I'm so impressed! You just cover every single song I look up from the Mick Karn catalogue. So nice to find a community of Mick Karn fans. He really was phenomenal and your tuition is phenomenal too. Just wish I could have seen him play live. Much of the playing is pretty advanced and I'm a beginner but I enjoy the challenge and will push forward, slowly but surely.
Many thanks for sharing this brilliant baseline from Japan european son. You are A GOD amongst men. I was going to thank you in Irish but there's one way saying it but writing it down is beyond me many thanks
I wouldn’t be a big Irish speaker, but it’s “go raibh maith agat”, pronounced not much like it looks!! 😄 Thank you so much for the kind words Where are you from yourself?
Great video ! I love this song to . I never realised he he slid from the 7th fret down to the 5th then 6th ! I normally play the single note at the 6th fret and then 6th and 5th on the D string before jumping back into main riff which sounds right and does work and the slide to the 10th in chorus also caught me out so well done for spotting that ! Lots of people think this is Duran Duran when they hear this😱 I can hear the likeness but l'm sure you'll agree Duran Duran were never that good 👍
@@mindhead2005 I agree but you can definetley hear the Japan influence on the first 2 singles " Planet Earth & Girls On Film " Thankfully they realised they'ed never be the next Japan and went on to do they're own thing. John Taylor who i admire as a bass player, has always cited Steve & Mick as one of his favourite Rythm sections.
@@stephenbennett1643 Duran are a great band and have definitely stood the test of time. Taylor is another superb and unique bassist. He uses the pick to tremendous effect He also comes across as a down to earth and likeable dude
@@mindhead2005 Whilst i was never a fan of Duran back in the day ! They to me came across as a pretty boy band who appealed to teenage girls ? Saying that i have to say they did they're own thing very well and have stood the test of time . I thought John Taylor normally played with his fingers ? Sure he does alternate & use a pick tho. Both Rio, Girls On film are excellent lines well worth learning . Iv'e watched his Rio bass lesson on utube ! Very down to earth guy. 👍
@@stephenbennett1643 yeah, remember the epithet “Durannie”? :) In retrospect they had some really good stuff, though. The night mixes album is incredible stuff altogether JT alternates between fingers and pick. I just really like his pick work. He has a great feel for it, which is what I was saying above
I'm loving your Mick Karen breakdowns. He doesn't get the respect he deserves. I got my first fretless a couple of years ago and Mick was the inspiration for getting it, absolutely loving it. Thank you for your insight, absolutely fantastic. Are you using some chorus on this? All the best
Hey J Thanks for the kind words and encouragement Mick was incredibly underrated but I think a whole new generation of players are appreciating his genius, so there’s hope yet! I think I did use a little chorus on this one, as per the record
Hey there,,,great lesson...I was listening to quiet life on RUclips and it somehow lead me here..I play guitar but I do own a bass and will learn to play this on it..Its not a fretless but I do own an octave pedal and may be able to recreate the sound somewhat...Maybe you could do quiet life on bass sometime...Cheers mate...Be well...
Hey Aidan Thanks for tuning in. Sure thing, Quiet Life is one I plan on doing soon Some real surprises in it, too! An octave pedal won't really help get the fretless sound, but I would suggest just playing your fretted bass normally and making sure you get your finger as close to the metal fret as possible This will mean that when you eventually get a fretless, your muscle memory will have your hands in the right place Til them just turn the tone knob down a little and maybe use some vibrato (side to.side, not from your wrist, like a guitarist, if you follow) There are some great cheap fretlesses available, even online. So when you DO decide to go fretless, it need not cost the earth :) Keep your eyes peeled for Quiet Life and thank you for the fantastic request!! Michael
please hide that big mike ....its a little visual annoying...sorry .....but fabulous lessons and insight to mr k^s deceptively complicated playing or very simple i mean actually keep u the good work !

Thank you so much.
We all were beginners once, so push on surely!
Next to Karn we are all STILL beginners!
:)
One of my favourite Karn riffs. Just pulses along 👍
Getting back to the start is tricky with little hands like mine
:)
Wonderful lesson once again.
Thank you, Stephen

Duran were far more mainstream than this! And never as original
Thanks a mill!
