I liked Gale because he was a realistic character. He is loyal to his values and overall a decent person, but is brutal to those that he perceives as threats. I think he was shafted for doing exactly what was necessary to win the war. Peeta answered injustice with compassion, whereas Gale answered it with justice.

Replacing a bad injust system for another isn't great (Coin's government at first and her choices were totalitarians like snow's ones, fascism with another look but the same basis of social classes and uniting people against a group (the rebels/the ex capitol citizen)...same cult of war and hate culture and corruption and quest of power above everything else
Gale is a character interesting because a lot of people are/were/will follow and serve an injust regime that use their hate against the previous one
And that's quite sad because they're just used by the ones that want/ won the power...
Peeta since the brainwash HAD to deal with his own hate and must control this feeling, hate wasn't something good in peeta's life, but in gale's life hate was a fuel without a lot of direct bad consequences...
Context, the most important thing I think to understand the characters through their point of view and their experiences (peeta's brainwash was a key for him becoming a self controlled person with still his empathy, because he had to forgive himself and change and after that it's easier to learn to wait before killing people without a chance for them to change)

Katniss ended up with Peeta because she realized she’d been wrong about gale. When she met him he was kind, and caring, But over time it she realized it was only to her and his family. He was cold to other people and would kill anyone to survive- which was the exact thing katniss couldn’t bear anymore. Katniss is reckless, just like gale. They were the exact replica of the term “You can’t fight fire with fire.”
Gale was always trying to make Katniss lose her rebellious side.
While peeta was a dandelion in the beginning of spring. He maintained her fiery-soul and keeps it under control. Gale never realized how many people’s deaths she had on her consciousness. When gale talked about an uprising she knew he would kill to get what he wanted, and she was afraid to tell him that for every death you caused, it left a mark on your soul. She knew that when he made a bomb that would explode twice, killing medics and people who tried to save lives.
In the end he couldn’t handle her insanity, he just brought more harm to her than help. He didn’t know how to help her deal with the trauma she had been through. Peeta did, he understood how it felt to lose family, he knew what she had done. He watched first hand as she killed others and watched her friends die one after another. He knew she had lost almost all the only people who understood what she had been through (Rue, finnick, wiress, etc. and almost Peeta and Johanna)
He could tell her he knew, when gale couldn’t. He could comfort her, when gale couldn’t or didn’t know how to. He followed and watched over her, when gale didn’t. He never gave up on her, Gale did. I think Collins ended this series beautifully. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
Not to mention gale became a big jerk in catching fire and mockingjay.

The one thing I love about the books is the realistic characters, and their reactions to other character's actions being accurate. As much as I wanted Katniss to end up with Gale, realistically there's no way a person could forgive someone for indirectly killing their sibling without even apologizing. I wouldn't be surprised if Katniss still didn't continue the friendship even if he did. Katniss ended up compassionate despite everything the Capital did, and still had the empathy to save people. Even the Capital's people. Gale didn't have that same compassion, because everything the capital did made him hate everything but Katniss. Which I think is very representative and true with how people respond to trauma. Not everyone is going to respond to trauma the same. Some people end up trying to help the world, while others don't mind it burning down.

Agreed! Not on the gale but anyway! I agree with a lot of what you said, but I feel like people overlook the hanging tree song. Yes, its a song about his lover running to death with him. But the line "If we met at midnight in the hanging tree" is interesting. This is because in cf, we see Katniss and Peeta within the plot to get rid of the careers with the lightening tree, notice how they say "See you at midnight". And the hanging tree is about two lovers meeting at midnight at a tree (more meeting in death but thats how the lyrics appear).

I feel that after Prim's death, he realized he had reached the point of no return. His actions had very real and severe consequences, along with mental toll of war. He had to do what he had to do to help the rebellion win the war, and doing anything otherwise could've resulted in a much more catastrophe ending to the war for him and the ones he cared about. His bravery and proactiveness as a leader helped to evacuate district 12 survivors to district 13, helped to rescue Peeta and the other victors from the capitol and overall played a key part in the rebellion's victory.
This made him realize there was no way he could let compassion and morality get in the way of what he had to do for the greater cause, and there was nothing he could've done about Prim's death because ultimately Coin's leadership was a key reason the rebellion won, and her evil side of wanting to destroy katniss and killing her sister was simply something they could've nothing about if the rebellion was to win. Realizing there was nothing he could do to ever make it up to Katniss, he hardened up and realized it was the end of their relationship and there were no points in tears over what-could-have-been but isn't reality.

There was this interesting scene in the movies where right before the bombs fall into Capitol, Gale gets captured by the peace keepers and screams “Katniss, shoot me!!” He probably shouted this because he might’ve thought he would get tortured by Capitol and Peeta did, but what struck me was that it was a metaphor for Katniss saying goodbye to Gale, shooting him out of his life. It was as if he knew what’d he done and couldn’t bear to live with it for the rest of his life.

My hot take is Gale has always been one of my favorites. I loved his relationship with Katniss because they paired so well together as friends. People also overlook the fact that when they disagree, both of them still try to listen to the other! Gale knew that she was probably going to end up with Peeta, but he still never stopped loving her and took care of her family. He is responsible for saving over 900 people during the district 12 bombing. I also found his hatred for the capital extremely justified. I don’t blame him for Prims death since he didn’t make the plan and only planned the weapons and Coin sent her there knowing how the weapons worked. She directly caused her death, not Gale. Gale was in the middle of war only trying to get back at the people who wronged him and the people he loved! I understand why people may not like him, but he’s always been my favorite:)

But Katniss didn't want him to let that eat him up, and make choices that later on he may not be able to live with, like her and Peeta had to. Yes, Cato and the other Careers were cruel, but they were still innocent children. Even after what they did, Katniss grieved for them and that she'd had to kill Cato.

