People are not supposed to be there. The land was stolen from Cyprus.

Hi George, Eric once again. I have just updated my version of Google Earth and searched Famagusta again and to my horror the NAAFI HQ has been demolished and there appears to be new construction on the site. I am very sad having seen this as at one time in the 50s and 60s this was the home of my total family. My late father was a senior NAAFI official and served the whole of Cyprus from here, whilst I worked for NAAFI transport. There remains an adjacent building in the road set at an angle, which was my Father's office but everything else seems to have gone. Oh well, it was more than 60 years ago but to me, it seems like yesterday. Thanks for your attention to my request. Regards Eric.

Hi again George. Sorry to say that you wear so near yet so far from the oldNAAFI HQ. It,s situated nearer the old harbour. As you exit the Old City via the dock gates, you approach a roundabout. You need to go straight ahead and take the old road that lead directly into Varsha. It used to be called Evagoras Avenue. The NAAFI HQ is situated in the first turning to the left. It is quite a striking building, very square, 4 storeys high and consists of 3 floors of offices, a large wharehouse and apartments on the top floor. I used to work for NAAFI and for a while lived in one of the apartments on the top of the building. There is a good view of the old docks from there. I do hope that you will be able to visit at some time, as I have very fond memories of the years that I spent in Varsha. We later moved into a lovely bungalow in Evagoras Avenue situated the other end of the town, which you almost stumbled on during your last visit. I have photographs of the Gymnasium that you visited this time but that was before the decorative gardens were built. I still retain my Cyprus ID card which was issued in 1957. Thanks once again for trying for me, I really appreciate it. Regards Eric.

But the Turks were treated as second class citizens, they only had menial jobs, had no say in the running of the country and lived in more or less ghettos, like "Turkey Town" in Famagusta

I don't know why anyone would want to go there now; streets and streets of derelict buildings; I was stationed at Famagusta when I was in the RAF with my family; we lived in a block of flats on John F Kennedy Avenue; they were not built near the beach or by the beach but ON the beach, the whole area was a thriving , bustling holiday resort, 7 miles of golden sands; it was the most popular resort for holidaymakers. We were there from 1968-71 and when we saw the devastation of the invasion, my late wife and decided that we would never go back to Cyprus, we had such a wonderful time there and it would break our hearts to see Famagusta as it is today, a shell and a shadow of its former self

In 1974 there were loads of holiday makers, mainly Swedish area and German, there were a few British holiday makers. I remember the Germans on the beach sunbathing whilst the Turkish planes were attacking. The lads had to get them off the beach to safety, they didn’t even realise what was happening even though we were evacuating the families out of the area

If you are coming east then Larnaca is best. Then you could travel through the crossing points. Or fly to Ercan via Turkey. Best to look on bookings.com for hotels.
