  • Part music reaction of Voulez-Vous and part documentary of the tumultuous production of ABBA's "disco album". It was my first time reacting to Abba’s sixth album. Great album tracks like "Lovers Live A Little Longer” and "If it wasn't for the Nights" lyrically showed where Bjorn Ulveaus was at with his divorce to Agnetha Faltskog. The history of Voulez-Vous is the history of disco and it's relevancy is still going like the Angel Eyes tiktok trend which is also also explored!

Woah, fabulous fabulous work here. You followed that timeline and put it all into perspective 🥰 Having grown up through those years, the newspaper headlines and the gossip surrounding ABBA, all their music has become infused with the "story". To step back and just look at four individuals who had real lives to lead while raising children is quite a feat. Sure, they have their phobias and quirks like anyone, but what they created... I can only call Magic ✨

I've always loved the verses of Chiquitita because you can hear their voices together but also separately. Agnetha's high clear voice. Frida's low warm voice. Working together and around each other but still distinctive. It's very beautiful.
As Frida said, she and Agnetha lived their lives together for a while. It elevated them to something more like family. The idea that they had some weird, secret hatred for each other has always been bizarre to me. Whenever they talk about each other, you can hear the affection there. They both knew how hard it was to be an "ABBA girl" in the way that no one else could.

    • @popcornphilosopher
      @popcornphilosopher  5 месяцев назад +2

Nice observation, I really agree about Chiquitita. I think I might’ve been inclined to believe that they didn’t care for each other. Just because there’s a lot talking about it …but I don’t believe it anymore. I bet they’re like sisters.

    • @TheFridaFan

@@popcornphilosopher Supposedly the whole idea of them being enemies was put forth by a guy who wrote a book sometime in the early 90s...way after ABBA had ended. He wasn't a sanctioned ABBA biographer or anything, but suddenly it was all over the media and people were very willing to believe it. I'm not sure why. There are a lot of people who like to see women pitted against each other. Unfortunately a lot of fans still play in to it today.

A Demo sample that sneaked had the working title 'In the arms of Rosalita".That was before its final shape (featuring Frida on the lead btw).Song is solid and also became a huuuge tik tok trend around mid '21 i think, when youngsters disciovered this and jammed with its piano outro featuring Benny's uplifting tricks that also boosted its utube views very quickly.

nice to write to you, my dear young friend
I apologize for my delay in responding, I saw and enjoyed your video at the time you published it, but I was busy enough to be able to write to you calmly and precisely as you deserve, for your dedication, research and compilation of excellence, as well as your other previous works
It's not difficult for me to talk about the album "Voulez Vous", but it is difficult for me to be understood when I say that it is one of the three ABBA albums that I like the least.
(well, some have to be among the three weakest)
But everything has its context, ABBA's staff and mine too.
I am 66 years old, at that time I was 21/22, I was just discovering the music of ABBA, I had the albums Greatest Hits, Arrival and The Album, in the latter there was a song "The name of the game" in which I constantly raised the pick of the record player over and over again to stop and analyze the voices of Agnetha and Frida (who I still didn't know, because it took a long time for records from Europe to arrive in my country, Argentina in South America, while those from Europe took a little less time to arrive. They came from North America, probably that's why ABBA in South America had almost no impact like the Bee Gees, the Beatles as solo artists and even Queen and the Rolling Stones)
Until there was an event that changed everything here:
    the Concert for UNICEF
Its international television, even delayed, allowed all the artists to be seen.
and there I saw ABBA for the first time, at their world premiere of "Chiquitita"
and in that performance my platonic love with Agnetha Fältskog began
That was the moment of ABBA's impact, in Argentina but also throughout Latin America.
The single Chiquitita sold a lot in Buenos Aires and all of Argentina,
and it was the moment that the commercial managers of the local RCA subsidiary traveled to Sweden with the lyrics of Chiquitita adapted to Spanish (except the last verse) and managed to convince ABBA to record it in Spanish
Here came ABBA's performances in Spain for the 300 millionth show
And ABBA was seen performing Chiquitita in Spanish
and Chiquitita was a smashing success throughout Latin America.
and that boosted the album Voulez Vous, and established ABBA as popular in Latin America.
now I come back to me
At that time of my youth I was influenced by the disco music of the Bee Gees and the movie Saturday Night Fever.
and in that context I really liked Voulez Vous
Time passed for me, and with another personal maturation, that disco music no longer attracts me.
And just as I almost don't like Bee Gees disco songs anymore.
(I prefer them in their old ballad era, until their fantastic transitional album Mr Natural 1974 and the following Main Course 1975)
This is how the album "Voulez Vous" also fell on me, in relation to the other ABBA albums, because today I see it more uneven with each other
It's funny, because it's the ABBA album that I experienced the most in real time (until "Voyage"). But in retrospect I discovered for example that the self-titled album "ABBA" is almost perfect (except for "Man in the middle")
I come back and finish on "Voulez Vous"
I still think Chiquitita is their standout track, a masterpiece, one of the 'Seven Wonders of ABBA'
The opening with "As good as new" is fantastic (Agnetha's 'ma-ma-ma-...' are powerfully beautiful) and followed by "Voulez Vous" is a great initial combo
I also really like "If it wasn't for the nights"
    (yes, there disco track albums)
one step lower they would come
"Does your mother know" and "The king has lost his crown"
    going down another step
"I have a dream" (lifted by the children's choir) and "Angeleyes"
and I don't like the end of the album, it seems to me that Frida and Agnetha scream more than they sing in
"Lovers (live a little longer)" and "Kisses of fire" (despite Agnetha's beautiful introduction), the latter a very favorite of ABBA fans
and I do not include the bonus tracks in the analysi
I do not forget the context in which these songs were written, the marriage of Benny and Frida and the separation of Agnetha and Björn
of the Concert for UNICEF and the special for UNICEF
    ABBA in Switzerland
and ABBA's subsequent tour of North America and Europe
For me "Voulez Vous" is a good album 7pts
but on my scale of ABBA albums it came seventh:
    The Album
    Arrival
    ABBA
    Super Trouper
    Voyage
    The Visitors
    Voulez Vous
    Ring Ring
    Waterloo
Maybe I know that my taste is different from most fans and from ABBA themselves hahaha
since the current Voyage Concerts at the ABBA Arena in London focus on ABBA's physical appearance on the last tour in 1979 promoting precisely the album Voulez Vous
Well, I hope I haven't bored you too much with my long comment.
but despite my criticism, this is ABBA's album, and especially its signature song "Chiquitita", that made ABBA recognized and massive in my Argentina
I leave you a huge hug
    and see you next time
PS: in only two weeks, next April 6
will be the 50th Anniversary to
históric ABBA victory at Eurovisión in Brighton UK
    with their icónic song Waterloo
and You will see a lot of homenages to ABBA
    specialy in all Europe
Brighton UK, the ABBA Arena in London UK,
the Swedish TV in Stockholm Sweden
the ABBA WORLD in Malmö Sweden
    at Waterloo Belgium
and much more is comming soon
because today ABBA still are Greatest and Legends

