  • Canadian rock veterans Sloan released a new addition to their impressive and prolific discography this week with their twelfth studio album, 12. Since sparking the Canadian East Coast alternative scene of the early 90s, the band has spent the last quarter century amassing an incredible body of work, managing to stay together, to stay relevant, and making a case for Sloan to be considered one of Canada's all-time greatest rock bands.
One of Canada's longest-running and most prized bands, Sloan continues their democratic songwriting tradition on this record with three songs penned by each of the four core members of the band: Patrick Pentland with the soaring rock anthems, Chris Murphy with the playful, participatory sing-alongs, Jay Ferguson with the jaunty prog-pop gems, and Andrew Scott with the whimsical innerspace explorations. But rather than isolating themselves to work on their own tunes as they did on their last album, Commonwealth, this time they all collaborated on each other's work.
Sloan paid us a visit in the Stiegl Hidden Studio to perform four songs from 12, with each member taking a turn on lead.

I love how these guys understand how to mix themselves in a live environment. Specifically, both Andrew and Chris' playing and selection of their cymbals. They have a light touch on em, and have chosen smaller, deader cymbals so they don't drown everything else out in that room.

These guys are such geeks... and I say that with love. They know how to create power pop songs.... that stand up and last. They take their craft so seriously. Every album has soul and shows that they are on top of it. I saw them four times. I just love them.

So good, I got a wee bit teary-eyed during every song. And I got to thinking there's almost too much talent for just one band...to spread out the goodness how would they divide the band into two? I think Jay and Andrew together for a British thing and Chris and Patrick for a "alt" indy vibe. Then they get back together for a reunion tour selling out areans world wide.

Umm, No. For the majority of their songs they've used a lot of short delays/reverb incorporated into the mix, especially on vox. I'd say its part of their sound. In fact, I paused one of the songs several times where everything cuts out but the vox just I could hear that "signature" sloan vox sound.
