green card doesn't give you privilege to do everything that a us citizen can (I am not talking about voting).
for yoo, he repeatedly and publicly said 'i will serve my country and with honor' all that good PR stuff, and just out of nowhere got his american citizenship which made his military service voided. then just all the ppl turned on him. he lost the trust of the ppl and govenment ppl just had enough of him and made an example out of him just to keep the angry public(mostly korean male who served) at ease. denied of visa that allows him to be pop star. but can enter the country under tourist visa.
If I went to Korea and lived there long enough to become a citizen I would do just that. I dont understand why they had to banish him from his home country. That, in my opinion, is very childish and arrogant of the people involved in banishing him. Koreans have a very strong sense of morality but that morality isnt the same with every other race. We can mostly agree that morality and traditions are different for everyone. Just like how our minds are never parallel to anyone else's in this world.
People here don't seem to realise that Steve You was the ambassador for Korean marines at the time, encouraging the youths to join and serve the cause for their home nation. No wonder Korean people were furious about the degree of trust that he broke.
Haters hate but they can never get tired of talking abt him This guy is too sick I dunno y y'all hatin who cares wat happened stick to ur business U heard?
I feel really sorry for this guy that he was so talented as a dancer and singer. I used to love him so much that I could sing all of his songs including the rap part even though I donno any Korean. But still I have to say he made a bad decision that killed his career. He ruined his public image. I still love him but...I don’t know. I was disappointed at that time.
@genghiskwon73 These aren't politicians we're talking about, these are people who sing and dance. Frankly they aren't responsible for the lives of millions or making laws and policies. And the war argument doesn't have a leg to stand on - without the draft I'm sure there's plenty of voluntary soldiers, and plenty of other countries are currently at war or have been in recent years - United States included - and they didn't force people into the military. Stop trying to excuse the inexcusable.
@gracesungsil sorry dude, you're wrong. I am one of Steve's fan. and I wish he could be able to come back to Korea and show his great performance to many that are missing him. But he wasn't victim of corrupted politician's decision. Just because some politicians are doing it, it doesn't make it Okay for him to do it. And he was on the spot and he made public announcement that he will go to military as a Korean citizen. He even did the physical exam and everything. It was a big mistake.
@BraveBamboo not wat he said, but what he did and didn't. He was on TV doing the physical and claiming that every healthy korean men must go to army. And the law in Korea states that these behavior that harm the national interests should be banned. As other actors like Jang Hyuk, Han Jae Suk, and Song seung hun tried to ditch the duty got caught and went to military. But Yoo Seung Joon was already US citizen, and if he was allowed back on TV, then the military becomes joke to people.no personal
@satinbox yup, too obvious? xD Well when you said "Learn English." I felt a bit infuriated, it was as if you were basically saying that the Korean language was inferior.
@tenaciousdlancet cause he didn't want to join korean military so korea got mad lol, he probably doing better in china he very lucky jackie took him in but yoo was cool when he came out with " Gawi" a 90s smash hit
@brazilianspiritzz It's so rare now that ppl actually believe everything the news says. Yes, I think I remember the news made a big deal out of what he said, and didn't even bother to ask why he chose US citizenship? Funny! It sounds exactly like what the news or some ppl wanted us to know.
@kiggawoo But in a way, other men in Korea would have boned out too if they wanted to. Just because he was a celebrity doesn't mean he can escape out of it.
Thank you Sam B. for your reply. There is one thing I would like to ask you. At what mark do Koreans. start to heal from a artist desire to lead their own life via their heart? Like I said before, we in the States. sign up for the service, if after we enlist and go awol, then there is trouble for them, some jail time? I really do not know, but even if there is some punishment, people begin to heal. Just want to know, when will the hate for those who decide not to serve go away. I respect your countrysculture. about serving. With that being said, do Koreans ever forgive and heal? Got to stop now and go to work. Thank you, Chinale
@satinbox yea, I just figured that since I've kinda wasted your time, I might as well tell you something that not everyone knows. You are welcome. Yes, thank goodness for civility! If only everyone had it :l
@genghiskwon73 Every last person on this planet has, at some point in their life, said one thing and then did the opposite; or promised to do something then went back on it... This whole situation is just really weird and messed up to me on so many levels; I don't see why South Korea FORCES young men to join the army there; and I don't see why refusing to do so is considered so shameful.
5:28 "he's like a princess" OMG Jackie LMFAO

He should've done his mandatory military service then, instead of fucking off to America
It’s because he didn’t want to be a sellout
He is a foreigner not korean
And you don't think Steve Yoo is not too rash to avoid serving military service by fleeing to US?
It’s like people forgot that he promised to serve even though he changed his nationality to an American one lol He was talking about serving instilling Korean pride into his fans and the general public since he was THAT famous but failed to keep his promise so of course they were going to get mad. If I were him, I would have never promised anything.
At least 50 people I know in Korea ,my friends , still love to see you in the concert..
I like Steve Yoo and Jackie Chan . I like Litlle Big Soldier movie . I love Steve Yoo . His story is amazing . I support him .

I didn't realize Yoo Seung Jun had such a heavy korean accent. Good luck to him, though. His career needs a boost again.
Whether you hate him or not you cant deny the fact he was a star. He was the king of kpop. Every korean female and male idolised him.
boo jung He's not Korean anymore since 14 years ago
융가리 he may be of American nationality, but nothing changes the fact that he's of full Korean descent

Jai Art Thank you!
Except that, other stuff that you told sound like true.
no.... he can't enter with tourist visa also. his entrance to Korea is completely blocked.

just so everyone knows about the whole "not wanting to go to mandatory military service thing" I will let everyone know all about it.
I miss steve
Kathrine Leek He can still do his artistic work outside of Korea. He is just banded to come back to Korea.
Good job 👏👍

@satinbox I see, apologies, I misunderstood terribly, and have caused you trouble. Yea, I heard about that, didn't really know the details, so thanks for the info. Hah, so... do you have something against the French? It's is an old phrase, but I think you should know that Englishman used that phrase to describe vulgar words(since they thought the French, themselves were vulgar)
This guy is always interesting to watch. Korea is missing out on a big talent.

Steve Yoo is wonderful.

More power to him.
why is jackie chan so nice.
steve yoo must've drugged him
He and his family moved to US when he was 13
Considering his family being there
It wasn't that wrong to get a citizenship there
But its Korea
They had to give him n a lesson so everyone who tried to evade military following will be scared
Sigh yeah he should’ve converted when he had the chance to. P

The victicm of korean politic
Smh. Korea made a huge mistake.
Nah, Yoo Shit Jun did. Korea had every goddamn fucking right to blacklist his ass. Good fucking riddance.

무슨말인지 해석도 달아줬음 ㅜㅜ
@KimSteppe Are you using Google translation? LOL And how does your bad temper apply to me???
@satinbox yup, too obvious? xD
Well when you said "Learn English." I felt a bit infuriated, it was as if you were basically saying that the Korean language was inferior.
@tenaciousdlancet cause he didn't want to join korean military so korea got mad lol, he probably doing better in china he very lucky jackie took him in but yoo was cool when he came out with " Gawi" a 90s smash hit
He's the reason why I am gay