Sorry I missed this first! Interesting the context on how ABBA finally conquered South America! That was one of the more fascinating parts of my research into this album We will have to disagree on disco though lol. I love to dance though. so good dance music will always have a place in my heart and ABBA makes some of the best dance music as do the Bee Gees as well. I like it so much better than a lot of dance music today. Oh, really in the last 10 years I tend to like my dance music, a little kooky haha. Or at least.Different. And ABBA really put their spin on disco in such an interesting way I feel like the dance music today is by design meant to flow into each other and a lot of it is highly boring to me. also, we have to disagree on the latter half of the album. That probably is my favorite part. Kisses the fire, especially. But that’s what so special about music is that it can be interpreted and connect with people in so many different ways. Thank you for letting me know about Waterloo anniversary by the way! I hope all is well well!

Lovely video. Part of the problem in the 70s with who spoke for Abba is that the worldwide music press was invariably UK and US and at the time the two men spoke more fluent English. But most press coverage of Abba (again US/UK centric) was very patronizing as the writers tended to begrudge them their success and offered a view to their readers that they succeeded in spite of themselves or that it was all part of some clever commercial master plan. There were exceptions of course (notably Lester Bangs in Creem Magazine) but most reporters hewed to the line put forward by Robert Christgau ("We have met the enemy and they are them"), in older age he has expressed regret for that sentiment, or Mick Farren's mysoginistic and xenophobic take on them in the NME. (Farren was generally a good critic but with Abba he just lost the plot and let his basest instincts intrude into his criticism; you can still find the article online.) The biggest objection to Abba then was that they were neither English nor American. The strangest part was that the press, at the time, was obsessed with punk music while many of the punk musicians were obsessed with Abba. Other musicians as well, Ritchie Blackmore very notably. Abba's fans were perceived as being mostly female and that was a belief that has taken years to be put aside. Abba's global critical recognition came in the 90s after the two Australian movies and with the release of Abba Gold.

Some of the songs are for sure catchy (Voulez Vouz and I Have a Dream for instance), but overall it just felt kind of forced to me, like this isn't what Benny & Bjorn would do as their natural songwriting. Have you looked at post-ABBA music by Benny Bjorn. Some of their best music is in this period.

I know, when I heard about it It made so much sense because a good majority of people in America have a really poor opinion about dance music, and I kinda grew up with that, even though I really love dance music. it’s really hard to make good dance music and ABBA makes incredible dance music, of course in addition to lots of other great music.

NOW, what was to come in the not too distant future was gawd awful rap, there's sooo much hate for it and yet it just keeps going and going, I guess cause it's really simplistic music to make, don't need much talent to chant that crap out!