Gale did have to make some very hard decisions in the war, but he was trying to make sure they’d stop the oppressive regime. I don’t blame Katniss for her reaction about the Nut at all! But they had to take over that place bc it supplied the Capital with weapons and they blew up an innocent hospital. I’m also pretty sure the people were soldiers, and Gale even included an escape for them too. Now for the Capital Plaza, I believe Gale would never have ordered/supported that. He was blaming the capitol for the destruction of 12, Peeta was channeled to blame Katniss for everything and he wanted to kill her, now when you say that Peeta is full of hope, you do realize that he wasn't an active participant of the rebellion, like if he hadn't been taken to the Capitol, and he would've seen what they did to 12, would he voted that much different about the Nut? Or if he had the ability to develop weapons, he would make toys?

If that's not true love I don't know what is. He saved Prim and brought her to Katniss before the bombs got dropped on District 13 AND saved her family before they bombed district 12. He clearly cared for Prim and NEVER intended those bombs to be used on the rebels! Also, people seem to be forgetting that they were in a WAR. With a government that literally made kids killing each other entertainment! It's natural that after years of hunger and suffering some people grew very resentful and rightfully so! His ends justify the means was the right mentality to win the war. If you think she's more suited with Peeta that's fine, that's an opinion, but don't hate on Gale for it.

I think many people misunderstand Gale and his purpose in the series. He wasn’t perfect and I agree that Peeta was overall a better person (and the one that Katniss was in love with) but Gale was a good one too. I read the books first and until I reached the internet I seriously didn’t know I was supposed to hate him! In the movies he’s shown as a jealous, controlling friend who basically follows Katniss everywhere she goes. In the books Katniss actually needs Gale (e.g in 8 in the hospital) and often finds her way back to him. He was a huge support for her when no one else was there - when they were kids and in 13 when Peeta was held prisoner, Finnick was nearly sick because of Annie and Katniss couldn’t even look at Haymitch. Gale made her laugh and cared for her and she cared about him, though not in a romantic way. But next to Prim (and later Peeta) Gale was one if the most important people in her life. Gale always protected Katniss, her family and innocent people. I know he might have created the terrible bomb and it’s wrong. But while thinking about it I think we should remember that Gale lost his father because of the Capitol and he and his family suffered from hunger because of the Captiol. This is something that makes you do crazy things. I think we should cut him some slack. He wasn’t a bad person and I don’t think he deserved to die like many are saying.
I’m totally team Peeta and Katniss btw!

Coin is responsible for Prim's death.
Gale designed a bomb during a war, to use it against his enemies if necessary. That's what people do during wars.
Prim was too young to be there anyway, Coin was the one to allow it. Coin was the one who gave the order of the bomb to be dropped in an area where her own soldiers and doctors were fighting.

People forget that Gale, like everyone else in this series, is a victim of the capitol. When you’re in times of war not everyone can respond correctly. Gale responds appropriately with the tools he has. He has had to fight to survive along with Katniss. Unlike Peeta he knows violence is not only necessary, but inevitable. People write him off because they blame him for Prim’s death. But Gale didn’t kill Prim, the government did. The government and society Panem is, is the ultimate villain. That which corrupts people & brings people to their absolute worst. Gale is totally misunderstood by the fandom overlooking this fact.

Peeta in contrast is so morally righteous and framed as a perfect person. In the end he becomes a shell of himself. They all do. That’s the reality of war and rebellion it changes you, even the brightest of us. Gale was a victim too and had to see the person he loves be in a fake dating relationship to be kept alive. Knowing Gale could provide to her, felt inferior when he has always been there for Katniss. That must’ve hurt knowing Katniss was with a guy he seemingly is inferior by terms of providing in that sense. What Peeta gives Katniss is what a changed Gale can’t. That companionship with similar bond and understanding. As they spent so much apart they can’t relate to each other anymore. Sad. Gale deserved more despite his mistakes.

I always thought the author and/or Katniss made the wrong choice between Peeta and Gale (like Bella in the Twilight books/movies), but this video made me understand why she chose Peeta. He was sensitive, and reluctant to kill innocent people (including children) to win the war. If I had to choose a partner in a war, I would choose Gale to survive. However, I would choose Peeta as a husband to share the rest of my life. Katniss made the right decision because Gale was responsible directly or indirectly for Prim's death.

i’ve only made it six minutes in but i can’t help but be reminded of the chemistry between gale and katniss; it reminds me why of ron and hemione and that (paraphrasing) ‘just because an author says something doesn’t make it true/canon’

You know that if he'd gotten reaped, Cinna would have full stop made him the Mockingjay.
And maybe Plutarch would've taken notice instantly.

He actually has a lot more fire for the rebellion, like you know when Katniss would struggle with it, Gale would be like f/*k it, why not XD

Most people dislike gale because he was real. He understood a war cannot be fought with compassion. He took the harsh steps cuz others wud not and thats the truth. He understood the effect of war and wanted to save many. His bomb led to prims death was one sacrifice was the betterment of thousands others. People like gale actually help win a war. Peeta is ideal, kind but in reality war makes us all like Gale.

How did killing Prim and lots of other kids make anyone's life better. He made Katniss's life a living hell
